My grandfather was a lead blacksmith for a Coal Company in Pennsylvania. I wish I could have met him I wish I could have learned some of his trade but I always enjoy a true Craftsman like yourself. How can you possibly see and envision a project so far ahead. You're a true fabricator and a true artist.
Thank you very much for this video. I am the metal shop co-ordinator for the Moss Vale Men's Shed Inc. and we have just purchased the kit to make a forge. This video is going to make our job a whole lot easier. Also I am enjoying your knife making vids too. Keep up the good work; and again, many thanks for sharing what you do!!!
JUST TO CLARIFY BECAUSE I'M GETTING SO MANY COMMENTS ABOUT IT. DO NOT GRIND A GAS BOTTLE THAT HAS HAD GAS IN IT. I PUT A CAPTION IN THE VIDEO STATING THIS WAS A NEW BOTTLE (NEVER HAD GAS IN) AND I HONESTLY CAN'T BELIEVE (OR DON'T WANT TO BELIEVE) THERE ARE PEOPLE STUPID ENOUGH TO CUT OPEN A USED GAS BOTTLE (WITHOUT PROPER STEPS)! I've always wanted to build a decent forge and I finally got around to it. There's going to be some fun times ahead, learning and making all sorts of cool things! The kit worked out awesome! It was great having everything in the kit made to fit a 9kg gas bottle. There wasn't any guess work or ordering more material than what was needed and it also has the same burner that Alec Steele uses (I believe). It's a nice bit of kit! I got the kit from GameCo Artisan Supplies. They were also very helpful in guiding me through the process of the build, answering questions along the way. www.artisansupplies.com.au/product/large-gas-forge-refractory-burner-kit/?c=22783a5940ef
Pask Makes hey Pask the Making Time Podcast is having a “no forge” forging challenge. The idea is to get people interested in the black arts. I mean Blacksmithing with just the things most people have available. Building a forge is allowed. 👊🏼
Alec's a top bloke isnt he, but check out Sam Fowler, his old mate, he has a variety of kits/parts, fully assembled forges etc for sale on forgeburners.com
This is a great video, start to finish. Thank you for taking the time to make, edit, and post all your videos. As for "stupid people", my brother is a firefighter. He responded to a garage fire where, get this, the guys working on a car used a cigarette lighter to check the fuel level in the gas tank. Hence why my brother says, nobody calls the fire department for doing something smart.
And to add one more thing. I've made a pot belly stove out of propane tank. But used a 100 gallon tank and cut it down. The wall thickness is alot thicker. It seems to me if some one would spend all the time editing you would construct something that would last. Every time you heat up and cool down you lose a little material in your cylinder. But good job with following whatever directions you were following.
I’ve been a fan of your channel for a while now and just finished watching 4-5 of your videos. I must say that you have a way of making your builds look like anyone can do it. No stress, pressure or overwhelming feelings at all!!! Thank you for sharing your builds and inspiring people the way you do!! Hope all is well now with you and community down under.!!?!!👍🏻👍🏻
Pask... You never cease to amaze me. You have grown and offered so much over the past few years. I do appreciate you. Hey don't stray too far from woodworking eh!
If you are using an old gas cylinder, after you remove the valve fill it with water, this will ensure no gas is left in the cylinder. Or you may find the next step of cutting, quite interesting . 😉
You'll be lucky if you find the next step of cutting at all. Most people who get blown up don't even have time to say "oh shit!", before they go see the big man upstairs.
So, you cut open a propane tank with a cutting torch w/out cleaning it first and you blew yourself up. Q: Is it true that when you die you see a bright light? A: if you are dumb enough to watch the explosion, Yes! Q: did you see your life flash before your eyes? A: No, but I did see pieces of the tank, my arms and the torch fly past my head!
I really dig the clever use of props and text placement for getting across build specs or techniques without using dialogue. I also really appreciate the thought you put into the”cinematography” of your camera work. Maker and film artist. Oh, and the project is super cool too!
I’m building this atm, this video is a fantastic instructional. I’d never even welded anything prior to getting a mig for Father’s Day a couple of months ago. You rock Pask!!!
Nice work, you have a lot of crazy projects that often are very time involved, but this one is relatively straight forward in comparison. When I was younger my roommate had a forge and I would melt beer cans in it while I was wasting time in the shop. Never forged anything then, but it is never too late.
Thanks, built and waiting for cement and paint to dry. Took the tank handle and welded it to the top to make a portable unit. Welded 6 tabs around the opening (pre-drilled for 1/4" self tapping screws) to make eventual rebuilding easier. Found the components easy enough to source. I had the old non-check-valve tank, purged it, then pulled the valve and inverted the tank (propane is heavier than air, natural gas is lighter than air) for several days, then additionally vented with shop air hose. Propane vaporizes at -44 degrees so there is no possibility of liquid propane once pressure is purged and outside on a sunny 50 degree day, there could be vapor remaining if left open with valve opening up. You can fill the tank with water and "float" the vapor out, or simply invert, in effect pouring out the vapor. This should take a few hours, I let mine sit for 2 days. Additionally, using a long mechanics blow-gun probe, to force the vapor out is added insurance. NOTE: the odor added to propane is a sulfur compound (ethyl mercaptan) that the human nose can detect in very small concentrations, this odor can linger long after the propane is fully dissipated. If this makes you nervous, fill tank with water and detergent and rinse before cutting.
I’ve watched this a few times now. Right at this point I’m in my shed just about to cut the holes in the forge. Came back here for references. Cheers for the video mate.
Hi Neil. I discovered your channel in the last month or so and have been binge-watching all your past videos! You are immensely talented and creative, and your channel has quickly become one of my favorites! I now view your content the same way I do Frank Howarth’s - with excited anticipation and watched without distraction. Well done sir - looking forward to many inspiring projects to come!
There's nothing like making your own tools and equipment. Yes, it can be bought for less than the cost of making it but there's no pride in that. Good job!
Nobody wants you to get hurt, that's a good thing. Cut em some slack. And just FYI I have seen new empty tanks pop when the paint residue or steel protective anti-oxident is heated and produces smoke which in turn burns. Which reminds me dad was in Japan in 45 and they had llittle gasoline so they would start it on gas then there was a wood stove mounted on the back of the bus with a 6" duct running over the roof down to the carb intake and the motors ran on smoke. The good part when they came to a hill they had to get down and push it up the hill. I just wish I had film of that. Very nice work and great attention to detail !
Nice to see the application of good safe techniques including the use of personal safety equipment. Well doe it will be good to see how well you can regulate the heat for knife making.
Thanks Robert! I believe that it's a well designed forge so hopefully it should work out well! I'm hoping to start my first knife later this week so I'll find out more then! :)
Made my own forge around 5 years ago. So much fun. I really want to see you make a power hammer. I can't figure out an affordable way to make my own, and I know someone like you could figure it out.
This guy has a power hammer build that seems easy enough and that probably costs very little (ua-cam.com/video/W_eiTSk7FrA/v-deo.html). He sells the plans on his website, but honestly, if you have a good understanding of mechanical principles and movement, you could probably build it just by watching this or the many other videos of those who have built the same machine from those plans. I personally enjoy the challenge that comes with replicating from observation. Whilst it may not be an industrial quality machine, it's enough to get you started. I haven't built it yet, but it's on my list of things to do when I have time. Regards.
Was inspired to look at your photography after seeing what a talented maker you are. My goodness, you have an eye for great shots. Some beautiful pictures of Scotland and England, really like the running river, such a well framed dynamic shot.
Greetings from northern NSW! I see the knifemaking virus has spread up to Queensland now. People like you inspire the rest of us to 'make'. Thank you for the time and effort that you put into your videos matey. I'll patreon you if I survive my car rego...
That was an excellent build. I imagine that a forge like that will have many uses, and will serve you for years to come. I can't wait to see what you will create in the future using it!
Great to see someone who does this properly. If you add a thin layer of refractory in the walls and ceiling too it will be more durable and you're safer from cancerous fibers coming loose from the blanket. What temperature did you reach in the end? Thanks for the video!

