Pro tip from Indian: add roasted cashew or just roast it with other whole spices while making sauce.
Always add garam masala at the end after adding chicken, that makes spices more powerful and prevent it from disappearing under cream and butter.

Well in general Indians don't take it as an offence when, Non-Indians cook Indian dish in a slightly different manner/way ( ofcourse deviating completely & from the basics won't be appreciated). Italians are much more critical in that regard.

I ate at an authentic Indian restaurant for the first time in my life. I’m not joking when I say my mind was blown. It was the most delicious, lively, colorful and vibrant tastes layered, each spice level was a beautiful experience all combining to a beautiful symphony for my taste buds. I now know what having your mind blown feels like. I felt like crying because I had never experienced such a beautiful experience with food. Now I am hungry for more experiences with authentic cuisine from around the world to experience. I had not realized how starved for experience with different cultural foods I was and I’m so thankful my introduction was so special at that Indian restaurant. Not only was the food an amazing experience for my mouth, the staff was so kind, wonderful hosts and they were so intuitive. You barely had to ask for anything as they already anticipated your needs. It truly was a special memory and I am so thankful for it. I am hoping that I can try to bring some of that desire into action in my own kitchen in the mean time and hence the UA-cam search. I also have promised that I would raise my young children to be raised experiencing more foods from around the world so they don’t have to wait till their 38 to have the experiences for themselves. ❤
Did you try this butter chicken recipe?? It's a must have
While waiting for the cashews to get cooked, the tomato base may get reduced too much which may alter the taste. You can soak the cashews in water for about 20 minutes and then add it or after soaking make it into a fine paste, then add it to the mixture at the end so that u don't have to wait for the cashews to get softened + you'll get the smoothest sauce. 🤤🧡
The cardamom used here is called Big Cardamom or Black Cardamom when you shop. Regular cardamom is normally green cardamom. Black cardamom has a slightly different flavor profile than green. You can use both. Also, if you soak the cashew in hot water for 15 min, it will cut down the cooking time and will not burn the tomatoes. Makes it easier to manage for people new to Indian cooking.
Instead of Chicken, try with Panner for vegetarian version. And you can add tofu, vegan butter and oatly curd for vegan version. You may have to adjust the cooking time through trial and error.
Thanks! I was wondering about that cardamom. I had only seen the green ones before.
If I use paneer, should I marinate it?
@@000euMJ no need but if you add paneer make sure to add it once the gravy is done, otherwise it will be rubbery. Make sure while you add paneer stove should be turned off
@@000euMJ you can either shallow fry or roast the paneer in a tandoor/oven
You can follow the same process as the chicken, but make sure to add either corn flour or besan (gram flour) in the marinade to prevent drying out. Otherwise Manoj’s way works. Roasting or pan frying also works

Related mitra but using canned tomatos
I mean canned food isn't available in india
Spl thanks for not using the word curry 😂😂 instead she rightly said it as GRAVY
@@sarangthombre671 Yes canned food is available in India.
I made this today and it was so good! I’m not Indian food expert, but it tastes like my favorite places that I can’t go to now because of COVID. Almost shed a little tear at the first bite. Next time I’ll marinate over night but I just marinated for about 4 hours. I found an Indian market close-ish to my house to get the Kashmiri chili powder and dried Fenugreek leaves and boyyy do they make the dish. I have enough Garam Masala left over to make the dish again at least 3 more times. ❤️
To make the chicken pieces more flavourful, take a piece of coal in a small bowl, burn it and add 1 tbps of ghee and cover it along with the marinated chicken. After 10 minutes, remove it and you will definitely feel a tandoori kind of flavour in your chicken. :)
@@dipjyotidas8864 Aye thanks for that tip!
Garam masala will never go stale, you can store it for as long as you wish, it’s really a staple masala in most Indian dishes.
@@sudarshan619 you can store garam masala for limited period only as the aroma is lost after some time.. That's why it has to be ground in small quantities.
Proud of you. Invite this peasant next time.

