I mounted mine on a slip ring assembly, which allows continuous 360 degree rotation on my FX61. THE video results are great.
We just bought this camera and tested it today on one of our RC planes. It worked great and gave us our first 3 videos of us flying an RC plane. Really highly recommended, the runcam2 4K, we are very happy!

Looks pretty good, but the saturation appears a little high. Sure would make for some good model in flight video. I can imagine some super strong double sided tape attaching the camera to a money clip for use on a baseball hat. That is assuming I remember to wear some old sunglasses with one lens with a short tube to help me keep my eye on the target with less distraction. Sort of like the idea behind one eye having a special tactical lens for targeting, but on the cheap.
You have best advice on RC cams, Just ordered one. Still using the FlyerFly 8SE too, great cam.

Another great video Mr. Newton! I have a black and orange regular version of this Runcam. I will have to purchase this 4K one sometime. Oh and at time stamp 10:48 you took a picture of a flowered bush and I thought that was awesome because here in New Bern, North Carolina, USA we have the same one growing at my parents house next to their front porch and has been there growing for almost 50 years!! My dad has always kept it pruned well over the years but anyways, I just thought that was cool. Keep up the awesome work!!

Andrew, thanks for helping me out with setting up my FPV gear. This camera works fantastic as both FPV and HD camera on my glider. No need for a second FPV camera at this point on any of my gliders or wings.

Good camera with one problem. THE SOUND IS AT A LOW LEVEL. WHY DON'T THEY FIX THIS? IF I WANTED THE SOUND TO BE QUIET, I WOULD TURN IT UP MYSELF.

I have the RunCam2 and have loved it, - 4K would be great, however the 4K has no stabilization same as the 2, and it shows a lot on smaller wingspan planes.
I tried buying a Hero7Black and it failed out-of -the box, a feature I was taken aback by and so I haven't tried another, but at $500 bucks a shot to try one, I am in two minds whether to even give it another go.
At that point it might just be you flying to unstable ! Maybe try slowing it down and doing some scale slow speed passes and see what the video looks like
I was a little bit frustrated with mine at first because the camera always stopped in flight all the time. I later on figured out that its the internal battery that loses connection due to vibration and then turn the camera off. After I started powering the camera straight from my drone battery that that problem disappeared. I like the camera because its light enough to strap it to the belly of my analog Flywoo Explorer and still capture some good video. Some examples shown on my channel.
Good fault finding. SD cards can cause problems too. Need a Samsung EVO U3

The camera is great but still lacks stabilization!
Can you cast it to a phone without it cutting out so you can control it while watching it through the phone?

Yes, perfect for that but there is no image stabilisation
Regarding the FPV feed - in FW1.1.6 it's always in NTSC mode, despite the setting. There is now FW1.2.0 where you can actually switch to PAL - but then the feed is at such low framerate that it's unusable. That's only a problem for OSD use, I suppose, because you get fewer lines for OSD in NTSC vs PAL. Also when you switch to Picture mode, FPV feed goes down to like 15PFS until you take the first picture, then it goes up a bit but still is less than in video mode. So if you intend to remotely take pictures rather than videos while flying it through TV-Out, this camera might not be the best for that. The old PWM remote control cable for RunCam2 also works with this version. Too bad it's discontinued.

Format the card in exFAT instead of Fat32 so you can get continues filming beyond 4GB files.
The 4GB limit is a filesystem limit of Fat32 that exFAT doesn't have.
How is the battery life?
Sadly that doesn't change the 10min / 4GB recording limit.

Right after the word IMPORTANT in my video description, and on the Runcam website. There is only one SD card that works perfectly I have found.

Floaty, yet very stable and will be my FPV plat form.
So if I'm understanding the use of this camera correctly.....
I'm able to see through my goggles with this camera and record on my goggles?
And also be able to get high-quality definition recording with the camera to the HD card inside the camera?
I believe the camera has a card too, correct?

Yes it's a decent FPV and 4k recording camera. But you should remove the battery, connect to a VTx using the supplied USB cable, power the camera with 5V and only use the recommended SD card
I thought the fpv feed was okay TBH, I would have it pointed down a little more myself.
What voltage range does it use once you remove the lipo?

Oh nice/finally. Audio has always been the 1 area the previous version failed at.
My original Runcam2 had no audio for some reason. The 4K version is better but not up to normal action cam audio levels.
Is this compatible with an iPhone, and if so, will the format be similar to what I'm seeing in this video. Also, are there any kind of written instructions on how to understand the different settings instead of just picking around and guessing. Let me know please. THANKS

Nice review. Do you always tape your Runcam to the plane? Is there a chance that it damages the foam when removed?
I do, and it does leave a mark. Removes any paint as well.
What do I need to connect crossfire receiver to zohd kopilot fly stabilizer board .I’m ordered the sonic ar wing classic
5 PWM channels or SBUS from the receiver. No idea if crossfire does that.

I was trying to decide if i should buy RunCam 2 or RunCam 2 4K, was curious if 4K cam have FOV control too, and yes you showed that it have :) but i didn't notice it in options when you were using menu on TV out instead of smartphone. So FOV option is available only in smartphone app or it's still available in TV out menu too?
I assume it's both but I'll have to check.

I've loved my Mobius for years - it has a good weather proof cover. Does the RunCam have a water proof cover for it?

How war is the distance for a still having a good signal ?
Wifi signal is only for setup. Only good for a few meters. FPV signal with the VTx I used here is good for 1 to 3km depending on RF noise in the area.

Down by the sea side park can you take some more video with more people around, better on distance viewing and closer.
I really wish they would come out with a set of ND filters for it. There are one or two filter holders for it on Thingiverse, but its impossible to find the exact model of filter that fits the printed holders.