Great work matey👍🏻. I do a heap of melting in my furnace over on my channel but I’m looking at expanding into the blacksmithing stuff making knives and stuff so this gives me good ideas on Forge designs 👏🏻😁thanks mate great vid. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
when you have use a hole saw put a couple small hole on the perimeter of the cut so material can fall through this will extend the life of your hole saw by quiet a bit.
I like the propane tank because of it being cheap! But I am a welder in the pipefitters Union, and I am looking at doing this with pipe, standard wall any where from 12"-20" in diameter, with a welded cap on one side and 1/4" - 1/2"plate on the front side. Thanks for sharing have a blessed week
Nice custom build ! Don't listen to the haters, they only hate what they don't understand. The likes is all that matters. Being machanically inclined with creativity and an ocd of protectionist is a passion meny just don't have. I liked it !
it is amlost certain to explode, if you use an old tank and do not wash it out. Flush out old tanks with water. Fill them up 2 or 3 times before cutting them.
This was badass I really enjoyed the process of creating this forge and watching the skill involved your a surgeon with the precision of yer cuts with that grinder and yer welds were quick and efficient Thanks for sharing this, Good Day to you sir!!!!!
I had to watch this. That thumbnail was too compelling not to. I have a forge but heck. Maybe I need another. 😁. I really liked the way this one worked out.
About to make one of these. but from a fabricator of nearly 30 years I'm sure it's been said already but do all your paint removal and marking out before you cut the ring off the bottom and do all your rolling, welding and grinding before you cast the refractory floor inside and don't use gal material near heat
I used that exact kit from Gameco. I found the lack of any instructions alarming, especially for the burners. I honestly had fear starting them up because I had no idea whether I had them set up right or not.
I found them very helpful and answered a few questions I had, you should've got in touch with them if you were unsure and they would have put you right! Hopefully you set it up right and you're having fun with it! I'm hopefully going to start on my first knife later this week! :)
Pask Makes I got in touch and they literally sent me links to 2 videos that Corin has on UA-cam where he makes a forge using similar stuff and one where he talks about the burners. Neither answered the questions that I had asked. I’ve got it to the point of firing up and have lit the burners outside of the forge but I’m not 100% confident that I’m not going to kill myself using burners that I’ve got no instructions on and have no idea what’s high/low airflow and the regulator that came with the burners seems to spin freely so I don’t know if that is on/off or whatever either. I’ve bought a lot of things from them over the past few years and my only issue with them as a company is that there’s never instructions included for anything they sell.
Looks good, the one suggestion I would make is also to coat the rest of the inside with refractory, both for heat retention, and to give your Kaowool more life. Rigidizer is good, but over time it will still spall just from the action of the Jet. Also, if you have a ceramics supply they make sacrifical kiln floors that will also increase the life of your castable. if you use any kind of flux it will eat the floor like acid
This is by far the best propane build Ive ever seen. Very good attention to detail, very well insulted. It's better then a store bought. Very nice my friend!! Great work!
I disagree. I didnt hear him insult it even once. It came out really nice, though. Is the wool more insulating than cement, or is it just easier to work with?
My grandfather was a lead blacksmith for a Coal Company in Pennsylvania. I wish I could have met him I wish I could have learned some of his trade but I always enjoy a true Craftsman like yourself. very elegant. love how it's not unnecessarily overbuilt and therefore not stupidly resource wasteful. other builders take note.

