The Runcam 5 Orange is the first entry from Runcam that I would consider to be a legit GoPro alternative. Is it as good as GoPro? No. But it's at least 1/2 the price of a GoPro, and it finally produces a natural-looking image that GoPro fans may be able to tolerate, instead of the hyper-saturated wide-dynamic-range image of previous RunCam HD cams.

The irony of a camera review where the last segment is out of focus. lol :p
It was focused.. On his desk
Runcam 5 Orange just released a new firmware that optimized the EIS algorithm. Field of view is not nearly as decreased as before and they fixed the weird glitch explained in this video.
Well. A little bit of info I wasn't aware of. I was a little pissed at the 5 Orange's EIS. Thanks!!!!
Can the camera be used as a usb webcam ?
@@jvank2975 I just saw someone state that you can! They’re saying in Windows 10 you should be able to just plug in by USB. It will show as iCache V37 in devices. Sounds like you just plug in. Recognizes it as storage device. Then they say single button press then you get it as a webcam.
@@jvank2975 No, you can't use it as a webcam. You can only access it like a flash drive

I'm Joshua Bardwell, and you're gonna like this camera today.
Love this camera, flying it on my 3 inch later today after work. Thanks for the video JB!
Thanks for the video. I did learn something today as I usually do when watching your videos. I have already purchased the RC Orange, but have decided to sign up for Patreon.
Very helpful, thank you. I bought one of these and was about to spend a load of time figuring out which settings to use.
Thanks for the review! I have the original RunCam 5, which I've been more than happy with, and the front glass element and batteries (there's actually two, at least on the 1st edition) can be replaced with some effort, but it requires dismantling the unit from backside (unless the glass is completely broken and can be teared out from outside). I even received an instruction video on how to properly do it from RunCam when asking for instructions.
Just finished printing my mounts for my runcam. Haven't had a chance to fly it yet but really looking forward to it. Thanks again for another informative video
did you have sd card problems ,only a samsung evo plus u3 card will work in mine ,took me ages to find a real one and not a fake (i had no idea fake sd cards were a thing) the real ones have a white edge instead of a black edge like most cards
I was waiting for this exact video :D Thanks!
Very thankful for this vid! Answered all the questions I had! I'm gonna go this route for my next cam. One of reasons also is how light it is. Been using a hero 2 and think its hitting retirement lol. Thanks Joshua!!
Thank you very much for your in-depth investigation of the resolutions, I've watched a few other reviews and none of them showed what was what as clearly as you have done in this video.
I'm extremely tempted to buy one now for its 1440P@60fps recording as I can do the distortion correction with a barrel correction filter in post processing to get 16:9 rectilinear footage that uses the entire sensor like I do with my Xiaomi Yi's.
thank you very much, JB and happy weekend 🙏🙏
Thanks for your video and the informations. Yesterday i get my RunCam 5 Orange, my first action cam. I think, I'll find enough time for it at the weekend 🤷🏼♂️ but it will be a little adventure, and I'm really looking forward to testing it extensively
That's a thorough review! Good job man!
The funny thing is in your intro you say “and your going to learn something today” and i dont know how but every time i watch your videos I genuinely learn something which is why in subscribed👍 i have an eachine wizard {my first fpv drone} but cant afford a camera on top😂 i had a little cheap action camera on top but the lens got scratched and cant afford another.. looks like a great camera though
Sam Faulkner i have a runcam 3s with a couple cracks in the case but still works great, id be happy to donate to you. hit me up and ill send it to you.
Andrew FPV 😱😱🤯🤯 I cant believe this omg thanks you so much
Andrew FPV Could you possibly tell me your email or facebook so i can msg you, thanks😁😁
Andrew FPV Just which ever is easiest to private message you
Great review. What I was waiting for. And it's bright orange 💖
Josh... so appreciate your insightful and extremely well informed commentaries! Can you please comment on outputting the signal from the Runcam 5 to a vtx (presumably using the Runcam cable) and what the latency is when doing so?
8:09 HyperSmooth had similar issues when it was first released, it was only in second or third update that it got really good on quads. Still a well tuned quad is gonna look better than any stabilization. Anyway, it's no GoPro, but looks pretty good for half the price, or so you might think until you take into calculation how robust the Sessions are and that you can get them replaced for even less money than this costs if you manage to break them with GoPro Plus (or even less with BestBuy warranty if you can still get it somehow). I don't think Sessions are gonna get any less demand.
A definite option, for when I kill my session 5 , great video JB
I think that runcam should partner with Reelsteady to include sensor on the camera and files. And make the app compatible for stabilizing and they will have a really great product for a good price point. Specially now that GoPro has leave the session form factor
This is exactly what is needed.
Yeeees do that please.
