Thanks for the video! I bought my first home in 2023. Whoever did the bathroom in the house used grout in the corners of our shower. The grout has now cracked, so I've taken it out and will be applying silicone. Never done it before, so this was extremely helpful!
I’ve been putting off the task of resealing our bath for 4 years (since we moved in!) and I was half inclined to just get a handyman in to do it as I was scared of doing it wrong. This video (and your other video on removing sealant) were so helpful - you explained each step really well and gave me the confidence to have a go myself. It took me several hours to do but I’m pleased with the results, so thank you!
This was so helpful, thank you for such a clear demonstration, all the tips & tricks. Baby wipes was a game changer! Doing the sealant is my absolute nemesis but this time I made a decent job of it thanks to you!
Loved this video. I'm a bit OCD and a lady DIYer. Really helpful. Could do with spending a few months as your apprentice. Had various tradesmen out for jobs but it's so hit and miss I'd rather save the money and have a go myself.
I’ve always used masking tape and my finger haha. This was a really clear and detailed commentary on how to use a profile tool so I’m going to try that on my kitchen tiles. I hadn’t realised how long you can leave the silicon bead before profiling it, I always thought it would skin over.
Nice one 👍 I can't stand going behind taps 😫 you have to know when to stop when doing this sometimes don't you, there's been a few occasions when I got it looking 95% good and tried to get one little bit then made it loads worse! Haha I always get through a load of toilet roll when I do my sealing 😂 only use wipes sparingly as they're more expensive. The no nonsense wipes from screwfix are always on hand though ✌️
You need to shop in Aldi, 50p a pack for wipes. I pinch them from my boys room! You're right about over working it, too much and it goes lumpy. Practice makes perfect, problem is I don't practice much! Thanks for watching and keep up with the graft on your place. Looking good, the hard work will pay off in the end 👍
Some good tips, thanks. I was doing my bath today and I also have uneven tiles so tried masking tape put on tight to the tiles, acted as a guide to lessen the step. I bought some Silicone that was specially for bathroom - not much tooling time like yours so only got 5 mins before started going off - something to bear in mind when buying! Thanks
Thanks for posting your silicon sealant videos. Good preparation by clearing out the old sealant and using the Cramer sealant/grout tools certainly helped me get a decent bond and finish with my Matki shower base that had started to leak four years after installation. Cheers.
Thank you for such a plain talking video. As a total novice, I am confident enough now to give it a go. Hopefully it will be fully sealed, and being even half as neat as yours will be a bonus!
First time doing this and it's not perfect but I'm actually proud of how it came out! Was able to do a very decent job by following your tips. Thank you :)
bro, hands down the best beginner diy caulking tutorial video i have seen...getting ready to caulk today for the first time so i have been binging this past week on tutorials...thank you. One question, wont putting a screw in the tip mess up the tip for the next time you are ready to caulk by potentially making it bigger or making the sealant come out "screwy" (just a though i had today but i have seen this trick on other videos). I'm probably overthinking. Thanks for the video!!!
Sometimes the bath sides drop when a human steps in so it’s better to fill the bath then do this. The silicone sets with the bath dropped as much as it’s going to - so when it is stepped into it has less chance of breaking the seal under the bead.
These profiling tools only work well if the tiles have been laid very evenly and flat. Also, if the gap between the edge of the bath and the tiles is more than 5mm then you will be left with a huge wedge of silicone. In this case, use the good old finger & masking tape technique with a finger dipped into white spirit to get a nice smooth and even finish. Lastly, if you have to silicone vertical walls as well, it is best to do these first and then allow it to dry overnight before doing the horizontals - this way you should get a much neater corner. In case you're wondering, silicone does stick to silicone just like sh!t sticks to a blanket.
Yes appreciate the effort you put into these videos. I need to put sealant outside edge of my shower. I did my electrics with your expertise help, works fine. Now, I want to put a single light in my attic, with a light switch? Just need to look if you have made a video on that.
Thanks for another great vid Pouse. You’ve shown me so many practical and useful tips for working on my house. Didn’t know about the wet wipes. I’ll give them a try.
If I am a diy man and had a new bath I'd be asking the fitters why they have done half a job. If i need to seal it. Something I did recently after the kitchen floor replaced and they didn't seal and didn't even bother re fitting the bottom of the cupboards. Its almost like because there is a lack of skilled tradesmen I should be happy for a non complete job. Trades in uk are taking a liberty with the customers. Thanks for your advice tho. Going to now finish a job I paid a apparently reputable company to do. With your advice I can go do it.
Well not sure if you've seen my latest video, but I had a rant about exactly that with a window fitter! Video here in case you'd like to watch it - ua-cam.com/video/jsoSjwEkWXI/v-deo.html. Best of luck with the sealant.
Very Professional presentation, Script, video, clarity of script and step by step clear direction of tools ,method of use. Excellent all round. Follow the instruction and the job will present as a prfect, satifying result. You can now put your house guests in the bath again. Thanks result.
Profiling tool… or lolly stick. I’m new to DIY and watched loads of vids on sealant. The best tool I’ve seen used is a lolly stick. It leaves a decent amount of sealant behind so both sides of the join are covered with helps eliminate getting water behind the sealant and thus helping to eliminate the pesky black stuff and also looks finished well too.
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE Profile tool is better than lolly stick. An unused credit card with corners cut to different angles could be used as a profile tool.
Very good video and clear explanation thank you I will give it a go soon, hope I can do it like being shown here and yes we do appreciate the effort you have put in 😅😅😅
Try the soft silicon tool now available. I’ll never go back to “hard” plastic ones. Also I always wondered why they were 90 degrees. 85 is way better. Surprise surprise! Now available.
Dear Pouse, I have a vertical bead of sealant in the corner of my shower running from the ceiling to the base of the shower tray. I need to replace this bead of sealant along with the bead that runs along the base of the shower tray. Does it matter which one I do first? Many thanks.
I'd do the horizontal first then the vertical so a clean bead will run down over the horizontal ensuring water runs off nicely. Any small ledges of sealant coukd hold water which over time could start to go moldy. Hope that helps 👍
Thanks for the feedback. There will be a video where stairs are fitted, just haven't uploaded it yet. I've filmed the whole of the loft conversion it's just finding time to edit all the footage! Thanks for watching👍
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE thanks for the reply looking forward to it. And love all the videos. They inspire me to do work round my own house. Obviously everything checked by the professionals.
Another great video. I find pushing the gun rather than pulling it gives a better finish. I use soapy water on the tool to get a smoother finish. As for taps, they're a pain. As somebody else said, you need to know when to stop and leave it. 👍
I hope your old pant are 100% cotton :-P good vids bro, can you do a sealant vid on kitchen appliances such as cookers and sinks...asking for a friend lol
And most importantly - YOU MUST FILL THE TUB FULL OF WATER WHEN APPLYING THE SILICONE, AND LEAVE IT FULL WHILE IT CURES. This is mandatory in almost all instances, especially if there are any larger gaps. Failure to do so has made many a home reno person do it TWICE.

