Thank you so very much! Excellent job with this video. I worked F/T teaching paramedic school, along with 2 other F/T, and 25 P/T instructors. I've seen a lot of people teach and you my friend have that most excellent demeanor, taking your time to cover everything that you could think of, in a very relaxed and pleasant way. Very nice work again. Also, I scored big points with my wife and son with your help in doing this project, as well as all of that money that you saved us. Thank you again! Rob....Chico, CA
This video was done so well. Paid attention to every little detail and showed everything you did before doing it so we can get a better understanding. Good job
Just wanted to share this with you guys. When removing the pigtail from the electrical sensor, oil filter housing, starter connection etc... you don't have to remove the retaining clip. All you need to do is press/push the clip inward and pull the connector out. This will prevent you from losing the clips. Just thought i mention it.
Thank you for putting this video together. It was extremely helpful. I was a little intimidated by all the interference that had to be removed in order to gain access to the starter. You took the worry out of the task. Thanks again for taking the time and effort to walk people like me through the process.
urban you are a BMW god i haven't seen a better tutorial video on UA-cam this detailed and with all the minor explanations and screws and every single detail great job
You sir are awesome! Thanks for the detailed directions. I just finished replacing my starter and it's thanks to you. There's nothing like UA-cam University. 👍
Hey Brotherman Thank you so so much for this video. My wife's car gave out on us three days ago and I brought it back to life today:) and it was all thanks to you. Thank you for taking the time to make this very detailed video. You didn't have to but ya did! You're the MAN!!!!
Dude! you kick ass bro. You just saved me $1200 that's what the dealer wants. Garage down the street, first said $685 then said $500. shaky! man, shaky. Don't know what to believe. Until I saw your vid. Great job man. Your step by step and most importantly no camera shaking was on the money. I followed your vid followed your step by step and I had the Starter out in 2, well 2 1/2 but that's cool. Just in time for second quarter Navy Army game (Go Navy). Small advice for anyone attempting a starter removal. Tape your screws and bolts and nuts and washers and everything else to the part you just removed. Keep your intakes covered, you don't want anything falling into your intakes. For the two t25 screw removal, located under the manifold; make sure the wrench sits nice and flat and unscrew nice and easy. You can strip the star on these screws easily. For the hoses under the manifold- they're a bitch I used pliers, just be gentle. The smaller hose which urbanhowto said was the hardest was actually the easiest for me. Here's what I did. Instead of getting your fingers from one hand trying to squeeze it , I used both hands my left hand along side the back of the hose not visible to you, my right hand on the side facing you. from the back side and front side I squeezed pulled and it came right off. Anyway hope this helps
Thank you so much! I’m not that much of a car guy and I was able to do it myself. The 2 screws for the junction box bracket were T27 and not T25 (2011 328i xdrive).
'08 328xi is T-27's; I found out the hard way...stripped the first one out attempting to remove it with a T-25. And, at 42:00 those clips are a bitch and I have yet to budge one of them. I'm almost ready to call a tow. Plus, the hose across the back of the intake has no play to clear the bolts and can't figure out how to loosen/remove.
Mission accomplished and could not have done it without this video. There were a few items on mine that failed to match up but, they were of no major annoyance and only cost me one stripped screw.
Good and detailed. Thank you. It took me forever, but I got it done. By the way, that part that you said not to disconnect the electrical cable from looked like the throttle body. Thanks again.
Great video but I don’t think I would let autozone test that starter half those boys couldn’t tie there shoe . I would probably find a place that rebuilds alternators and starters do it to be sure . That’s an lot of work to find out it’s not the problem. But you did great thanks for posting
Dude great video! Lots of information and great camera work too! Tips for you and everyone here is to use ziplock bags to store screws and bolts. Just label the bags. Use bright masking tape to tape up connectors. This will make it easy to spot cables not plugged in. Use a marker to mark anything to help you not forget. Lastly With these BMWs upgrade any flimsy plastic hose with an engine/transmission oil hose with metal screw on hose clamps. Vacuum leaks suck ass on these cars but when it works right its second to none!
PLEASE READ!!!!!! At 38 minutes it's a T-27!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT A T-25!!!!!!!! I slightly stripped out the 2 little screws because of this and it held me up quite some time!!!! Otherwise thank you for the help, it was awesome, super helpful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My engine light came on stated that it was the starter. The code it read as "A0B4 Engine Start, starter operation" and "A0B2 Supply, terminal 30E/30L". Well I followed this video and it went smooth. You rock! Thanks a ton! First, I disconnected the battery and started remove one piece by one. I kept track of all parts by labeling them. The fist piece I removed, I put #1 and so on. So when it was time to put them back, I simply followed the order in which they were removed going backward. I just replaced the starter as well as spark plugs last night. Hours later all went well. It was pretty easy if your know where things are located and have some patience. Dealer wanted ~$1200 + tax just to replace the started plus a few hundreds more for spark plugs. Again, thanks everybody, especially the video author - you are the man!