I've always used the Mobius but perhaps I need to try one of these? I've changed the battery on the Mobius by the way, they do just plug in.

Can't you just used the wifi to mirror what the camera See's through the app? Or do you have to still connect the fpv antenna? I'm so confused
Wifi range is only a few meters. So if you want more range then you do need a video transmitter.
@@AndrewNewton It would be nice if you make a video testing the range of the action camera using the wifi vs fpv. The purpose of this is that I would like to mount the camera on a rc 🚙 since you get a very clear view from Wi-Fi
Andrew, how do you get the camera to go into record mode using the FC. If one press of the button turns it on, and a second press of the button puts it in HD recording mode, how do you do that through the Flight Controller? I'm using a Matek F722 Wing FC. Thanks.
The manual shows how with Betaflight, but I have not tried with INAV

Actually if you compare the same areal of the image both cameras are equal but the RunCam 4K has more distortion.

I need your help. I received my RunCam 2 4k along with an FPV, RC832 and TS832 and my plan is to use them with my x380 drone . How did you connect your RunCam to the FPV? Do you have a video for that? My package is missing those little plastic connectors. What are they called and where to get them. Any video that might help will be appreciated

Would be OK. Do you want a live feed back to the cabin or just recording? External power and a video transmitter would be needed if you want a live feed back to a screen

OSD comes from an OSD chip on a flight control board

No interval photos unfortunately, just count down. Stills are same res as video 4K. I'll share some full res images soon and let you know

@@AndrewNewton Many thanks Andrew, maybe an interval timer will come in a future firmware update. The pictures seem pretty good, I guess you could extract say every 30th picture from a 4k video to get one picture a second. I also see some barrel distortion at the edges.
Is there away I can keep the runcam wifi ON and still view something on the fpv other than black screen with message "wifi ON"

I have not tried this, but might be possible using the white remote control wires from 2 runcams connected to a Betaflight board. Recording can then be controlled with your rc transmitter. Shows how in the manual.

That's the file size limit (8 min = 4GB) for 4k video and FAT32 formatted SD cards. GoPro does the same.

90º lens is better for a hatcam.
How does the photo mode operate?
Change to Photo mode using the Wifi button, and push the shutter button to take photos
My Runcam 2 4K is flikering in all resulutions. Just in 4K no flikering. Is this normal?
Most likely SD card. I switched to Samsung EVO U3

I usually just tape it on for a quick flight, or use ID card or 3D printed mounts. I have done videos on camera mounts.

Velcro can be a bit wobbly, but OK if you add a strap over the top

Great review and content in this video. Would there be a way to get realtime FPV stabilized video using this camera (maybe in combination with some other "component".) If not are there any small camera systems like this that do offer real time image stabilization back to the pilot. I have a Parrot Disco and their CHUCK Control unit provided beautiful stabilized images for the FPV and even included the ability to pan the image up and down and side to side without requiring a gimbal or servo of any type. Just wondering if there is another system that exists today that could be used to do something similar from a camera perspective...obviously the camera would need to be combined with a flight controller to get you CHUCK like functionality.
I have made simple roll axis servo gimbals for these cameras, but the RC2 4K doesn't have built in stabilisation. GoPros do a great job by themselves.
@@AndrewNewton Thanks for the reply. I'm looking for something that will provide both a stabilized video feed (FPV) and also act as the recording video. Prefer not to have to use 2 cameras. I'm guessing that there is nothing out there that can do both..ala the Parrot Disco and that is shocking to me X years after the Parrot Disco.

No stabilisation unfortunately
Compared to the RUNCAM 2 the RunCam 4K spreads the more pixel only over the wider angel. It is quite useless if you use the camera to follow other planes.
Hi Andrew, quick question to you and anyone reading this please, what is the best way to make the prop look better when filming if it is unavoidable to have the prop in view. I have a runcam 2 also a runcam 2 4k. Many thanks
Never thought about it really. Maybe with an ND filter over the lens to force a slower shutter speed.

No, at least it doesn't work with my Mac
Can you start making 4K UA-cam videos? Even if the raw footage is 1080, rendering and uploading 4K helps improve the image.

@@bravogolf5905 The runway is closed, but they use it occasionally to bring airplanes to the USAF museum. You have to be an AMA member and have base access to apply for membership.

Andrew, did you ever manage to make this camera record longer files? I am aware Fat32 file structure limitations are about 4GB. But in Exfat there shouldn't be that limitation. Mine will only record 8 to 11 minute clips only, regardless of video format selection. It is interesting that Runcam recommends to format the SD card to Fat32. Any thoughts, findings? Cheers, Stuart.

Hey Andrew great video. Mine arrived from Banggood out of focus for flying. I had to dismantle and twist the lens tube out 1/4 turn to get a sharp image at infinity. Original Runcam 2 had the same issue apparently - Troy's tube had a fix. It is good now I did this but I was not impressed. Just wondered if anyone else had this problem?
That is disappointing quality control from Runcam. I did have that problem with the old RC2 but not with any of my three RC2 4K

Hi Andrew. Enjoyed your video. Have the same issue with this cam as what you've briefly mentioned. It stops recording at about 8 minutes or just under 4gb (whichever comes first). Any idea what might be causing it? Tried different recording options, frame rates, different sd cards, formatting sd cards, updating the firmware, etc - still the same result... Thank you!
No way around it, 4Gb is a fixed limit for Runcam's choice of FAT32 SD card formatting. But it should start a new segment and keep recording.

Runcam 2 are the butt of all jokes. A camera with spare batteries that you can purchase but no dedicated external charger, except in the camera itself. How
