  • ND filters can do all sorts of things for us FPV drone flyers. They can add smooth, cinematic motion blur, get rid of jello, reduce the effect of props in view, protect your lens and allow you to lock a shutter speed. In this video I strapped 2 GoPros to a quad, one with an ND filter and one without to demonstrate via comparison exactly what ND filters do, and how we can use ND filters to make our fpv videos better.

    Great Video you didn't explain the various levels of ND filters and why. Its 2021 and the GoPro sessions are gone. Runcam 5 orange and Caddx Orca are the box cameras available these days. With the latter supposedly having a built in ND Filter

    • @MactacFPV
      @MactacFPV  3 роки тому

      Thanks! The various strengths of ND filter is a whole other video (still meaning to do it), but I have some tips here: camerabutter.com/pages/nd-filter-tips . The GoPro sessions are still very much being used (I sell a ton of Session filters still) even though they have been discontinued for some time. Neither the Runcam nor the Caddx have a built-in ND filters. That all being said, I don't only make filters for the Session - also the Hero 5,6,7,8 and 9. Plus I make Universal filters that fit in any camera mount with a 33x36 filter slot (the Black Diamond series).

    Super helpful, so what would be your rec for settings on the session (shutter speed, exposure etc.) and #ND filter for the following situation... sunny day, in and out of darker "forested" and brighter "sunlight" area's....?? I use this cam on a chest mount for MTB video, always looking for tips and tricks to get better quality...

    • @MactacFPV
      @MactacFPV  3 роки тому

      If I'm doing a sunny day an d stay in the sun, I use ND16, lock ISO to 100, and set the shutter so it looks properly exposed on the preview on your phone. If you are goin in & out of darker areas, use ND8 (or even 4 or no ND if it's really dark) and set shutter to auto. ISO max mode to 400 or 800. Unfortunately by setting auto shutter, your amount of motion blur will keep changing (it's dependent on the shutter speed), but the session doesn't have a lot of dynamic range, so if it gets too dark, you won't be able to boost it later without totally destroying the image. LMK if you have any questions, as we can go as deep as you want :)

    Really good stuff! I just tested my ND32 & 64 filters today. I look forward to your upcoming settings video because I'm not sure what to set the shutter speed to. I've heard 1/double your frame rate, but then it seems like I've also heard different & maybe that's for mad freestyler pro' style. I'm long range guy trying to incorporate some basic freestyle in my mountain surfing. Plus most of my major objectives are for freshly snow covered mountains with sun. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @MactacFPV
      @MactacFPV  4 роки тому

      Expose for the snow - it's the hardest thing to get right. This might mean that everything else is just a little bit dark, but you can always crank up the exposure in post. 1/double the frame rate is good for the right amount of motion blur if that's what you're going for. Possibly different settings if you are trying to get rid of jello or props, you might need less ND. Really, just experiment to see what effect you like most. Just be careful if you are using hypersmooth on a Hero 7... if you have lots of vibration, hypersmooth does some weird stuff, and that gets amplified with an ND filter

      H8 and H9 are fine with hypersmooth and ND filters. It was the early firmware on the H7 that had the problem, but it's been updated. If you are using Reelsteady Go, it's not a problem at all (it uses the gyro to stabilize). I use ND filters on 95% of my videos. Here's a H8 with an ND16 and hypersmooth: ua-cam.com/video/Kq5JDm9iIVU/v-deo.html

      Amazing footage !! :)
      I saw in reviews of gp 8 and of 9 that this problem exists.
      perhaps they firmware fixed it, or perhaps it's not a problem when flying fpv... as all the demonstrations of this were with nd filters and low shutterspeeds while people were walking or running with lots of bouncing around.
      here's a timestamp of a hero 9 review demoing it ua-cam.com/video/BFYt6PtyDyw/v-deo.html

    • @MactacFPV
      @MactacFPV  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, it was 2k7 30fps. Probably around 1/60 shutter speed depending on the light. No, you don't raise ISO, as that degrades the image, and defeats the purpose of the ND filter, which is to be able to use a slower shutter speed.