This is the first video I’ve watched of yours and just wanted to say you explain things very well and I need to replace my starter on my 2008 328i 3.0 L also your video is a big help , so thank you very much and from now on I’ll be watching, dam good job....👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I replaced my starter as it was 100% the issue but now the car cranks but doesn't start, I took everything apart to make sure I did everything correct and I'm still will not start but engine is cranking. Any help you can provide would be great as this vid was a awesome
Your video was GREAT man donno why ANYONE would dislike this video your detail was perfect best car DIY iv seen in years bro thank you i have a 128i now I feel a little confident on changing my starter👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽the camera person did a good job too thank you as well
starter cost on this is anywhere between $60 to $490... depending on getting an after market or original... the cost to replace this at a dealership or certified mechanic is around the $800... this video is big saving...
@ minute 31' that part is the Throttle Housing, you should also replace that green seal after removing it with part #13547522361. Great Video by the way
I’m so grateful for your video. My car was sitting for almost two months b/c of the starter. It helped my husband and his friend change the starter and save us $400 at minimum!☺️
Hey man, I don't even wanna do this job Once, and you did it Twice just to give us a good DIY video. Greatly Appreciated!!! Definetly the best diy video I've found for this job.. 👍👌🙌👏
Urbanhowto, this is THE BEST video I have seen on an E90 starter replacement. I watched your video last weekend to replace my own starter and it was a breeze. Two hours and it was a done deal. Not one warning light. THANK YOU!
About to tackle this thing. Tale tale sign of starter failing? You will just hear click and nothing.... 1200+ From BMW too... Do it your self! Thanks bro!
Uuuuuuuuuhuuu!!!... I did'it cause you help me with this video... You know what....hasta con la novia quede bien... Hasta me siento chingon... Ha ha... Gracias
Wow, you are awesome. This is one if not the best video of fixing a car that I ever watched. You went through the steps one at a time, WOOOOOW you are good, please keep up the good work.
Awesome video. I do have a question to where is the heater control valve located I have a 2010 bmw 328i. Any information would be much appreciated thank you
Great video, it helped me remove my manifold and replace the CCV. Just wanted to add that you don't need to take the metal clip of the connector at 49:33 you can just push down on it and pull it out. This way you don't run the risk of losing the clip. Cheers!
My starter is not coming out after removing the bolts. Think it is the corrosion. I have tried spraying WD 40, and prying with a flathead. Could the teeth be stuck to the flywheel? If not what else should I do, if someone can pls suggest
I just don't know any words that describes how thankful I am of you and this video. Thank you for taking the time to make the video and helping others. You saved me a lot of money! Blessings for you and your family brother!!!!
Hello i have a 2008 328i sedan..on your video, to the LEFt of the starter is some type of ground cable with round end (looks like grommet) attached to engine.I dont have this on my car?? what is it for? and should i have it? its held on with a torx bolt to left of positive battery cable attached to starter.
Hi I checked your video out and it was very helpful. I actually did my this morning and everything worked out great, continue the great information thanks.
if you have to spoon feed people to this level, I would suggest they dont take in on. If something doesnt go according to this step by step they will be stuck with a half disassembled car. this job has many complexities which are considered advanced. Buyer beware, the intention is good, but the reality may be different for people who don't already have knowledge on a basic level of tools and mechanics.
Someone else said it was a T27 so whatever size it is, it is NOT a T25, you will strip the bolt, mine is now stripped, along with someone else’s in the comments. They are aluminum bolts so even a tiny amount and it’s stripped. Like seriously you should of at least got it right when it’s a bolt we can’t see. Yes everyone makes mistakes in wording but a mistake like this could cost someone thousands of dollars. You are trying to make UA-cam money from us watching a learning video, how to video, at least get it right.
Everybody do yourself a favor and don't buy parts from AutoZone they're junk and you'll be replacing them pretty quickly even coil packs I just bought that top-of-the-line Duralast and they didn't even work in the car and the guy told me that the common 99% of that parts are made in China. I ordered mine from FCP Euro I didn't opt for the free shipping because it said it took 3 to 5 days I paid for the 799 shipping and came Within 24-hours I ordered by 1:30 and got it the next day for $7.99 and I ordered a bunch of parts
Typical crappy BMW. The designers purposely buried the starter knowing it will inevitably need to be replaced they're by requiring most owners to take their car to the dealer so they can charge them an enormous amount of money in labor expenses. All they had to do with designing the car so the starter can be reached from beneath like most normal vehicles.
