Aussie saddlemaker here. This presenter knows what he is talking about and I suggest following his recommendations. I like the expression 'fashion trash'. I am gonna use it with my customers!
I am always wary of leather belts with stitched around the edges, they tend to show made cheap and often have a non leather insert and do not last long. That wrinkly black leather is an indicator of lower quality leather such as the presenter said - belly leather. For making a belt, that belly leather is not desirable, too soft. Belly leather may be good for other applications such as bag leather.
The presenter is correct about the buckle, go for solid stainless steel, solid brass, solid German silver (not often encountered). If they tarnish or become scratched, the metal can be polished again and again to give the original shine! Though, some customers prefer with brass, an antique look. Italian leathers are amongst the worlds best belt leathers.
Stitching across the strap to hold the buckle and keeper in place is done for one reason only - cost reduction. It is so quick compared to riveting or hand stitching. There are specialist sewing machines designed to carry out each stitch run in about 3-5 seconds. Directron is one brand (British). The disadvantage is that the buckle tends to be loose and sloppy on the belt compared to correctly riveted or hand stitched belts. I hope the presenter does more vids. I once had a belt with a stud rather than a rivet - allowng you to change the buckle. It wasn't a bad idea.
A lot of belts we wear here in Texas are made like that.... Cowboy's have to put their latest rodeo belt buckles on somehow! Lol

As a gun toting American, I can't tell you how many cheap department store belts I went through before buying a proper, well made belt. People go cheap on belts and don't realize how expensive cheap really is when you have to re-buy a dozen times. For close to the last 20 years I've been daily wearing a Beltman, dual layer bullhide belt (which doesn't look quite as classy as yours, but is also a bit heavier to accommodate the weight of a sidearm). One thing you might look at is how they attach the buckle, instead of using a single Chicago Screw and a line of stitching, they use two Chicago Screws (one goes where you put the line of stitching) which allow you to swap out buckles (something that is very popular among Americans with a more western/cowboy style of dress).
Anyway, congrats on the very nice looking belts. I'm sure that people who order them will get a very long life out of them.
@@IDKline I have several pieces that I rotate through, but my main EDC is a SIG P365 these days (and when I dress up its an early 70s vintage S&W M38 Airweight with a beautiful set of stag grips). As for the SCOTUS decision, it doesn't mean any criminals can "pack heat legally" it just means that states that have "May Issue" permitting systems will have to institute "Shall Issue" (in other words they can't deny a law abiding citizen that meets all the legal criteria their right to get a permit and carry).
The SCOTUS case will probably mean more good people will legally carry in places where the criminals already do illegally. But I live in a Constitutional Carry state so it didn't really impact me.

Hey Tim, you are one multi-talented guy! In Australia we have RM Williams that produce high quality leather goods. As the saying goes, "buy nice or buy twice (or thrice). I have one of their belts are they made of solid hide. Very Nice!

Yes, I love the idea of sending in a buckle. Too often, I find a belt I love with a buckle I can’t stand, so I don’t buy it.
Another idea, and I’m sure there are pros and cons, is to make a belt with snap closures to allow buckle changes. I own two belts with this feature and I can attest to the fact that they are secure. What are your thoughts on this?
The biggest challenge when buckle customization is an option is finding a good buckle supplier. Do you have any recommendations?

Nature Boy,I grew up with that song playing on the radio,Also by the same artist (Nat King Cole) Mona Lisa.Perhaps you could play an arrangement of that at some point.I'm afraid my waist line has gone the way of the Dodo,but heavy leather braces with nice sharp snap grips for my leather motorcycle trousers could be interesting........................................
My current fave version of "Nature Boy" is Kurt Elling. (Not Gypsy!) But then Nat Cole, of course.
Few things not meant to knock your video these are my thoughts, yes you should always use vegetable/bark tanned leather (no latigo or chrome leather). You should of stated that Genuine Leather is the saw dust of leather. Another way to look at it is Genuine Leather is like OSB Board (plywood). They make Genuine leather from the trimming from the Blue stage of the leather processing. What type of bark tanned, well that’s up to you. I use Full Grain I won’t go with anything less then split. Not sure what you mean by rubber edging? Like to know what you mean by that. I personal don’t use any petroleum products, think about it this way, go to a auto repair shop and shake the mechanics hand, notice how ruff their hands are. Leather is just skin. I use bees wax and other nature products. I think its important to state all belts should be line up with a gig line. The buckle is even with your zipper and the tip should go right past the first loop of your pants. You may want to change tanneries if they are processing (cutting ) and making belt materials from “whole” hides and cutting away the belly part. Maybe you didn’t clearing it enough and I miss understood you? Love your song you are very talented player.
Interesting! Ive always bought average/bad belts just because I don’t know better. Currently wearing a Levi’s belt and couldn’t tell you if it was decent or crap
First, I'm amazed by this video and I wish it has more vies and reach, because the information in it is very valuable. I had my S T Dupont belt for more than 7 years now and the leather is kind of worn out, the buckle however is in relatively good condition, it has some scratches, but I couldn't find the same buckle in their website now and I really want to have the same or similar belt that I've been wearing for the past years. I would be interested to send you the buckle, I also live in the EU so it shouldn't be a problem.

I wear a leather cattle collar from Weaver leather about 35 dollars 1 3/4 wide
I went trough many premium stores in Munich, looking for a high quality belt, but my main problem is to find ones with a stainless steel buckle. It is a pitty when I see that quality leather belt was matched with brass plated buckle which is worn after only one year of wearing, while leather reamins in almost perfect condition.
A plated buckle costs wholesale under 4 Euros. A stainless steel buckle about 8.
@@CasebackWatches That is a good info. So, what is the problem for them of adding those 4€ plus sales margin on the top of e. g. 100€ retail price buckle?

Rather than having us send you a buckle, design the belt to have 2 snaps so that the belt end can be opened and the buckle inserted.
