Would You Buy a Rolex Submariner Over THIS Watch? | Watchfinder & Co.

- There’s a lot that doesn’t make sense in this world, and the community of people who enjoy watches and watchmaking is not immune to it. Here’s an example: these days a Rolex Submariner with a date and ceramic bezel can change hands for well north of £10,000, despite an RRP of some £3,000 less. What this means is that someone who was considering a Rolex Submariner, if they have the budget to stretch to one, can start to look at some rather interesting alternatives instead. And here’s one: the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver.

“Hoarding them like toilet roll” in a few years someone will watch this video and be so confused at the reference.
It's more likely to become a common phrase that enters our collective lexicon... and some linguistics PhD in 100 years will unearth this video in their search for the origins of this phrase
I don’t think anyone will be confused. literally the whole world is under lockdown for a history-book-content global pandemic after all.

Why does exclusivity have to be based on price alone?
Would you rather prefer that the price is so exorbitant that it’s out of reach (which is what AP does) or that you have to “wait your turn” at the AD?
After accidentally discovering this channel a week ago, I've been binge watching daily. I've never been a watch person, I wear a cheap digital Timex or Casio on occasion. When I was actively flying I would wear a cheapish watch with rotating bezel; I forget the brand. BUT, I now so want to own a Rolex or Omega, etc. before I die because of your videos. I really do much appreciate the mechanical wizardry of these fine watches, much like my decades long love affair with mechanical 35 mm cameras.
I don’t like the offshore. I’d much rather have a modern sized Royal Oak

Royal Oak is for royalty tho
I would honestly get a zenith el primero defy and an omega seamaster 300m for the price

those who bought the AP Diver used right after watching this video last year must be so happy. It has since jumped in price by USD 6k and surpassing even Rolex Hulk prices.
The sub is an absolute dream piece for myself. I’ve always had a soft spot for dive watch’s above all else. The fact that they are rugged ready to go pieces but also look completely in place if you’re wearing a suit and tie really shows how versatile they are. Plus my first watch which cemented my love of watch’s was my dads old citizen pro master diver which he never took off. The submariner i think is the perfect watch all round, and being that it was the watch to start dive watch’s makes them so extra special
The question for me is: Get a Grand Seiko Spring Drive GMT SBGE201G for half of the price? In terms of quality/movement/finish grand seiko is where compare to Rolex and AP...between?
TRUE
Buy a second hand grand Seiko. Best thing you'll ever do. They are a better watch they just currently depreciate.
Let someone else take the retail hit and you'll never go wrong. I've got many watches but my GS diver is special.
Guilherme Leite when you buy seiko you’ll lose money when you buy a Rolex you’ll get your money back with profit. So economically the Rolex is cheaper
Y A Watches like these shouldn’t even be sold back. Their pieces of art that should be passed down, unless times get real tough. Would love to have a Rolex or a grand seiko ahah

Not a big fan of the AP, never cared for that shape, but I’d take it over the Rolex since that’s what compared here. But if I were putting my cash down on the counter today, it be the new Omega Seamaster 300M
Totally agreed, it is such an incredible watch especially for the money
Omega all the way! A seamaster, speedmaster and plenty of change from a sub is a no brainer in my eyes.
Ask anybody on the street one watch brand and everybody will know Rolex. Ask them AP and they will think you are talking about a medical exam.

Bought the bb58 returned and got a sub. Bb58 is gorgeous but the gilt dials just isn’t me. Future classic for sure! Can’t wait for a bb58 gmt.
Enrique Florendo nice! Got a sub just like that?
The AP is a scratch magnet which also relies on being perfect to show off its good looks. The service costs are higher because AP insist on doing everything even when just a service would do. AP might have a better movement but its a delicate dress watch movement that will be less durable than the Rolex (I'm speaking from bitter experience when it comes to the AP of course)
I have an AP and its scratched up as well, but I love every little scratch. The petina of a watch does not make it loose value, plus watches are meant to be enjoyed so where it without fear!
True. APs are fragile and delicate. Had troubles with mine ROO twice in the course of 2 years ownership. And the service and parts are outrageously expensive. Rolexes on the other hand are workhorses, able to take on heavy and hard use, almost never giving you problems.
I have both AP Diver and Rolex SUB. AP Diver is on another level!

