DEAN DELRAY’S LET THERE BE TALK (EP 556): Cliff Williams of AC/DC (FULL PODCAST AUDIO)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 жов 2020
- Today I continue my AC/DC celebration with a very rare interview with the man on the Bass guitar since 1977 Mr Cliff Williams.
Cliff joined right after the recording of Let There Be Rock and has been in the band ever since. I always wanted to talk to Cliff about stuff like the recording of Powerage, The Let There Be Rock Film and his life before AC/DC.
Cliff and I also talk all about the new AC/DC record Power Up which comes out Nov 13th. I hope you guys love this episode as much as I loved doing it.
Have a great day and keep the Candles Lit.

Outstanding work mate, you've increased the amount of worthwhile AC/DC interview material out there ten fold in a handful of days
true
I met Cliff in my home Hawaii back in '85 at a rehearsal studio cslled "Wizards Studios" and he was there jamming with his friends. He came outside on a break and he and I talked about his new album at the time "Fly on the Wall." He asked me what I thought about the album. I asked him why THE FLICK album got bad reviews cause I loved that album still do??
I was about 20 yrs old and he was open and down to Earth. I got to ask him a lot of questions about Angus without looking stupid or sounding too Star struck! Cliff was a really cool guy Aloha Cliff thanks for the memory!! Tony.
🤟🏾😎
Flick of the Switch is one of their best albums ever
Can't say how excited I have to have my heroes back. Phil and Cliff WELCOME BACK Cliff is the master bass man can't wait for the new CD
"Phil has THE SWING". Don´t think anything else needs to be said . Bunch of geniuses!!!
Cliff & Phil...the backbone of AC/DC.
Dean, would you consider hosting an AC/DC "PWR-UP" listening party?
I love Flick of the Switch and had it signed by the man himself, Mr. Williams, back in 2002. Also one of my favourite albums of theirs for the reasons you mention. Amazing songs an' all!
For us to notice, Cliff is giving "Power Up" a very high, special meaning. As Back in Black was for Bon, this is for Mal. Shoot....
it's awesome
I would certainly read a Cliff Williams autobiography if he wrote one.
If he remembered anything...
Cliff used to live in Fort Myers Florida. He used to come into my Publix a lot. He always stopped and said hello to me. He is definitely a cool nice guy.
He still lives part time inFort Myers. Cliff is all 1st class and down to earth. Very nice gentleman and kind to everyone.
Dean’s reaction when Cliff tells him that Phil used to drive the station wagon is just priceless. Could tell right away from his genuine excitement and amazement that this guy is a true, real fan. I can’t imagine how cool this must have been for Dean. Great job!
These will go down in history as the greatest AC/DC interviews of all time. We are so lucky to have you hosting these with all the right questions from a true fan !
This is gonna be the BEST THING ever, if we're gonna have an inteview of almost an hour with The Rudd in the next days, it'll be the first time ever for that, so if that's gonna happen...Oh man, I've been waiting for this day for a loong time!!!!
Dead set mate!
That'll be too deadly eh!!
👍👍
Since the court case.....sorry Phil.
Absolutely outstanding! Cliff is a beast! Our bass player cites Cliff as one of his biggest influences... Simple, direct, aggressive and chordal when required.
Thank you, Dean! Great interview!! #PWRUP
Dean, for what it's worth, I also was always fascinated with the backing vocals routine live. It was so much fun to watch Mal & Cliff running up towards the mics and than away from 'em. Especially if you watch from the seats slightly above the stage, but you're not too far away from the stage either. The SYNCHRONICITY of it was the coolest thing. It adds up to the already over-the-top brilliant show. And the TIMING too; always a mere split second before the chorus.
Huge inspiration for us!!
DEAN YOU HAVE TO GET THOSE PHOTOS 😆
Cliff (and Phil, too) are like umpires: nobody talks about them if they're doing their job correctly.
I keep saying it, keeping it simple is more difficult than you think. Which explains why whenever you listen to some AC/DC covers, 99% of the time the band just can't pull it off...
dean you nailed it...the look of cliff and Mal stepping up for the backing vocals is iconic...so unique to this band.
I saw AC/DC in 1978 during the Powerage tour. It was on August 26, 1978 live at The Shaboo in Mansfield Connecticut. Bon Scott, Angus Young and Cliff Williams were 6 feet away from me. That was a life changing concert for me. Best band in the world since the 1970’s. Great interview Dean. Pure gold.
Flick of the switch is a great album! Thank you sir for acknowledging that masterpiece!
