Warm ups are so useful to get more comfortable. I started skating a few weeks ago, and I just ride to a spot, even taking the longer way so I get more time in, then start working on a trick or two a the spot (Currently working on getting higher and faster ollies, also fs 180 no-comply - so fun.) Can't wait till this lock down ends, then I can go to a skate park and start working on transition.
Good explanation of a session. I skate the same. First roll around and warm up with low impact, then practice my Heelflip cause I can land them fairly regularly. Then move onto the stuff j want to learn with a bunch of already learnt tricks so that it doesn't became a session of not landing anything.
Ben . Thankyou for this video. I started skating 3 years ago at age 45 and have recently been really struggling mentally during sessions with progression . I’m finding that at the start of each session I’m struggling to hit the marks I did in the previous one and it’s only when I’m on about an hour in that I can and about 90 minutes in that I can try new things. It’s very reassuring to watch you skate in this video and know know that I’m not alone , I assumed that really good skaters just rocked up , smashed it up from the start and left . Stoked
Make videos. I suck at skateboarding but the videos serve two purposes. 1 to watch and learn from myself to improve my skating and 2 for accounyablity. The videos ensure i make that time and get out there and push myself. It adds to the skating. It doesn't take away from it.
My routine is slightly different but with the same idea. I got my routine from my mountain biking background. I start with the warm up, then move on to things that I’m working on but not quiet landing yet, then end with things I’m landing most of the time. In biking I warm up then do bigger jump lines and tricks and then end the day on medium jumps with stuff I’m confident on. I guess I do that because I know that near the end I’m tired and more likely to mess up. I also like ending the day/session feeling good about what I can do.
I really like this idea of structuring time. It is a more critical skill for those with limited time to skate. It is also a nice progression to build to learning new tricks. Nice video.
Dude thanks for your channel, I broke my ankle at 20 and have tried skating off and on since then. Now at 32 I finally feel I'm at a good progression point again. I don't care about my tec skill in comparison to others, I'm working on skating for me and growing in skating for my self. It also helps me not be a fat ass :- )
Please make a video on the falling techniques or mental things you do when falling. I wish I could fall like 7:17. Us big guys need your help. Besides safety gear, falling properly is so important.
I dont know if it can really be taught. It's just years of experience. Other than just learning to roll over the shoulder there isn't much else I could show. Honestly, falling is a crapshoot. It doesn't always work out as well as it did there.
One of the secrets for fs crooks that helped me out when I was initially learning them is to roll as close to the ledge and as parallel to the ledge as possible.
Hey Ben ! I just wanted to stop by and show you how much you have impacted me as a person and a fellow skater. First of all I've been skating now since I was 13 now 35 and with the wife and kids i haven't been able to get out n skate very much. I used to skate bigger drops and ledges and everything in between. but I broke my ankle in 3 places kick flipping a set and landed with my foot bent in. Since then I gave up the drops and went back to my favorite, technical skating trick in trick out. But I have had a lot of obstacles layed in my path that have greatly impacted my mentality with skating. First of all, my friends and brothers that I grew up skating with all no longer skate or moved to different states. The next big blocker I have is that I have issues just going out and skating for myself, i feel like if there isn't someone there to share in the enjoyment its really hard for me to get hyped up and make each session count, and go home feeling accomplished, and had actual fun. I also feel like i'm living my old best life... what I mean by that is that I have some pretty cool tech flat tricks, but being that I don't get out very much I find myself just trying my old bangers and doing what you said as your last part of a good session the progression part. So I will just try my hard tricks and fall over and over and just continue and end up leaving my weekend session feeling down and out as I only landed a few tricks, and nothing was consistent. I honestly just discovered your channel last night after a long shift at work, and seeing how you look at skateboarding and your advice has truly given me sooooooooo much confidence and I would love to build myself up with your amazing inspiration. Seeing someone my age able to just go out and skate for no one other than themselves is inspiring enough, but you touched on so many topics and different ways to approach a session, where if nothing else you never leave the warm up phase, or just have fun landing your trick over and over again to build up muscle memory and style. Seriously I cannot thank you enough, coming from someone who FELT like they were burnt out and could never get their tricks back, and definitely not progress in skating. You have given me a new lease on life and have shown this out of shape lover of the sport that I CAN go out and be magnificent and have fun skating again. You sir are my new idle and I want you to know, your teachings have forever changed me, and as soon as next week comes and Mothers day is behind us I will be taking your teaching to the skate park. Sincerely your friend Brian. Thanks a ton man !!!! please never stop !!! best content and most meaningful video collection I've watched in my entire time skating.