Making it tonight for my friends birthday and thought I should say something. I found this video during the pandemic and have been addicted ever since. There’s lots of great recipes on this channel.
*This narrator's calm voice and the way she explained it, makes this video even better*
Wow that's actually pretty authentic! The color, the consitency all look on point.
At home we would just use the whole chicken not a specific part. Also true for most restraunts. Some of the the more high end ones try to do this bone less style. That to me isn't really the traditional. It was afterall made from left overs..bones and all. Except for the canned tomatoes ofcourse. But I can completely beleive they turn out better since those tomaroes are usually canned at their prime. We just don't have that in Indian homes.
No matter how you do it though, it is a truly mind blowing dish. My memories of childhood are full of this dish in Dhabas across Punjab!
Yes...of course
Would you blend the gravy at home? I've followed this recipe and I found the gravy too creamy compared to the ones in restaurants. I'm not sure the restaurants are accurate though.
@@000euMJ Yes actually blending is part of the accepted process now. I definitely do it at home. Blending and straining through a seive to get an ultra smooth, silky, creamy texture. It basically takes out the tomato skins and any tough fibres from the onions.
Leaving them in doesn't really affect the flavour but the texture changes.

Pro tip: Hey! I’m an Indian, and when we make butter chicken in our house, we use both butter and ghee. As stated in the video, butter makes it creamier, while ghee makes it richer. DO NOT ADD OIL IF YOU ARE USING BOTH GHEE AND BUTTER
Happy Cooking✨
And I would tell you to skip the heavy cream and half the amount of sugar otherwise it just ends up as sweet chicken which doesn’t taste good✨
Sweet chicken tastes great to me
I guess white people just can't handle the spice level of butter chicken without the sugar smh
Yes I cringed when she added the sugar into the sauce, I will wait to see how the sauce taste and go lightly if needed
Who else here isn't Indian and came to the comments to see if the recipe is indian approved before watching the video?
Very wrong recipe 😭
As an Indian 70-80% marks... Not very authentic... It gets A... 🎉
I am Indian and I still came to the comments to check lol
🙋♀️
No...?
To add that smoky tandoor flavour, you can heat a piece of charcoal till it's red, then put in a small steel bowl with tongs, place the the bowl in the finished butter chicken like a boat, pour some butter/ghee on the charcoal and quickly shut the lid. ;)
After about 10 mins, the smoke would've seeped into the gravy. Mix well and serve! Enjoy!
I was looking to possibly make this at home. No way. I could never take such a detailed recipe on. I do have a renewed respect for these dishes and those who prepare them.
This is a very basic dish for us tho - like once a week 🤷🏻♀️. Its pretty frequently eaten.
Dont get intimidated by the amount of ingredients, take it step by step and you'll find its a pretty simple dish to make. Also for the ingredients, feel free to buy over the counter spices from any indian store or online, they have pretty good shelf life and a worthy investment if youre planning on cooking indian food a lot.
@@anushkaa28 But why are you smug about it?
Just skip the 2 first main step of making your own gramma masala and get store bought, and then just add garlic and ginger paste- it helps cut the two harder/ingredient heavy steps for beginners till your prepared to make your own/enjoy it enough to invest in supplies! ☺️
my indian mom was laughing when i read ur comment to her , for her making butter chicken is no different from making a pancake lol
Omg I’m so making this. I can’t believe I have almost all the spices after making Pho stock.

