      There was also the time several Base Jabbers were used to evacuate the crew of the Sudori before it was destroyed. Though I wonder how many extra people can the Base Jabber, or the Dodai Kais, carry without that mounted container. As I am sure there where a couple hundred or so crew onboard the Sudori.

    I think the Pickup Truck utility extends to something very important, too: Reinforcing the front line. A squad of manned SFS can quickly sortie a number of Mobile Suit teams that may be in suits that don't have the best time in their environment, or need to conserve their own energy for combat that they can't waste getting there. On top of the resupply truck allowing one to fall back, get ammo or energy cels, come back and act as a supply line. The problem is it's also a major target. But if they're looking up, they're not looking at the enemy in front of them.

    I appreciate the advancements that Unicorn introduced for sub-flight systems by effectively removing them in favor of dual-purpose machines that could be carriers and then flip to being combat machines in the ReZEL and Anksha. Saves space in the battleships/carriers/transports too.

    • @scottwrathfon9872
      @scottwrathfon9872 2 роки тому +4

      And those were actually made that way on purpose.
      The Federation was in a period where they had to disarm and lower the amount of weapons they had, so having suits double as sub flight systems allowed them to cheat a little bit by having the mobile suits - definitely the more important of the two - be able to function as both, and then go into full combat after a different suit hitched a ride.

    Touch Controls: I think Gundam Unicorn showed that communication through hands was a primary way of controling devices. More specifically when the Unicorn was taking a Sleeves gattling gun and had to wait till the drivers installed before he could use it. So it makes sense that a MS could controler a Base Jabber that way.

    How many Mobile Suits were in the Zeta project? There are of course the Zeta Gundam representing Zeta, the Rick Dias for Gamma, the Double Zeta for Theta, etc. But what about Alpha, Beta, and other skipped letters. Also are suits like the Nu and Xi Gundams also part of the Project, or did they just have coincidental names?

    • @MaverDick12
      @MaverDick12 2 роки тому +1

      If my memory serves correctly there were no Alpha and Beta Gundams since Rick Dias gets its name from Gundariam Gamma. So technically Gundariam Alpha and Beta represent those letters in the Zeta series. For the other skipped letters I believe they are mostly covered in MSV and other spinoff material.

      I checked the wiki for it so here should be all of it.
      Hyaku-Shiki is built upon the original plans of the Delta Gundam, which was never made due to simulations failures.
      Eta Gundam is officially known as the Z Rapier I and was from a MSV like book called Gundam Wars I: Project Z and data was used for the mass produced Zetas.
      Iota Gundam is the S Gundam from Gundam Sentinal
      Kappa Gundam is from another hobby magazine called Original Gundam Story: Inner Gundam Space of Ageta and is like a weird hybrid of the MK-II and Psycho Gundam with a gattai
      And the Lambda Gundam is mentioned to exist in Sentinal but it's only appearance is in an SD Gundam game
      After Kappa they stop considering part of the Zeta Project but continue the naming scheme
      Mu Gundam is a prototype of the Nu from the Mobile Suit Gundam: Advanced Operation game
      I think that's all of it

    now, this gets me thinking, since Base Jabbers and Dodai Kais were meant to specifically carry mobile suits, how the heck were the Zeta Gundam and Delta Plus also able to do so. Surely, being mobile suits themselves, they'd either have little to no room to accommodate for any sort of suspension system nor would it be easy to have it work as such, although this may be mitigated in that there would be two pilots involved anyway

    In the same vein that they can be used as "Pickup Trucks" They can also be used for just general transportation of suits around. Given that they're significantly faster, at least in atmosphere than a lot of suits, they can be used to transport around suits much more efficiently, particularly when a larger ship to carry them is unavalible or simply considered excessive for the task at hand.

    Hmmm... You know another use I saw with SFS was the Doubey and Catsith from G-Reco. As the Catsith was already flight capable but I guess the Doubey carried the Catsiths to give the mobile suits a longer operation time when they arrived forcombat. Also I loved the whole thing where we saw the Catsiths launch from the Doubeys. Instead of jumping off or just stepping off the SFS the Catsiths are launched backwards from the Doubey where their wings are then extended and now able to fly on their own. I guess that is easier, stress-wise, on the Doubeys. Also in G-Reco we have seen the SFS in there saving the pilot of their partner mobile suit a couple of times after they bail out of their machine. The most notable of course being when Mask did it sometime early in the series. Though I am sure there were a couple of other times that happened. Also in G-Reco we got the SFS being used to carry cargo to resupply a ship, mostly seen when we first get introduced to Gusion, Aida's father.

    I imagine how the Base Jabber can deal with the mass of Mobile Suits is roughly similar to the way the whole Core Block system worked. Having several massive machines that are moving independently from one another be programmed to synchronize their actions to the extent that they can effectively dock into one another and merge into one unit without crashing or breaking horribly is a more complex engineering problem than what the Base Jabber has to deal with.

      That is actually the reason the spacebound SFS like the Getta and the Shackles, later the Space Base Jabber, were developed. They give their assigned mobile suit, or mobile suits in some cases, extended operational time. Unlike the ones used on Earth which give their assigned mobile suit, again mobile suits, the ability to fly through the air. At least till the introduction of dedicated mobile suit flight system like the Minovsky Flight System and the Beam Rotors of Victory Gundam. Speaking of which the spacebound SFS can even be given its own extended operational time by the attachment of boosters which are seen with the Type 89 and Type 94 Jabbers. Later on in UC we really do not see anymore Spacebound SFS outside of dedicated support craft for mobile suits, that maybe, are thanks to improvements in thrusters and the fuel they use.

