I still remember the first time I played this I was stuck on the beginning part for an entire month. For some reason I couldn't figure out how to get to the rebel in Fynn so I resorted to grinding in the neighboring area where the higher level monsters were so I could fight back against the imperials. It was only after defeating one that I realized you could walk around the wall to where the rebel is hiding.
If it makes you feel any better, the first time I played I made the mistake of going left first and put it down for like 10 years. Finally played the Dawn of Souls gba version recently... I really should have gone right the first time.
Your FF story explain vid are amazing, they are by far the best in terms of story and easy of following since some plots are convoluted. Any chance that you would cover 3, 5 amd the rest as well?
Having just watched the FF4 video i did get connections to this game with the Emperor feeling like the true final boss who mind controlled Leon ala Kain but my jaw fell when the lil kid actually turned out to be Kain himself. The climax of this story was truly amazing story telling. A massive leap from FF1. Also Guy speaking to a beaver is top 3 moments.

I really love how detailed your videos are; there's not many people that could make a 27 minute video about a game I've never played before and keep my attention the entire time, but your FF Complete Story videos are always all kinds of awesome!
Hi Xygor im a new Subcriber and thanks to your Final Fantasy complete story vids. It has helped me a lot to appreciate the FF stories and history. Also it would be really be a thanks if you sre able to make a complete story on Final Fantasy 5 and 8. In the end thank you for all of your great content and time on making and resesrching on the videos and games. Have a great day now.
I would like to know more about Emperor Matheus's past. His megalomaniacal behavior and belief that absolute power is the only thing that keeps the world running can demonstrate some trauma related to a lack of control over events in his life and perhaps envy towards some people in his life. Now, his possible need to govern the three planes of existence, may reveal something extremely personal. Like, wanting to decide who lives and who dies. Who does he think is more worthy of living and who does he think deserves more punishment and who deserves eternal rest when he dies, revealing a feeling of injustice, hence he possibly divided his own soul by instead of mastering both spectral aspects of reality as one soul, because he wants total effectiveness in this selection process, that things happen in the way that he considers to be the perfect one, and that the universe that constantly tormented him approves. Another thing that I realized about the Emperor, is the reason for his belief that the human being is imperfect and evil to be absolute. He believes that the human being has lost love, because people like Leon preferred to value their ambitions over their loved ones, and although it benefited the Empire, as we saw through the "Emperor of Light" part, he is completely impartial regarding his judgment of the human race due to his eyes being constantly closed, so, whether we belonged to the Empire or the rebellion, in the end, we would be just another despicable and corrupt human, the difference is that belonging to the Empire, you would not be exterminated because you were needed as a soldier. He also believes that the human being has a weak and wrong sense of justice, because as we saw throughout the game, the heroes make an alliance with pirates, who are known for looting, slaughtering and enslaving people, and a thief, however who knows if the rebels hadn't other thieves at their service, these less moralists than Paul, when the heroes should refuse to negotiate with people who, without an enemy to face like the Empire, would be hurting, bribing, killing, blackmailing and corrupting morally people who were honest and respectful of the law, and that the only reason for them to work with the heroes is because the Empire is a common enemy.
His past had been explained In a Japanese novel, basically his father before him, sold his soul to the devil, and was said to be a evil man. This influenced the emperor as he grew older. Something like that, basically he didn't start out evil, but after certain events, he became a wicked man.
That novel isn't canon. It's fairly different from the events of the game. The second novelization is more faithful. As for the notion that the Emperor had a tragic past... you don't need trauma to manifest control issues. There's a strong genetic component to that. I get the impression that the Emperor's misanthropy arose from a combination of narcissism and simple observation--it isn't difficult to arrive at the conclusion that humanity is flawed. The Emperor's niche is the "pure evil megalomaniac." This characterization has followed him into every FF spinoff there is, including his latest appearance in Opera Omnia, where he's described as a "talking monster" that sees people only as tools to be used in his single-minded campaign to control all of existence. I wouldn't look for a sympathetic backstory here.
FF 2 is ym favorite FF, be cool if they did a remake of it in the style of FF 7 remake....also my favorite moment hands down is the Lamia Hilda reveal, was like "What the fuh!?" for sure :D
There is one thing that bugs me about following the story of this game, and that's that they changed a lot of names from earlier versions to later ones. Most are pretty similar and it's obvious what it's supposed to be. Gus becoming Guy? Fine. Mindu becoming Minwu? It's still obvious who that is. Tell me though...how does the name "Gareth" become "Ricard"? That's just a completely new name. (I played the Origins version anyone who wants to know)
I started Final Fantasy 2 but never finished it. I felt it did not feel like 1, or later titles. You review thou has intrigued me to try it again. Thank you
It's true. The experience system is way different. It was designed by the person who would go on to direct the Romancing SaGa games, which are good in their own right, but they certainly don't have the feel of many of the final fantasy games.

Thanks for the summary I tried playing the pixel remastered version and the random leveling up even with a 5x boos just wasn't happening after I played for nearly an hour and a half I was barely getting any level ups. Then someone told me it leveling system is semi random in theory using an item or spell should give you a level up but while the system works for many me with my bad luck after an hour and a half grinding and managed a meager 4 stat increases even with 5x boost to leveling rate. With my bad gaming luck it could take me 2.5 years of grinding to get half way and no game on earth is worth that. Uninstalled it from my account so fast and left a negative review. And NO it isn't like ES those are guaranteed XP boosts for using skills this is just one big RNG leveling up gambling simulator. It reminds me of why I rage quit garbage modern gaming. 1/10 worse FF by a mile even worse than 13 somehow. It's only redeeming factor would be its story which most wont be able to play and get due to having a variety of gaming luck.
Did the previous final fantasy games originally use English names even in the Japanese language? If they did I think that’s a really cool artistic choice from the creator.
Man...poor Leon. Has to walk everywhere and sees those 3 take off into the sky in a badass airship He going to be a villain again, probably introduce coal as an energy source