yesssssssss
yup yup
True 😆
lol this is so true
Yes 😂
This may be the only Indian recipe that I've seen from Tasty that is great and makes sense. The narrator did a great job as well.
i've never made indian food before, i've never even had it before! but it always looked so good so i tried this recipe and i have to say it was a success! family members who have had butter chicken at restaurants before said it was a 10/10 and tasted like the real deal so to anyone thinking about trying this recipe i 100% recommend it! it was worth all of the hours standing in the kitchen :')
So I made this, and it was really good, just like from our favortite Indian place! Just a few notes here:
- It was really spicy, even for someone who likes that, so I would be careful with the chili. But maybe it was the amount of spices in general, because...
- Ignore the garam masala advice, I doubled the amount, like they said in the video, because I used store bought and I had to wash the chicken after marinating (after I cooked it of course, I didn't try raw chicken lol), because it was was to bitter. For the sauce I used the normal amount, because I knew better by then and it was the perfect amount for me. So if it's your first time, use the normal amount, and see for yourself, if your garam masala is strong enough and maybe add a little afterwards
- soak the cashews in water for a while before putting them in, I did that for 20 min and it STILL NEEDED 15 minutes until they where soft in the tomato mixture. Without the soaking it would have taken much longer and I would have probably lost a good amount of the tomato sauce
- It was exactly my taste, but it was on the sweeter side. So if you're not a fan of the sweetness, put less sugar in in and try, before adding more.
-and last but not least: for my european pals, I made the chicken with the upper grill function (the one with the little triangles) in my oven and it was 250°, took 10 min until it was done and I turned it once.
Thanks for the recipe! 😇
Don't taste marinated chicken.. Do adjustment in final part of cooking.
@@rohanroy7872 I'm glad I did (after it was cooked of course), because if I had thrown it in the sauce the way it was, the whole dish would habe been ruined 😊
I love the way this was filmed, & edited, whomever is voicing, & cooking. Please do more videos! This video was absolutely enjoyable, informative & pleasing to watch.
This style of video is the best I’ve seen. I got to learn some history, context, culture, and a new found appreciation for the spices, and styles. And it was a unique follow along video! I like how she explained the process ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏼
I made this today. It’s sooo good. I used my immersion blender to blend it right in the pot. Don’t skip the Garam Masala part it’s so integral to the taste of the dish. I live in Toronto one block from little India so finding all the whole spices was easy for me & cheaper since Indians shop there all the time. Now I’m stocked up for next time. I added more Kashmiri powder & more fenugreek leaves. My sauce thickened fast so I used 1/2 cup of chicken stock to even it out. Then it tighten again when I added a little more butter and cream.
Oh wow! I'm a foodie and discovered Indian cuisine approx. 13 years ago and have not tried butter chicken yet. Love Indian food! I'm so curious to try this dish. It's on my menu of things to make soon. This looks absolutely delicious.
This narrator's voice and the way she explained it , makes this video even better
A question for Tasty: will the recipe show up eventually on Tasty app? I need to save other recipes besides brownies…😉
And then it was there! On the Tasty app with quantities and everything!!!
Love the tip on cutting strips of chicken vs cubes to get more flavor. The creaminess of the butter chicken seems to ooze through the screen!
Wow the way Indian cuisine brings in spices that I never thought would come together so beautifully. I have eaten Butter chicken with Naan and never knew that it involves Nutmeg, Cinnamon. Since they’re typically used as a comfort “seasonal” spice for sweeter dishes.
That's a lot of detailed info. for 8 minute video Tasty really up a notch on this one kudos 🔥☺️
This is one of the most authentic butter chicken recipe I've seen props to tasty.
Although as an Indian I'd suggest adding green cardamom pods into to the spice mix and as well as in the gravy and rather than adding the cashews after the tomatos, add them before or along with the onions because slight roasting them gives the dish a different dimension.
Also add the garam masala in the end before blending, that makes the gravy more aromatic and more vibrant in color.
For those who don't use sugar you can use honey as a substitute it works very well
I love this format where Kanchan tried various alternative ingredients and tells you the pros and cons. She understood those looking at UA-cam for recipes are up for trying things. So what if this is not most authentic, it is the creamiest. She should do this more! Btw I tried this recipe and love it! For those who says their grandma's butter chicken is better, make a UA-cam video else your comment is useless.
This is one of the most exciting video i ever see in UA-cam about a dish the explanation the culture well done…cannot wait to cook it for my wife thank you!
Butter Chicken has to be one of the most popular and tastiest curry, and the curry with Naan will just be an explosion on your mouth.
tyttus?
While making this either pre-roast the cashews or add them in the beginning to the oil to add more flavor. Trust me it'll a noticable difference. Also you soak the cashews (plain or roasted) in boiling for a little while to soften them to cut down on the cooking, just reincorporate the soaking water later cause that'll also have flavor. And as tip you can you honey instead of sugar to sweeten the Gravy, while adding some floral notes in the background. The honey will also break down the chicken a little more, making super tender.
WOW just made this yesterday & it came out excellent my parents loved it! I used store-bought seasonings rather than fresh seasonings. Next time I will use fresh seasonings to see the difference however with store bought seasoned it is good but like the video says double up on it! I did exactly what the video said for everything and you want to make sure that the cashews do get soft!! That is the key . Other than that I would advise if you are making this for a lot of people use a lot of chicken because some of the chicken shrinks , as well as use a lot of tomato sauce I used two really small cans because that is all I had but I would probably recommend using a 30 ounce tomato sauce can that should do you good enough but definitely the more chicken the better! PS she wasn’t lying when she said your kitchen will smell amazing lol
One of the best videos I ever seen ,well planned, excellent presentation, very informative and easy to follow ,very authentic Indian dish ,thank you very much .I tried it with minor deviation and turned out to be super delicious
This is actually really authentic. I'm impressed
One of the simplified Visually appealing easy recipes and most importantly a non complicated process of Butter Chicken masala ever seen here 💗💗💗
I got my recipe from my old roommates mother. She used to bring Indian food from home and when we graduated I would go to a restaurant in Manhattan to get it, it wasn’t as good and cost so much. Of course I reached out to check on her and she asked me if I was getting my butter chicken fix, she gave me her recipe, I changed a few things to taste (I like a lot of garam masala) now I can make it myself and I love it - made it for a date and he was shocked that it tasted so great, I took the compliment because he is Indian too.
I made this yesterday and the taste was so close to the fave one I had when I went to India. Thanks Tasty! 🤗❤