Better is subjective
AP is a very well crafted watch but it is not as well know or easy to find as Rolex. In terms of brand Rolex like Coca Cola is well known.

The moral of the story is buy the Rolex new and the AP used.
The moral of story is do you really need a dive watch. The answer is simple if you do not dive then no you do not need them.
A Explore 1 would be more than enough for many people as would an Oyster. There are many great watch brands out there offering fantastic watches such JLC, girard perregaux, Nomos, Seiko, Omega and so on for half the price of a Submariner.
Now if you want to dive and also own a luxury watch a Submariner is the perfect choice.

Chris Damn, someone’s salty about Rolex getting called out!
@@centrallyintelligentagency
Called out. It is a time tested luxury watch that does exactly what it is suppose to and it is in demand. Is it you that does not like facts.
bighand69 I don’t mind the facts. I mind the motivation behind them. Do I care that Rolex makes a good product? Not really; this has been known forever. Do I think that the individuals who worship Rolex need to think outside of their comfort zone for once? Most definitely.
As a guy who owns both watches, I can say that my Sub gets much more wrist time. Probably because most of the people I have met mistook the AP for an Hublot, which pretty bothers me considering the price. 😄
Amazing that you talk about the inflated price of Rolex watches when you are part of the problem. It’s you guys buying the watches from scalpers and trickle feeding them out making them seem hard to get that in part drives the prices higher. Now you make these videos like you are some kinda uninvolved third party that didn’t have a hand in it. You did!
Never. AP always
"Which would you choose?" The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Moonphase
JLC Master Ultra Thin Perpetual Calendar is heavy underrated.
Definitely AP. Seriously, I've been around some very snooty, very snobbish crowds albeit serious watch crowds and they talk about Rolex like it's something they gift their schoolboy nephews. One of the people even mentioned Rolex thinks too highly of its brand when in reality people isn't actually looking for Rolex anymore at an AD. The only reason there's a myth about the supply is when you ask an AD if they have a Sub, of course they will say "oh you need to buy it in cash" or "there is a more than 6 months wait" rather than "oh we have 3 in the back and 5 more coming". Another reminded me that technically Rolex isn't really in-house as they just bought their movement maker to make movements exclusively. So she told me how is that any different than Richemont buying Eterna who makes ETA? If Rolex start making movements for other makers, then they will fall decades behind due to their non-improving design. I tend to believe that... Rolex doesn't really have anything more compared to the other makers other than their clout of exclusivity.
I got gifted a Tudor Black Bay 58, and I've never been much for Sporty wacthes; infact I hate bracelets and tend to learn towards owning a JLC Reverso and Cartier Tank. I do have to say, the Tudor Black Bay 58 has to be my favourite watch. It's beautiful, and in my honest opinion; knocks the Submariner out of the ball park.
Yes. What’s the question? I’m saving up for a Sub. Already have the Speedy Pro. Then GS spring drive dress watch and a bunch of Casios and I’ll be set.
Jacob A . So you think ! 😂
Or get an Omega diver for half the cost, twice the specs, and 4x the availability. Why not?
catcat40000 seamaster aquaterra is enough
It's not a Rolex
Agree. Omega is likely the best bag for your buck in your stated range.
@@conqwiztadore2213 you're saying that like it's a bad thing, lol
@jrad044 tbh, by specs alone, a Sub is a 1-2k watch at best
I am the happy owner of an AP diver and a Rolex 16710 Pepsi. Every day I tend to pick the AP because it truly feels more special. However,... I wear my Rolex the most because it is more compact and feels slightly more practical. I See it as owning a Lamborghini Huracan and a Porsche 911. Both cars are very solid and perfect for daily, but you will never pick the Lambo as the daily car because it is way more delicate and unique.