"Depends what day it is". Your favourite songs change, as do your favourite albums. Or, it depends what YEAR it is. To me , as far as Brian-era is concerned, it was Flick of the Switch for a long time, so again, Dean, I agree with you. Currently it's For Those About to Rock, but I never understood why Flick didn't get the recognition - not least in terms of sales - it deserved. I'd been lucky enough to have met Mr. Williams in person back in 2002, and had my Flick of the Switch (!) copy signed. Ever so polite and down to Earth as we know all of 'em are. I remember telling him "Let's have Acca Dacca still goin' in ten years'. That being 2002, they went waaaay beyond that, thankfully. Speaking of albums, I thought (and still do) Black Ice was another true gem. Outstanding album! If Pwr Up is anywhere near, than it must be brilliant, I daren't say (it could be) better, because sadly Mal is not (physically) there anymore, not taking anything away from Stevie. As far as Bon-era goes, which I sadly all but missed, having discovered the band as late as 1979, my favourite album is anybody's favourite, and it's Powerage of course. Cheers for another great interview, Dean!
AC/DC the reason i love Rock and Roll 🎸
You're the luckiest dude in the world... now.. we NEED a Phil interview... need to know how that man thinks
Thankyou mate.. as a lifelong fan it was so great to hear a true fan ask some questions that we’ve all wanted to hear. The Brian and Angus was sensational. This is the icing and Phil would be the cherry on top. Well done mate. Thanks again.
Do you consider an interview with Stevie? I'd love to hear him talking about playing the rhythm guitar since his style is so similar to Mals and there's pretty much nothing out there of Mal talking about his playing. Nice work by the way, these interviews really are an enrichment
I second this- It would be so cool to hear from Stevie!

Bravo, Dean; the depth and breadth of your skills as a host and interlocutor are on full display with these two AC/DC interviews: with Angus and Brian, the less-is-more, prime the pump and let the lads talk. With Cliff, you did an excellent job guiding him with questions to get to the gold. Each guest calls for their own approach-your skill to get the goods is the mark of a total pro. Thank you for bringing us these remarkable, historical vignettes.
I always wanted to get someone to pick the brain of one of my favorite bass guitarist, let alone from my all time favorite band! To say that I am excited about the new AC/DC record is a MASSIVE understatement. Well...I’m ready to rock, cause I’m a Heatseaker!
Nice one Dean. I love Cliff, the unsung hero of the band imo
You are sir, me being a lifetime AC/DC from '76 seeing them 48 times these interview's are from a likewise superfan, I know you know what they mean, they are one the hugest parts of my life , pulled me in with their power and live shows, used to dress and rock out in school uniform with cardboard guitar are Truly Rock out at half of those shows 😎 met Angus Brian Malcolm Phil and Cliff too, backstage last show of 1980 in Lille France , yeah that year me and I swear just those 5 and Peter mensch in a caravan just talking, for 20 minutes they were asking me why I travelled from London to see them in lille with a cardboard guitar , lifetime memories 😎
I spent many summers as a kid in the North Carolina mountains. It's fascinating that Cliff resides there for part of the year. Excellent interview!
Damn Dean, you ain't done yet? Now you got Cliff? You're a boss, man.
Criminally underrated bassist. The man Brendan O'Brien said it himself, that Cliff could easily do session work if he'd never joined the band...
Thank you for taking your time for bringing this interviews to life from the members of AC/DC. Every interview from you that I watched thus far have been wonderful. You outta do Stevie Young, if you have not already!
Best interviews with the band. You keep them in their comfort zone and they speak. And you have the best questions to ask. We want more of them Dean.... More.... MORE!!!!
I think the engineer for HtH and up to FotS was Tony Platt. He also recorded the bell for Hell's Bells
One of the biggest compliments the music industry can give to a band, and a producer is the fact that a huge percentage of the sound guys that run the board for live gigs, this includes all genres of music, use Back in Black the album to dial in their sound. I did not know this until a few years ago. But I always used to use Shoot to Thrill when I got a new sound system in my car or in the house to see how good it performed. And once again congratulations Dean, great interview!
AC/DC MILLENIUM!!!!
POR SIEMPRE ROCK &ROLL!!!
Damn, you’re killing it. Getting the guys to talk for more than a few minutes, let alone an hour, it’s what I wanted since I became a fan.
Thank you Dean for that great Interview. Cliff seems to be such a humble and nice guy. I hope he will be ok to play a bit more than "some shows" ;-)
I didn't know you before, but i think many AC/DC Fans around the world know you now. Cheers from Germany
I highly doubt you'll be here to read these comments Cliff, but on the off chance... If you end up on a world tour I will be out there, a head in a sea of faces that will forever appreciate what you are allowing us to experience for the last time. I can also appreciate the weariness in your voice. You've done a stellar job. Truly stellar.