When I go over it with the tool it is spreading the black everywhere and when it first happened I thought oh I'll just wipe it off and clean it up as i go but obviously when i go back to wipe off the excess it ruins the neat line and it is a nightmare to get off. Ive been watching so many videos and everyone seems to have a neat line when the tool is used whereas i have a neat line but the sealant just spreads out. No idea if it is because of black sealant - i dont think so! Anyway ... Ill continue watching videos to find the answer lol
Did you have any luck? I wonder if there's something on the bath tub reacting with sealant causing it to spread? Or wrong type of sealant? Hope it worked out for you.
I worked with a painter n decorator over 20 years ago. And he would not let me clean the Upvc windows with white spirit saying it affects the shine on the Upvc. That I don't no if it is the case. Does anyone no? Please comment. Thank you very much.. 😊 He would clean with sugar soap powder mixed in warm water n sponge..
There is a great deal of good advice in this video, but there is a commercial element in it, as in many others. I needed to renew the sealing in my shower cubicle, it was leaking. I'm no DIY expert & followed to the the letter the instructions in this video & two others, results poor. Scraped the 3 poor results out & tried an anamalgam of all 3, perfect! Here's how to get perfect results: Scrape out the old sealant & finish it with a hard toothbrush, make sure all surfaces are bone dry with a good hair dryer. Now we're ready to apply the new sealant: have a small bowl of warm soapy water in your cubicle & plenty of newspaper to hand when you start; (you'er on your knees here,) don't stream the sealant, dot it every one centimetre or so; then spread the sealant with your finger wettet in the warm, soapy solution; you will find it clings to the surfaces, spreads easily & fills the gaps...job done!
There's no commercial element to the video. It's not sponsored and I state that other tools are fine. I do have amazon links in the description but there is no obligation to buy through these links. It's just how I do my sealant. Hope that makes sense 👍
Our tap is almost touching the tile due to the addition of tile backer boards used to square poor solid walls. Really not looking forward to trying to make a good job of it behind the tap because the silicone is going to have to go over the tap pillar
At last! He suggests white spirit! I’ve been doing that a few years now. Couldn’t understand why the product suggests turpentine. Isn’t that an oil? Why would you want oil under your silicon. It does not dry fast and probably leaves residue. Methylated spirit an option, but it does not dissolve old silicon and soap.
After putting the silicone on I sprays mix of water and washing up liquid over the joint, this stops the silicone sticking to the tiles when you use your profile

what is the purpose of the silicon . is this done for water proofing ?
To seal the bath to the tiles and stop water leaking down to the floor. So yes, water proofing.

16 TUBES LATER. This is why you see a receipt for the job with 23 tubes of silicone for the Bathroom.
I only used one and had some left over. Not sure why you'd use 23?
After putting the silicone on I sprays mix of water and washing up liquid over the joint, this stops the silicone sticking to the tiles when you use your profile
but then you get water / moisture behind the silicone you just put down, no? seems like you'd want to push it into the joint first and then clean up.
Thanks for the info 👍