I just cannot understand that for £20.000 the screws are not exactly in the same form as the hole they are in
I think we’re about to see a cliff edge on most watch prices. How steep - who knows.
Rolex has a very limited supply of watches on the market place. The reason why they are hard to get and expensive is due to the fact people like them and want them and there is limited supply.
I think some of the "transitional" watches will drop off sharply (transitional meaning entry point high end watches that "commoners" can afford). The true high end timepieces won't be affected much, if at all, due to the fact that the people who buy them are essentially recession proof.
This all being said it should still be comfortable to wear and I've got to say that AP just isn't comfortable at all
It literally feels twice as big as the Submariner on my wrist.
I would definitely suggest trying them both on to compare.
Always hated how the AP hex screwheads don't sit straight in their holes. And what's with the screwdriver slot on a hex head screw anyway!
"Offshore Diver." AP will come up next with the model "Sky Aviator" for pilots.
Munrais I know plenty folk who are not offshore divers, to be petty, they’re offshore engineers on oil rigs, for instance.
Patience is the key to watch collecting. Go to your AD, get on the list and get the Rolex. Wear it, see if you enjoy it, then sell it.
Rolex using 904L steel what about AP what kind of steel? Better than 904L?
Thanks for another sagacious piece on best practices. I had made the mistake a while ago when I bought an old automatic chronograph that ended up costing more in maintenance and repairs than the initial purchase. Needless to say, it's a "museum" piece now more than practical wear.
if we are talking about maintenance over the next ten years there is also a question of market over the next ten years. The Rolex bubble could burst and the price of the sub could go down below its retail price and in the case the Rolex would cost way more to own
The sub is the most legendary dive watch in the world for a reason. Rolex keeps getting knocked for some reason but as a watch nerd my self I consider Rolex one of the best watch brands in the world. Rolex has been the most worshipped watch brand for decades and we all know marketing can get you up there but quality will KEEP you up there. The Royal oak is my personal grail time piece. Great video as always.
Rolex rarely markets the watch yet everybody knows about the brand.
People knock Rolex mostly because they’re dying to get one but they can’t, unless they pay high premium on the Grey Market for it. You can’t just walk in a store and ask for a Sub. Not everyone understands this reality. An unknowing person who walks in to a Rolex store ready to buy a watch and gets told no, will most probably knock the brand for not selling them one.
...and people think the helium escape valve on the Omega PO is a wart!
Regardless of the watches, Man you are an icon... truly enjoy your videos. 👍🏻
Sorry, I choose Rolex .I owned them both and the AP can't withstand what the Sub does. The Sub is a worry free megatank, the AP not so much...
Shouldn’t a diver have a rotating bezel? Isn’t that kind of what makes a duvet a diver? So you can see how much oxygen you have left.
And how much will it cost for the service on the TEN YEAR OLD AP?
I got my Sub at retail from the AD and the most affordable Royal Oak (>37mm) I found was three times what I payed for the Sub, so to me it's a no-brainer...
The Royal Oak from video is $15K brand new, the particular Sub is $10K.
Any steel sport Rolex at retail is a no-brainer, isn't it?
Jean Raspail yeah, sell it and get a few better watches
@@jeanraspail2979 mostly yeah, although there are some models I don't really like (Explorer II, Airking...)
@@smashexentertainment676 You're right...when comparing prices I filtered out anything under 38 and over 42, so the 'Offshore' version (44mm) was filtered out. But it's still about twice the price of the Sub at retail, especially if you take the real Sub (no date) like I did, and bought it at the old (pre-'20) price of €6900.
these days it seems the audio has been sounding quite weird. echo-ey with reverberations, the voice for the stock pre recorded OP is much better.

