I guess you missed the part in the lyrics where it says "she lies and says she's in love with him" it's literally about a woman staying in an abusive relationship. lol.
Waiting, watching the clock It's four o'clock, It's got to stop Tell him, take no more She practices her speech As he opens the door, she rolls over Pretends to sleep as he looks her over She lies and says she's in love with him, Can't find a better man She dreams in color, She dreams in red, Can't find a better man Can't find a better man Can't find a better man Oh.. Talking to herself There's no one else who needs to know She tells herself Memories back when she was bold and strong And waiting for the world to come along Swears she knew it, Now she swears he's gone She lies and says she's in love with him, Can't find a better man She dreams in color, She dreams in red, Can't find a better man She lies and says she still loves him, Can't find a better man She dreams in color, She dreams in red, Can't find a better man Can't find a better man Can't find a better man She loved him, yeah She don't want to leave this way She needs him, yeah That's why she'll be back again Can't find a better man (can't find a better man) Can't find a better man (can't find a better man) Can't find a better man (can't find a better man) Can't find a better... man...

This literally happens all the time. A women might not be “ in love” with a good man, but they learn to love them over time because of their character.
Eddie Vedder and Tracy Chapman are two artists whose voices are full of emotion, and you can feel all the different emotions in their singing. Their voices are so expressive that you can experience the stories just listening to their songs. You feel the emotion in their voices and you can hear their connection to the lyrics. I bet the "Happy Birthday" song would top charts if sung by either one of these performers. Both are masters of their craft and they are truly connected to their work. Bring back these types of artists!!
Crazy isn't it? I use to listen to songs when I was younger and thought that would suck if I felt the same pain that people have listening to the same song. Then life comes crashing down and I find myself coming back listening to them. It's comforting though that music is here for us.
There is always a better man, or in my case, a better women out there for you. You can ALWAYS find a better person. You are not trapped. Don't lie to him. Just leave.
Just heard this in Walmart over their store radio and five people around me started singing it at the same time when the lyrics started. That’s how good this song is.