Hey Ben!! Try “ACE (low) bushings” and that riptide 96a WFB pivot cup with your thunders 149 .. both washers and it’s amazing! The barrel gives you that stability and is softer then the top come.. so it’s 91a-86a and they are great.. they will stick and you have to break them in from sticking but they are the best feeling.. I got the pivot cups because of your review. Because the pivot cups blow out every 8 months and the bones about the same.. only $8
I never noticed but my sessions are like this and that could be why my friends say i progress pretty fast. I always get a warm up, then some tricks to work on, then some pretty hard stuff(for me)
The more tricks I know the more it takes me time to go over them. Like a year ago my routine looked like this: 10 ollies 10 fs 180 10 rock to fakies 10 axel stalls. 20 minutes warm up done. Now I need like 2 hours to go over stuff and I'm too tired to work on new things xD I'm afraid that if I do not go through all my tricks Imma lose them.
I know this is irrelevant but I’ve been practicing my 50 50s for half a year and not once have I rolled up to the skatepark and do a nice 50 50 first try. Most of the time my front truck misses the coping and it slides out. Or for some reason my feet decide I won’t Ollie as high as I usually do. Does anybody have any tips??
I agree, however, unfortunately I can’t get that much time in without waking up at five in the morning. So I put in usually two to three hours on Saturdays and Sundays. I also try to not focus too heavily on one trick so that I can get a lot more done within that time. It has helped a lot... plus doing a little calisthenics when you can doesn’t hurt 😉
You are a source of inspiration, Mr. Ben Degros. I'm back to skate at 44 after 15 yr "hiatus", zero sport activity (stuff). Maybe I should record my sessions and document how I'm re-learning everyting from scratch from pushing to falling. People around telling me it's impossible to make that come back when I'm already on it, I feel like wtf, I just been in the skatepark. I understand frustration vs progression, it was nice seeing those slides to hflip again and again, some people will only show their clean cool looking "wins", far from reality yes (mini yoda spoke). Btw, gota tell younglings at local skatepark to stop calling me "sir" when they bring my deck and ask me if I'm alright. Rolling over the floor is for now my best trait, I'm quite the stuntman but it's the right thing to do instead of hitting floor hard :) I needed to write these notes somewhere, this video from April 2019 was the right place. Keep up with content. #neverRetreatNeverSurrender #niRetiradaNiRendicion (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Thanks for the insights Ben. Some gems in there like the 'special meter' which in real life really helps. Lately I've noticed that if I start my session by skating fast, just doing easier stuff that I have down, it gets me more stoked and I end up having a lot more energy and confidence during the rest of the session. At 40 yrs old, energy and stoke don't always come as easy as they did at 18 so it's important to find ways to get into that flow.
My session is 5-10 min. Warm up consisting of low nose slides, boardslides, Ollie’s, maybe an attempted heelflip or inward heelflip and then I push around and power slide some. Then I just skate and practice my lines and try to come up with new stuff to do In between other set trick routines.
why do you need someone to teach you how to warm up? its very simple. stretch and try tricks that you already have. if you only know how to do kickflips then do like 20 kickflips. after that move on to other stuff you wanna learn. you dont need a fancy park for anything.
I believe it’s very important to stretch. Specially at an older age. I’m 38 and my muscles and bones aren’t the same, haha. Do like 5-10 minutes of stretching then cruise around trying Ollies and trick you already know. Your body will feel a lot better 🤘🏽
@@antonionarciso7936 At that age it's actually better not to do static stretching. Dynamic stretches before your session are great and will give you more power
Ben, you explained what being a skateboarder is all about and what NEEDS to be understood. Some learn faster which is discouraging, but focus and consistent effort will reap the rewards.
Tried to skate a few hours ago and did a few tricks then left. I may go back and try again now that it isn't as bright out or as hot. I work nights so my eyes are very sensitive to light, sometimes it takes a half hour of skating for my eyes to be okay with that level of sunlight. My work schedule switches from nights to early mornings soon, so I have the opportunity of trying to go to be early and wake up at 3am to get to work. Not a nice schedule either, but if I can manage to go to bed early enough it should be healthier than what I have been doing for the last 3 years.(start work at 10:30PM and get off in the morning), lately I've really sucked at sleeping, hope I can get into a healthier routine so I can get back into skating a lot more.
