  • Marshall Studio Vintage (SV20h) vs Marshall Silver Jubilee Mini (2525h) - Battle of the Marshalls!
    In this video I pit two Marshalls against each other. One is the Studio Vintage, and the other is the Mini Silver Jubilee. The SV20 is of course the small version of a Plexi, while the other one isn't. Basically it's a JCM 800 type thing. Both are valve (or tube) heads, and go for roughly the same price, so it made sense to compare them.
    Enjoy, and please leave a comment.

    One of the most interesting things about a Plexi is the ability to jumper the two channels. I always have mine jumpered. If you want all one channel or the other you can adjust the channel vol knobs. Blending the two to taste is what's awesome about a Plexi. Also, with a single coil guitar and only jacking into one input (no jumper cable) you could jack into the bass channel instead. He's jacked into the treble channel. This would be good for a Les Paul or something with a humbucker. This 20w version is highly responsive to how you play and the settings of the dials on your guitar. Endless sonic possibilities!

    Cool but kind of unfair to the Jube, it has a different tone stack than a plexi so setting the same as you would a plexi won't get you the same results.

    The silver jubilee is just unbeatable. It’s got that extra color to the tone that the SV doesn’t, the SV just kinda sounds like a basic rock tone, silver jub transcends that

    I've been watching a few of your videos recently and like them a lot. I was looking at the SV20 for awhile. After watching this video, I was sure I would prefer the SV20 and can confirm the Silver Jubilee is more dark sounding and can be fizzy. It can deliver Slash tones if you are after that but I find the SV20 the best sounding to me of all of the Studio lineup. I pull the trigger and swap my 2525C Mini Jubilee for a SV20C in a heartbeat after your video and I love it.

    I sold the Jubilee to buy the Plexi, and happy I did. I got the Jubilee early, before the others came out. It was OK. The Plexi is spectacular.

    On this particular video the Plexi sounds better to me. But I own a Mini Jubilee. It is a KILLER sounding amp. I play mine with the gain low on 3... no fizziness . I do not engage the diodes . I use an excellent overdrive pedal with the overdrive also set relatively low at around 10:00 . It sounds as good as my 2204 but even better at lower volumes than my 2204. Don’t count the Jubilee out. Marshall got it right with this amp.

    • @livetorock1844

      Yes! I don't understand the point of making a demo with all the knobs cranked -- especially the input gain on the Jubilee. Those controls on the Jubilee are all quite sensitive. A better approach is to take a little time to dial in the settings. Make it sound as good as it can be. And then do a proper demo.

    • @JMPRocker
      @JMPRocker 5 років тому +4

      Power Chord Therapy You are absolutely correct. This amp has the most sensitive EQ of any amp I’ve ever played/owned. Way more sensitive than my 2204 and Friedman. Especially the Bass. On the Jubilee I have it set to about 8.5... I never have the Bass that high. Usually on 4 or 5 at the most on my other amps (I own 6). But on the Jubilee it sounds killer with the Bass up that high. It never gets flubby or muddy. Just a very excellent THUMP. Played through a proper 2x12 or 4x12 it sounds monstrous. In the best way.

    Hi there great video. Do you think you can get the edge of breakup tones at a reasonable volume for home use or do you need an attenuator? I am a classic rock guy so I don’t need all out gain. I have a vintage modern so I was thinking the studio vintage combo as an option.

    I like the tone of the plexi. When you push it there’s a less fizzy gain. More of a head room where the sustain is relying on your playing and head room than fizzy gain. Because your a good player and it’s shows what your fingers are actually doing. I would back if the gain on your pedal on the plexi. And maybe just micro boost 1db or 2 dB for leads. But to each their own. what do you think is better for your style ?

    Those reissues are probably some of the best work Marshall has done in years. They all sound good, matter of preference there, I believe that Jubilee has diodes doing the clipping in there like the original did, so if one is looking for a straight tube path it's the mini-Plexi for the win; my preference for sure. I have the 2525H. I find cranking the input gain above about 7 can make the lower string notes fall apart a bit and flub out. The amp also seems to like having the bass control set higher than Plexis or JCM 800s. Cranking the mids and presence works, but not so much the treble. The amp likes a tube screamer best so far. It tightens it up for the percussive chug thing. Higher notes are a bit thin, but not as thin as many JCM 800s. The 5 watt mode is decent. Do not lose much tone at all. Just headroom.
    I bought it because my Plexi replica is too old school sounding for for some stuff. Rather than having Jose or BE mods done, i decided to leave the Plexi as is, because I did not want to risk losing the sound it does so well. I figure the Silver Jube was just Marshall's take on the Jose mods anyway (diode clipping). Turns out I do not use the diode clipping. I get more than enough dirt from the amp and a TS808 (my Iommi booster goes nice with it too, but that thing goes nice with every amp I try it with). I have a gold DOD 250. Not as nice as the TS808 for tightening things up at least. I read that version of the DOD 250 has less high pass than most, so i might mod the input cap, so it does the YJM thing better.

    • @DeborahHammond
      @DeborahHammond Рік тому

      I also have a 2525H. I've been using it with a TS808, and now I use a Boss overdrive (an old BOSS OS-2 that I put in overdrive mode). At this moment I lean more towards the BOSS, it seems to me that it fattens the sound without losing character.

    is great for cutting through a mix on UA-cam. I usually use a Hall of

    and or a Wampler Tumnus can be added (front of amp). I always like a

    If you turn the gain down on the mini jubilee it becomes less dark and in fact very bright sounding, which personally i don't like. I have one.

    • @olihagen
      @olihagen 3 роки тому

      The trick i've found with the Silver Jubilee is that you dont put the gain past 3 o clock. After 3 o clock it gets a mid hump (to my ears) which sort of muddies up the sound. Also highly recommend using the 2x12 "mini cab" they designed to go with the amp, its killer.

    I liked them both and would have a hard time choosing. Fortunately or unfortunately I can't afford either so the matter's moot for this poor Aussie. I think that the SV would be my choice were I able to buy one. It has more of the "Old Marshall" bite/tone/character or what have you, that I do like and when you're on a good thing stick to it as the old saying goes. Thanks for the comparison of these two little gems from Marshall as we're all downsizing our rigs for stupid people who want to keep their hearing - why I ask? Just look at the great hearing aids that they have now, so don't worry about your hearing and play guitar at 180db all day I say. Maybe that's a bit too loud. Maybe.

    I hope Elmon takes this constructively as I'm sure he has something to offer us, but this isn't it. It isn't much use as a review. Like SO many others: "let me wank my guitar all over you" takes over from the start. We heard them extremely gained out and volume up. But crunch tones? Crunch to driven on the volume control? Nothing.
    There's decent enough video production and scripting values, but it misses the point. The gear under review is the star. Not the reviewer.
    Thanks for letting us hear them at full tilt though, it has answered one of my questions. But only one sadly.
    Absolutely certain Elmo can do way better, he has it in him.

    I have the Jubilee. I like it. It takes a while to experiment with the settings to get the sound you want. I find that the Presence and Treble should be turned down to 2. Bass and Mid at about 6. Input gain I set to 7 and it sounds great on both channels. What I most like is it sounds better to me without a drive pedal. I'm using a Hall of Fame 2 Reverb through the effects loop. All delays and reverb must go through the effects loop.
    It has a lot of tone possibilities. I'm sure I will find many more sounds later.

    Plexi has a more "pure" sound, notes jump out of the amp, let's say! Maybe it's because the Jubilee has diodes in the signal path to get more drive and Plexi has the simplest signal path from input to the speaker. Next: Compare Studio Vintage to Studio Classic (JCM 800 20w)!