Hey Ed, I used to practice scream-singing to this song and working on vocal attenuating because this song used to pump me up when I was just a young adult. You're a big man Ed. Thanks for the years.
man. pearl jam opened me up to grunge but i remember as i was just getting into them i went to skip this song, i thought it was too slow for my liking but my mom, who grew up in the 80s told me to wait. she liked this song. i didnt know she listened to pj so i restarted it and fell in love with it. this is one of my most favorite songs by them. the lyrics hit so hard when i first really listened. this song will always remind me of her and now i never ever skip over it.
Born in 70, went to high school in the 80s and experienced some of the best music ever - Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, just to name a few, but I still wish I'd gotten to see Led Zeppelin preform!
Add Elderly Woman Black Black (MTV unplugged) Even flow Even flow (MTV unplugged) Jeremy (MTV unplugged) Alone Corduroy Daughter (live Lisbon, Portugal 5-23-00) Just Breathe
This song can be interpreted as either a survival strategy for a woman who is trapped or the deception of 1-way commitment that is unfair to the man. It can even be both. Such is the complexity of life.
I had a teacher in highschool that said music of that era was made for longevity. The mainstream music of today's youth only lasts a month or two, and it's either forgotten about or considered old.
It's hard to believe this is 30 years ago! This song always reminds me of my best friend at the time. Her husband was so abusive and degrading to her and she stayed everytime. What can you do especially when there being told they'll never be loved by anyone else, sad part is I saw her on Facebook and he's still exactly the same way! Why would anyone be so desperate for companionship to stay with that. I don't understand.
I've been listening to this genre in the background all these years. Believe it or not I never knew Pearl Jam sang this song and many others classics. In the 80s, and 90s I was just a stupid young adult indulging in different genres and scenes. I had some great times, it was all fun but I paid the price. The music we listen to influences the culture we live in. My culture was not very productive. Fun yeah, self reflecting? zero! Today I'm listening to these Pearl Jam songs and thinking what if I had listened to these songs and taken in what's actually important in life. Would I have cherished my loved ones more? Would I have sorted out what's actually important in life? These songs are like blueprints man. Written by others that have suffered so maybe we don't have to. Instead I just took a more ignorant path that has led to nothing but pain.
Imho, one of the keys to life is to learn to not to depend on someone else to make you feel whole. The minute you understand that? That is the last moment anyone can hurt you again. ☮
My dad went to the hospital today. He had a stroke and is recovering this is his favorite song. Every Time I here it I think of him it is almost hard to hear.
And again we are joined together in harmonic musical of special memories of our youth and tunes that will live for eternity...pj's existence is my existence...
There is something so complimenting about the Hammond Organ with Rock Music. It wasn't even invented to fit in with that genre of music. I'm sure this and many other songs sound decent without it, but adding it makes the song sound so much better.
Now, every single time i hear thus song it hits so different since i met what thought was a twin flame. They were ALL placeholders. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Love you ...eddie😊
I remember one time my ex was being his usual asshole self and this song came on after a fight. He said “ is this your song?” And started laughing . The asshole was physically , mentally, sexually and verbally abusive to me for 3 years . I’m so glad I left him .
Oorah!!!!! You NEVER should have to go through anything like that. I agree, what an ASSHOLE! He sounds like someone who thinks he's a badass. Real bad!!
I'm actually Mona's husband, but if he's afraid to talk to me, she'd have a few choice words for him, also. Anyway, men like that give us all a bad name. Sorry you had to go through that. Mickey Hawks.
When i was 16 was involved with a 22 yr old who ended up being incarcerated for 4.5 years for what he did to me. The worst part was that i was the 4th girl he'd raped and abused. First 3 all reported. He only got 6 months time for each of those 3 lives he wrecked. There were others besides us, found out later. When you grow up being hurt, pain feels like home. It's a long road to mental and emotional healing, but it's possible. Good men exist. Thank you for bringing awareness. Doesn't matter how long it's been, your music reaches deep for me.
While taking a break at the studio I listened to Sheryl Crow's "Strong Enough" and realized the man in this song is the kind of strong enough man she's talking about. "Better Man" came out a year after the Crow song and I think it's one of the greatest recordings in history, for the words, the dynamics of the bands performance, and Vedder's delivery. A woman settled, maybe she had a kid or two with this loser. She could've done so much better. He's a good provider, but he's cold to her. he goes to work in the morning and comes home to sleep. Maybe it's her birthday or their anniversary and he forgot. She makes dinner, he's late again, dinner get's cold. Suddenly the door flies open, he has a huge grin on his face and under one arm a wrapped present, he sweeps her off her feet saying "Have I told you how much I love you lately!?" she melts, he carries her off to the bedroom and slams the door shut. There is no better man.
This song reminds me of my sister passed away 3 years I show this song to her she really likes this a lot & my 3 brothers passed away and my sister wants me to sing this song to her

man. pearl jam opened me up to grunge but i remember as i was just getting into them i went to skip this song, i thought it was too slow for my liking but my mom, who grew up in the 80s told me to wait. she liked this song. i didnt know she listened to pj so i restarted it and fell in love with it. this is one of my most favorite songs by them. the lyrics hit so hard when i first really listened. this song will always remind me of her and now i never ever skip over it.
A beautiful, haunting, gutting song. What could be better?
56y/o here. Still one of the best memories of my life is seeing this band at Randalls Island. Eddie Vedder is a genius.
Eddie Vedder is a lyrical genius
One of the BEST PEARL JAM SONGS EVER ❤️❤️❤️
Hello Jennifer, how are you doing today, it's my pleasure meeting you here.
My favorite Pearl Jam's song.💖
Me too!
Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town .
Born in 70, went to high school in the 80s and experienced some of the best music ever - Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, just to name a few, but I still wish I'd gotten to see Led Zeppelin preform!
Perfect tune , puffing my blunt on the motorway on a rainy day ❤
I have the trilogy on my playlist Better Man, Alive & Yellow Ledbetter, I never get tied of hearing when they come around while travelling in the car.
Same I just add old women behind the counter in a little town.

