I thought Dan just lived in an infinite dark void outside of reality with only computers (and phones) and a camera.. but there were birds in the background so maybe he does live within reality 😔
This is fun. I feel, that phones were not so vulnerable to exploits, but to social engineering. Nowadays, every phone is connected to the Internet. You can code malware to have an exploit kit and scan a phone for vulnerabilities. Hacking was so much easier when people didn't know better. Times have changed.
It's so weird looking at these videos and thinking god it all looks so ancient, and then I realize oh shit I was teenager when this malware was released.
Seeing the Symbian OS design really throws me back to when I got a hand-me-down Nokia N95. A really cool device with sweet features for the day and a double sliding screen.
this came about right as I was really getting into reading about malware and related cybersecurity events. I followed this one via F-Secure's weblog as it emerged, actually.
Oh I remember this. I was in school in the mid 2000s, S60 phones were relatively prevalent and cabir was a constant nuisance. Harmless, but annoying. Used to habitually receive bluetooth messages since it was widely used to share files and messages.
Hey i remember this virus back in 2007! I once read a magazine that highlighted three of the most known mobile phone malware at the time: Cabir, a worm that spams MMS (I forgot its name), and Skull.
I remember this one quite well, or at least a variant of it. I had a phone at home that caught it back then. I remember it being considerably more destructive than what's displayed in the video, as it slowed down the phones to a crawl, and I do remember the pop up. If my memory serves me well, some variants had a pop up saying something like "this is caribe b*tch, you got rekt" and the phone was just unusable after that... Back then I was on high school and it spread like wildfire as the kids got Symbian phones for Christmas and birthdays... I still had my trusty 3310 so no viruses for me haha!
I'm surprised bluetooth viruses did not become more of a thing, probably because of the fact that I think Bluetooth has become more secure over the years
god damn this is too cool, seeing this sample spread across 3 physical devices just like it would back then. you're the reason i got such an interest in computer operating systems, and now i (safely of course) collect malware samples of my own now; to me, it's kind of like a way more dangerous version of stamp collecting, but you just have to know how to handle your samples. i have several BD-Rs full of thousands of samples for archival purposes. you gotta live life on the wild side, sometimes. no, i do not -- and will not -- tell people where to find samples, nor share my own.
I love how simple mobile phones were back in 2004. They looked fun back then also. And now they are starting to come back from the dead. How exciting is that...
Nothing bad would happen, actually. You would only have the malware's sis file (the installer package file in Symbian, like apk on Android or exe on Windows) stored in your phone.
FWIW, T-Mobile offers an LTE CellSpot for a $25 deposit that broadcasts not only LTE, but 3G and 2G signals using your home Internet connection for the back haul to their network.
This was actually spreading at a couple schools in my hometown at least, including mine. I ended up turning bluetooth off as the constant notif spam from the virus trying to spread got annoying.
6:26 Whenever you feel like "damn, how far can something go?", just remind yourself that in 2004, someone screenshotted the display message that Cabir produced... ON A NOKIA N-GAGE.
What if you allow the phone to receive the file, but not install it? Would the infected phone still try to send the message over? Or would nothing happen?

you've been waiting for that one, i can tell. and i approve
Blows my mind how this spreads. Do people really just click “install” from random Bluetooth messages?
Of course they do
I'm sure _some_ do, or this worm wouldn't have spread at all.
Back in the day the concept of a mobile virus was foreign and people are curious. What's the worst that could happen anyway?

Your channel is a joke for recommending Defender, an anti-virus that can be bypassed by a blindfolded malware with its hands tied.

The fact that Nokia doest ask you once, not twice, but thrice if you actually want to install a file is just...magnificent.
