Yup, we are in another downturn after a major upturn in 2018-2020. Fashionable trends are fickle but true skaters will skate and progress daily no matter how popular it is. They didn't get into it because it was cool in the first place. They just found their passion.

I always used to like skateboarding because I thought it looked cool. Now that I actaully started skating, I just love the feeling of it. I don't do any tricks and I'm not sure I'll ever learn any. I just enjoy the feeling of going around parks changing angles and speed and being able to keep my balance. I agree and also think that the YT skateboarding is a bit more insulated then the 'actual' industry as they will feel the fad fading. Here, imo, the majority of followers wont stop watching just cuz they dont skate anymore... and this might lead to ppl calling YT skating as 'fake' skateboarding community. Businesses are supported by our dollars, content creators are supported by views, so like John said, here its about the entertainment.

Wasnt too long ago I walked into a skate shop in the city with baggy trackies and a board under arm and had a group of teens mock me under their breaths, they were shopping for shoes and didn't have boards with them.
Not calling them posers, but there's definitely a lot of people who got into skating for the culture and not the skating. sounds harmless until you understand that skating _is_ the culture. The baggy jeans are agile and durable, the flowy clothes are breathable and easier to move in. The chill vibes come from the meditative nature of cruising, and the focus and discipline required for tricks and other parts of skating. Skating forces you to clear your mind but stay present and grounded, a great exercise in mindfulness. There's so much to say you could write a book on it (kinda like "zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance", great read).
Might not be a bad thing that skateboarding is falling back out of the mainstream, keeps the culture from outgrowing it's shoes, if you will. Kinda like with anime, all you see nowadays is shonen superhero shows that take inspiration from western pop culture.
The surge of popularity may have gotten a lot of people into it, for better or worse. But, as others have said, the true skaters will still be out there skating.

  • @NickDusting

As someone who started skating in the 70s and saw skateboarding more or less die ... chill, not a problem. Yes it's not the huge wave it was a few years back - because it's now an established sport. There will always be downturns in popularity but the core skaters will stay with it and encourage more people with a little balance to do the same.... it's just too much fun not to. And yes - people still exist at my age who skated in the 70s - I'm 59 and can still skate.

Skateboarding for me was at its peak from the mid 2000's to the early 2010's. I have the experience of being able to bring a skatepark to my township, (started as a senior project, and became bigger than me, I’m now a sophomore in college, and the park was added to the 2023 budget) and if I had tried to do so 7 years ago it would have been much harder to get authority support. The olympics legitimizes sports and while skateboarding used to be niche and legitimacy hurts that “niche” quality, I’ll take the posers, the baggy pant, sb dunk, tiktok kids, if it means more skateparks for the collective.

I think skateboarding being more popular is brilliant for skateboarding.
People want to keep it underground but really does it matter?
The people who love it will keep skating, those who do it for a trend will give up quickly but in the mean time, the facilities and the products will just get better and better.
In the last few years I have seen a massive increase in improved facilities l, old run down skateparks being revamped, my home town it’s skatepark was rusted and broken and then spent the last 10 years as a empty space as they removed the ramps, now recently they have built a new park there which never would have happened without the increase in popularity. And why shouldn’t skaters get paid well like other athletes and get the support they need to keep there bodies in tip top shape, they trash there bodies for skating they should get paid well in the process and have after care support.

Great video! I've been skateboarding since 97 and somewhere around 2008 ... (guy on a handrail era) Skateboarding felt super lame and then it bounced back, the original berrics and focusing on progression again started to make it feel cool once more but in my opinion the crazy over saturation of very talented skaters is what is starting make the extraordinary seem ordinary and the industry doesn't have time to focus on a person and make them a lasting name in the industry. Rollerblading is a great example of something that feels more core and real because they have had to grind it out in the trenches getting shit on by everybody .. (like skateboarders in the 70's-80's early 90's) and as a result they have a very tight industry where everybody knows everybody, there is an incredible amount of respect for the former and current pros. I've been to a Blade Cup and I've been to a Street League .. the vibe is night and day different.