Can't find a Vedder man. LOVE this song. So much history, so many memories. Memories of back when she was so damn strong........
Thirty years ago, Pearl Jam released this classic! It really was a motivational tune.
One of the best ,Rock songs. ever..way to go, Pearl 🎸 jam...enough said...
Love this! That’s why she will be back again ❤
This is a song about a woman that can't quit a sorry a$$ man. Women, you all are worth more than you will ever know.
Winner winner thank you Eddie and the better man Earl
words so true - my all time fave PJ tune
Pearl jam.....the remedy to my teenage angst back in the day
This song can be interpreted as either a survival strategy for a woman who is trapped or the deception of 1-way commitment that is unfair to the man. It can even be both. Such is the complexity of life.
I had a teacher in highschool that said music of that era was made for longevity. The mainstream music of today's youth only lasts a month or two, and it's either forgotten about or considered old.
Right on
It's hard to believe this is 30 years ago!
This song brings me back to time when a relationship was falling apart and we still lived together. Such a powerful song!
What a genius Eddy Vedder is.
I mean, who would of thought of making goat bleeting sounds toward the end of the song. TWICE!!
Imho, one of the keys to life is to learn to not to depend on someone else to make you feel whole.
The minute you understand that?
That is the last moment anyone can hurt you again.
☮
I truly hope she can find a better man.
Certain music brings tears to my eyes. I’m so grateful for discovering this band. This is like discovering. Sublime or Nirvana.
Great song. The harmonies and bass on this one really bring it to life.
Every time I listen I close my eyes and my whole life goes by 😢😭
Hello Amanda, how are you doing today? I'm glad you're a fan, and it's my pleasure meeting you here. Is this your favorite track of the band?
So many people forget to like good music.... they always get lost in it 😊
My dad went to the hospital today. He had a stroke and is recovering this is his favorite song. Every Time I here it I think of him it is almost hard to hear.
And again we are joined together in harmonic musical of special memories of our youth and tunes that will live for eternity...pj's existence is my existence...
Incredible song, incredible band! Thank you Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam! RIP Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley...
My heart bleeds for those souls.
you forgot scott weiland stps
timeless classic thank you pearl jam
I’m not a die hard Pearl Jam fan or anything but this might be the greatest song ever.
Even Flow is my jam, but this is a great track. Eddie is great at grabbing you by the emotions and throwing you around the room.
Better than Jeremy? Hell no!
1:58 is such a dopamine rush
💯💯👍
Woke up this morning singing this. Miss my childhood I guess.❤
There is something so complimenting about the Hammond Organ with Rock Music. It wasn't even invented to fit in with that genre of music. I'm sure this and many other songs sound decent without it, but adding it makes the song sound so much better.
So happy to hear you say that. From my username, you can tell I am a big fan of that instrument. And I agree with you whole heartedly.
Such a beautiful but sad song.
Most are.
Now, every single time i hear thus song it hits so different since i met what thought was a twin flame.
They were ALL placeholders.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Love you ...eddie😊
I remember one time my ex was being his usual asshole self and this song came on after a fight. He said “ is this your song?” And started laughing .
The asshole was physically , mentally, sexually and verbally abusive to me for 3 years . I’m so glad I left him .
sometimes we date some coal. but eventually we reach a diamond. just takes time. don't give up on love. 😊
Love yourself ❤
Damn, I'm glad you left him too. My mom was that way! 15 years of it. I can resonate with you... It leaves deep rutted unseen scars, fo sho! 😢
Intro is so hauntingly beautiful, sounds like it comes from the bottom of a well
Never gets old

When i was 16 was involved with a 22 yr old who ended up being incarcerated for 4.5 years for what he did to me. The worst part was that i was the 4th girl he'd raped and abused. First 3 all reported. He only got 6 months time for each of those 3 lives he wrecked. There were others besides us, found out later. When you grow up being hurt, pain feels like home. It's a long road to mental and emotional healing, but it's possible. Good men exist. Thank you for bringing awareness. Doesn't matter how long it's been, your music reaches deep for me.
Great masterpiece great album better man a instant classic much love ❤ rock on 🤘
While taking a break at the studio I listened to Sheryl Crow's "Strong Enough" and realized the man in this song is the kind of strong enough man she's talking about.
