  • In this video I build from scratch a high efficiency propane forge from an air tank. This is a "real" forge that is capable of welding temperatures.
    It has a removable front so the forge chamber can be serviced and repaired.
    Here is how to make the forge burner used in this video:
    • How to Build a Propane...
    • Propane Forge Burner F...
    or here is another burner design that works very well
    • Propane Forge Burner O...
    and
    If you don't have the money to spend on a full forge here is a small coffee can forge that can be make from stuff from the hardware store:
    • How to Make a Coffee C...
    Materials List:
    Airtank or freon tank or propane tank or steel tube (for the container), at least 10" wide
    Kaowool (ceramic blanket)
    Kaowool board
    Firebricks
    ITC-100 refractory or some other type of brush-able refractory.
    High heat stove cement
    High heat BBQ paint
    Steel tube or iron pipe fitting sized for the propane burner
    Piece of 14 gauge or similar thickness sheet steel
    Piece of 1/8" x 3/4" steel flat stock
    Piece of 1" steel square tubing
    2" x 10-32 bolts
    3/4" coarse thread screws

    Absolutely right - cold water not hot. Saw a guy on a construction site 30 or 40 years ago rip off a great lump of this as emergency toilet paper - no one said a word of warning to him and we wept with laughter for the rest of the day. He got his own back a few days later by sprinkling some in all the wellington boots - fair play

    To help minimize itching you can rub baby powder on your exposed skin to help prevent ceramic fibers from sticking to your skin. Also works great for fiberglass.

    HAHAHAHA you used a pot to mark the circumference! +1 and subbed. I feel more normal now. I have a jar full of coins from different countries... which I use to mark varying curves on knife blanks....and today I used a sticker from a knife supplier to make cut points in a micro furnace. Love your skills, glad im not the only person out there using random stuff to make things work.

    I just made the smaller version following your other video with the coffee can forge video, did not change anything at all, well , except the broom handle, lol, I just used a one inch OD metal tube , if I ever need to make a bigger forge, for sure I'll copy this blue one. both designs are simple and you made both very interesting to watch/understand, great editing also, what I like the best is, you go straight to the point, no fluff, very concise and every minute of it has lots of information . two thumbs up .

    I also got a good deal on a new 7 Gallon airtank. I stripped the red paint and then I cut both ends off and cut two smaller Rectangle doors out of both of the ends and Pop riveted larger hinges for the larger end pieces and smaller hinges for the smaller rectangle doors for the forging. I did this in case I ever needed to replace the Kaowool and Firebricks. I also have Rigidizer and refractory cement to fill around any exposed kaowool. Also used a piece of black pipe cut short in two pieces and rounded to tap thumbscrew holes to hold my hand built double Venturi burners. Which I’m welding on. I also added an extra valve for when I don’t need both burners. I also tapped the existing bottom bracket and welded on a second and tapped it out. Then I took a large heavy cart and filled the top with kiln bricks while having four large bolts protruding up between to mount it through the bracket holes I tapped out on the forge brackets. I also added latches to the larger doors and smaller doors for traveling with it. My only issue is I was supposed to have locking wheels on the cart, but that’s a problem for another day. I’m ordering some 1000 degree paint

    Great build and I am looking to do something very similar with an nearly if not identical tank. Knowing what O2 can do with a little bit of a spark, I have been cautious to get started. How did you ensure your tank was empty prior to cutting into it? I have found some info for other gas bottles but since you had worked with something so similar thought I could get your take. Thanks!!

      Check on line for Satanite it's a high temperature refractory you can use to seal the kao-wool it's relatively cheap and will greatly improve the efficiency of your forge. Also check for furnace repair places or plumbing stores sometimes the have ceramic insulation and sometimes you can get scraps for free like boxes of them.

    Awesome video!! I think I would have gone with the hinged door or at the very least used the cut off end you had for the door and slid that on and off instead of cutting then filling in big thru holes on both ends. Just seems like less work in the long run.
    How did the original blue paint hold up? All the other forge videos they seem to spend a lot of time grinding off the old paint and repainting them with stove paint. If that whole process can be skipped then that alone makes this video worth watching. Great job!!

      Thanks, I'm assuming you mean a weed burner? Probably not as the orfice would be so close to the inside of the forge you might have problems with the propane mixing with air properly. • @ohhaiderhowisyou
      @ohhaiderhowisyou 7 років тому +1

      The plaster of paris and sand refractory doesn't hold heat very well, and is very fragile. By using ceramic wool, which already has a heat resistance of 2300 give or take, and adding ITC 100, which will help the forge keep heat very efficiently, he has made a more durable, and more efficient lining that he shouldn't have to replace very often. You would replace the plaster of paris and sand lining much much sooner than this, and it's just not near as good.

      Anthony Henderson I just built one...$10 scrap yard tank, $30 parts for reil burner, $30 high psi regulator and 5ft hose, $80 8ft2 of ceramic wool, $200 welder.....i didn't bother with the fancy door but i did put in a "floating" piece of ceramic wool in the main opening cutting the main opening down to 6 square inches...i have fire brick extending out 4 inches upon which u can lay a small brick to block the opening...i didn't bother with the ICT 100....my burner is angled directly at the fire brick and the wool doesn't burn unless directly exposed to the flame...i did not install a pass thru as the tank is 18" deep and I'm not planning on making any swords...........yet ;)

    • @michaelcalkins8079
      @michaelcalkins8079 7 років тому

      I think forcing air dose create more heat. Air being a fuel. Almost like the concept behind forced induction in a motor. Turbos and superchargers.