I personally started skating when the burst happened, Competition's became almost unfair with all the new skaters learning so much in a short period of time and as skate equipment technology grew, so did the skill level of skateboarding. It went from the outcasts sport to Everyone picking up a board. Me personally, I was bullied out of school, and it was therapy. The pain took everything off my mind and it taught me how to deal with frustration and if anything, It gave me courage when I needed it most. Skateboarding is just losing the unintended attenders that was provided. All the clout chasers or trend teasers is finally leaving a good sport alone and to my generation, We've grown up. All your viewers was us when we caused the burst in 2014-2017, Now we're all working and can no longer skate, Jobs isn't as time gifting as youtubers make it seem, you guys can live a free life and just record it and it can sustain your career while you still have much free time. Most school graduates just are pushed into factory work, believe it or not but 12-16 hour shifts kill you over time, so a passion like skateboarding dies off like a dream. Maybe in death I'll have enough freetime to skate again like I use too. Until then I'll still be encouraging people I know to pick up a board. Learn what they can while they have time left.

Okay but I have a theory about this. I’m optimistic. I noticed the massive increase in interest in skateboarding, at least in the UK came with the release of EA’s Skate 3. It made household names of pro skaters and I think loads of people got into it off the back off a video game and that wave continued for about 10 years. Some of the best skaters I know got into it because of that game. We haven’t had a big skateboarding video game (aside from the Tony Hawk remaster) in years. It’s not completely far fetched to say that with the release of Skate 4 or ‘Skate.’ as they’ve named it, there could be another resurgence? Just a thought.

Off and on since June of 05. I’m 30 so I guess I’m “og” skater but from weed, mental health, etc… I could never stay consistent for no more than two maybe three years at a time. Love the sport, miss when I’m not active, only exercise that can turn me into a rail in months… mental health just love to get me out of it. I pray next time I catch the wave it stays. I got nothing else going but work anyway😂

Also, if you were a kid in the 90's and early 00's all the kids shows and movies had a skateboarding scene. So I feel like it was way more popular back then, I think rollerblading was way more popular back then as well, now it's just a niche, but I think unless you actually skateboard or subscribe to channels like this on youtube or other social media you won't know if it's popular. I was just curious if people cared about skateboard randomly.

Noticed the 13-15yo are getting bored of Skateboarding, the 35-40yo are just now picking it back up. Give it time, things will only get better. One thing I have noticed is the HUGE fall off of aggressive inline. Not 100% sure what happened there other than them not being in X Games and other competitions anymore. I found my old Roces and K2s and am amazed at how hard parts are for them and im afraid to wear them down and so the skates get put away as a treasure and the skateboard comes out as a 'relic'.

Dance music, Rock (Indie, Punk, Classic), Hip-Hop, Metal etc.. also go through their cycles.
Don't fret. Keep doing what you think is cool. Eventually, it will come around. Stay true!
Trends will come back around. You'll be in a unique position when it does.

When I started skating back in 1986 it started to get big again, by 87-88 it was pretty big, nd we had a contest in town for the locals. By the early 90's there was a recession and skateboarding started to decline. You need money to skate. X-Games helped bring it back. I was there at the beginning of extreme rollerblading as an adult, then watched it die off.

As far as they're being an upturn or should I say downturn after such a bursting popularity with skateboarding, I think could be debatable.
At this point I think that skateboarding as a whole is trying to sort itself out. At this point skateboarding has been divided into different genres I believe we'd have to say, we now have surf skating, longboarding (which can be divided into genres itself), cruiser boarding, core freestyle skateboarding (not to be mistaken with longboard freestyle), stand up paddle skateboarding, LDP or long distance pump/push Skateboarding. That's just off the top of my head, so we can suffice it to say at this point skateboarding is trying to figure out even the different genres, practically every genre has different genres within itself.
So as a whole skateboarding is more popular than ever, embracing practically every age bracket.
For instance myself I'm 62 going on 23 and I've had some type of skateboard under my feet for almost five decades.