Flick of the Switch is amazing, I agree. Might be the most underrated album of all time for me because everyone shits on it and I just love it. First vinyl I chose to play when I moved into my house!
My fav
Fly on the wall cRyiNg in corner 😭
Cliff is such a humble man
I wonder now that Angus is running the band, that he is allowing the other band members to talk and open up more? You never hear of a Cliff William's interview. Is Phil Rudd next ?
He is
Cliff, Flick of the switch is fucken smokin'. Truly badass r n' r.
fantastic interview... i love FOtS too! was my first concert been an ac/dc fan my whole life Ive never heard Cliff talk this much what a great guy he is... sure hope you got Phil coming up soon
AC/DC, RUSH, KISS, those bands are the last of the truly legendary bands that built their fan base the old fashioned way, from the ground up, by touring and playing to the masses. The way that Brian Johnson completed AC/DC and the way Neil Peart solidified his position in RUSH, the stars don’t align themselves that much but when they do we get truly great musicians! It sucks that our musical heroes get old, retire and/or pass away too soon, but the catalog of music they’ve left will be an inspiration to the next generation of musicians.
It's so true!
Great Interview again! Now you clean the air with Cliff. Keep Rockin' mate! Salute from Brazil
Fun stories about that Powerage tour at the Oakland Day On the Green-that was my first time seeing them. I remember a plane flying over the stadium with a banner that said AC/DC Rock and Roll Damnation
Oh boy, this just gets better and better. This is insane Dean. Thanks so much for this!!
Another amazing AC/DC interview! I’m a lifelong AC/DC fan and now I am also a fan of yours. Looking forward to checking out the new album, it sounds like it’s going to be awesome! Thank you so much for this!
Mate you don’t know how good these interviews mean to a guy living in AC/DC home town of Sydney my mum used to work in a club they used to play in the 70’s she used to make sure they had drinks and food back in day awesome work 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Your interviews with AC/DC are so mutch appreciated, all the best from an AC/DC fan since 1984 here in Norway :-)
Another killer Interview, outstanding. This and the Brian and Angus interview are my first podcasts and these are probably 2 of the most detailed and well done interviews of the band, Rock on🤘
So good to hear Cliff!! More!!
Discoved Dean thanks to the Brian/Angus interview. You're just absolutely great, man. Just about to listen to the Cliff Williams interview now... Keep up the good work, buddy!
Dean Delrizzay killing it on the podcast scene
These interviews are so fucking good brother ! Awesome work - cheers from NZ !
You're saving 2020 Dean!
Exactly!!
This too me is the pinnacle of entertainment this year 😎
Dean, you didn't let us down at all. These interviews totally lift me up, man. Thanks and keep at it 🤘
Great interview Dean. AC/DCs my favorite band and I'm really enjoying the interviews.
This was an awesome interview with Cliff Williams. I would love to hear an interview with Phil Rudd !!!!
Man, this was one of the best interviews I've ever heard. Dean, you keep smoking these questions out of the park, and getting Cliff to say hearing James Jamersons bass coming through the walls from a STAX recording is what got his start, was fuxking Incredible!!!!. Him and Cliff have laid so many bricks with their rhythm section, they've built mansions. And then hearing him Saying Roseland NYC, was one of his favorite places to play!!! As a lifelong Ac/DC fan ,musician and working at Webster Hall in NY, that was bonkers. I'm so very happy for you getting these interviews man. DELRAYSIN HELL IN NY!!!
Totally agree with you on Flick of the Switch. An extremely UNDERRATED album if ever there was one! Guess which album cover I chose to be signed by Cliff himself! Lucky to have met him once. The only bandmember I'd met thus far, and he was just the nicest guy! But, hey, we all know all of 'em are!! And, YES, the white sleeve is also the easiest to sign, right? :) :) :)
fire
My first concert ever was 1983 Flick of the Switch tour Nassau Coliseum. Been a fan since 1980. Saw couple more times over the years last being the Black Ice tour.
the best
For Malcolm, we hear you Cliff. Power Up!
Excellent interview. I’m hoping we get one with Phil. 🤞
Good job Dean, very interesting without being too fan boyish. Never heard Cliff talk so much so thanks for your work man.
