Please people do this from the top.....I know it seems daunting to pull the intake but its really not, then everything is really easy to access. no jack, no lowering of transmission, no risk of dropping a car on yourself or the frustrations of try to reach up into that tiny space. and honestly its much faster.
great job on the video and your tenacity is to be admired.

i will try from the top next time. i was just following the repair manual. But you can always say, there are other ways to do a repair. You don't have to always follow the book. Many have commented like yours. Go on the top and remove the intake manifold. I get it. thank you for the comment. Happy Thanksgiving.

brother just take the intake manifold off and use a 10 mm box wrench to get the etorx bolts off the back of the starter, I did this whole job on my e46 in an hour. granted I have taken my intake manifold off over 10 times and it takes me 15 minutes at this point. Your commitment to getting it out from the bottom is admirable and I appreciate your effort.

The BMW E46 6-cylinder engine starter motor is located on the left side of the engine below the intake manifold. It is not the easiest part to access on your BMW and can be replaced a few different ways. On most rear wheel drive manual transmission models, you can access the starter from below. On rear wheel drive automatic transmission models, you can access it from below but there limited workspace. On all-wheel drive models, the sub frame has to be lowered to access the starter from below, so I prefer to pull the intake manifold .
You should be aware that in all 6-cylinder models you can pull the intake manifold out of the way to replace the starter. You have much better access and can avoid lying on your back for hours. Great video , well appreciated the effort you took. keep up the great work.

On e36 better to lower subrame in engine bay and lower gearbox a bit and do it from under the car than removing the intake many cus that wont give you much space to losen the bolts from starter

Lmao you're giving me flashbacks when I changed the starter on my 97 M3. It would have been easy if the previous owner didn't tighten the shit out of those two bolts when he did a clutch job. First I removed manifold but that's when I found out the bolts were too tight so I had to go from underneath.

You sir, are a lifesaver. I wasn't changing my starter but I needed to replace the cable from the alternator to starter. No need to remove the intake manifold with this method. I actually was able to use a mirror and two extensions on my ratchet from the front of the car once my oil filter housing was out. I also removed the CCV lines. For installation of the cable I went under the car like you and used my mirror to guide me. Only thing was I lost the 13mm nut.

At 19:06 we can tell that someone had removed the starter before and didn't bolt the cable hanger with the loop using the starter outer bolt. This is why it seems these two E12 bolts are not too hard to loosen.
You should use a 24" long 1/2" externsion to remove these bolts working at the back of the tranny, not at the left side as you did.

  • @randyfleet9968

There is a much easier way to get those mounting bolts out, for me anyway. I use the right size ratchet wrench from the top. It works just as well as a reverse torex socket.

It could have been started in reverse also no need to push back then forward. Also you should have just pushed it into the driveway 1st time. Agree on pulling the intake to do the starter waaaay easier then underneath. Good job tho.
