Boz 2011 i have seen steady rpms. Thats pretty steady. I do live in canada where our engines run at -35c on winterized gas. Tough for an engine to be steady from cold.
Thanks mate, changed my banks solinoids twice still had problems so I pulled out the non return valves and they were full of grit. Cleaned them and now got a smoothe running engine. Cheers.
Rough idle can be caused by blocked engine crankcase breathers. The breather filters are built into the valve cover which will need to be renewed if this is the problem. When the engine is running remove the oil filler cap and remove it, if the cap is hard to remove or you hear any 'sucking' noise as you remove it then you have a breather problem.
Thanks for covering this. My rough idle is not as severe as yours and does it momentarily on cold start ups. I already replaced my valve cover assembly, eccentric shaft sensor, ignition coils, spark plugs, vanos solenoids, cleaned MAF sensor, and changed oil to 5w30 instead of 5w40. I will be ordering new non return valves to replace them, regardless if they turn out to be clogged or not. Update: I replaced my non return valves today. I noticed both the motor and trans. were more smooth, so far. I only get the rough idle after leaving my car alone overnight, so I am gonna have to wait and check how the idle will be the next day after a cold start.
If rough idle it's correlated with smoke when you floor it, check the O2 sensors, this was the culprit on my N52. Changed everything, vanos solenoids, coils, spark plugs, etc. Problem was Bank 1 pre-cat O2 sensor, NO check engine and NO fault codes...

After 6 months of chasing vanos codes and replacing parts for my rough idle I came across your video. Lo and behold I took them out cleaned them up, re installed and my car has the most stable and smooth idle! Was a little different for me as I have the n13 engine 116i. You are right there is not much if any information on these non return valves and how they affect the vanos system!!

This time paid less than 200 for the part. Gained valuable knowledge about this car. Also did the coils, sparkplugs, cleaned the various filters and sensors and whola, runs like new.
I have Forte fuel system clean and full engine flush carried out at every service and I don't follow the BMW 20,000 mile intervals as shown on the dash count down, I stick to 13,000 miles maximum between services. No problems because of this and I cover 250 miles a day
Change synthetic oil every 5000 miles to avoid this problem caused by burned paraffin sludge. Thanks for the good fix video! I never knew those filters were there.
Change your spark plugs to the new 4 electrodes on them, BMW changed the spark plugs without telling customers to fix the idle problem The new plugs are available at BMW to replace the single electrode one.. The bmw & Mini dr on youtube has just given out the info recently..
You don't have to believe everything from the net. Just think at this...how come the car was running normal without the new spark plugs before and now runs normal just with that spark plugs...kinda strange for me... but every one believes what they want...anyway my car idles perfect with normal spark plugs

Great video. Does anyone know the position of the non return valves on a 2008 N43 318i. I've already cleaned the Vanos solenoids, but didn't know about these valves. Thanks.
My 2007 x3 also chugs but has a really loud high pitcged squeal and does it all the time. Everything i found on it is that i need to replace the pcv vavle... which just so happens to supposedly be molded to the valve cover.. atleast from what ive been able to find out about it.. its creating a ton of suction and if i take oil fill cap off it stops squealing but will still chug just not as bad.. took it to bmw dealership and they said my valve cover is cracked.. didnt say where just that it would cost 2500 dollars.. there is no oil leaking tho. Which my dad a mechanic of u.s. domestic vehicle of 20+ yrs says there would be oil leaking out of a crack if there was one... there is some sensor on the top front of my engine that has had caulk rubbed all over the case and there was a bit of oil in the plug part of same sensor.. cant find what the sensor is to replace it tho.. for all i know that could be the thing i need to fix..
Sir thank you so much for the video, i have exactly the same issue, we just cleaned the vanos intake and exhaust, but we have never seen this, What tools you use to clean this to avoid damage please ? Thanks again

Also I've changed every gasket like how you did, new spark plugs, new compressor, new pcv

@@lukasp7406 I will have to reword what I said I think. I tried everything I could without knowing about these filters. To be fair a bmw main dealer and two independent "specialists" didn't mention these either. One independent adjusted the gap on the finger between the motor and valvetronic cams and it cleared up a lot but was never as silky smooth as when I first got it. It was running like a swish watch one minute, I overtook a lorry on a dual carriageway, then pulled back in and I noticed the hesitation and fluffy Ness on idle and part throttle. Baffling. It was absolutely mint with leather interior and the fancy stereo in it (forgot the name) I had to sell it quick due to having a company car, I sold it to a chav family from liecster who after about two months wrote it off. Such a shame
Of course. But a bad mixture indicates loss of vacuum or not enough fuel. If you didn't code the kat out or the O2 sensor that might be your problem as well
Hi! I got a E92 bmw 2007 , 2.5i 92.000 miles on the clock..The problemI got is the engine just cut of at lower speed. I changed the VANOS solenoids the oil filter and the oil, but nothing happend, engine cuts of at lawer speeds. Can you give me some advices please! , I see you know all about this tipe of engines. Thanks allot!!!
Usually when the power is cut at lower rpm is a vacuum leak, or fuel system error. At high rpm is always electric. Check the vacuum hoses from the engine cover to the intake, oil separator, maf sensor....
Your code suggest the air flow meter (MAF) is bad...but the idle problem is almost always air related on this engines. You have to check all the breather hoses, engine cover, pcv valve....if everything else is OK.
Nobody shows you how to actually remove those nonretun valves. I tried but abandoned the job because I could not get the bit to grab the valves. What tools or extensions did you use?
I have N52, P0012 error code. I installed 2 new cam sensors, 2 new vanos solenoids, new non return solenoids valves, new oil change with new oil cap, and still have the code with bad idle the first 5 seconds when I start the car. Any input?