@@bendegros Thanks. I went back when the sun was going down and had some fun. I guess I'm just nocturnal? Hoping for some progression and I think I generally skip the warmup part of a session and feel like if I start doing that and getting back to basics it would really help me out.
my routine is 10 kickflips on flat (in a row if possible) 10 tres on flat 3 kickflips off a ramp (bank) 3 shove its off a ramp 3 tres off a ramp (sometimes) basic 180s off of ramp 50-50 every flat ledge in the park 3 times warmed up so i do whatever but i HAVE TO land a clean tre flip, kickflip, pop shuv it in a line before i leave
Nino Monti it's just a regular deck tho 🤷♂️ Not that you're asking, but I've only been riding plan b black ice or everslick decks for the last two years. The slick decks really make a difference. They both slide different but the plan b decks are lighter and stiffer than a standard deck👌but the graphics suck, but I don't care. I also try to get the widest but shortest deck possible. You won't believe the amount of control you will get with a stubby board. On average it's an 8.3 wide 31 long. The shorter the deck the easier it is to do 360 flips and all 180 flips like backside/frontside flips. You should give them a try 👍
@@jorgevelez1809 how tall are u .. i just got back into skating and i messed up and got an 8.15 its so small .. not sure what to get I was thinking just going straight for an 8.5 .. im 6ft1 and size 11
Kit Sonne I'm 5, 11 size 12 shoes. I'm known to play around with different board sizes. I used to ride 8.5 up to 8.8, but right now I'm down to 8.3w 31"L. The bigger the board the easier all grinds and slides are for me, except back tails🤷♂️. The smaller the board the easier it is for me to learn new flip tricks, but I feel it's because the board is SHORTER 31" long. If your asking me what you should ride for now, I think you need a wide but short deck. Size 11 shoe needs some space for stability and short to help you execution flip tricks. You are tall so with the shorter deck will help with flicks because you don't have to drag as long to kick your foot out. Short decks spin around fast too, 360 flips just go. Since you are getting back into it I recommend thunder 151 hollow trucks. Thunder trucks are more forgiving for the casual skater. Thunder highs still feel low and even when loose they feel a little tight. This truck will without a doubt help you with you pop because of how stable it is. I'll see if I can find you some links for products. Keep in mind I don't care for brands I just like what works
Great skating as usual thanks . I have found that the warm up with basic tricks say landing 5 of each and some stretching in between sets a good foundation for the rest of the season, (everything stays crisp) and like you said the confidence that arises. Love your Saturday videos thanks.
I do this but usually for flatground, ill start with the tricks i have on lock for a warm up then, try to get other tricks more consistent then, try some tricks i havent landed.
I start by dropping in on a 3ft quarter, a 4ft quarter, a 5 ft quarter, and then the 6 ft quarter with 6in vert on it... then I partice doing bs axle on the 4ft for about 2 hours trying to get them clean and atleast 70% of the time... right now I'm at like maybe 3 out of 10 tries... i get tired long before i get them cleaner... then it's a full week before i can get on the board again... i just started back bj up again after 15 years... back then i did street, now I feel I'm too old and brittle to do the street skating... so transition and park skating it is for me...
I wish I could skate for 90 minutes a day, I can barely make it 15-20 before I feel like I'm going to pass out most days. I can't wait to move out of Florida.
I have developed a separate sesh from the actual sesh where I would practice a trick in all stances about 30 repeats or more per stance and I do this for about a week or two
My routine or warm ups are just basically Ollie’s Kick flips A little bit of Variel Kickflips Frontside 180 Little shuvs Fakie kickflip Little bit more fakie Then when I do my real stuff I do some treflips

This is a good video & a great way to look at progressing but what about Skateboarding everyday? Is it required? I know a rest day is good for the body & pro's skate almost every day but for the rest of us how would you go about Skating everyday & progressing?
I try to skate every day. Right now I am about 7 days straight. I take rest days as I need them. Just dont feel like I need one right now. That's the other thing about not skating too long is you aren't too sore the next day. There is nothing like daily skating to fuel progression.
Appreciate the progression shots Ben. Just started following you a month or so ago. 35, getting back into it with my 7 year old son now. Love the channel, inspirational. 💪🏼
Started skating again after 20 years. I'm 37 and I get 20 mins a day on my lunch break. I'm happy to be able to ollie knee height while moving again(when i can keep the board from turning frontside). I realized I need a taller setup thanks to your style of analyzing. Thanks for all the videos to keep an old guy going.