This video attracted my attention because the starter motor in my 2011 BMW 328i needs to be replaced. I was curious to see what the service department of my BMW dealer has to do to replace the starter motor. Today's cars are a lot more complex than they were in times past. With many old cars one can get at the starter motor by jacking up the front of the car and the starter motor was easily accessible from beneath the engine.
I replace the starter following the same process once I fired up the car it the engine ran good I just let the engine run for few min then I turn it off once I realize the fan kept running so I started again having the issue that the engine was accelerate rpm going crazy don't know what was the cause still trying to figure out if u can help me out I will appreciate
Great video man thanks for taking the time to film it and describe every lil detail. This is hands down one of the best dyi tutorials for people looking a complete guide to this repair keep it up. Can u make one to replace the springs on the e90 lol
I know this is an old video, but go ahead and remove the hose for the throttle bottle get that thing out and clean it with intake or throttle body cleaner. No reason why you shouldn’t remove it.
14:40.... that's not how you release that clip. What you do is you push that pin in word and then pull you don't have to pull the whole entire pin out you may lose it and then you're screwed
I have a 2006 330i 4dr E90: I used a 7/16 box wrench(closed side) on the rear facing torx bolt holding the starter on(the longer one). ALSO! VERY IMPORTANT! The 330 is a 'tuned' 325/328. One of the modifications made to the 330i is a three stage air induction system. The two air hoses attached to the "back" of the manifold do not hold the manifold to the engine. Instead, they extend from an additional air "tank". There are two supplementary air lines connected to the bottom and side of this "tank". In addition and just as necessary to remember to address, there is a four-strip panel with wire connectors attached; these connections need to be disconnected before the manifold will ready for removal. ~~~~~take pictures of thing as you go. Just remembered, the torx screws holding the wiring harness to the manifold is a T29 on my car. I, fortunately, purchased a multi-size pack for $14.99. The back one was hard-as-f*%k to get out. Be careful you don't strip it.
once disconnecting the two air hoses (bottom, side) of the three stage air induction system & four strip wire connectors. When you remove the manifold is the three stage air induction system attached? Also can you just unscrew the panel for the four strip connectors instead of disconnecting all of them?
I just did mine on my 330i and yes you are right but I was able to install new starter without removing intake manifold or air lines. I just set aside. tip please remove Steering pump bracket for more space.
If anyone is having trouble with the back starter bolt on the bell housing and they don't have an e-torx socket, use a 3/8" box end wrench. Fit's perfect with zero slip. Highly recommend ordering the crankcase breather hose that wraps behind the engine and under the manifold and have it ready to go if needed. It will save the job if needed and if not, return it. Trust me on this one. It is very brittle and will most likely snap when removed. (Ask me how I know) When installing the leads back onto the starter, be sure to tilt them upwards slightly so the starter connector will clip on fully underneath it. (The one that is the push clip style) If not, it will not seat correctly and will be loose or fall off.

Which metal clips are you talking about?

I hate these engines. Just changing a simple valve cover gasket takes forever to do.
Tackled this job last night , didn’t remove the intake fully , only loss I had was the brittle crankcase tube on the rear busted

Just replaced mine today cost me $220 parts and $100 labour. Total $320
N52s are easier than N51s. The emissions BS really takes the fun out of it. lol
14:40.... that's not how you release that clip. What you do is you push that pin in word and then pull you don't have to pull the whole entire pin out you may lose it and then you're screwed
Great Video .. and your no pro .. wow I’m impressed sir 🔥🔥🔥
Amazing help. Thank you very much for this video.
What is the thick cable to the left of the starter (if you are looking at it) that is attached to the sidewall?
Great video, but never heard anyone say “basically” so much. Ha
excellent video , great camera guys, excellent job
Dude!!!! Thank you so fucken much!!!!! Please make more vids!!!!!
Will this video work on a 2009 328i convertible?
Thank you. Done in 2 hours with the right tools and I saved hundreds of dollars.
Great video, well explained 👏
Thanks man

Good video and very helpful! Thanks a lot!!!
great video! very detailed. thanks a lot!!!
Awesome, saved me serious money following your video.
(Ask me how I know)
When installing the leads back onto the starter, be sure to tilt them upwards slightly so the starter connector will clip on fully underneath it. (The one that is the push clip style) If not, it will not seat correctly and will be loose or fall off.