Chris bwahahahahahaha 🤣🤣
Stop looking at watches then. The Sub is an iconic watch whether you like it or not.
4:49. That hexagonal screw looks bad to me. Not aligned , and a lot of space between the screw and the hole walls.
I had the opportunity to try an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and a Rolex Submariner on my wrist. I remember the more magical feeling I had on my wrist when I put on the AP. After I left the store however, my mind couldn't help but think about how much I love the Submariner more. I would still take a Submariner over a Royal Oak. I wonder if the reason why I loved the Royal Oak so much in that moment was due to sheer rarity and the history of Gerald Genta in my head.
£10K? I decided on a different route.. Omega SMP 300, Rolex OP39 and Tudor BB58. Needless to say, I’m not missing a Sub.
Rolex is my choice between the two
Ap offshore is my grail tbh. I think I'm big enough to qualify for wearing it
I actually like the Rolex Sub > AP Royal Oak
Do you also write for Top Gear? Those vivid descriptions of the Ferrari is incredible, feels like you're a bit of a car lover too.
Still waiting the Odysseus review...
I just purchased my first Rolex, a new Submariner date at retail after an 8month wait. Looking forward to collecting it from Pragnell in London when travel restrictions are lifted.
There’s about 10 diver watches I’d take over the AP even without price being considered.
Submariner, GP Sea hawk, GS spring drive diver, Pam submersible 959, Fifty fathoms blue dial, Omega seamaster 300 white dial, UN deep dive diver, Bell and Ross 03-92 blue, just off the top of my head. The AP diver turquoise dial is amazing though.
Both would be wonderful watches to have on the wrist. It seems like the used market for anything but a Rolex is the way to go now!
Rolex holds its value best. Others, not so much. You can’t even buy an old beat up Sub with a crackled crystal for 5000$
Blown away by the masterful narration and videography. Just wow.
I pick a solid 18k gold 1965 omega Seamaster Deville, and $7700 in change. It’s on my wrist now, along with my Vostok Amphibia SE. Every day. And keeps time well within COSC specs.
Yeah, the AP diver is nice but wait to it comes time to service your AP, you/ll only wish you had bought the Sub & you don't even get the awesome Rolex bracelet & clasp. You forgot to mention the price of service was for basic service, wait to you need to pay for AP parts & trust me you can pretty much count on needing parts replacement on a AP. Ferrari services prices goes along with owning a Ferrari no matter how cheap the entrance fee is to get in. Welcome to the big leagues.
Would love to see a video covering the Explorer ref 217270, interested to hear your take on it!
Actually I loved the submariner aesthetics since I was a kid buying my first watch almost 25 years ago looking similar to the submariner. That’s how much I love it. Bought mine 6 years ago just walked in to an AD and it was sitting there so it was not a hype ar intense buying. For me ( and I am not comparing the Movements or finishing) I felt like the offshore is a childish watch and tooooo bulky for my taste I think of it more like a fashion thing (unlike the Royal oak which I love and respect and considering it in the future if I have the funds to do that) so, thank you I am sticking to my much loved submariner whether it’s too common or if it’s not available due to hoardings
The classic Royal Oak, not the Off Shore, is, together with the Nautilus my favorite watches. Gerald Genta was a genious.
The AP diver is by far the best AP model.....i know because I own several AP RO models
What can you say about the Chinese tourbillon watches coming out in the market? The ERA, Aventi and even Ciga ( though not tourbillon). They cost 1 percent of the branded tourbillon.
I can personally relate to the topic of this video. I was fortunate to purchase my first Rolex, the Submariner Date last year. But I did wonder throughout the purchasing process what else I could by with submariner money +/- a few thousand dollars. When it came down to it, the Rolex just made the most sense, especially for someone just starting their watch collecting journey. I mean if I start with an AP what am I going to realistically move on to?
Just buy a watch you love. Why should you care about upgrades or other watches? As long as you have the money for an AP, I recommend you buy one. As they say, it’s always better to own 1 good thing than 100 trash items.
Interesting pieces. Regards.
If you’re a real watch enthusiast you know that buying an AP, PP, or VC for the same price as a Sub gives you a much better quality product in terms of watchmaking. But at the end of the day it all comes down to taste and preference.
Given the spectacular rise in Sub values (even used examples) I think a buyer could be looking at a direct choice between the Rolex and a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. For me, if that were ever a choice, I would be rocking the FF and loving the fact that everyone is wondering why I would want a watch named after the staple product of a bakery?
Rampant Pygmy Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is just way in another level than a simple Rolex sub , I went for Glashütte SeaQ Panorama Datum tho ... even over the Blancpain
That AP bezel outter edge seems refinished too lacking crisp borders between the finishes.
For me the Rolex. Not persé because of the name but more because it looks solid but stil is beautifull and elegant. Also because the design is timeless, it will always look modern and wearable. And yes, also because it is a Rolex with all bennefits for the future like keeping up the value, being timeless and easy to find a servicepoint from an AD.
Kindly review GLASSHUTTE Panomatic lunar white dial
I don't generally like the AP Royal Oak but this diver has me won over - I'd buy the AP!
It wouldn’t be a "predicament" for me…because the only one I could afford would be a Submariner sold on a corner on Canal Street. And I personally doubt they carry any APs.
🤣
For long term stability, service cost and daily wear-ability, there is no better choice than Rolex in entry and middle level of luxury watches.
Well said
Does any watch beat the Submariner (in its price range) when it comes to appreciation and/or re-sale value? Of course there are better watches but it's difficult to argue with the market. Your point on depreciation is sane but doesn't admit the extent to which resale value affects purchasing decisions, for some.
£10k for the AP diver....where?
Great video as usual and with a lot of reason.
I bought Rolex in the golden era of 2011-2014, and even than old, weathered Rolex collectors were considering the prices asked as crazy.

