18:15 I see a lot of comments about how Mr. Hawk's so down to earth and humble. I think in that moment of the video he explains perfectly the reason for that.
I love how humble Tony is. He doesn't see himself as the greatest skateboarder, he admits his flaws and his mess ups, and he's not ashamed of it. He has humility and I absolutely respect him for that. This is why he so goated, he's legendary for what he's accomplished, but he has no ego.
It helps when hes best friends with rodney mullen. It helps you keep grounded when you know someone who invented the basis for all modern freestyle tricks.
I still remember the day he first landed the 900. I was at summer camp with no tv or anything (available to the campers at least) and within 20 minutes of him landing it, the counselors announced it on the loud speaker and we all went absolutely nuts for that whole afternoon. Such an underrated sports moment.
Some real good times around that time. Moments like these rarely happen anymore with all this instant access anywhere you want with smartphones. The reaction after the announcement must have been unforgettable
3 things this video taught me: 1. If UA-cam had been around when I tried skateboarding as a kid, I might have been able to ollie after watching the slowmo in this video, and I wouldn't have given up so fast. 2. Tony Hawk cannot do every trick in the book. I had literally no idea. I thought he was superman on a skateboard. 3. He's a really humble dude and I would like to be his friend. Ok, I already knew that one, but it needed saying again.
He literally invented/popularize 16 out of 21 tricks mentioned, until the tricks got ridiculously risky (he was considerably old even when he did 900, it is stupid to go for higher momentum tricks unless you want to be crippled). The ones above 900 are performed by a lot younger skaters, because it was a lot easier for them to push the envelope further. He is indeed a national treasure :)
Tony Hawk is the only celebrity that I'd absolutely love to meet. I don't skate, (tried to, it didn't take) but the culture, the music, the games, the "fashion" (still wear skate shoes) were such a huge part of my life and everybody I know my age. Precisely because I never had the ability for skate boarding, or the discipline/perseverance I'm in awe of those that can do it well. Tony Hawk for president!
@@shishi1079 I agree - these days!!! Tony is such a great role model for the sport. He tells you that the pop shove it is a very beginner trick, and then shows video of himself messing it up. Good reminder that you will never be perfect, because even Tony Hawk misses kickflips sometimes
Tony Hawk blows my mind. Many teenagers cannot do any of these tricks, and most can't even dream of doing any of the harder ones, but he's casually killing it at age 51.
I mean it's not that unbelievable, the man is literally one of the greatest skateboarders of all time and he's still very physically active. Really good editing of the video. Especially the counting of the spins - seeing "okay, this is 180 and now it's 360" was very useful.
I think it was the Varial 720 where the skater does a 720 but the board does a 900.
I had to count the board spin myself because that just seems beyond ridiculous for that level of complexity.

3 things this video taught me:

I mean no one can do every trick invented theres too many. Hes a legend for sure but in transition skating.