I hate warming up, but I'm so aware of how important this is. I usually do some easy ledge tricks, some Ollie 180s, halfcabs, stuff like that. I still think my warm ups are too weak though, because I'm always in so much pain the following three days after my session. That's why I don't skate every day.
@@saturdaymorning329 I'm gonna get some orthopedic insoles too, I've been having some heel bruises due the impact. I should mention that as I progress, I'm slamming more often and more "heavily" if you will. Thanks for the tip, man, I appreciate it.

"Mike Ridgeback here, impact talent"
Great playlist. I've binged watched through half a dozen.
Good explanation of a session. I skate the same. First roll around and warm up with low impact, then practice my Heelflip cause I can land them fairly regularly. Then move onto the stuff j want to learn with a bunch of already learnt tricks so that it doesn't became a session of not landing anything.
Pretty good video very nice for all levels of skating
Stoked
Nice routine to try thanks! Started skating again at 31 after a 6 year break. Great routine to get leg strength back to par.
Excellent advice as usual Ben. Great post.
Guru Degros dropping some straight knowledge on us. I can totally relate to this whole video. This inspires me to make my own videos
Make videos. I suck at skateboarding but the videos serve two purposes. 1 to watch and learn from myself to improve my skating and 2 for accounyablity. The videos ensure i make that time and get out there and push myself. It adds to the skating. It doesn't take away from it.
@@AdventuresInSkateboarding ordered a tripod so hopefully i make something
Nice video.
I feel like this is how all of my sessions are structured, but I'd never actually thought about it before. Interesting.
It doesn't always work out as well as it did there.
awesome vid
great video usually i do 20 min of riding around and ollies then im all warmed up for every thing else
One of the secrets for fs crooks that helped me out when I was initially learning them is to roll as close to the ledge and as parallel to the ledge as possible.
Heading to my local once this videos watched!
I always get a warm up, then some tricks to work on, then some pretty hard stuff(for me)
Well, I will consider that once I am able to do tricks
your warm up looks like a pro sesh to me
great videos dude, I love when people catch their tricks on air
The more tricks I know the more it takes me time to go over them. Like a year ago my routine looked like this:
10 ollies
10 fs 180
10 rock to fakies
10 axel stalls.
20 minutes warm up done.
Now I need like 2 hours to go over stuff and I'm too tired to work on new things xD I'm afraid that if I do not go through all my tricks Imma lose them.
Love it man!
Love it!
Gotta try this when I’m doing nightshifts. Good video!
7:18 i instinctively put my foot out to stop the board from racking my shin and stubbed my toe on the wall under my computer desk
Soccer is football in every other country, than Canada and USA too.
Fully Sweet video Ben, u fuckin inspiring..too bad my injured knee's not fully healed yet. cant skate much..keep it up OG
I think your videos are so good because we can see you miss tricks, like everyone else.....real, pure skateboarding.....
Yo on Braille's website you can punch in all the tricksyou land and give you a rank. I'd like to know your ranking.
ok, ok i GOT it! stop yelling at me Ben!
I skate all the time but my friends only skate like once a week
Rolling over the floor is for now my best trait, I'm quite the stuntman but it's the right thing to do instead of hitting floor hard :)
I needed to write these notes somewhere, this video from April 2019 was the right place.
Keep up with content. #neverRetreatNeverSurrender #niRetiradaNiRendicion
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Awesome to see your process. I feel like if I added a bit more structure to my session like this I could progress faster 👍 cheers!
Then I just skate and practice my lines and try to come up with new stuff to do
In between other set trick routines.
I really like this
This was great. :)
dude not everyone has such a great park for warm up. you should teach how to warm up on flat so that everyone could do it
why do you need someone to teach you how to warm up? its very simple. stretch and try tricks that you already have. if you only know how to do kickflips then do like 20 kickflips. after that move on to other stuff you wanna learn. you dont need a fancy park for anything.
