    Riding with your knee inward like that will likely hinder your balance once you gain speed, but it will certainly cause strain and internal issues by forcing the knee sideways every push inevitably. The knee isn't designed to take side to side force/movements.
    The optimal way for balance to have your feet while pushing is the same position you'd have them for running, toes pointed TOWARD where you are going. Otherwise, you are putting unnecessary and unnatural strain on the knee and limiting your pushing potential by the awkward position. The motion to go from toes pointed to where you are pushing toward and back to your riding position should be only ONE fluid motion. Riding position should be shoulders aligned with the board, and feet with shoulders. Soulders should swing open and the feet should follow by turning to be pointed toward where you are rolling all in one motion, then a one motion return to shoulders and feet squared off with the width of the board. You can think of it like opening to push, and closing to ride.
    The pushing foot should also while pushing point towards where you are rolling. Think of pushing in skating like walking or running, you always want point your body where you are going when you take a step (push) that way, or the ergonomics on the body are wrong and can result in otherwise avoidable issues. Push, ride, push, ride, push push push, ride 🛹

      Yeah - I see where Marcio is coming from. I took a few heavy slams when new and learning to push and the board came in to towards my pushing leg and I had no way to counter balance. So I started riding as he suggested above (my own idea). Now my standing leg knee is not in a good way. And I'm trying to learn to push 'properly' - standing foot pointing forwards.

      Great info. As a newbie to skateboarding I was confused which way to point. Many teaching videos and online places like wikihow demonstrate the front foot off at a slight angle when pushing. My instinct is to have it straight as you mentioned.

    My favorite part is how he spends 2 minutes stressing never to push with your toes pointing forward, then proceeds to push with his toes forward.
    Because that's perfectly fine to do. Been doing it probably longer than this dude's been alive. (32 years)

  • @elaborat6314
    @elaborat6314 4 місяці тому +14

    This only applies when setting up for a trick. If you wanna push fast and long, your foot should be straight. Twisting your knee does not only make it harder to balance, it also puts unnecessary stress on the joint and it looks less casual.
    Look at pics of Gino Ianucci. His is often referred to as "the best push". If he pushes down the street, the foot is completely straight. If you wanna make distance, it's the way to go.

    This is the best video I have watched on the topic. He goes as far as explaining the physics of load distribution, center of gravity, biomechanics, vestibular systems and proprioception concepts, plus a great alternative technique for people having difficulties. I actually made progress using this method.
    As long as the internal femural rotation, Hips and torsal joint mobility is in good working order, this method is superb as an alternative.
    P.s No stress on my knee or foot because the whole leg and hips are slightly turning, not the knee joint. Unless you're stiff, go for it!❤

    @MattHalcyon i agree that this video's method can cause unnecessary strain. i only ever push with my front foot facing forward and never really have problems doing it like that. i had a session a couple weeks ago where i was going hard and my front leg was a bit sore afterwards. i'm pretty sure i was using bad technique with my riding, front leg being crooked and pushing hard with my back foot. a day or two later the soreness got worse in my front leg and foot, and i could barely walk that night. i'm sure it's something that can go away with some rest, although i'm not always the best at giving myself time to rest up lol. that's simply one problem i see happening with this video's method. people are free to ride their board however they like, there's no rules in skateboarding after all, but i would recommend against this method in the long run

  • @nooboard
    @nooboard 6 місяців тому +2

    It does not matter where you place your frontfoot if you can steer, keep balance and ride fast in that position. ;-) Even pushing mongo is only a question of style like the mallgrab is. The best skill is to be able to ride confident in all stances and directions no matter where exactly your feets are positioned.

    There is no right or wrong way to push. There is no right or wrong way to skate. Unless you're out there having a pissed off tantrum all the time then you're doing it wrong. If you're happy with what you doing, you're having a good time. You're doing it right. Don't let assholes like this. Tell you what you should or shouldn't do. This is coming from a 54-year-old man who started skating when he was 6 years old. Don't listen to these assholes who tell you what you can and cant do to have a good time on a skateboard

    Your video really made me take a good look at pushing a skateboard. I really liked it!! One thing I would like to add, while not taking anything away from your excellent instruction is throwing in a mongo push every other kick because over time you will fatigue your foot and ankle if you kick with the same foot every single time over the coarse of your(hopefully)long years in skateboarding. Also when you mongo push I would recommend having the middle of your back foot just over the rear bolts with that back foot facing forward. Like in your video I will start to push with my front foot over one front bolt but will mongo push with rear foot facing forward every other kick starting today. Gracias🛹👏

    saw title and thumbnail, so thought i'd check it out. is pretty much what i tell people. people keep most of their balance with their big toe and heel, and, as long as you can apply pressure on either side of the baseplate, you can leverage the board side to side for balance and turning using both forward/back and side to side muscles of the foot.
    foot pointed forward gives more natural body positioning for the lunge, allowing stronger pushes, but too far forward limits balance to toes only and weaker side to side ankle muscles. mongo pushing can shorten stride, because mongo forces the board in front of the body's center when you really step into the lunge of a push. not to mention the extra set up time.

    When you start you plant your feet too much, the trick in skateboarding is to be light on your feet and almost never in a "set" position only the best position for the time, place, activity, terrain, lighting, weather .. basically PRACTICE till your body just does what it has learnt to do, and not do, by getting hammered

      So far so good but in the first weeks I always thought that I bought a deck that's to small for me. ( Shoes 12 size, 1.88m tall, 100 Kilo )

    • @TC1Z2L3
      @TC1Z2L3 2 місяці тому

      I agree with you. I like having my foot straight while pushing. I just feel more squared up with the direction I'm going and with the kinesiology of my hips knees, ankles and feet. I also like the big front kick you mentioned. It looks cool, gets more speed and gets you further away from the noobs that barely feel comfortable taking their foot off the board to push. It really doesn't take 3 or 4 movements to adjust your front foot for a trick either. It takes a little more skill and balance to move your front foot those extra couple centemeters but it's totally worth it.

  • @RaKanMusik
    @RaKanMusik 3 місяці тому

    I'd argue the video is only wrong in application. You want to START toes forward like running as others have said. You can adjust your front foot when you are ADVANCED so you can steer while pushing without having to change to riding stance. You don't need the skill to start and it's better to strengthen your joints and muscles in the proper form FIRST then you will be able to handle and know the limits of angling your front foot for steering.
    If you can't push, adjust your front foot, then ride/trick you aren't even ready for the ollie or other maneuver. Get used to pushing, adjusting your feet, then riding comfortably FIRST. If you get that under you before moving on I promise you you'll have a better time with less risk of injuries.
