This has been the most helpful video I have watched so far to help me get started on my first block quilt ever! It was very basic and easy. And to the point everyone else just goes on and on and goes way to fast and doesn’t show step by step like I had no idea how to get past the sewing the two strips together how do you get the other strips I didn’t know you see two rows at a time then flip them in and see them together like that. No one shows you that. SO THANK YOU! For being short sweet and to the point! For not only a beginner sewer but quilter as well!!!!!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment Falen. I am so happy to hear you found the tutorial helpful. This is such a nice easy quilt to start out with. Have fun with your projects. We have lots of other simple quilts and sewing projects for beginners, and we have the written instructions on the website www.alandacraft.com/2018/03/02/quick-quilt-1-layer-cake-baby-quilt-tutorial/
I absolutely love your tutorials and I made my first quilt following your instructions - it turned out pretty good, thanks to your patient step-by-step guidance. I just wanted to let you know that!
What a lovely lady .Thank you. With your instructions I am able to understand completely .Again thank you with all my heart. God bless sweet ladies like you.
You are the best quilting instructor and like everyone else says Your tutorials are easy to understand. I'm very new to quilting and sometimes some of the people go on so much that I lose interest. No fault of theirs but somehow you have managed to keep my attention more so than others. Thank you!@@alandacraft
One of the best tutorials I've seen. Firstly, excellent video tutorial clearly explained . The instructions are given in a great, simple manner. Wanda? has a lovely, soothing voice. I loved this and other videos. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your tutorial on making this easy baby quilt using a layer cake, particularly liked the turn through method of stitching on the backing.
We are happy to be back as well Debra. We have been working on combining the training academy and store, and it's been a big job. So the videos had to take a back seat for a little bit. :)
Love your videos, just recently found you, I'm new to quilting, but I have done many crafts for many years. Your videos are very well done. Others should watch and learn from you of how to make a good informative video. I look forward to watching all of you videos and seeing what you bring in the future. One request could you do a quilting video using jelly rolls. That is the first quilt material I have bought and I wish I hadn't. Thank you love your channel.
Thanks for your lovely comments Pam. They are truly appreciated. And by the way, we already have a few jelly roll quilt tutorials. You are going to be happy your purchased the jelly roll after all once you make one of these. My preference is the Jelly Roll Race Quilt Tutorial - it's the first on the list on the page I've provided the link to below. If you click through to any of those projects on that page, you will see a video tutorial - www.alandacraft.com/2018/06/23/fabric-jelly-roll-projects/
Alanda, how did you make your display board? Is that like particle board with felt on it? That is such a great idea! I'm pretty new to quilting and I really love your videos. You're a very good teacher!
Thank you for your lovely comment. Here is a link to the website where you can see how we made the display board. www.alandacraft.com/2015/12/05/how-to-make-a-quilt-design-board-tutorial/
I love the ease of these quilts but have noticed that when I try and quilt them afterwards it seems to pull the fabric and I wind up with a mess at the end.
I just use straight line stitching on these, it's quick and easy to do. I also use a walking foot to help keep the layers together as I am sewing. Make sure the layers are completely smooth and flat. I use 505 temporary adhesive spray and pinning to help with that. Other than that I just take my time and adjust the layers as I sew. I hope that helps Linda.
We tend to use Warm and Natural and the company website states that the warm and natural batting has a 3% shrinkage in cold water, in the first wash. And a 5% shrinkage in warm water. They also recommend that you wash your finished quilt in cold water. We tend to air dry our quilts, but if you do want to use a dryer, use a low heat and only partially dry it. Lay it flat to finish of the drying process. Having said all that, my husband was in a nursing home and the quilt I made him went through their industrial washers and dryers and it still looks like new. I did use good quality fabric when making it though.
