11:55 It took seeing such a blown-up image of the unit for me to realize the Magyar Huszar has a Tom Selleck mustache! Magyar P.I., my favorite show from the 80's.
I think their team bonus affects archers because Magyars are focused on light cavalry, so at least price-wise they would pair well with something very gold-focused like the archer line. Probably not really the best play, but you can see how they would fit together at least on the surface
Would love to see a factions concept video of factions you'd love to see added! I've always thought the Celts should be broken up into the Irish and Scots, the Vikings into the Norwegians, Swedes and Danes etc.
An idea for the oncoming huge balance pack: they should need no houses in dark age (like the Huns), but would need them as soon as they reach Feudal. What makes the Magyars a mediocre 1vs1 civ instead of a good one, is the lack of an eco bonus. By not having to build those 3-4 houses in dark age, and postponing them to the time Feudal is being researched, they would get an early game buff, exactly at the time they need it the most. (it seems they will lack the +1 pierce armor tech for the infantry which many other nations will get in the new balance patch, so they need some buff in order to not fall behind) And this would even be historically accurate: in the early middle ages they were a nomadic civilization similar to the Huns (so similar in fact that many myths claim that they are the descendants of the Huns) and they even settled down in the same region where the center of the Hun empire was. And they were basically the only nomadic civilization from the migration period to survive to modern times, because they transitioned to a settled lifestyle like the other European nations had, while those other nations which kept to their nomadic lifestyles, went extinct or got melted into others. Therefore making them nomadic for the Dark Age (not needing houses) but making them like the others civs after reaching Feudal, would make them more interesting and would give them a much needed early game eco bonus. And it would also be historically accurate.
Suggestion: intro info about where in the world the civ is based, what years they were active, notable warriors/rulers and wars fought in. Love the videos

Spirit of the Law i have beat you at your own game: In the video about the Spanish you mention that their conquistador does benefit from the extra fire rate from the gunpower bonus. However here you mention that their Magyar hussar doesn't benefit from the team bonus discounting light cav. Both cases are completely identical, however: A unique unit only available to a civ that gets a static (none age calling) bonust on a specific group of military units where the unique unit falls within the group but doesn't nessesarily gets affected because its is only available to that cis so the bonus is baked into its ''main''stats :p
There is a major difference in the wording, which clearly indicates why this isn't the case. The Spanish bonus is about gunpowder units/the specific armour class, so a diverse group of units (including conqs, but also janissaries, hand cannons, bombards, cannon galleons etc). The Magyar bonus is limited to the scout line however, which means only scout cav, light cav and hussars. There isn't a specific armour class for hussars, and even if it did exist, that wouldn't neccessarily mean that the Magyar huszar would be part of it
Because Magyars have no eco bonus, their military bonuses have to be timed and usually asks that you stay ahead of your opponent to take advantage but that is hard to do without eco bonus. They do have imp capabilities provided that you have castles and hussars created without gold.
They are my favourite army to play behind Chinese purely because of their tech flexibility and counter matching, then Magyars for their speed and aggression if you can time things right.

