  • In the mid-1980s, a high school graduate in Germany wanted to give himself a present: an Omega Speedmaster Professional, built in 1968. A bargain at the time, today it is considered by many to be the holy grail of vintage Omegas. But is the watch genuine? Do all the parts match? A fake or a Franken watch?

Fine examination & fully agree with your conclusion. I've seen that level of "insider' frankenwatching" with movement parts from the same brand, but hardly so many elements from different references. Very interesting result, honestly. I can imagine a no-nonsense watchmaker putting it together and being happy because it just works.

99.9% of people would care less if the components were from different years, so long as it's all genuine Omega and works well 👍 Us watch nerds are the only ones who would be concerned; and I agree with you, wear it and enjoy. Just don't try to sell it as something that it is not.

Absolutely, wear it and enjoy it for what it is. As I understand, still OEM, but the parts are from varying years. And as you mentioned, no worries of a ding here and there if all were correct.

Hi Tim: Whether it’s legitimate or not, whether it’s beautiful or not, the important thing about this watch is that “It’s alive! It’s alive!”. Interesting research and analysis on this timepiece. Regards from Chile!

Still a lovely watch. With its smaller case it would fit my skinny wrist. Great video. 👍

I guess the owner is more likely to keep the watch now, knowing it isn't that "Grail Speedy"... Every cloud has a silver lining!

My father owned one with the same case shape, with a gold omega symbol, BUT no professional on the dial. Seamaster logo on the back.

All those parts are original, so as far im concerned I would consider it original and use it with pride. Selling it might be another story.

Totally agree. I own a Tudor Prince Oysterdate "big rose" with all original parts but from different years and I don't give a f... about if it's a frankenwatch or what, it's a gorgeous watch for me and I enjoy it a lot

I understand original is worth more but theres nothing wrong with frankens at the right price. Is the watch well done or not and does the price reflect what you are getting. If so, enjoy. Rather a franken then in the trash bin.

My 1994 "25 years Apollo 11" Speedmaster ran as daily beater to June 2016, almost 22 years before the "861" movement needed a service!

Limited editions are rife these days. If all of the parts are made by Omega and it was mine I'd think of it as my personal limited edition and just enjoy.

Oh, boohoo - car fans are well aware, that it is often not possible to get every part from the same model of the same year, so if it fits and makes a whole functioning car, that is ok, even at a car show, as long as things are all original! In the real car world, many shops will fit pieces from different years, as they are on hand, and the customers smile at the savings!
    REALITY CHECK:
Omega, Tudor, and others are discussed in some forums to just replace entire calibres, to speed a repair or service. They even seem to do it as a standard procedure, setting aside the service piece, fitting a new or refurbished part, and doing the repair or service on the old one in another shop. If the case-back took enough of a beating to not be water-tight anymore, it may well even have been the Omega shop, that put a new case-back on, and replaced the calibre with a new or serviced/refurbished working one! The old case-back is in the garbage, and the old calibre may have ended up in garbage as well, or got fixed later and re-used in another watch, which is also now a "Frankenwatch". The makers themselves may thus well be the largest suppliers of "Frankenwatches"!