    Great video. I just wanted to point out that I think the beam rotors on alot of the BESPA MS are considered sub flight systems even if they are much smaller and more integrated into the MS far better. If you do a follow up video it could be worth mentioning this fact as it's pretty important to those mobile suits' ability to fly when not in mobile armor mode

    Maybe you will answer this when Psyco Gundam Development comes out. With Four's fate being tied to the Psyco Gundam with the combat system, if it was destroyed without her being in it, how do you feel Four's mind and body would have reacted and could AEUG scientists possibly have helped her, especially in space.

      If there were any AEUG scientists assigned to the task at the time I think they would’ve studied her reaction and the results briefly just to gather data but I don’t imagine they care much about how she came out of it.
      The AE in AEUG stands for Anaheim Electronics after all. They don’t sell mentally healthy young women. Just fightin’ robots.

    Another thing to keep in mind about post OYW stuff is that the use of Minovski particles were massively regulated in both space and nearly banned for use on Earth as it left rather large areas dead zones for a lot of military as well as civilian tech. So in later years the need for touch or hard connections for military hard ware may have shifted from the days when everyone was yeeting Minovski weapons all over the place. It's not so bad in space as they just keep spreading out lessening their affects but on Earth they tend to hang out where they are deployed causing the issues which led to it being banned for use on Earth. ...Insanely realistic actually as after the first use of the Nuke in WW2 the rules for using them became a thing and are so bonkers today it's rather pointless to pursue them as well as all the new ways to counter them. Either way interesting point of discussion.

    Sub-Flight systems are all about adding tactical flexibility to the already powerful mobile suit. In atmosphere it seems to be about deployment speed and range as a secondary. Sure you could toss you MS in a transport aircraft of some sort but then they have to deploy from that aircraft and in that process they're vulnerable and lose flexibility as they're no longer, you know... flying. In space it's almost all about deployment range. By itself a MS has to burn its limited supply of fuel to get where it needs to go reducing the amount it has for combat and the trip home. This added range also gives the possibility of conducting off-axis attacks again adding to tactical flexibility. My personal conclusion is that sub-flight systems are the Gundam equivalent of attaching external fuel tanks to a F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and heck it's even better you can slap a gun/missiles on it too or turn it into a bomb itself.

      Real world reason is that beefy robot look cool sell models well.
      In universe reason is typically a misunderstanding from the big wigs about the balance between high mobility and the amount of armour, traditionally seeing armor more important than mobility, especially considering early oyw formations and tactics that they were used to.
      In some cases it's stated that the engineers assume that because it has mobility to spare, opt to add additional armour.

    In Mid-Late UC I'm still surprised Sub-Flight Systems still exist. in Hathaway there's the Federation's BJ-K232 Kessaria the Gustav Karl has, and Mafty's Galcezon for the Messers. Seems like both are manned units as well. Then in Victory there's the CS-H926 Setter H926 which honestly looks like the most practical/secure Sub-Flight System that was built to hold two and can still fire if needed. I hesitate to call the Einerad one, lol.

    • @robertdrexel2043
      @robertdrexel2043 Рік тому

      Shrug. I do believe that the two Hathaway SFS Type are not really dedicated mobile suit carrier vehicles but actual support craft for their assigned mobile suits. Similar to these early type of SFS like the original Dodai and the G-Fighter, as seen in 0079 Manga and other offshoots. As in the movie we see the Messers and the Gustav's actually not fighting on the SFS themselves but actually fighting in mid air. In fact. The Messers looked to be designed to fight in mid air. Meanwhile, the Settler seen in Victory Gundam I am sure would have been an older design used by the Federation and only used by the League Militaire. It is only in Victory that we started getting the dedicated mobile suit flight systems becoming a thing. With the Minovsky Flight System for the LM, and the Beam Rotors for BESPA. So SFS are still useful while on Earth. I do not think we get anymore Spacebound SFS during this timeframe thanks to the improvements in thruster design and thruster fuels.

    Question of the week request: Could you please clarify how propulsion works in the Universal Century?
    For spacecraft and mobile suits, my understanding is that they use ion thrusters. The onboard fusion reactor accelerates reaction mass and this results in thrust. We know that this doesn't work well under full gravity; the Gundam is the best mech of its day and it can just about jump, hence the need for subflight systems.
    Separately, we know that that aircraft can operate successfully in atmosphere and under gravity, from the Core Fighters and Dopps all the way to the Gunperry and Garuda. How do these work, then? It must be a different technology, while at the same time they don't seem to use wings for aerodynamic lift. The base jabbers are flying bricks, for instance.
    To add to that, I've long been curious about Zeon's underwater propulsion tech. Some sort of magnetohydrodynamic thing, I assume.
    And lastly, the White Base's jeep, as well as the lunar vehicle used for Dr Minovsky's exfiltration seem to have some sort of... repulsor deal going on?
    Obviously, it's because "wow, cool mecha" but any creative rationalisations would be appreciated.
    Thank you!

    What it is short range Wi-Fi like a Bluetooth if you leave your Bluetooth in your room and then go to the kitchen you might not have the best service depending on what you use. so if it's connected to the flight system it uses Wi-Fi in order to speak to the plane to do what it needs to do and more disconnects autopilot kicks in and the last command it had it continues either to stay by the pilot or head back home.

    I have a question:
    What is a movable frame? (Note: Explain this as though I know nothing about Gundam because I can’t wrap my head around the difference between a MS that has it vs one that doesn’t)

    • @granmastersword
      @granmastersword 2 роки тому +1

      essentially it's a type of frame that has the important electronics and some armor integrated on it.
      Old mobile suits had a layer like construction (electronics inside the frame and armor on the frame), which made maintenance easier, but in turn made them heavier.
      The movable frame has the important components already a part of it, reducing weight as well as making it possible to make mobile suits smaller.
      In layman's terms, a robot skeleton with the important stuff being part of it rather than being put inside or on top of it
