  • Skullz reacts to Lipan Conjuring, Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann), and Rosetta Stoned by Tool for the first time
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

A really funny story about this song:
When this album came out, I was able to listen to the ENTIRE album much earlier than most people. I got to this song, and I was like, “wtf is this song?!?” An internet friend asked me about the album, and I said something like, “oh it’s freaking great!! Although, there’s 1 song that’s very difficult to even describe.” He was like, “why’s that?!?” And I couldn’t really answer him other than to say, “it’s really unlike ANY of their others.” He went on to say, “but WHY though?!? Did they let Danny sing or something?!?” To that, I simply said, “I’m not 100% sure that they didn’t. 🤷‍♂️”

Blame Hoffman, the founder of LSD for the "lost" akashic keys that unlock the hidden truth of the universe revealed to him. The keys he had but.... forgot or "lost".
Rosetta Stone was a legend/map/key decoding all languages. Rosetta Stoned is a super fun and clever play on words. I love this triad of tracks. Rosetta Stoned is a fun one to just blast and listen to. Love it 😀

-The Rosetta Stone was an artifact that allowed ancient languages to be translated.
    -Stoned as in getting high.
-Stoned as in killed by having heavy stones thrown at you.
The narrator was given an important message, but was nearly killed by it, and now remembers nothing.

I'm not joking when I say I've been waiting for you to react to this collection of songs ever since you first started your TOOL journey!
This is definitely in the far deep end of the TOOL pool as far as listenability and ease of thematic comprehension, but it's also one of my favorites just because of the absurdly complex time signatures which, as you experienced for yourself, produce a wildly trippy listening experience.
In my personal opinion, this is the spiritual successor to Third Eye and the fully realized version of what they were trying to convey with that earlier song. It literally feels like you have been taken along for an unexpected psychedelic roller coaster ride!
In particular, the moment in the song when Maynard sings the verse with "…but I forgot my pen!" might very well be my favorite TOOL moment of all time.
Such a climactic crescendo of instrumentals and emotions, only to be abruptly reeled back to reality by the hilariously anticlimactic realization of human error by the protagonist.
It's serious & silly, chaotic & beautiful, triumphant & fallible, confident & self-deprecating all at the same time!

No one is ever ready for these tracks, even after listening to all of their previous tracks. These 3 tracks together take you to a place you have never been too before. It took me about a year before I listened to Rosetta Stoned past the first verse, I didn’t get Tool yet. At first it was just great music. But when you eliminate all distractions & even though you might have listened to these tracks before, I am amazed on how they play this track. Even more amazing is how did they write this track? And then for it to sound so fricking amazing. 10,000 Days is an album that has changed music forever!!!

This has actually grown into one of my favorite Tool songs. The lyrics and the music can almost be two separate songs and then together can make a third, lol. But to me, other of course, Danny, Justin just murders it in this song. About a third through the song he starts that driving tribal beat with Danny syncing up and it goes into almost sounding like snapping fingers, that’s one of my favorite parts of any Tool song. Love it! Appreciate the honest reaction, this Can understandably be a grower, just be open to it and i promise, it will.

Another example would be Tenacious D's Tribute, the song being a tribute to the greatest song ever made, because they couldn't remember how it went.

To me it’s their most progressive song because there’s so many changes and they’re very well crafted seamless transitions. Tool has ended up being the perfect confluence of four highly talented, extremely thoughtful, well read, deliberate human beings that, every so often, meld into this one awesome, unbelievable organism. Rosetta Stoned is easily in my top five Tool tracks. I honestly feel like I'm not as good at reading deeply into songs or picking up on complex instrumental riffs as many Tool fans, I just enjoy the sounds pouring into my ears. Lyrics/vocals are the first thing I usually like about a song, along with the overall melody, and the lyrics in this track crack me up with the story they tell. The mournful way he sings "I forgot my pen!" 😂

You have now experienced on this album the two gnarliest Tool songs ever in my opinion: Rosetta Stoned and Jambi. So many shifting rhythms and as a guitar player I think they feature Adam's best, tightest guitar work. Really the whole album is Adam's magnum opus to me. He does his thing so well here and the guitar sound is the most modern, crispy and gain-y of any of their albums.

That Friday night I dosed up and sat back and listened to Lateralus and 10,000 back to back, and this song was the one that dug itself into my brain and hasn’t let go since. RS is the one I go to 1st now when I gotta jam Tool. The fungus was able clarify the message they were trying to convey, and now I “get” it. Good luck with this one Skullz, 1 time through isn’t nearly enough for it though, give yourself a while to chew on it.

A big part of this song is about how these epiphany-like revelations during a psychedelic experience which seems so clear and unforgettable in the moment are gossamer and ephemeral and seem to evaporate like a dream when you’ve come down, and turn from something so real and tangible in the moment to a faded sort of misty memory that you can only grasp at the feelings it gave you. He illustrates it perfectly by starting the song with detailed rambling, explaining the minutiae of the come up, but when it comes to the point of explaining the important gnosis he received his articulation beings to break down into repeating just the feelings of the moment, “it was so real”, “please believe me”, “I don’t even know where to begin”... but he never is able to really begin to convey what he had received. And it just further descends down into his grasping the cold reality of the situation. What seemed so important slipped through his fingers and he’s left cold and alone in a hospital bed shitting himself. Lol. Gotta love it.
It also perfectly illustrates extremely common, and intense experiences in the heavy ego-death level of trips that many people who have experienced heavy psychedelics will understand, the messiah complex, or chosen one complex where you feel like the universe really is revolving around you in some way that your experience is truly unique and important in some fatalistic way, as well eschatological, end of the world type delusions, and of course, coming in contact with autonomous entities.
This song is basically the flip side of the coin to Third Eye. While Third Eye proselytizes for the benefits of psychedelic use, this song serves as a cautionary tale of psychedelic use, and why it’s so important to fully understand and respect psychedelics if you’re going to get into them.

Loved this! Interesting that you touched on the language/translation barrier. That concept is baked into the song name. The Rosetta Stone is an ancient tablet that has the same passage of writing repeated in like 2 or 3 different languages and it was used to decipher and translate those languages. So yeah, you were spot on 😎
I love this song, but I understand how it has a high admission cost for most people. Even for the massive Tool fan that I am, it still took about 6 years of skipping this track before I started to give it a chance, and since then it's become one of my favourite Tool songs of all time. It's just incredible.
Re: feeling uncomfortable or not being able to interpret: you don't need to try with this one. This one, in my opinion, is purely there to enjoy the ride. Tool are a serious band but they also have a strong sense of humour... it's there if you look. And with this one I've always considered it just a fun ride for the sake of it. The lyrics are very much Maynard's sense of humour.
If you give this one time you'll realise the music is absolutely insane, and you might even come to enjoy the lyrical part.
IMO it can easily be listened to just on its own. Lost Keys enhances it, and adding it is my own preference normally. But IMO Lipan Conjuring can be left out.
Also I LOVED that you kept the track playing and got into the whole build up and section with "Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position..." That part is some of the best music of all time and I could see that you were lost in that moment and enjoying it for what it was. I've seen some reaction videos where they pause right at that point to talk about something and it kills the moment! Lol
Another stellar reaction Skullz keep it up! Can't wait for Right in Two! 🤘