Dokładnie tak.
It will become what is known as an open furnace
This video is like the movie Patton for me. Every time it comes up on my feed...I have to watch it. That is just too cool
I have no intention of ever making this, but WOW, excellent video! Beautifully made. Very slick.
Ah good ol slick Rick
I really dig the clever use of props and text placement for getting across build specs or techniques without using dialogue. I also really appreciate the thought you put into the”cinematography” of your camera work. Maker and film artist.
Oh, and the project is super cool too!
Honestly, one of the nicest little, low budget forge builds I've seen so far. Glad you actually made an effort to contain that Kao Wool. Well done!
I’m building this atm, this video is a fantastic instructional. I’d never even welded anything prior to getting a mig for Father’s Day a couple of months ago. You rock Pask!!!
Great design and workmanship. Bravo..

Dang it Bobby! Propane and propane accessories.
Thanks, built and waiting for cement and paint to dry. Took the tank handle and welded it to the top to make a portable unit. Nice forge cobber. Love how you have gone with an Aussie designed torch. Beets my brick and charcoal in the ground. Can't wait to see what you make
Thanks very much mate - glad you like it! :)

Indeed!
Nice
Absolutely awesome. Not only the project itself, but the video too.

Human ingenuity, where there is a will, there is a way. Bravo.
Now that’s what I call a piggy forge!😉setting the tank down and shaping the fire brick with the front edge is an amazing idea!! Fine job Neil!👍😊
Thanks Jed! I'm not sure if that was over the top shaping the fire brick to the opening but it was easy enough so I thought why not! :)
You’re welcome and I definitely don’t think it was over the top. If nothing else it shows that we should all be thinking outside of the box😉😊
Thanks mate! :)
It’s my pleasure!👊

What a great project! I have it saved for future reference, and thank you for sharing all of your experience.
No worries Marcus! :)

Absolutely fantastic video making ... Not to mention the craftsmanship!
Thanks Derek! :)
Good video man love the quality of your work

