I quit heading into college. There were no skateparks and I honestly was so removed from my high school skate friends. Not to mention the reality that sponsorships were never going to happen despite reaching a good level. This past week, 14 years later, I went skating at a local park and it felt amazing. I’m just having fun and getting a workout in, but this is how I should’ve utilized skating all along.

Skated for 10 years. Hard. Loved every minute of it. Got a local shop sponsor & everything. For me my passion for art & drawing started to take over, I would skate all day & draw all night. Got a tattoo apprenticeship & started to skate less than I had before, studying tattooing had taken over. Still skated & felt a deep connection to it. Blew my back out, bad. While skating. Nerve damage bad. Was seeing multiple doctors a week with such severe sciatica I didn’t walk more than a block for 2 years. All while learning to tattoo full time. I was honestly depressed for a while about it after 2 years not skating I felt so foreign to it and this thing I loved so deeply felt ripped from me. It was a blessing in disguise in some ways cause it forced me to put all my focus into tattooing. These days I still skate, definitely not as much as I’d like to & find myself going hard for a period skating a lot than drifting away for a while. But I always find my way back & it truly centres me. Something I hold onto deeply is if you spend as much time doing something as we do skateboarding. It will never leave you, the time invested can’t be undone. Even when I couldn’t skate for those years I still would be looking for spots as I drove. Skateboarding changes for a lot of us as we age but we will never be any less of skateboarders. Every trick you ever landed you have landed, you know how it feels. Your peak may be your peak but you still achieved it. I love skateboarding I always will & to any of my fellow injured skaters out there who have to take it easier these days, just remember if you still roll around with shoes and a board in your car. The fire for skating is still deep in your heart. 😊

Skateboarding was my escape from an abusive home life. I started in 98/99 (5th grade) and got very into it almost right away. Skated all through middle school and high school, and a few years after. Some of the best memories and good times for me were skating with my friends. What caused me to quit was depression, and loss of contact with people who skate. I grew up skating in San Jose, CA. A very inspiring place to skate. There were a lot of skaters, it felt like such a huge community of skateboarders there. When I was 16 we moved of that abusive situation to Washington. That’s where the depression started, being away from all of my friends, constant rain, and not having anyone to skate with. There were only 2 or 3 kids at my new high school who skated. I think after trying to make it work for 2-3 years in my new home state I kinda just finally gave up and felt defeated. That was 2008/09. I did attempt to get back into it a few
Times since then and it didn’t stick because of the weather just making it too hard. BUT, I’m at it again and I’m really feeling it right now. Watching old skate videos I used to love like Fulfill the Dream, Welcome to Hell, Dying to Live, Yeah Right, Menikmati etc and man it’s got me excited again for the first time in over a decade. I’ve been able to get almost all of my tricks back, and am just having such a good time. Long comment I know, but it just feels good to put it out there. Thanks for your content John, and I hope this video inspires people to pick up skateboarding again. It’s truly a special hobby.

I didn’t skate for a about 2-3 years because I fell into benzo an opioid addiction because I was hit by a truck and used them to “cope” with the pain along with depression and overtime it affected me way worse than it would’ve if I never did them, eventually I put them down cold turkey (I don’t suggest cold turkey) but I put it down because I loved the natural high from skating more than I could ever love the high drugs gave me it also made me sad seeing my board up against the wall everyday knowing I wasn’t able to function properly on it while taking those drugs, overall sense I’ve been sober I’ve been skating everyday and it gives me such more fulfillment than those drugs could ever , I almost threw my passion for it out the window for drugs and I’m glad I didn’t,
I’m glad I found the natural dopamine rush from skating to be more addicting than the drugs , I would’ve been miserable for continuing years just knowing I thrown my passion and love for skating out the window, it was well worth putting myself through hell and withdrawals /cravings just to be back on my board ,now I’m at the point I wouldn’t give up skating for anything, my doctor still prescribes me pills but I just can’t bring myself to take them anymore I just throw them in my closet because at the end of the day it will never make me happier than stepping on my board and learning new tricks