Rollerblading definitely isn't seen as being cooler than skateboard, niche factor or not. There's a reason skateboarding has stuck around for decades and has had multiple waves of "coolness" that rollerblades/scooters/parkour don't have. But you're right about riding the wave, not BEING the wave. And if skating is becoming uncool again then whatever, the people who stick through it are the ones that blow up when the cycle starts over just like the late 80s to early 90s.

I think you're right although I personally think parkour is the coolest, public opinion really just enjoyed it when it was gimmicky in the early 2010's even though the sport to more stylistic and impressive than it has ever been. But I think you're incorrect in assuming that parkour, or rather freerunning, doesn't itself have the factors that make skateboarding appealing. There are just as, If not more ways to implement your own style in parkour/freerunning and the sport is just more versatile. Although there will probably never be a fashion surrounding it to the scale of skate culture.

Its very hard for most people to profit off skateboarding to make it a very successful living/career that can help change your life as well as your family so you can buy a car, a house, maybe buy your fiance a wedding ring, and so you can do it everyday like we would love too, without having to worry about doing a career you do not want to do and being able to do one on the field that you want that makes you happy in life. For the ones who can do that i am happy for you also praying for your success and i do the same as well for the majority of people who skateboard who have different circumstances which does not give them time to invest time into getting better at skateboarding. I understand that when i skateboard i appreciate the exercise part of it and having fun. But people who dont skate who try it for the one time or just watch skateboarding on there phones might not think the same because they enjoy the entertainment part of it by watching on social media or contribute to skateboarding by buying skate merch they do use and maybe skateboards they never use besides the one time probably. People who dont skate i cant blame them for not wanting to do the extreme sport because one it is dangerous and not for everybody they might prefer a different extreme sport or regular sport that they are used to that feels safer to them or might feel it will benefit them more than skateboarding in the long run like, baseball, soccer, basketball, and football where you can get a scholarship not like skateboarding but they might think skateboarding is is still cool, and my second reason is high risk low reward factor for people who skate and dont skatr because when you skateboard you dont get anything for progressing and getting better at landing tricks. Unless you have a job that pays you for skateboarding and you are one of the rare some in the world who get paid for it. But for majority of skaters who dont get paid for skateboarding just do it for the love and passion for it, i am going to make it clear that i am not saying the skaters who do get paid dont do it for the same reason but i am 100% sure you are more motivated also try different tricks in different spots that you probably would have never try because you are getting paid to do it to help you survive and live in life to continue doing what you love to take on different risk to get better to do so. Plus all you get from skateboarding from both getting paid vs not getting paid is it looks/feels really cool also rewarding when you do land a trick and other skaters hype you up on it when you land it which some skaters are content with just that and if your not because you want to make it a paid living we got gate keepers in are community who just purely hate on that and call successfulskaters sell outs. Which we all know does not make sense because how else is a successful skater going to pay the successful skater's bills/needs if he or she does not skate for the money, to end it off with my 3rd reason why is gatekeepers i understand why that would make you not want to be part of our skateboarding community because they make the rest of us skaters who try to make it a better place for everyone look bad and ruin the vibe for everyone. Granted though i am not going to lie i would think you are soft if you let someone stop you from doing what you want to do no matter what it is but i know better to be sensitive to new comers to skateboarding but that is not common sense to gatekeepers.

I definitely don't think skateboarding is declining but it might be plateauing. Right now the skill level of skaters is the highest it has ever been, the way people skate is a bit different though - in the mid 2000s most skaters usually skated big rails and stair sets for their video parts, but now the creative side of skateboarding is trendy, which is especially evident by all the european skaters who do a lot of wallrides and slappys in manuals and things like that.