I approve and i totally agree. Pureed or tinned tomatoes make it taste better. Also i would double the amount of cream if your going to make butter chicken go all out. But yes this is great. And if you find everest tandoori powder( u get it at indian spice markets) add it in. It adds a smoky paprika spicy sweetness which complements this dish very well. Love it.

My friend just made this today for the first time and gave me some. It is absolutely delicious.
This is one of my favorite indian dishes so full of flavor nice job 👍
Sounds fantastic! I'll have to use this method to make the butter chicken!
I made yesterday ! All i can say, hurry up make it soon 👏
I have a tip take some charcoal in small bowl burn it, place it in the cooking pan’s centre then put some ghee it will create smoke and close the pan with lid completely. Serve after 10 mins to take the game to next level! Thank me later 🍻
No you should be thanking the Mughals for bringing culinary richness to India
@@phoenixgrove mughals?! No it was globalisation in food industry.
Had this on a restaurant close by, amazing dish really really good. Excited to try at home sometime in the future.
I just threw 2 pieces of lamb into a dal dish .. boil.

I love your attention to detail! Didn’t think to add the lemon juice to the marinade, and the cashews, good touch 👌🏾 but I must disagree about substituting ghee for butter- I’ll sacrifice the texture for rich nuttiness only ghee can give 😋
This was finally a butter chicken from outside India that doesn’t taste sweet and the details (except using butter) like using cashews Garam masala and etc were on point
This looks so good!! 😋
Hello from India hope to try this recipe one day

I can tell that it's authentic because there are SO many ingredients!!
I'm Indian and my mom makes butter chicken in just a hour and believe me it's the bestest dish I can have the rest of my life
Always nice when your local grocery store doesnt sell certain items, great. :D
It depends where you're located. Its unlikely to find Indian spices in a British/American store. You'll most likely find them in an Indian based store than your local supermarket.
Watching in Houston, Tx! Thank you for the recipe! Can't wait to make!!

@@richa6072 that’s true… but that started when mum started cooking on her own 😂😂
I graduated to using chat masala and maggi masala in half of the stuff 😂😂