Just popped up on my feed today. For myself I skated for 10 years and loved it. I still watch and following skating and still support it even though I do not skate anymore. About 3 years into skating I was doing good then I started to hurt myself all the time. When i would heal up it was like starting over again and a constant repeat instead of progression. I still loved it but it started to mess with me mentally because I would get hurt so bad. I would second guess myself or lack confidence to try tricks I used to be able to do. Also a big part was my original group of friends have moved on or passed away and I realized those friendships were a big part of skating for me. It just was not the same with the younger generation. Near the end my good friend moved back to florida and we skated every day we could. I skated alone a lot through the years but it was not as fun skating alone anymore. I set out to learn a lot of my harder tricks and when i was skating really good again I felt like I got everything out of skating i wanted and left on a high note. Those were some of the best years of my life for sure and those memories. Also getting older you do not get to skate as much since life gets in the way with a full time job and whatnot and for myself I needed to skate all of the time to maintain myself and skating once a week was not cutting it and bummed me out also.

1:58 being a scooter kid that loves skating culture, this little tidbit made me smile. A lot of the other skaters I meet at parks will say scootering is easy because they can tailwhip and 360, but that'd be a lot like me saying skating is easy because I can ollie. Everything can look easy if all you're doing is the easiest parts of it, but everything has a learning curve to it. Skating just happens to be one of those sports where, from the outside looking in, you won't look impressive until you're actually doing something that in the grand scheme of the sport is impressive.

I would say that at least 40% of skaters get into skating because they are dealing with something/things that are stressful in their lives. That makes sense. Skating is about being balanced in mind and body. It's both technical and creative, and the exercise and rewards relieve stress. It allows them to clear their minds and just skate!

Last straw was when I dislocated my shoulder snowboarding and I incidentally got my first guitar amplifier two days after that as a christmas present. I focused on music stuff for years after that. Along the years I tried different new hobbies, but nothing felt right. For many years I thought if it's too late to start again, but one summer I decided to give it a try. When I took a break from skating aggressively for a few years I still rode near everyday. I spend a lot of time at the park these days and have progressed more. Okay, I am a whole new category at the end of the spectrum of this 'Young Persons Sport'. I started skateboarding for the very first time in my life at 57 in 2019. Last year in the springtime after a small injury I lost all interest in skateboarding, as I will not ever go past the level of alltime beginner. Weeks go by without progression and I should be happy that maintaining the level I have equals success. 6 months later I found my love for skateboarding again with the help of an amazing teacher. All my goals are in reach, but without a timeframe. Some days I am on a roll and other days my body won't cooperate. But the frustration about my level has gone. Skateboarding unwinds me like no other sport has done for me, excites me to no end and I am totally zen afterwards with a big smile on my face. That triple state of mind I don't need to seek, it happens automatically. I am addicted to skateboarding and living proof that you don't need a certain level for that, nor a young age.

Just 5 minutes ago I landed a crook that I'm happy with (crooks are one of my dream tricks) I live in a place with almost no skaters so I skate by myself. But I still skate cause I know the feeling of progression. Thanks for your videos

I've been skating like 25 years, I'm 34. I've always had gross hardflips that I can't catch. Today I was at the skatepark with some friends trying hardflips and one of them, a younger guy who hasn't been skating long, was being a little shit about how he can hardflip good and I can't. He was really getting under my skin and I focused my board for the first time in a long time. It was still in good condition, I felt so stupid. Then he made a comment about my age and I just lost it on him, called him an asshole, didn't accept his apology, kept berating him, calling him stupid, then left without saying bye to anyone. I think it's time for me to quit. It doesn't bring me any fulfillment, at this point I only do it as a form of cardio, and there are definitely better ways to get cardio that are less damaging to your body. All the relationships I've formed from skating have been shallow. I'm just over it. I don't know where else to trauma dump.