Hi, I have the same problem on cold start as in the video at 0:36. Did this procedure solve the problem permanently? I can't find a solution to this problem for over a year. I replaced plugs and vanos solenoids, but nothing has changed.
If you're talkin about an e92 or something like that go for the Foxwell nt530 I was able to do everything on my car scan it on test on it reset it it was only like a hundred seventy bucks best purchase ever made
thank you! i just recently started seeing my car idle roughly and i was planning on overhauling my coils and spark plugs but i will try this first! How hard was it to remove the two filters?
Why does mine idle around 400? It seems smooth and fine. Still got the low down torque up high though it falls flat, I think that’s normal for these engines.
All the engines with vanos have this filters. Non return valves are called. It is a little bit hard for you to get in there because of the turbo (335i)

Rough idle can be caused by blocked engine crankcase breathers. The breather filters are built into the valve cover which will need to be renewed if this is the problem. It was running like a swish watch one minute, I overtook a lorry on a dual carriageway, then pulled back in and I noticed the hesitation and fluffy Ness on idle and part throttle. Baffling.
It was absolutely mint with leather interior and the fancy stereo in it (forgot the name)
I had to sell it quick due to having a company car, I sold it to a chav family from liecster who after about two months wrote it off.
Such a shame
Great video, thanks a lot, going to remove and clean mine out after oil change.
I cleaned mine and car still idles badly and it has no check engine light
For the love of me i tried to get to the filters from the top and it is nearly impossible...dunno how you did it😊.
the car is undulating, the computer indicated a poor mixture, where to start? it is possible that I do not have catalysts
Of course. But a bad mixture indicates loss of vacuum or not enough fuel. If you didn't code the kat out or the O2 sensor that might be your problem as well
Ty you for this video. Question do you know if the n55 motor has those bolted filters
@@WarpDriveM i wiil do many thanks!!!!
Dirty VANNOS is Common problem on N52 always use highest octane gas and helps with this issue.
Someone please research a p1415 code and see what you think, I've changed every component under my hood, nothing has fixed my issue.
Do i have these on my BMW E90 318i lci?
I have N52, P0012 error code. I installed 2 new cam sensors, 2 new vanos solenoids, new non return solenoids valves, new oil change with new oil cap, and still have the code with bad idle the first 5 seconds when I start the car. Any input?
Did you figure it out @my tech garage? I have same issue
@@VictoriaBCProperties no I haven't
@@mytechgarage have you used some machine to look for vacuum leak?
@@VictoriaBCProperties no I haven't
I'm going to try this next on my n52!
Iv already done
Vanos solenoids
CCV replaced with new cover
CCV hose
Crank positioning sensor
Plugs
No luck. Infact it got worse with new oem solenoids..
Do you have the oem part numbers for the gaskets?
Wow..like myself, after spending thousand of dollars on unnecessary parts for rough idle like solanoid, spark plugs, mass flow sensor etc etc...thsese 2 non return oil valves are the problems? Thanks man for the video. I should have saved money had i watched your video earlier...ha..ha.
Does m54b22 motors have non return valve ?
Do you remmember size of socket T30, T40 ??? Thanks
I think I've mentioned in the video but if I remember correctly it was T40
@@WarpDriveM sorry, maybe I miss. I ordered 1 set of size up to T40 is maximum. Thanks
I cleaned mine a while ago it woks fine. It just to jump so bad when i was in a red light
Hi, I have the same problem on cold start as in the video at 0:36. Did this procedure solve the problem permanently? I can't find a solution to this problem for over a year. I replaced plugs and vanos solenoids, but nothing has changed.
In my case it worked but I've done it just 2-3 days ago. I'll post an update in a few weeks
The problem was back! I found out that my CCV valve was bad. See that video here: ua-cam.com/video/w0sGD_DH7Cc/v-deo.html
Check disa valves with inpa
Is yours a Blue Water E90 328i, looks super nice
I did plugs coil packs fucking vanos solenoid and it makes like a droning sound
BMW: displays minor irregularity
Owner: FIRE UP THE PARTS CANNON!
Great. Good for you man.
Hey, what size T-socket did you use?
T-30?
Can you tell me what is a good scantool for the bmw, not to expensive
You can download for free Inpa from a lot of forums. You need to buy just a K+Dcan cable (aprox 20$) and you are set.
It’s a great educational video my friend.
What are these filters actually called? I have a 335xi with the N54 eng . Was wondering if I have those filters also? Thank you
All the engines with vanos have this filters. Non return valves are called. It is a little bit hard for you to get in there because of the turbo (335i)
I can’t wait to see what mine look like also.. Maybe this weekend if it does not rain. I’m in New Orleans and I have only street parking
Mine were not clogged but great video and well explained.
What did you use to clean it??
Ive used brake cleaner and some blades to scrape the burned oil
I have same issue i am gonna clean it thanks for sharing.
Looks like the RPM & engine still shaking when cleaned them all in your video