    • @alanbuban9020
      @alanbuban9020 5 років тому +1

      That is a reason I went with a forced air design. If you look closely at the first part of the video you will see yellow flame coming out the front door. This indicates a lack of fuel or oxygen mixture into the gas for efficient burning. If you use a blower and a static air mixer it provides for a better mixture of air and propane fuel and burns more of a blue flame which indicates both a 'hotter' fire and more efficient use of your fuel...

    Andrew, watching this gives me a wacky idea: Could you build a forge from just a roll of that insulator stuff, with a space left in the middle, painted inside and out with the stabilizer mud? Then you'd poke a hole through the wooly stuff for the burner. In other words, could you do without the metal shell?

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  7 років тому +3

      It might be possible but I think it would collapse, the metal isn't really there for insulation, just as structure. Wacky ideas is where great ideas start!

      @pxjones63 7 років тому

      Yes, it's possible for very temporary setups. I used to do something very similar to that when welding forging die blocks for industrial forging drop hammers. You had to preheat the dies to 400+ degrees, and keep them at that temperature until you were done working on them. I'd wrap the dies in the ceramic woll to keep the heat in, and used a small gas burner to keep them hot. There times i heated portions to a dull cherry red, and I'm sure I could have taken it higher, but it was already too hot at that point.

    Good job!! I'm impressed. Would it be a big deal to install a small piezoelectric lighter near the nozzle of the burner, so you could neatly light it up with the push of a button?

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  7 років тому +2

      You could add it to the inside of the burner or light it at the intake, the pressure should force the flame to the end of the nozzle in the forge and burn there, I have seen other people light their forges that way but to be honest it scares me. I don't think the if you install the lighter inside the forge it was survive the intense heat. In one of my other videos where I make a propane jet burner, I use a universal BBQ ignition system, it could be adapted here for sure.

      David Martin for the propane burner I would recommend the vide titled "TurnerForge- How to make an efficient propane burner" For the forge I recommend the video "My Custom Blacksmith Propane Forge Build - Start to Finish" by the UA-camr Makin Sumthin From Nuthin. Depending on the length of the tank you might need two burners. I'm a blacksmith and mine forge needs to be able to forge weld so I would use two burners but one would most likely be okay.

    do I need a hole on both ends of the forge or just one

    • @lol49031
      @lol49031 7 років тому

      depends on whether you want to be able to forge unlimited stock length(as in part of it at a time)

      also probably helps reduce the amount of hot gas going towards you

    Is it really neccesary to have a removable front?

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  7 років тому

      It's not but it's really hard to build the forge without a removable opening and it allows for ease of maintenance.

    over here it is liquid petroleum gas which is a mixture of propane butane and natural Gass.

    it appears that your burner is pulsing. you either need more gas or less air, but that would compromise the flame profile. I don't understand why everyone uses a burner design like this. compressed air siphon nozzle works soooo much better and gets soooo much hotter. it also gives you the option if using different fuels like diesel or waste oil or if you have mosquitoes you can use tiki torch fuel! that's what I run 8n my foundry and I can make 2000 degrees all day long no problem. just my 2 cents

    I use a old coal forge but for travel this would be a great thing to have. I don't think torch be too hard to fabricate

    How much did this all cost to make the forge

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  7 років тому

      Under 200 dollars Canadian but most of the cost is for the wool and ITC-100 and but have enough left over ITC-100 to make 2 more forges.

    • @Craz3dApprentice
      @Craz3dApprentice 7 років тому

      Andrew W how much ITC 100 did you use? 1/4 pint? 1/2 pint?

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  7 років тому +1

      I think in raw ITC-100 before mixing with water around 1/4 pint.

    So I am curious why you went through the trouble and expense of using ceramic blanket Board when plaster and sand worked well the last time for a simple forge. Sorry if I sound naive for not knowing particulars. The video is great and I love how you take the time to explain what you are doing.

    I'm not a safety patrol, but that "wet saw" scared the crap out of me. Water, 120 VAC and sandals? At least make sure you are plugged into a ground fault detect circuit, so the power will be off when they come to attempt to resuscitate you. Thanks for the video. I know we are all responsible for our own safety, I just want to be sure you understand the risk you are taking. Later

    It's not a forge, it's a furnace. A 'forge' is the whole workshop and it's equipment where the blacksmith works:
    FORGE:
    NOUN
    1 A blacksmith's workshop; a smithy.
    verb (used with object), forged, forging.
    1. to form by heating and hammering; beat into shape
    FURNACE
    noun
    1. a structure or apparatus in which heat may be generated, as for heating houses, smelting ores, or producing steam.

      Merriam-Webster online defines a forge as follows: 1 - a furnace or a shop with its furnace where metal is heated and wrought. 2 - a workshop where wrought iron is produced or where iron is made malleable.