Great learning video- Thanks- question tho, do you have to worry, when the batting says 8 inches? When using those 10 inch layers? Thanks I want to make a larger quilt using all 42 layer cakes
I'm sorry Laura but I can't see where you are seeing that the batting is cut to 8". The batting for this quilt is left in one large piece and not cut into squares. This is not a quilt as you go quilt it's a turn through method of making a quilt. So the squares are all joined and the batting and the backing are cut in one piece to match the finished top,
Hi Donna, Here is a link to our post where you will see the mat is first item on the list and there is a link to where you can get one. www.alandacraft.com/top-10-quilting-tools-for-beginners/. It's a great size. We have two, one for our regular cutting and one that we try to keep in pristine condition for on camera work.
Hi Martha, I started in the middle of the quilt (7:45 in the video) and I smooth the layers of fabric as I go, We had sprayed the quilt which helps to keep it in place and reduces bunching and you can also pin the quilt if you are concerned about the layers shifting. Hope this helps.
Yes Lori this can work for any size. Just decide what size you want and add extra squares. You will need to take care to smooth the layers and use an adhesive spray and loads of pins to hold the layers in place or you may end up with bubbling. If you are a beginner I would make a small one first and then make the larger size.
A twin bed quilt measurement is approx 39" x 80". So if you use 4 blocks across (38 1/2" finished) and 8 blocks down (76") or 9 blocks down (85 1/2") finished. Just check those measurements before you start but I'm pretty sure that should work. Here is a link to the written instructions on the original quilt. www.alandacraft.com/2018/03/02/quick-quilt-1-layer-cake-baby-quilt-tutorial/

Can you recommend a batting with the least amount of shrinkage and should quilts ever be put in the dryer
Can you do this method with ant size quilt
Yes you can Cara. Just take extra care when smoothing it out. For a large quilt I would spray baste and pin to keep the layers together.
Where did you get that lovely board to stick the layer cakes on?
We made it. Here is a link to the tutorial www.alandacraft.com/2015/12/05/how-to-make-a-quilt-design-board-tutorial/
Great Video! But I keep looking at your Mat. That is huge! Where did you purchase it?
Hi Donna, Here is a link to our post where you will see the mat is first item on the list and there is a link to where you can get one. www.alandacraft.com/top-10-quilting-tools-for-beginners/. It's a great size. We have two, one for our regular cutting and one that we try to keep in pristine condition for on camera work.
How many DIFFERENT fabrics do you need?
This was a layer cake so each square is different.
Since you didn’t start from the center to quilt, how did it keep from bunching up?
Hi Martha, I started in the middle of the quilt (7:45 in the video) and I smooth the layers of fabric as I go, We had sprayed the quilt which helps to keep it in place and reduces bunching and you can also pin the quilt if you are concerned about the layers shifting. Hope this helps.
Would this process work for a queen size quilt?
Yes Lori this can work for any size. Just decide what size you want and add extra squares. You will need to take care to smooth the layers and use an adhesive spray and loads of pins to hold the layers in place or you may end up with bubbling. If you are a beginner I would make a small one first and then make the larger size.
Awesome!! How many squares would it take to make this into a twin bed quilt?
A twin bed quilt measurement is approx 39" x 80". So if you use 4 blocks across (38 1/2" finished) and 8 blocks down (76") or 9 blocks down (85 1/2") finished. Thank you!!! I just got my 16 year old daughter to subscribe to your channel, she wants to quilt too! I told her you were the BEST teacher out there!!
Why does anyone ever use binding when you can do it like this? Just for show/to be fancy? :p
These are quick and easy and they look great. But binding a quilt does add a touch of panache 😀.
The batting is what
We use Warm & White batting from the Warm Company. It 's available from Amazon and it can be bought from Spotlight here in Australia.
Excellent teaching as always. Can you tell me which quilt wall mat you use please? Hugs Kate
This is one we made ourselves. Here is a link to the tutorial. It's really easy to make www.alandacraft.com/2015/12/05/how-to-make-a-quilt-design-board-tutorial/
@@alandacraft ooooo a DIY better yet!! The fabric just sticks to it?
Mm
What kind of material do you use for the back?
I used 100% quilting cotton fabric, Rainne.
What is the spray called
We use 505 Temporary Adhesive Spray, SueEllen. It's excellent for keeping the quilt sandwich together (although I often pin as well).
@@alandacraft thank you cause it seemed like a helpful product. But pins are helpful also I'm going to use both now
