With all the respect to you, my opinion, as an owner of N42B20A, is that because the vvt sensor is made of plastic it sucks oil from the inside of the valve cover to the outside (plug of sensor). Is the same that happens also with camshaft and crankshaft sensors.
BMW reliability issues are legendary. and for good reason as they use sub par materials that have a short life span and expensive replacement parts coupled with difficult time consuming access make these cars a nightmare to work on. and will soon impact sales .
@george40nelson4 They don't use "sub par" materials. The eccentric shaft sensor is made by Siemens which is a very reputable electronics manufacturer in europe. A lot of other parts are either bosch. Lemforder, bilstein. The cars are just incredibly over engineered and anything that goes wrong will throw the car off and into limp mode. They are much better made than american cars.
Good video, tho to point out.. the valvetronic system is in charge of adjusting valve lift, Not advancing timing (vanos solenoids are in charge of that). The eccentric shaft sensor monitors how much the valve is lifted and if not operating correctly will cause all these issues you've pointed out. Keep up the good work 👍

I’ve been dealing with a misfire on cylinders 5, and sometimes I my car will stall when reversing only with low rpm’s. And the car has been roughly idling since the start of that misfire. And the issue didn’t start till after I did my valve cover. Guess I’m gonna have to redo my valve cover and replace the eccentric shaft sensor.
Or if your eccentric shaft is worn (on N62 are two of them) and you are not willing to spend like 2000 euro only in parts then just plug off these sensors and drive without the VVT… already driving like that for 6 mounts,no more missfires, rough idle, check engine, bad smell from exhausts or limp mode (my engine is N62B48)

@@shibasalute Have you tried cleaning the Vanos check valves?
Any news? There are vanos filters at the side of the engine. Have you tried them?
is the same sensor in E46 325i?
Would a scanner identify it before changing sparks vanos solenoids
Hello, DOC I try to communicate with you but I couldn't, I have problem with this sensor I would like to hear your opinion please.
Top video and top as always, dudes got the skills 💪🤙👊🍻
🤙
@@BMWDoctor hi sir. Can you advice me what would cause an n42 engine to have oil light come on only on idle and only when the temperature gauge is half. Also idle is rough. But once car cools down. Everything is normal. Could it be the oil is too thin when warm
oh thank God I got a vanos instead of valvetronic
I cannot understand if you're saying essential shaft or eccentric shaft, or central shaft. Some fast talking mumbling, hard for a non-car enthusiast to understand, but ty. I have an x-1 2015 been giving me problems fro years. Breaks my heart and wallet
Then maybe a non-car enthusiast should take their ass to a mechanic instead of watching YT videos?
Hi is there any way of getting in touch with you as i have a issue with my 635d
respect doc love the information thks
Can you help with e46 standard transmission
I know this is random, but I have no one else to ask. I love your videos and thought you might have the answer

Did you ever find out what’s wrong with your car?
hello very good video my car an e64 engine n52 630i starts well and keeps the idle well but on diagnosis it tells me P1017 fault so this sensor, should it be changed while the engine is running very well?? sorry I translate because I live in France thank you
You know your stuff ✅ thanks
My sensor was leaking oil on the gasket and dripping onto the manifold. Had to use some silicon to seal the gasket and now all good
Richard Owen what symptoms or codes was your car giving out
alex molina none
That silicone works well. Used in on my X5. Also use Blue Devil stop leak.
Great video great information, I’ll definitely check this out on my N52 👍
Thank you so much for this video, toke my one off, found a lot of burnt oil and metal in the center of the sensor where the head of the shaft goes into the sensor inside.
What year/month is this car
Will this also be a problem on the 650i's 2007 N62 4.8L engine?
I've got a question. So, I think this could very well be my problem. However, is there a way that I could test this, to make sure that it is the problem? I feel like I've already thrown away a decent chunk of money on this ongoing struggle to fix me car.
Hi Dean can you just disconnect it or would I need to replace it as I took it off today and then plugged it back in and car started to run smooth again
Thank you, this is my current issue for BMW Z4 E89 (2011) Engine shaking after start drive around for 2-3 mins engine light show up and did the Diagnostics found the issue
Fault code: 0029D2 Misfiring, Cylinder 6
Fault code: 002D16 Air mass meter, signa
Fault code: 002D0F Air mass meter, signal
Fault code: 002F08 Intake air temperature sensor signal
The question is do i have to replace all ignition coil and spark plugs ?
Thank you
Hi Doc ! From California, I have a N52B30 I believe 11’ F10 I recently had a shop “change the seal” on the Eccentric Shaft Sensor, the valve cover never came off. Doesn’t that mean it wasn’t changed ?!
A little late but I’m pretty sure you can replace the seal by itself. At least on the magnesium ones
I priced the bolts for the valve cover here in Canada. Over $150. I wish it was only 20 gbp.
The generic bolts are much cheaper. Check Amazon.
MY M5 IS SAVEDDDDDDDDDDDD UR A SUPER LEGEND
I have a BMW 128 it was stolen out a lot then one morning it doesn't want to start I unplugged my ESS and it fixed the problem but it was running crappy. Then it just decided not to start at all with the ESS unplugged what does that mean and I replaced it with a new ESS still doesn't run with it plugged in or unplugged and there are no codes except for when I have it unplugged
Good stuff!
What will be the part number for a 2006 BMW 330 Xi Sedan
Did you have rough idle issue? If so what did you do to fix it? I have the same exact car as you
Whats thar sensor called
Is this only for the regular/ base engines ?
Man you really know your BMWs! And fixing these things with your own hands sure beats selling one or more of the kids to take it to the dealer. But I've done that too, and look no more kids! lol
Can this happen to a 2004 545i cause I’m having the same issues
love the way you say MOTOR :)
Replacing all the bolts if you take the head and gasket off is categorically not a necessity. I get what you're saying, for 20 quid just replace them, but no, it's not necessary to replace these at all, and you'll be fine reusing the same bolts.
Great video again 👍could you please do a video on E70 ZF8 gearbox oil and filter change?