Thanks very much Adrian! I reckon the Knifemaking bug is spreading all over, it's going to be fun learning something new! :)
Thats a great way of drawing straight lines on a curved surface, thanks for sharing that.
I did not know what he was doing until the end. Great work.
awesome, must be nice to have such practical knowledge and skill where your contemporaries don't have a clue! Thanks!
That was an excellent build. I imagine that a forge like that will have many uses, and will serve you for years to come. I can't wait to see what you will create in the future using it!
Thanks Alex - I reckon it's going to be a fun addition to the workshop! :)
Nice build. Enjoyed it. Couldn't help but close my eye when you struck an arc. Lol.
Looks great. I trust myself to use an angle grinder. I do NOT trust myself to weld. Never done it.
A nicely produced video about a nicely built project. Enjoyed watching that.
Excellent job mate.....I wish I had one as I am just getting started in knife making at 73 lol....Cheers
Thanks Mike - that's awesome! :)
its not how long it takes to get there thats important its getting there and having fun doing it thats most special!.
It's always great to observe superb craftsmanship.....thanks for your time and trouble !
Mate, top job, Aussie made, built to last, with a touch of humour "20mm ish" loved it, instant new sub.
Glad you enjoyed it mate! :)
One of the nicer forges ive seen built
Good job
Fellow QLD'er 👍 great video mate. Probably the best DIY cost effective forge you can build.
Thanks very much mate! Go the Maroons! :)
Love the craftsmanship! I do miss welding, one of these days get myself a little 110 machine for the garage.
Great to see someone who does this properly. If you add a thin layer of refractory in the walls and ceiling too it will be more durable and you're safer from cancerous fibers coming loose from the blanket.
What temperature did you reach in the end?
Thanks for the video!
Thanks Espen! I took it 850c for this test but I believe it should go to 1200c! :)
Yeah the rigidizer isn't intended to be in direct contact with the full flame
Double talking two faced
Greatful critisizer
offering the after fact assistance that will never matter to anyone
Happiest sad video ever
Said the perfectionist to the narcissist !
I’ve been looking at one of these kits for a while, thanks for showing how it’s put together Neil.
No worries Carl - glad it was helpful! :)
Awesome video. Thanks for uploading!
Here I was thinking you were going to use painter's tape to make your lines on the cylinder and you come up with something simple but genius. Well done Pask!
Great build! I loved watching it. 👍
I had no idea what I was watching but that's such a well constructed and balanced clip it held my attention until I figured it out. Brilliant editing
Loved it! Thanks Neil. (Oh and I'm still yet to make my first forge, and now you've made two. Best I pull my finger out ;)
Yes mate, you'd better get on with it! ;) Thanks Scott! :)
If you want to make something easy and not too expensive theres an awesome video on it from essential craftsman. It only requires simple tools and can be built in a fery short amount of time. I built that forge and it works very well for the projects I use it for.
That was brilliant! Taking two or three of those tanks you can create larger forges for larger projects. Just need more burners.
"GASMATE"
What else would be written on an Australian gas bottle?
Marmite! Because we all know how explosive a topic that stuff is!
True that 😁 Aussie an proud 👍
great job of keeping this video relatively short - for such a big time consuming project - you made everything very clear in an awesome way by using great camera angels and sweet and short notes where needed... great job on this one! like the style :)
Thank you! I try to keep my videos moving along and I went back to my older style for this one with plenty of captions! :)
Thanks very much mate! :)
when you have use a hole saw put a couple small hole on the perimeter of the cut so material can fall through this will extend the life of your hole saw by quiet a bit.
man, that looks amazing! I just ordered a forge but now I wish I had made one like you!
Thanks very much - have fun with you're new forge! :)
I like the propane tank because of it being cheap! But I am a welder in the pipefitters Union, and I am looking at doing this with pipe, standard wall any where from 12"-20" in diameter, with a welded cap on one side and 1/4" - 1/2"plate on the front side. Thanks for sharing have a blessed week
sweet , now you can do that 20 part viking sword series :)
Thanks Joey! I haven't seen any of the viking sword one yet but I have been watching a lot of Alec Steele over the last few months! :)
Насладился четким пониманием поставленой задачи и её выполнением. Спасибо за науку. Сибирь. Красноярск.
I like it. It looks like a firey version of Marvin from "the Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy".
Nice custom build ! Don't listen to the haters, they only hate what they don't understand. The likes is all that matters. Being machanically inclined with creativity and an ocd of protectionist is a passion meny just don't have. I liked it !
Thank you for showing how you've made your forge.
Is there any danger in grinding a pressure vessel after you've "uncorked" it?
No worries Boris! There's no danger with a new bottle! Much easier than messing around flushing out a used bottle! :)
I would fill it once with water and drain it before I cut.
Ah. A new bottle is even safer...
it is amlost certain to explode, if you use an old tank and do not wash it out.
Glad you liked it - Thanks! :)
Like that paint
About to make one of these. but from a fabricator of nearly 30 years I'm sure it's been said already but do all your paint removal and marking out before you cut the ring off the bottom and do all your rolling, welding and grinding before you cast the refractory floor inside and don't use gal material near heat
All it needs now is a tail and some ears. I did have a good laugh during your DJ segment.
I couldn't do it Riaan, this ones a serious one! ;) Glad you liked that - just having a bit of fun! :)
Great job! and yet again a thorough, technical, well made project that I will never be able to replicate!
A grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain't
I used that exact kit from Gameco. I found the lack of any instructions alarming, especially for the burners. I honestly had fear starting them up because I had no idea whether I had them set up right or not.
I found them very helpful and answered a few questions I had, you should've got in touch with them if you were unsure and they would have put you right! Hopefully you set it up right and you're having fun with it! I'm hopefully going to start on my first knife later this week! :)