GoPro OWNS ReelSteady (as ofMarch 13, 2020) . Plus I don't think the RC 5 has a gyro in it which is what Reelsteady uses to smooth the video out.
Then it be 300$
Gyroflow has arrived and made this camera a banger
Mine arrived today and I’m happy to have it over paying for a session either second hand or a refurbished GoPro.
I bought the runcam 5 and thought it was very good, but then a friend wanted to trade me a couple of quads for it. I didn’t have a quad I could mount it to and was only using it on my motorbike and the video looked great. But I need to do some things to my bike before I do some more riding, so I traded it, and regretted it almost straight away, got to buy some parts but then I’ll have a big enough and fast enough quad to put together soon. So, I ordered the runcam 5 orange from Banggood and it will soon be sent out, it’s on back order. I’m glad after seeing both this video and others like it, I’m positive that I’m going to love it when I finally get it.
Thanks for the review. I am not a drone pilot, I drive RC crawlers amd bashers. I have been looking at a small cam to shoot some videos. Many of the cameras I have looked at either a little large or tiny cubes like sq12 that are junk. It looks like a good deal, that will fit in the body and not affect the center of gravity to much. Thanks!!!
Great video! Like this cam!
Got the runcam 5(black) consider to buy this!
I bought this a week ago for using on my model railway. EIS ON is perfect for this application as the narrower the FOV the better. And EIS fixes the wobble you get from having it mounted to a carriage running on railway tracks
Does it have autofocus, or at least any way to adjust the focus? Can't find info about that anywhere
Great review Joshua thank you for the honest review!!
I'm old , cant see much a difference except for picture size. may get a run cam 5 when my Kokad cube or mobius burns out.
Thanks Josh, good video
I just put one of these on one of my 6 inch builds. It seems pretty nice, actually. The best part to me is that it is only 56 grams and fits Session mounts.
Thanks for another great video!
Fantastic flying and review, Joshua! 😃
Personally I liked the Foxeer Box 2 a lot... More than the RunCam 5 (black)... Because it's easier to replace the front glass and so on, but... Now? I really don't know. 😬
(I didn't buy any of them yet...)
Great mine just came in the mail today.
Battery is user replaceable. 2P1s for micro quads will do it or use the battery space for voltage regulator and make external power connector to hook with main battery.
Looks like the next camera I purchase. I have a back-log of cameras right now because I had to try the Box2 and the Black RunCam5 and I still have three GoPros running good. I wanted the other cameras to help prolong the life of the GoPros...And I can say I been using the Box2 on 1440p @60fps 90 percent of the time. I just have to run around watching battery levels on cameras I'm not using as much. The batteries is what always gos. My new Rooster build will only carry the Hero 5's and the RunCams. But I have a Box2 mount for my ZMR 250.
Hi Joshua! Love your vids and the amount of informations contained in them. I recently found a pretty interesting camera that is a split style camera with 4k30 recording capability (hawkeye firefly split). I would like to know what you think about it as to me it seems like a gutted gopro that you can check the framing from the goggles! (With secondary cam input as i heard the latency is not that great)
Great video, a pleasant learning experience and very informative. I'm fairly certain that I've made the right choice... thank you.
Good video, bro.
I’m torn between the foxxer box and the RunCam 5 Orange. Never been a big fan of the GoPros because of price and weight. I’ve liked the underdogs devices.
I still have the RunCam 2 Orange and would like to upgrade to the 5 Orange.
i recently got a hero 8 but i still love my runcam 5 black! been to hell and back and still great!
Joshua as always good! Very complete video but in conclusion which is the best setting for you? Eis no right? And what do you think of the XV format?
After watching other comparison reviews, I was about to buy the Caddix Orca but thought I would wait for JB's definitive review, guess I'll have to wait now :(
can still get session 5s on ebay and the likes so until then ill stick to go pro but they wont last forever so pretty happy that the box cams are getting to a gopro like level. its all good news for yhe hobby.
I bought the RunCam5 Black back when it first came out last July and I love it, although I sprayed it pink so I could find it if it ejected (I happened to have bright pink spray paint at the time) :)
I was looking at the various Session style cameras that were available at the time and I chose the RunCam primarily because it had acceptable image quality for $100 and it was only 55 g. I had been flying with an older GoPro that was like 150 g. I've beat this RunCam up quite a few times, including ripping my mount off twice; once while racing and once freestylin, and have had zero issues with it. I'm not really a UA-camr, so I don't really need a pristine picture. I'd love to have the picture quality of the GoPro, but not at that price point, and not with 130 g. If I do break it, or lose it, I'm only out $100 also. This is the perfect camera for me.
