Never thought about lowering the pickups first but that tip made the intonation much more accurate..Thank's for the tip. When the pickups are all the way down, my tuner settles down too. I just raised my pickups until my tuner started dancing then slowly backed down until the tuner steadied again.. The tone sounds great and every note on the fret board is right on. My Strat thank's you for the advice.
Amazing. Been playing for upwards of 10 years. I've watched countless vidoes for repair, sound, tricks, and general maintenance, and this takes the cake. By far the best video I've ever watched for guitar knowledge!
I must admit, Im another one alive example. Around 15 years of experience and now I have found simple physical explanation of the whole package of rules useful during Intonation adjustment. Thanks for This!
My first year picking up a guitar ever and i am in my 50's. Thank you lock down pandemic. Learning tons and tons on so many levels. Thank you for the easy to grasp information for a new player such as myself.
Congratulations! It’s never too late. I was 58 now 69. Still consider myself a beginner who can do some intermediate things but due to my pained fingers and illness I can play only a couple of songs. lol Guess I should have put down the trumpet in the band and borrowed the guitarist’s guitar. I’m having fun and that is what counts. I learned all the fix it up stuff though and that’s lots of fun. Keep playing.
I have just replaced the bridge on my Mexican strat, adjusted the action and now it’s time to set the intonation based on your guidance. Really helpful, I learned a great deal here, thank you!
Hey Galeazzo, I have been playing guitar for along time now & I want to let you know I think your videos are great. Here I was impressed to see how you note the effect of gravity on the neck & how this affects intonation & tuning. Many people starting out don't realise this significant variable, but it's the 1st thing you talk about. You are helping the world's guitar players sound better, thanks brother!
This is hands down the best video I have seen on intonation! It was really helpful that you explained the theory behind the adjustments while you demonstrated them. Many thanks from Ireland!
Very good, I have been seting up strats for over thirty years. You explain it very well. There's always something new when you see different luthiers performing a setup. Thank you, you are good!
I agree with the last post you received 3 years ago, it reads "Amazing. Been playing for upwards of 10 years. I've watched countless videos for repair, sound, tricks, and general maintenance, and this takes the cake. By far the best video I've ever watched for guitar knowledge!" But i have been playing guitar for 48 years now. Awesome video dude.
Very clear vision on how to do intonation on stratocaster, i have squier stratocaster since 2006, but never think of doing proper set up, just play and during Corona pandemic, i think it was a good idea to give my lovely axe special treatment. Hooe you will always ve fine, you really did a good job. May God bless you.
You showed me how to solve my intonation issue, saved me the expense of a professional luthier, taught me useful skills, and enabled me to avoid putting my Strat in the guitar hospital. It's also really satisfying to be able to do more than change strings and use a tuner. Thank you!
You really took the mystery out of intonation for me. I had imagined it was something only a "Master Luthier" could be capable of doing! Thanks, just going to watch your "Truss rod adjustment" video now and I might be able to save myself some money by being able to set up my own guitars instead of a music store doing it for me.
I just finished setting up my new guitar thanks to your videos man. You're helping so many people like me around the world who are watching your older videos even in 2021. Thanks a lot! :)
It makes me so very happy to see you recommending to pull the sharpness out of a string rather than to use the tuning machine. Stretching the strings is such an important part of getting the guitar settled and prepared to hold a tuning. Thank you for sharing your great love of music with all of us here. Warm regards - John
Sick off paying top dollar for crap set ups by so called luthiers ! After 20 years of going Iam gona give it a go my self thanks for all these videos, give me the confidence to try it myself, and dispels all the "dark arts" that people don't tell you
One thing I notice after intonation, is that my some of my notes when playing chords are a little sharp.... so I adjust again until the chords aren't sharp anymore, and everything is still in tune. That's when I'm finished intonating. It's obsessive but I can't stand flat or sharp notes on chords. All your guitar knowledge is very helpful, thank you.
You gave a very detailed account on how to set the intonation on the guitar. Before I saw your video, I thought I could never accomplish this task. This will actually be my first time attempting this, but I'm confident that everything will be alright!
Absolutely the best instructions ever for this! I guarantee many major acts out there today are not even coming close to this with their guitar techs on the road or in studio even. Thank you very much!
Greeting from Liverpool, UK. Excellent video Mr Fruda, thanks for taking the time to make it and giving other people the benefit of your experience. I like some of the tips you gave such as supporting the neck if working on a bench, something I never really thought about, and the way you explained all the theory aspects when setting up guitar intonation was very good. Now I'm going to watch at all your other videos for some more tips. Again, thank you for your time and experience. Ciao.