Can you buy Liquid Rigidizer without a prescription? Asking for a friend.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
What a great video, look forward to going through your other stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously though, when are you installing the pig ears?
Haha - not this time! :)
Awwww, why not since you retired the other one?
Lol
Pleasure to watch you work!!
I already miss the Scrapwood Challenge song.
There'll be another before the end of the week! :)
There will be the heavy metal version - scrap metal challenge.
Scrap iron challenge, scrap iron challenge,
This metal’s cussed, it’s full of rust,
But some of the steel is real.
Queue screaming guitar riff, vocals in a death metal roar.
Gary Cooper Hahah👍😂
Ordered my forge kit and just picked up a new gas bottle today. Can’t wait
That’s awesome mate - have fun! 😊
fantastic!!
No wasting time. Very informative. Neat job.
Another great video. Does this replace the piggy forge? : ) Loved the "nonsense" part. : )
Thanks mate! Yep Fergus is all but retired. Glad you liked the nonsense, just having a bit of fun! :)
Thanks very much for the suggestions, I'm totally new to this and appreciate the advice! :)
@2:30 Thought I had entered a "This Old Tony" video.
esreverni ytilaer this old tony is great! I love his videos!
That's a great looking forge right there, I'm sure it'll serve you well! Can't wait to see what you've got cooking up in there, so to speak.
Thanks Matt - exciting times ahead! :)
I don't know even know why, but I watched it 😂😂😂
Wow that was cool I too can’t wait to see what you’re going to build definitely gonna have to put this one on my bucket list
Thanks for this! I'll be making 'something' in the next couple months. This got me thinking.......which can be dangerous,
Dude! This is a very well finished forge that I saw.
You put Michelangelo on the floor, you're an artist.
Loved this video! I would love to have a forge. Do you know where I could get a kit in the USA?
Thanks Billy! I'm not sure where but someone else may answer! :)
google it
Nicest propane tank forge I've ever seen. Thanks for the video!
Thanks very much! :)
Красивый горн, и выглядит очень удобным.
Тигель, тигель. Ай лю, лю!
Been real fun watching your older videos seeing how the shop has changed and you not talking.
Hank hill would have a heart attack watching this video
Actually, He'd probably admire this guy's ingenuity
Maybe he'll turn a propane tank into a charcoal barbeque? 🤔
@@curbotize , no
@@bigosesteban3122 let's be real here. Even Hank Hill likes charcoal over propane.
God damnit bobby
Impressive work Pask.
357 dollars for that kit?! Ill pass on that.
You could buy a small gas forge already made for that.
buy the stuff on your own and it will be around 150 euro
Exceptional work & videos Pask, brilliant information.
*I can Bake a pizza in that* 🍕
Really clean. Great job
Hank Hill would be disappointed. How dare you disrespect propane accessories.
Mas
This is by far the best propane build Ive ever seen. Very good attention to detail, very well insulted. It's better then a store bought. Very nice my friend!! Great work!
I disagree. I didnt hear him insult it even once. It came out really nice, though. Is the wool more insulating than cement, or is it just easier to work with?
There is no such thing as too much nonsense!!!
It has to end at some point else nothing would get done!! ;)
haha fair enough...
I was just about to say the same thing!
I think Neil should come up with a whole album... #1 - Scrapwood Challenge Intro, #2 - Nonsense Dub... and so on.
YES!!!
That was a great forge build. I know what I’ll be rewatching when it comes time to make another forge.
Thanks very much! :)
If it was just a bit larger...It would make one heck of a Pizza Oven. :)
It does look like a mini pizza oven - cooks quick too! ;)
A nice tidy job, well done 👍🏻
