Im 58, in my life as a mechanic i have only remembered 2 engines that were in this condition when i took them apart. 200k mile engines.
I am talking about still clearly seeing the hone in the cylinders and beautiful crank journals and bearings.
L28 6 cylinder out of an Datsun 280zx.
And an n/a 2J out of an early lexus sc300.
New bearings, piston rings, valve seals, and valve jobs on both engines. They both still run great.
The 2J is in my 74 Datsun 260z now. Added a turbo to it of course.
The L28 I sold to a friend to pay for my 2J swap. 👍🏾

I bought a 2001 IS300 with 278k miles two months ago with slow acceleration issue for $1000 dlls, the first thing I did was to check the engine's compression and wow... 175 psi on all 6 cylinders for a car with that milleage and for being 23 yrs old for me thats amazing.

@@dallasflyboy Man it took all I could do, to keep this car from when I had been married. To having kids, to getting divorced, to filing for bankruptcy, to different living arrangements. My oldest kid just started college.
I still kept this car. 😁
And after all of that, in a year I will be semi retired, living on a small property I bought. The z car is coming with me.
Nobody is taking my toy away from me except when I want to get rid of it. 👍🏾

Still kicking myself to this day, that I was offered a free 2JZ-GE VVTI and I turned it down. It would have made an awesome 3.0 bottom end for my 1JZ VVTI, but I was too lazy to go get it - from Geelong to Warragul, I thought it wasn't worth the effort.
My 1JZ makes 550rwhp, and has great response, so it's not all bad, but that extra 500cc would have made it even better.
So very much looking forward to seeing how this turns out Scotty. I suspect you won't regret it at all. My dad would have followed this build with interest. He died in November last year from Leukemia. He loved these kind of builds done on the cheap making Frankenstein engines.

0:50 0:55 collapsing an oil filter is a sign that the filter bypass valve is blocked. Some filters have a built in valve ( example Ford 302 / Chrysler 318 ) while some filters rely on the an engine mounted valve ( Chevy 350 ) . Reading the filter spec sheet is a must when mix / matching or installing remote filters.

Looks like a sweet engine there - wondering if those flaky carbon deposits were from running with a bung PCV causing excess oil to burn in the cylinders? I had to replace the PCV on my 2JZ Soarer twice in the 9 years I owned it - both times it fixed blue smoke from the tailpipe.

    • @bobroberts2371

That on top of the pistons is carbon, it’s the carbon layer built up in the engine, it tends to do that if it’s gets damp through humidity in the atmosphere and then allowed to dry right out, like in a nice dry workshop for a year or so.

      @Beer_Dad1975 Рік тому

Could be from excessive oil burning - possibly due to PCV being stuck closed or other problems with the emissions control equipment - common problems on 2JZs & would be my guess given the flaky nature of the carbon build up, rather than the stuck on gum you normally get from rich running - another problem could be a bad dizzy or dizzy rotor causing misfires across all cylinders - though again, that'd normally produce sticky deposits - and more likely to get fixed as it's obvious something is wrong.

I don't know how plentiful it is down under, but if you can't get E, I would run a really high octane race fuel. Either way, you know how to build an engine and how to run it.

And most engines are good until you bring in to much power down low, just asking for them to bend.
