China originally wanted to build the China-Vietnam-Thailand high-speed rail, but Vietnam handed over the project to Japan. China could only build the China-Laos-Thailand high-speed rail and use Laos as a railway transshipment center. Laos would not lose money. Every year, the goods transported between China and Thailand, Transit fees must be paid to Laos, and passenger transport can drive tourism in neighboring countries. After the epidemic is over, a large number of tourists will enter Laos from Thailand and China, and the income of the Lao people will also increase. With the improvement of the economy, China will increase The infrastructure construction in Laos will improve the living standards of the Lao people. This railway will be the economic artery of Laos in the future!

BRI is to assist land locked countries develop. This was done in Eastern Europe, and also South Asia.
Western European countries ignored their less developed Eastern European countries and concentrated their efforts to create military alliances for the past thirty year expanding NATO and selling weapons which did not help the local economies and didn't take care of the welfare of the people. It was all about military expansion.
When China started to assist in the infrastructures, western European politicians started complaining about
safety of their backyards and preservation of their values. Values don't resolve poverty or hunger . They're only empty rhetorics. What have they done to contribute to the economic development of these countries?

How many hours do you think are needed to clear 600 passengers at the border? Assuming 1 hour, then there can be only maximum 1 cross border departure per hour. 1 border adds 1 hour, 2 borders 2 hours. For small distances that cross multiple borders, this makes it potentially slower than flights. For longer distances involving multiple borders, this disadvantage may become even more apparent. Besides, current train fare that is not cheap is already subsidized by governments. Will governments subsidize pass through international passengers? If they can identify those passengers (if), the unsubsidized fare may be more expensive than air fare. Basically cross border high speed trains have low viability.
If they are not cross border trains, then it will depend on financial feasibility at individual domestic areas. If Bangkok - Chiang Mai cannot sustain such a train service, can southern Thailand do it? Extremely hard.
The most they can do is 140-160 kph trains like now. These are not high speed trains. If you have taken them, you will realize they are barely faster than buses on highways, and at a much higher fare. Most people will not find it nice to travel more than 300 km on such trains, because the traveling time is going to be too long. For shorter distances like 100-300 km, it is bearable. But this will be mostly domestic, again depending on individual domestic areas. If the area cannot sustain it financially, then it will just drain government resources. Not many countries here can hide huge train system debts like China does. If they can, they would have built subways in every city. The fact that only 1 city in each country has subways means the governments do not have the ability to handle such levels of debt.
I have an engineering background. But I no longer dream of things without checking how achievable they are. Money is never *not* a problem.

In Southeast Asia there are two countries that have bullet trains (Indonesia and Laos.) The difference is that bullet trains in Indonesia are not yet connected to China and they connect cities in Indonesia with the aim of growing new industrial areas, especially growth in the electric car battery industry ( Indonesia Battery Corp / IBC, LG Energy Soultions and CATL have started producing electric batteries for all EV brands in the world and controls more than 70% of the world's electric car batteries ).
So many electric car brands have been produced in Indonesia (Hyundai Ioniq 5, Wuling Air EV, Toyota Innova Zenix Hybrid, BZ4X and others) and this not only assembling like in other countries because in Indonesia they also produce electric car batteries.
Very different from the bullet trains in Laos, they are directly connected to cities in China.Things that are very unbalanced and profitable for China, with the completion of this bullet train it will be easier for China to expand economically to Laos and Laos only as a consumer for Chinese goods / products.

These are all double-win scenarios for Asia&SouthEastAsian regions. Without transportation and trade, there will be no economic growth. If Indonesia does not trade with other countries, and import and export goods, it is also impossible to develop EV car industry in air. This is all about business, not politics.

Maybe, but at the same time US was in that infamous Vietnam/Laos war , the Chinese Communist Party/Mao had a policy of terror called Cultural Revolution which caused 1.5-7-5 mln casualties and a multitude of mlns of people imprisoned in socalled Laogai/Gulag 're-education' concentration camps (causing mlns of casualties as well). And that was after the disastrous 'Great Leap Forward' policy which caused a whopping 15-55 mln casualties in the Great Chinese Famin (up to 10% of population). And recently they revived the Laogai Camps in the West of China with 10% of population imprisoned!
What could that mean for Thailand or Laos in the future ?
You've got to take in account that a railway by China is as much about economic goals as it is about chinese control ! Furthermore a lot of chinese hs railways do not render enough. If that becomes the case here this railway may become a debt trap as well.

200 km/h is over the threshold to be considered high speed. On normal tracks without a special train body tiling system, the trains never go over 200 km/h even if you have straight tracks. So 200 km/h rail tracks shall be considered as HSR, and the maintenance system and the related cost shall be the same as HSR. Further speed elevation only requires better terrains (with a larger radius in the curve) and the maintenance system is the same as tracks of 200 km/h.
