Chrome plating plastic is usually done by depositing copper on it and then electroplating it with the chrome. So you are correct, its copper with chrome on top.
final product looks great! came in looking for insight on how to pell that weird chrome layer. my plan sand, adhesion promoter, prime paint clear. if it was warmer what psi would you have run on gun? what spray gun do you use? I havent done much with alkylyd. What was the reason you used that in between?
I used alkyd on the back for a simple coverage since not going to be seen or noticed. Used the ANI R160T a nice mid sized gun for this small job. On a hotter day say 70F would run medium reduce, full fluid, full fan and adjust the air for best atomization. No gun settings are carved in stone it's whatever works that day. Thanks for watching much appreciated.
@@huntersvejkovsky4720 heating and cooling a few times should release it. Possibly try removing the little bit that's on the back side pulling towards the stuck edges.
I’m working on my 3rd gen grille half chrome was missing cause was coming off I slowly pulled some chrome off now I got it off almost ready for paint beside need go around the edges get remaining chrome off
Man i tried this with some badges and the chrome didnt come off the badges… what am i doing wrong? Sprayed the badges, left it one for a half hour and scrubbed and it didnt come off
@@swc-diygarage Some area's worked a little but that stuff is on there! If I let it cool, it would not come off, so it tried it heated and it distorted the plastic. Any less hot and it was not budging. I appreciate your post. I was hopeful it would work.
I had to do exact same things to that same grille on my 01. Boy was it some work. Cleaning those honeycomb was the worst part for me.
Your absolutely right it's quite a bit of work but I think the end result is worth it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

what does it look like a year later. Did the clear coat peel in the heat and sun damage?
Still looks the same as the day it was painted. Even where I filled it the recesses for the emblem.
How’d you get it off the very edges where it wraps around? That’s the point I’m at
That takes time. Heat gun as needed and a box cutter or utility knife to pick away at it. Or some sand paper to help keep the edge peeling.
@@swc-diygarage do you let the edge cool down completely before working it? It seems to chew through blades on my box cutter lol

Nice. I'm sure it will look great when finished. Thanks for watching.
Does it put off an odor that I have to do it outdoors?
No I does not. Thanks for watching.
I would put an led behind the ram emblem so it glows!
Sure could. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Fine job, thank you for the tutorial
Thanks. It's was a bit of work but well worth it. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful job man
Thanks. Much appreciated.
Did you have to wet sand?
Yes. The final sand before base coat. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Now you need to do the bumper
I was eventually going to do the plastic covers black. Do you think I should do the chrome as well?
Yes it would look better

Are you sure they're plastic chrome and not stainless steel.
@@swc-diygarage from what i read they’re abs plastic supposedly. Just trying to feel it out before i do the same to my 4th gen big horn chrome grill
@@joellasierra my chrome was already lifting. May need to apply more heat with the heat gun.
@@swc-diygarage gonna look up some more video. I heard if you apply too much heat it’ll eat the plastic
doesnt work on my audi grille :(
It's probably made of altra thin stainless steel. Thanks for watching and leaving a commenting
@@swc-diygarage Alright thanks, do you know if its possible to remove? Or maybe i should just sand really well before painting
@@Luuuugn sand it really well then apply some primer. Treat it like any other type of bodywork
BUDDY✌👍
Much appreciated 🙏 💯
Please side mirror chrome
Same principle if the chrome is lifting but if in good condition sand, prime and paint. Thanks for watching much appreciated.
THAT HURRICANE WAS CRAZY DOWN HERE
Prayers for you and your family friend.
I melted the plastic. Hopefully bondo will save me.
Scuff it really good with corse sand paper and filler will stick
Doesn't work on a 3rd gen Toyota 4runner!
That's unfortunate. Thank for watching and commenting.
