- Quilt as you go tutorial: In this quilting tutorial we show you how to make this super easy quilt as you go strip baby quilt. Quilt as you go is a great quilting technique for a beginner.
The beauty of quilt as you go is that as soon as the last strip is in place all you need to do is trim it and bind it. Your top, batting and backing are already quilted in place.
For help with your binding here is a link to our video on 'How to Machine Bind a Quilt': • How to Machine Bind a ...

It really is so simple to make Donna. And I agree, these make awesome gifts. :)

You are most welcome Michelle. These quilts are so quick and easy to make. :)
Love this method! Thank you for a great tutorial.
Thank you Andrea. It's a great way to make an easy baby quilt.
Thanks for a clear tutorial, I will try this, but I think I will start from the center and work out toward each end. This would reduce the bulk filled up in the throat. I watch you all the time!
+Christine Goddard Thank you for your comment and support Christine. There are no hard and fast rules on our projects so by all means start where best suits you. Our Janome machine has a wide throat that holds the bulk quite well, but for those who have a machine with a small throat then starting in the middle will certainly help. It might be a good idea to draw a line across the centre to ensure that the first strip is really straight.
I luv your videos. You break it down with simplicity. Your instructions are so easy to follow. I’m going to make my next quilt using this method. Thanks so much

Jello roll race quilt
This quilt is made from different sized strips, so not a jelly roll quilt. I do have a tutorial on making a jelly roll quilt made from scraps in your stash. Here is the link www.alandacraft.com/2017/08/19/the-scrappy-stash-jelly-roll-race-quilt-variation/ and also a version using a jelly roll www.alandacraft.com/2015/08/21/jelly-roll-quilt-top-tutorial-quilting-for-beginners/
Very informative tutorial. I love watching them all. What machine do you use to quilt? Thank you.
Thank you Alice. This quilt was made on a Janome Horizon Quilting Machine. But we recently bought a Brother Dream Machine so that is what we use now.
Your video was very helpful ....I will subscribe ...and I give you two thumbs up ....👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you Anita, glad you found it helpful.
Very useful but it might be complicated on a big size quilt.
Love love love this video. Did you use cotton fabric or flannel ? TIA
Thank you Linda 😊. We used quilting cotton but you could use flannel for the backing which would add extra warmth. Here is a link to the written instructions www.alandacraft.com/2015/09/18/quilting-tutorial-quilt-as-you-go-baby-quilt/
Thanks alot. So beautiful. Please send me more videos

Great video! Thank you! I’m a beginner quilter. Do I need to use batting for a baby quilt? I’m worried it will be too stiff/warm for the babe.
Batting is generally soft and pliable. We use Warm and Natural, and it is available on Amazon. We use batting in all of our baby quilts. You could use fleece instead if you prefer.
Thank you for this! I am planning a strip quilt for my baby-girl-on-the-way and this will be my first real attempt at a quilt. I am wondering what the difference is between a quilt stitched this way, versus one that is "stitched in the ditch". Is there a noticeable difference in weight, feel, strength, or movement? Thank you in advance for your reply!
+Naomi Austin Thank you for your comment Naomi. We haven't observed any noticeable differences between a quilt done using this method to one being ditched stitched. The only difference is that with the quilt as you go method you are sewing the three layers together at the same time as opposed to making your quilt top, then adding the batting and backing, and then ditch stitching it all together. Either method will be suitable for your baby girl. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you need any help with anything. Happy quilting.
لگتا ہے کہ آپ کسی گلابی پھولوں کے باغ میں ہیں۔ ،💖🌼🌸🥀🍑
Do we use walking foot or just normal foot on the sewing machine
I use a walking foot Nazira, but you can also use a regular foot if you don't have one, either will work. A walking foot just helps to keep the layers together better as you sew.
If using precipitation strips, roughly how long to complete the quilt before squaring up or adding the binding?
Sorry I'm not sure what precipitation strips are. But the quilt doesn't take long, Depending on how much time you spend on it, you should have it done in a couple of hours. The whole quilt can be made in a day.
Newbie here. Is there any kind of fabric between the strips and the batting?
No there isn't anything between the strips and the batting. You just have your fabric strips, batting and backing. Here is a link to the written instructions on the website. www.alandacraft.com/quilting-tutorial-quilt-as-you-go-baby-quilt/
Thank you so much!
Hi! I’m a little bit confused with the measurements for the mismatched strips of fabric you’re using. I found this bundle that includes five 18 x 21-inch pieces, would that be enough to cover one side of the quilt or do I need more? Thank you!
The strips for this quilt are cut across the width of the fabric, Marie. That is the width of fabric from one selvedge edge to the other and is usually around 40"-42". What you have is a bundle of fat quarters. These are only half the width, so you will need to join two pieces together to get the full width. Here is a link to the step by step written instructions that may help make it clearer www.alandacraft.com/2015/09/18/quilting-tutorial-quilt-as-you-go-baby-quilt/
How long were your strips?
We cut the strips across the width of the fabric. Quilting fabric generally comes in widths of 40"-42".
Thank you! Definitely a good project for me 😊
Where are the written directions?
This is a great tutorial but you said you had 7 strips of material 25cm long it looks more like double that or more.
Hi Marchelo, I had 7 different fabrics at 1/4 yard each. These were cut into different sized strips across the width of the fabric, which is generally around 40" - 42". It might help if you check out the written instructions on the website www.alandacraft.com/quilting-tutorial-quilt-as-you-go-baby-quilt/. Let me know if you have any further questions.
Alanda Craft thank you for your reply.