Another reason I believe can be when starting up again later in life e.g. over 30s like myself. Many people can have very sedentary jobs in offices like myself. You end up very...very tight in the hip area and stability muscles become unused and weak. I've just recently tried picking back up skateboarding after approx. 14-15 years. My hip flexors and ham strings are so tight from just pushing around on the board again. Not planning to give up, it just inspired me more that i need to do it as there is many muscles unused. Thinking of watching/ following a youtuber that does yoga or stretching 1-2 days per week.
Another big reason, especially Adults. Is the threat of injury. We are not teens anymore where you can just be at home, many need to work due to casual employment, then there is the medical bills too.
To slightly elevate this, I have a helmet and will be buying wrist, Elbow and knee pads. You don't care how you look when you mature, because you need to work.
Anyone in the same boat as me, don't give up. Your muscles being sore is a good indicator you're not doing enough or using those muscle. Planning to do a stretch routine on the hip area once per week and possibly once per week a full body yoga session off UA-cam. After a few weeks ill try add in some body weight leg exercises like squats, Lunges and deadlift.
I regret that I stopped skating, I am unsure of an exact reason I did.

I don't think "quit" is the right terminology, at least not for me. I'll never quit skating, that's the beauty of it. Like hey you wanna take a year off to explore underwater basket weaving and "find yourself"? I personally wouldn't recommend it but hey if you decide that's not for you, skateboarding will still be waiting for you when you return. I've skated DRASTICALLY different intensities over the course of the last 16 years but NOTHING would make me say I "quit" skateboarding.

My problem is that I teach my friends how to skate, how to ollie, then how to kick-flip then fakie ollie or fakie kick-flip, I do these things and then next time I skat with them they have progressed so much they are better than me I ever could get to and they got there in 1 month and it would take me 1 year. So I lose motivation because I know I can’t get as good as them even though I am the one who taught them in the first place.

While this is true, I promise you there are breakthroughs along with the plateaus.
Some sessions you're just raising the small percentages of success with some tricks, without really noticing, then some sessions it feels like "all of a sudden it just clicked!" But you don't factor in all of the attempts that led up to that moment even though you weren't landing it before.

I started at 15 and stopped at 22. I was on the board and suddenly a feeling came like ''I don't belong anymore''. It was so real that I handed my skateboard to the kid skating next to me saying ''here is a present for you, I quit''. I didn't even hesitate. I guess the general ambiance of skateboarding scene had sth to do with this. Some people (not all of them) doing drugs etc. Anyways, I still watch skating videos because some part of me still enjoys it, but as a 41 years old man who has already been through a lot, I dont plan on returning back.

Drugs and alcohol… I was really progressing and it reached a point where all we wanted to do was party and skating took the backseat. Eventually got to the point where none of us skated anymore.
After struggling with alcoholism for the majority of my life I got back on the board and been skating consistently for the last 3 years and no better feeling, Sober since 2019 and wishing I would have had skating in my life all this time and not alcohol. Skateboarding is my therapy now, So much fun, And great cardio!!!

Injuries is a big factor to why most people I grew up skating with stopped besides life commitments etc. Risk vs reward became too great for some, and others legit have injuries that persists to this day.
Make sure to put time into learning how to fall (tons of vids about this on UA-cam) and do not try tricks too high above your skill ceiling at the current time. You can always come back to a trick later once you have more experience, but you can't get back the months of physio therapy and similar for being too hungry wanting to land something you're not really ready for yet.

By the end of it I was joining the military. Haven't had much time for it for the past couple years. But I still have my board and live off base now so I think I want to get back into it. Just sucks because now that I'm in the military I'm very conscience of potentially hurting myself so I have to take everything slow and carefully. Probably gonna stick with ledges and flat bars. At least for now, no more sending my body down gaps lol