I would have to disagree with a B for siege. To my knowledge, they are one of only 3 civs that have neither bombard cannon or siege ram (Excluding the elephant ram civs). The other two civs being Britons and Japanese, who both get techs to make their Trebuchets significantly stronger.
They're a fun late game civ no doubt but I do so wish they had some sort of eco bonus and/or better siege. Access to bombard cannon would not only address some weaknesses but also be historically accurate. Middle age Magyar armies were very gunpowder focused. Also other strong cavalry civs have bombard cannon such as Franks, Lithuanians, Malians, Spanish, Portuguese, Burgundians, Poles, Berbers, and Teutons. The ones that don't such as Khmer, Tatars or Cumans have some crazy eco bonuses and also siege alternatives such as Siege Ram (Cumans & Khmer) or insane trebs (Tatars). I just feel that Magyars are being jibbed here for no particular reason. It would help their late game in some closed maps where they're clearly terrible.
A good early game historically accurate bonus would be to not require houses in the dark age. But require them as soon as reaching feudal, unlike the Huns which never need houses. This could make gameplay more unique and interesting, and would give them a much needed early game eco bonus.
Great video! Spirit of the law: Video request! Quick wall/ unfinished buildings or buildings under construction stats. And how easily an onager or mangonel can destroy an unfinished building. Sometimes it doesn’t. You know why? How much damage I need? How many vills I need to prevent from happening to me?
I think it can be a interesting idea to give Magyar hussar 1 attack range like step lancer since Magyar is nomad civ but don’t have access to step lancer, also those Magyar hussars have pretty long lance 😂
I thought the original SotL theme was supposed to survive in the civ overviews? Pretty sure that was the statement given to Nelson in your interview with him… now I gotta head over to your full version upload of the piece to get my fix
That is not a fun fact, but between an incorrect statement and oversimplification. We aren't descendants of the Huns neither culturally, genetically, nor linguistically. It is possible, that many magyar tribes fought alongside the huns (but that is true for a lot of nomadic tribes), but they weren't a majority or the base of the hun's language and culture.
@@fenrirr22 Yep, that's just a fun myth. Even if we take the beautiful Legend of the White Stag seriously, Hunor and Magor were brothers, not descendant/ascendant.
Personally I would like to see an equal resources fight comparison between Magyar Huzars and Magyar hussars. One is cheaper and weaker, and the other is stronger and more expensive, I would like the comparison to factor in the unique tech taking out gold, then do the same without the unique tech, Etc.
Look ma, I'm famous on the internet! :D Didn't suspect my comment would make it in a video, but thanks for featuring it. Also, as another commenter pointed out - since it's been a while I read the story - Toldi was actually a noble from birth, just treated as a peasant by his family, especially by his brother. Still a folk hero though. Again, I don't know if this story was the original Forgotten mod team's inspiration, but I think it certainly fits, even if the story is fiction, and the bonus is very situational in-game.
Fun civ, definitely deserve more love, but it bothers me more than it should that their unique unit is just called the "Huszar". That "z" is pulling an aaaawful lotta weight there lads
Honestly, as someone who does play the Magyars somewhat often, I still think it is entirely BS that the Magyars Scout-line discount is just worse than the Berbers bonus once you get into castle. Sure Berbers don't get Paladin, but they do get Hussars that end up just being objectively superior to Magyar ones in Imp, alongside having cheaper Camels and Cavaliers. I know it might make the Magyars too strong, but I really want them to buff it in Imperial Age, since by that point you probably will have a castle and are just making Magyar Huszars anyway.

I thought the original SotL theme was supposed to survive in the civ overviews? Pretty sure that was the statement given to Nelson in your interview with him… now I gotta head over to your full version upload of the piece to get my fix
Fun fact: We Magyars are technically in the game 2 times because our ancestors were the Huns :)
Magyars are current day Hungarians right?
@@jaishkhan7442 Yes.
2:44 That one vil coming out of thin air
Personally I would like to see an equal resources fight comparison between Magyar Huzars and Magyar hussars. One is cheaper and weaker, and the other is stronger and more expensive, I would like the comparison to factor in the unique tech taking out gold, then do the same without the unique tech, Etc.
Well if you ever get wolf rushed you can go "An army of wolves? How quaint."
Look ma, I'm famous on the internet! :D
Didn't suspect my comment would make it in a video, but thanks for featuring it.
13:41 - Yep, that's just about sums up Hungarian history.
I wait for big new update dude very interesting
Yeah I'm pretty sure the villager vs wolves bonus is a direct reference to Toldi, otherwise the bonus doesn't make any sense.
The main reason why the magyar huszar is stronger than the regular hussar is because of his moustache.
3:45 : The crusaders who ran out of food in Hungary are searching for your location.
3:47 as a hungarian that is the only hungry joke i have ever heard that was actually funny
I like the goth game plan.
still my fav civ.
I am surprised that with all the squarespace sponsorships, you don't have a legal firm side hustle called Spirit of The Law.
Spirit of the log
Also missing Squires for the trash units.
"...with the downside that your soldiers are maybe a little Hungary" ;) lmao I see what you did there!
Can you start making chapter in yoru videos? It really helps a TON
Well played Spirit. This bonus might make your troops a little ‘Hungary’
Probally need redo all the civs are the new April patch 11
Fun civ, definitely deserve more love, but it bothers me more than it should that their unique unit is just called the "Huszar". That "z" is pulling an aaaawful lotta weight there lads
I play magyars and Burgundians but I'm in the market for a new civ
Shout out to sotl for being the goat
I do miss their old Wonder, it was more simplistic.
Hey, what is the name of this ending happy song with piano? It stucked in my head so much 😅