Not "what's the best camera I can afford?" really, more like "What's the best camera I can afford to smash because I know damn well that I will be smashing it?"
thx for another cool review. Iknow there a lot of option for setting than a dji air unit, but will it be a big difference on 1080?
Great review!!! You will choose this cam over the caddx orca???
(I'm planing to cinematic and 4k photos).
Thank you in advance.
could we get google drive links to the raw footage maybe? I think it would help judge without youtubes compression
Muchas gracias
Any thought on filters? Thanks for a great vid!
I wait to see before buy if you do test of Orca cam !
So Mr. Bardwell, any further thoughts on the image stabilisation feature now they've made a couple of rounds of updates and apparently increased the FOV in stabilised mode substantially?
Well I bought one with your link. Today was the first time I used it on my RC crawler. I used the default settings and it worked awesome. I do need to mount it better, there was quite a bit of vibration, however the quality of picture was outstanding. I'm going to play with it and dial in the setting that works best for my application. Thank you for your info and input on your assessment of this camera it was very helpful on my decision. Do you have any recommendations for RC rock crawling settings? I subbed!! Thanks Josh
i have one and im loving it... crash tested and approved also lol cant use crap sd cards at all just a heads up it just wont start recording at all or even be seen by windows when you plug it up to pc to read a card thats low end quality
Thanks!
Is that besieged? I heard they finally released that. Used to play that years ago
I love my RC5 Orange. Super light at 56g also
Balance quality price i think is a good inversement . thank for your ob Joshua appreciate
I love & respect Bardwell, I even love his flight controller as well, as a Video guy I just want to make a minor correction to a statement, Shutter speed has to to with motion blur, Higher shutter stops motion, lower increases motion blur, mind you the lower the shutter the more light your allowing into the sensor which then you'll need an ND filter to maintain proper exposure values. Iso is literally artificial lighting to the sensor
Love it! Pretty impressed. Wondering if you’ve tried The Xiaomi Yi? I heard it’s the same sensor as one of the go pros and there’s a firmware hack for it but it’s a few years old now
I flew with the yi and the firmwares with superview etc. Image quality was impressive but its so fragile.
Great Joshua, thank you!
You just convinced me to buy it, since here in EU I cannot find anything better than this :) for that money I mean
My Runcam5 orange has ben delivered just today! and in the box there is also a spare battery, but it seems to be for the runcam2! :D Don't ask me why!
Thanks
Great reviwed just what i was looking for because i am undescided between a mobius mini and a runcam 2. I do not fly FPV, just small 1000mm slow airplanes, I am not a blogger just want some clips for one or two videos in youtube or personal videos to enjoy.
My planes are between 150grams to 400 grams.
Do you have a comment on why Mobius mini (27grams)is not an good option and why a runcam 5 (59grms) may be better option than a runcam 2?
I hope you can comment.
Thanks for sharing!!
Omg I got my first orange cube last week at 175.oo Canadian funds ( yes we get beat over here . But I'm am blown away with image ! Also blows my mind is how solid it is internally . Horrific crashes through trees while surfing the 200 tall canopys . oops i hit dissarm switch missile strikes into rock hard plowed fields lol fml . So I'm very pleased ! I know RC is working on a digital fpv system ..I just feel it in my bones ! Why not eh !?
I wish you could test these cam on slower drone . Anyway i sure learn a lot about R5s today . Thanks !!!
I just bought it based on this video :) thanks
i have this cam i have put this cam in lots crashes and it even went for a swim in the pond it was full of water and i dryed it out disconnected the neg wire from the battery for it to reset waited a day and reconnected the neg wire after it dryed out from a fan being on it then it worked again so i would say this cam is ruff and tuff if you can`t get any thing else i`d buy it again
Cool vid. Tell us what we need to know. Ty.
Nice video bro! and hey! am Joshua too haha
Besiege! Love this game :D
Isn`t the distortion (tree) because of rolling shutter?
i wish i had the orange but i only have the black. but i am noticing the sound is still garbage. something i did to get rid of the blown out sound is to open the cam and put a small piece of electrical tape over the mic. you can NOT talk/vlog to it. but it helps the quads in flight sound.
Hi Joshua
Please make a comparison with caddx orca
I'm thoroughly please with purchasing this camera.
Thanks mate, you have sold me! Finally going to stop posting dvr!😂👊👊👍👍
Great video. I was told that a session mount would work but I found it doesn't. Do you know where I can get a case that has a Gopro style mount?
you should review the rx0 mkii for fvp, think it's a real interesting camera since the sensor is soo much bigger. and the housing is metal
Thanks for a great review, now I can afford a camera since their are no BB's near me.
I am happy with the picture quality compared to a session 5. The sound however.. it really sounds like crap compared to a session 5. If they could fix the sound I would buy one!