@@ToniLovesSkateboarding thanks. I haven't try to warm up before watching this video but its really good for progress
I believe it’s very important to stretch. Specially at an older age. I’m 38 and my muscles and bones aren’t the same, haha. Do like 5-10 minutes of stretching then cruise around trying Ollies and trick you already know. Your body will feel a lot better 🤘🏽
@@ToniLovesSkateboarding i'm 15 ahahah but stretching is meant for everyone
@@antonionarciso7936 At that age it's actually better not to do static stretching. Dynamic stretches before your session are great and will give you more power
my session goes more like, ollie x100 frontside 180 practice//shuv it practice..
Yes i am a beginner
Keep at it, get it on lock so other tricks come better. You’re getting comfortable with the basics, you won’t lose it as you progress
Ben, you explained what being a skateboarder is all about and what NEEDS to be understood. Some learn faster which is discouraging, but focus and consistent effort will reap the rewards.
That park lots great
Tried to skate a few hours ago and did a few tricks then left.
I hope so too. I was never able to do night shift. I am a fussy sleeper as it is.
@@bendegros Thanks. I went back when the sun was going down and had some fun. I guess I'm just nocturnal? Hoping for some progression and I think I generally skip the warmup part of a session and feel like if I start doing that and getting back to basics it would really help me out.
my routine is
10 kickflips on flat (in a row if possible)
10 tres on flat
3 kickflips off a ramp (bank)
3 shove its off a ramp
3 tres off a ramp (sometimes)
basic 180s off of ramp
50-50 every flat ledge in the park 3 times
warmed up so i do whatever
but i HAVE TO land a clean tre flip, kickflip, pop shuv it in a line before i leave
Love that Girl Diamond deck 🤘🏻 cant wait for the review 🙏🏻
I am riding one too. It is pretty nice
Nino Monti it's just a regular deck tho 🤷♂️
Not that you're asking, but
I've only been riding plan b black ice or everslick decks for the last two years.

I like your videos
that's all
Ben, how come every park you go to I'd empty 😂. You kill it everywhere
"they help get my balance centered" you are also becoming a spiritual guru Ben D
That is the entire reason i skate. Keeps me balanced for the work week.
@@emmanuel6702 agree.
I wish I could skate for 90 minutes a day, I can barely make it 15-20 before I feel like I'm going to pass out most days. I can't wait to move out of Florida.
I have developed a separate sesh from the actual sesh where I would practice a trick in all stances about 30 repeats or more per stance and I do this for about a week or two
How has this been going for you?
@@LiveLoveSour it helps when I'm consistent
FULL VIDEO PART!!!
Good stuff from another 30 something yr old dude 👌🏼
I need a 4 hour session
My routine or warm ups are just basically
Ollie’s
Kick flips
A little bit of Variel Kickflips
Frontside 180
Little shuvs
Fakie kickflip
Little bit more fakie
Then when I do my real stuff I do some treflips
My Routine is cruise around a bit, try ollies, fail, repeat, get 5cm off the ground, be happy, try harder, repeat lol
Awesome Awesome AWESOME WORK BROTHER!!! This was Great! I'm 31 yrs old N' still skating every day! I still Love it!
And if you, or anyone else would like, I make Skateboarding Vlogs myself. It'd be Awesome if y'all could check em out. I work extremely hard putting them together.
Thank you all! And keep up the great work bro!
GJ big ben!
Hey Ben ! Do you think you can pick a specific day where you can meet up and skate with fans if we come visit ?
you are great!
Dude why aren't you sponsored yet you're awsome bro🙏🙏✊
Fuck yea Ben FS heel flips for ya boy!!!
I like when the camera gets knocked down, realistic skating as a viewer
The board always finds the camera, it is actual pretty amazing the angles and distances a board will travel from to find the camera.
You’re the fucking best much love from nyc !!💚🔥
Appreciate the progression shots Ben. Just started following you a month or so ago. 35, getting back into it with my 7 year old son now. Love the channel, inspirational. 💪🏼
Thanks Matt!
I do the same kind of routine, same thing at boxing and at rollerblading because my body cant ride or do something good when im cold.
Can you do this same video for begginers lol
I like this
Nah we call that shit soccer in Australia as well.
Hate to say it but Tylenol before your session will do wonders for the after, and a banana for the muscle burn.
@@saturdaymorning329 I'm gonna get some orthopedic insoles too, I've been having some heel bruises due the impact. I should mention that as I progress, I'm slamming more often and more "heavily" if you will. Thanks for the tip, man, I appreciate it.
love all your stuff man! everyone subcribe
Much love Ben
Thanks Ben, I’ve been struggling with progress and this sounds like a solid plan
