The original Age of Empires 2 intro video has a wonderful subtle detail... the Lewis Chessmen!

- The original intro video for Age of Empires 2 contained a fitting analogy to the medieval world that inspired the game: the Lewis Chessmen. Sadly it wasn't brought back for the Definitive Edition in 2019 so here's a roundup of the significance of these fabulous artefacts which make a brief appearance in one of the greatest strategy games ever made.
Nice, I'm one of the 6 guys that worked on this animation. I made those chess pieces. That was a really fun animation to work on.
Awesome! You did some fine work there
Thank you for your work, it inspired generations.
You have made a classic, thank you
This is the best videogame ever created, you are a god to me. I started playing AOE in 1999, my aunt is a history teacher and she was amazed by the game. Thank you very much!! 🎉
I love you
That's what I call a quality video. Thanks for the nostalgia!
Thanks Anton, glad you enjoyed it
One of the best intro videos. It provided a great feel that matched the game itself
This is such a quality aoe2 lore contribution to the community. We love this game!
funny enough i just recently bought the de version and was really sad not seeing the old intro. remember loved watching it as a kid.
Great creative idea for a video! Well executed too. Enjoyed it very much.
Thanks for saying, very nice to hear!
You can get the original intro in the DE as a mod, you know...
I didn't know that. Will try it out!
It is so crazy that they made those pieces by using walrus tusks, all the hard tasks been thorugh the manufacture for a piece of high class worth entertainment. Now you can just 3D print a whole set in a single day.
the only difference being the modern ones look and feel like crap
but it won't be made of walrus tusks then :)
What a well edited and humorful video!
I subscribed! :)
Really nice video! Was actually surprised you don't have more subcribers
Brilliant video! :)
Meanwhile, I can't imagine playing the old version now, without shift-clicks, multi-queueing, preserving resources in villager hands and (hallelujah!) farms reseeding... (and many more QOL things, actually)
my game
I’ve always wondered if chess has been played by the same rules since inception or if it used to be played differently like if queens couldn’t be moved diagonally or something.
The rules have changed quite I bit I believe. At the time this chess set was being used in the 12th century queens could only move 1 square diagonally.
@@MissionPast sounds like a very different game to be sure
There is an analysis of this aoe intro chess match somewhere on YT! :O
Apologies for digging up a three year old comment, but of course Chess has developed overtime. An example of this is that the double step move for the pawn wasn't originally included, but since a lot of the start of the game involves pushing pawns forward, at some point the rules were adapted so that a pawn could essentially take two turns at once. This is also where the anomalous rule of En Passent came from, since a pawn skipping the threatened space was not the intention of this rule, so the En Passent move essentially unskips the second move by capturing the pawn as if it had moved only once.
Rules like Castles and En passant only came up in the 18th / 19th centrury as far as I am aware
I wouldn't really call it a subtle detail to be honest. But a nice video!
I love the intro, they really should remaster it for DE
wish i kept my original box...
DE is better in many wayd, but the love devs put into the og one is unmatched
6.1K views over 3 years. That's horrifying. Our society simply does not value quality, burying videos like this :(
yes the game intro is a sad but im missing the william wallace mission 1 intro more since it gave you a look into what could be part of your game and i loved it every time that i watched it and the call to arms to help wallace in his campain even if his campain is a bit of a letdown but that is a tutorial for ya
I thought I was the only one who thought it was sad. The ending always left me feeling really sad
Liking for relic generating gold pun
Oh my that cow killed me
The improved graphics?!? Are all of you serious?!? There is beauty in the original graphics, not to mention the 3 most horrible graphical changes they have done...
1. The hp bar on the units are so bright and bulky, the original ones are thinner and smoother, way more better!
2. Most of the occlusion of objects and buildings get overlapped by units on the corner, making the visuals absolutely unrealistic!
3. The collapsing building graphics are, yes more realistic, but the solidity and obstacle of the falling building is absolutely inconsistent, while a gate, or a castle is still collapsing, where most of the building is still intact, the units that have destroyed that building are able to passing through it, absolutely horrible and unsustainable to see, the remastered edition is just a waste of money, The Conquerors, 2001 is the best and most stable version to play still today!!!
I play the 2013 version which is supposed to be "HD" but basically looks like the OG game. you do have 3 DLC's for it which are pretty nice
Back in my day!!!
Back when for competitive online play, only one civilisation was picked, because it was simply better than all the others.
Back when the AI cheated resources or made ridiculous armies😅
@@martijn9568 yes Sir but we are speaking about aesthetic, not about multiplayer and AI decisions
+1 like + 1 sub...
the rook was a tower in the game 😅😅😅