I don't understand the statement about no way to check frame? I am understanding that there is a cable included which allows both external battery but also low latency TV output. Can you confirm this?
Looks like i will enjoy my purchase
Actually I prefer the desaturated flat look. I use presets in Lightroom that desaturate my pictures normally anyway because that's the look I like.
I picked up the Runcam 5 Orange a few days ago, and I'm noticing a bad problem with color banding. Primarily, it's the blue of the sky that's displaying the greatest amount of banding. Did you have this problem as well, or rather do you know how to fix it? I really want to love this camera, but the color banding issue is killing me.
Would like to see some post-processed footage of the RC5 just to see how it stands up against edited GoPro footage. Perhaps the RC5's flaws can be addressed in post...
I was thinking that too. Run the raw video thru reel steady and clean it up it post. Would love to see the results.
@@kelinryan8222 can you use reelsteady go or do you need the $400 version?
@@exshenanigan2333 I'm not sure honestly I've just started playing around with video myself.
@@kelinryan8222 probably you'll need the $400 version then. which makes it a little bit of a steep purchase, you might be better of spending the $400 on a GoPro with Hypersmooth and buy the Best Buy warranty, if you're in US that is.
it looks pretty good with a bit of editing ua-cam.com/video/jCMsK5F6zE0/v-deo.html
I sent mine back. Tried 2 brand new Sandisk 64GB U3 Extreme cards, in various formats (Fat32 and exFat), and it would act like it was recording but rarely a file was found once I stopped the recording. Very bummed. I tried all sorts of combinations and it never completely worked.
thanks for the review Joshua, a lot of work on that editing. I'm totally fine with the image quality of the runcam, at this point the main thing that differentiates the runcam from the session 5 is the field of view and the superview. This has to be improved in order to close the gap to gopro. At least increase the field of view if the superview is "not allowed". If they can match the fov then it will finally be an acceptable gopro replacement
They'll never be able to match SuperView, that's a patented feature of the GoPro. You can, however, add it in post.
@@SirFrag32 Thanks, i know they can't do superview, i mentioned it, but the field of view can technically be increased, thats something else which is not patented. Narrow fov on freestyle footage looks really bad imo, the wider the better
Literally i was watching a runcam 5 orange video when this came up
When I see rolling shutter in an action cam its a no go for me. Maybe the Runcam 6 Pink will solve that issue.
The runcam 5 orange or the foxeer box 2? Or maybe the orca from Caddx?
What do you guys think?
I hope the tv out latency is not too bad. I heard that runcam 2's tv out is better than almost every other stabilized camera in the market.
I was really happy when this camera came out, because I have a bunch of 3d print mount designs all based on the 3. And when they discontinued that one I was bummed as all that work went out the window. So this one is essentially the same size as the 3, maybe 1mm less in depth. Have you ever looked at the foxeer 4k? Just wondering how it compares...
He did a comparison of Foxer with the previous Runcam 5
Not sure the camera is recording in hi bitrate..Also, use manual focus when recording your episode... cause you're out of focus but the back ground is in focus.
I'd like to thank for a non-related thing. Publishing the video with the crashes. It makes me feel much less crappy when I fly - I simply crash around 30-50% of the time. I considered myself to be lame (which I still am), but realizing a pro still crashes makes me feel a little bit better :)
Everybody crashes. Some people just don't show their crashes.
How does this one compare to the Foxeer Box2? Its the same price with identical features. IMHO that would be a better comparison then a session5 even
How did you stretch the 4/3 1440? I’m looking at getting this for my quad cause I just broke my session
So how much better is this compared to DJI’s onboard recording?
How does this stack up with the Runcam 2 4K? They both seem very similar in specs and price.
Thanks for this video - this is super helpful!
Does the Distorsion correction have an effect on 1080xv? I am too lazy for rendering everthing twice for dynamic stretching ;)
Looks like there's a 4k xv now, do you think it's any better than 1440p stretched in post? More detailed image possibly? Or worse?
I dont want to color grade just best out the cam settings do you got a qr code for that??? YT is messing up my footy ;( so upload in 2.7 does that mean 2.7 on camera settings? 1080/60 looked the best in your test
I see that runcam 5 orange has some firmware updates, the latest being V1.2.2. Do you know what firmware version you were running when you made this video? I see one fix is a larger FOV, I wonder if they fixed the weird glitching when using EIS.
Well now that GoPro has completely removed any ability to work with ProTune via the app, and ProTune no longer being available via my Hero5 Session's menu after updating to the newest firmware, this Runcam thingy is lookin pretty damn sweet! The only video settings I can modify now on my Session are resolution, framerate and field of view. I cannot begin tell you how frustrated I have been with my Session's fixed image settings, so I'm hoping this Runcam can alleviate some of that rage :)
