  • Eric Clapton performs a rare track, "Circus Left Town", during the "Unplugged" taping. This track wasn't released on the home video. It's a moving song about the death of his son Conor. He explains, in his own words, how he responded. The emotional performance was overshadowed by the success of "Tears in Heaven".

Saw Eric give this its first public performance at Brighton, he explained he had just finished writing it and it was " a bit rough round the edges" The tears were running down his cheeks by the time he finished. The audience were brilliant. Proud to have been their that night

Sue, I listened to this song as a teenager, and loved the tune. Now again as a father knowing the significance of the song. Don't think any parent can keep a dry eye listening and thinking about their child leaving them. I sure did not. xx May God allow the parents to find peace until we all meet again with the father.

Why would he feel forced to make songs about his dead son?

That's often how the artistic impulse works: you either get a sort of frisson, which usually seems to come from the base of your spinal column and up the nape of your neck; or you have some heaviness or some pervasive sense of sadness or urgency or whatever it might be, and then you try to channel those things into music. (Or whatever your art form is-I'm a writer, so that's how I get things out.) This sort of thing is a source of truly powerful material for making art, and then once you've channeled it into something, you feel as if you've put this raw, unprocessed brain matter to good use and hopefully made something lasting and beautiful out of it.
That's my attempt at answering your question, anyway.