Another top interview👍
On the Let there be Rock film...i noticed Angus was playing his guitar through a lead and not his wireless set up
Mate,'High Voltage' in the film..👌👍
Yeah his system went down few days later. And that was a mess for the shooting etc. But he did rock
Nice!! Cliff is amazing!
Another great one, Dean, thanks and well done! Thank you also to Cliff, Ang and Brian, respectively, for taking the time, of course. But then, they, like all of us, must have a lot of it on their hands given the (surreal) situation. If anything, it resulted in probably THE best interviews with the lads ever! Certainly the most the THOROUGH ones!
The most unpretentious band ever. Great interview!
thank you
Flick of the switch and Fly on the wall are really good rockin' albums..pure acca dacca...honestly,the least best sounding album,...is Blow up your video...does anyone else agree?
For Phil's hard hitting drums...listen to 'Touch too much' on Bonfire!!!...
Badlands,Brain shake,Send for the man....Stand up..👍👍👍👌👌👌
Totally agree! Flick is underrated and Fly is very underrated in my opinion. Fly is an album that best captures their live sound for a studio album. I think their worst album is Blow up your Video...nothing on that album does anything for me.
Love these interviews - and great to hear the details about Cliff, his gear and playing with a pick!
Another great interview! Love the discussion of the live, backing vocal walk-up and retreat. I've always loved that too about the live performances
Thanks Dean! This is the kind of interview that long time fans totally appreciate. Great job, and so awesome to hear Cliff share as much as he did.
Awesome job 👍 one my favorite players. Great interview man.
Great interview, so good to hear Cliff talk so much. Power up the World! Thanks
amazing!!!! now get phil rudd and get them back on together after the album release!!!!!!! and get some fan questions from twitter if ya will;)
All I can say is Thank you so much ❤️ Loved the interview 🙃😊
This is great Dean! Cheers once again for being able to to speak with these giants of rock. Cliff is the man. I love all the bassists of AC/DC, even Paul Matters the bassist in the early line-up that has just passed. Cliff though, has logged so many miles and hours with the band, much respect to him for it. Proud of ya Dean, keep the candles lit! Ciao)))
Incredible man! Just need Phil now!
CLIFF CANNOT QUIT AC\DC... he is a core member!
Please Cliff... I really hope he can stick it out for at least 40-50 more shows...
Fantastic Dean! So glad you got these interviews! cheers!
Dean, as a fellow AC/DC superfan as well, these long in depth interviews with the 4 members have been amazing!!! And as an added bonus, you had Bill Burr (my favorite comedian) too. Can't wait for the Nov 13th album release to totally redeem 2020 for us all.
Thanks Dean, what a treat! Two epic podcasts in one week.
If there's a new one with Phil Rudd coming I'm about to lose my mind
Same
Just uploaded:)
@@tankrulez615 yes I listened to it yesterday, probably have never heard Phil talk this much, great interview.
That was a fantastic interview Dean. Well done mate!
Fantastic interview..a true fan!!!
you don’t see really often an interview of Cliff! great job man. regards from Buenos Aires🤘🏻
What? Cliff did a gig playing Ronnie Lane's bass guitar? I wonder if it was the Zemaitis? So cool to hear these bits of history.
amazing Dean...spending the day catching up here...so fun!
Bloody awesome interview!
Great, thanks from France !
Wow!!! So many insights! Great interview!
Most interesting AC/DC interview ever
Yes!! Thank you Dean 🤘🤘
Eddie Kramer gets a mention. He had odd ideas and one of his suggestions was that Acca Dacca do a cover of "Gimme Some Lovin'" by Spencer Davis Group. Why of course the "minds didn't meet"!!! To say the least.
I just realized that the full Rock Or Bust Line-Up has never played a Show together. Anyway, I would love to see Mark Evans if Cliff can't go on tour. He was fantastic on Dirty Deeds and Let There Be Rock.
Mark Evans is Awesome with ROSE TATTOO !
I’ve been saying this for years. If Cliff wanted to truly retire from touring then they have to call Mark Evans.. he’s the man!
@@djentyman4002 He's also a familiar face within the AC/DC family. He still enjoys a lot of respect from the Fans.
If you read Mark's book, the shit he gave them, (getting drunk at the bar instead of showing for rehearsal, picking on Angus)....it ain't happening. Not to mention maybe the main reason he was replaced--they needed someone who sang backup vocals.
@@mrmustard4478 All that stuff happened 40+ years ago. They were nothing more but Teenagers back then. I'm sure that he has his shit together now.
Dean! Thank you so much!!! Brand new fan here!
Excellent interview Dean!
Ohh yeaaah, will you interview Phil?
Awesome interview Dean!