This usually happens on some guitars (even high branded priced ones) equipped with two pivots instead that 6 screws tremolo when, due to the softness of the wood used for the body, the two pivots bend toward the headstock thus leaving less room for the intonation sscrews to correct the intonation. In this case you should try to remove or reduce the length of the springs that hold the intonation screws or take the guitar to a technician that solve the pivots bending.
Great vid but one thing you could also discuss is when intonation won't work. The reason is almost certainly a nut misplacement. It is too close or too far from the first fret and you will NEVER get the guitar in tune until the nut is positioned as if it was fret 0. Very good vid!
Thank you for your excellent video demonstration. Your substantial amount of step-by-step detail was done in a very concise manner, without wasting time with a lot of irrelevant detail. It was obviously very well thought out, and you have seemingly done this many times. Very enjoyable, and informative.
Another fantastic video, Mr. Frudua. So much to digest. Also, I suggest turning on captions if you want to have a good laugh. Let's just say it struggles.
Bravissimo, un video davvero utilissimo, argomenti spiegati con la chiarezza di chi sa di cosa sta parlando. Suono da 40 anni eppure ho imparato nuove cose guardandolo. Grazie e complimenti. Pasino
This is exactly what I am insisting on and I explain at the beginning of this video: how to rest the guitar before you set it up so that there is no difference if you'd do this in playing position.
generally speaking measurements should be made in the playing position . there is a little sag in the strings but often the magnetic pull makes a bigger difference
+Ricky Anthony mine is the same where there is no change, and ive already moved the saddles back as far as they go. new strings and all. and the neck is straight. the only note that are fine are A and High E.
Some people say to cut the spring in half or remove it to get a little more adjustment. I have a similar problem with my low E. I think it's just that the string vibrates and oscillates much more when picked. So it needs to be higher than the other strings and ends up having to be quite high with the saddle further back to add length to compensate. I just managed it by mashing my saddle spring.
i removed the (G saddle) spring on my strat. mine is microtonally fretted, so the action needs to be a bit higher. but the bridge wasn't designed to give that much intonation leeway.
why would you lower the pickups to intonate the guitar if you don't play the guitar that way... your intonation will be off after you raise the pickups back up. (food for thought)
AchillesXI why would you want the pickup magnets to pull every note sharp? I understand what you're saying but you can't compensate for the magnetic pull in the tuning of the guitar. Magnetic field isn't strong enough and you'll get a warbling sound.
Yeah but he's saying to lower it even lower than how you'd actually play it (which is presumably before it starts to get warbly), then raise it back up to normal height after intonation, where again it will be affected a little more by the pickup's magnets. I was thinking the same thing that AchillesXI asked. You don't raise it back to make the notes sharp or ruin the string's ability to vibrate, you just raise it back to normal. I would intonate this way instead of lowering them first.
As far as I've understood (and what we can hear in the video), higher pickup does not sharpen the note, it destabilizes string vibration (wobbly sound), making tuner reading unstable.
Nenad Vićentić you are exactly correct. the issue with pickups being too high is not so much that it changes the intonation, but rather it interferes with or destabilizes vibration. thus, making correct intonation much more difficult to achieve due to vibration interference.
this is the best video on UA-cam.. thank you so much for explaining this.. the guitar shop guys where I stay don't know anything about guitar setup.. the guy was adjusting string height to do intonation..
Yeah, I thought the same thing. It's almost like this step is pointless. I know the magnets in the pickup can pull on a string causing it to buzz and ultimately affect its intonation. But it seems that would be something you'd always want to avoid. So, yeah. What's the point?
It appears that intonation is the result of the string length (obvious when you see the adjustment). The pickup altering the pitch is an effect on the sound that you want to remove while getting the length correct. If the pickup height is truly altering the sound in a bad way, then that is a different adjustment (isolate each problem). I screwed up my intonation many years ago thinking that the hex bolts were just tuners :) I am now about to finally fix my intonation. I know I have an intonation problem because if I tune the 12th fret perfectly, the further away you get from that fret the worse the tuning is. My top 2 strings are pretty bad while the other strings are a bit better. As I understand it, this is a perfect example of bad intonation (string length).
Richard Lopez / the pickups can and will pull the strings out of tune if u lower them..you have a higher success of properly intonating your guitar. then readjust pickup height and if ur having issues u can eliminate intonation bc u know its been done right .
In my opinion you are the best at what you do on you tube, I've put together quite a few strats now and everything I've needed to know I've picked up from your posts, thank you .
Good video, but, you NEVER EVER NEVER EVER NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER set-up or tune your guitar when it's laying on it's back. It WILL BE out of tune when you lift it into a playing position. Try it.
+cancionini I found it worked good by sitting with the guitar in the normal playing position. You just adjust it the same way, but instead of it lying on it's back.