I have a sub black and green, I want an AP but the not used and can't justify double the price. AP is just a killer piece. true around the costs, maintenance etc. Most people forget about that.
Please do a video presenting the Zenith Doublematic. I think that's better than both of the above. Thank You.
Love the AP! Ceramic diver is on my goals list.
How about Ball Watches ! I never see any on this channel. Please compare for entry level purple like myself just getting into the game.

How about “Bali” watches ....... never see any of those in this channel either........ha ha
We are in 2022 now and there is no more depreciation for AP divers. Thanks to this video I suppose :) Twice a Submariner on a secondary market as well.
I know I'd get flack for saying this, because I know they're not very heavily regarded, but personally I'd rather stretch to get like a Hublot Classic Big Bang for around the same as the two options, give or take. I know some would have a bone to pick with its movement, but personally I like the design more than the Submariner or the AP Royal Oak.
Would rather have the submariner on looks alone
Indeed.
With this mindset is the reason why they are so many fashion watches out there . 'Because of the looks'

The sub is by no means a “good looking watch”. It has a bulky case a narrow bracelet and unbalanced dial/face staring at you all day long. And it’s everywhere.... It’s like having a G-shock in middle school.
You can buy this sub for way less in HK. You get a Hulk or Kermit for that money. Prices are dropping fast. A better comparison would have been the Glashutte SeaQ but you probably didn't have one for sale?
can you do a video of rolex explorer ii vs sub?
I used to love AP, the hexagonal screws and the bezel in octagon provided a very strong, steady yet fashionable impression. However, it’salso where it screwed up, because by reading all the comments of AP owners, seems like it performs in an opposite way, so disappointed it is not as reliable as it looks.
I tried to force myself to like Royal Oak, but so far it didn't happen. (Like I avoided Panerai until I tried one on) Sub at 40mm is too small for my preferences, so I'd pick a Sea Dweller.
I bought a Tudor Tiger Chronograph (Panda Dial) in 1998 for $2500, I told myself, I'll get the Rolex Sub next, they were around 4k then, I never got around to it.
In 2009 the RRP of the AP Royal Oak Offshore Scuba was $13,700. Against Bell & Ross BR02 instrument in Pink gold Bezel at $22,000