An excellent video. After 30 years of tuning, your pick up height demonstration is fantastic. Subscribed and made a donation. Great stuff - keep it up.
I will be so happy with your video about pickups height, because all of my friends and me are setting guitars by your way and we wait for pickups video :)
Watched many, many intonation setup videos and this was the only one that targeted a particular problem I had haunting me for a long time with my strat. I could not get the low E string in proper intonation, no matter what I did with bridge adjustments. Truss rod set good, string height set good, new strings, etc. still out of tune at 12th fret. Finally the light bulb went on, and noticed how close my pickups were adjusted to close to the lower strings, backed them off to proper height, and wella, in tune. Although I saw this video after I found out myself, lol, this video is the only one I found that mentions this overlooked adjustment. Great vid :)
come back sir, I like your videos, not only you telling me how to do this, but you are also helping me understand what am doing, come back bro we need this kind of videos on UA-cam.
Thx. so much for sharing your knowledge. I have now setup my tele & strat to near perfect intonation and action that feels really comfortable. Couldn't have done it without your help!
I love your videos! You explain everything so much in depth and detail, demonstrate well, it's just MILES better than any videos on youtube! Can't wait to try using these tips on my strat! I have been having intonations issues lately and it's making me crazy! Thank you again!!!
Thank you! I just watched this video on my smart TV and I had to come here to comment! You are an excellent, thorough presenter! Best of luck with the channel!
By far, the best tutorial videos on UA-cam! Mr. Frudua, you sir, are a great human being! (by the way, I just love your accent!) Thank you so much for these great lessons! -Shango
Fantastic video! Really makes one understand all the various factors that effect the intonation of a guitar, which are not immediately apparent! Wonderful!!!
I'm watching this is 2020 - and it is still the perfect guide to intonation of a Strat-style bridge

What do I do when I reached the limit of the saddle and is still not perfectly in tune?
That happens to me on the 5th and 6th strings (the lowest)

That or old/bad strings....which was the case with my guitar, the strings that came with my Kramer guitar were busted already. :)

+Quentin James You only initially do it for the precision of the intonation. Then after that you're set to tune in playing position.

Fantastic video! Really makes one understand all the various factors that effect the intonation of a guitar, which are not immediately apparent! Wonderful!!!
