Fun fact for any sea shanty ..when a vocalist shouts "timmy" . Its an english abbreviation of the words "to me" or how we say it "tae me " .. hence why every solo shanty man says it and all the fellow men follow with the chorus !! 😅🤣 tune in fae more more facts
+spidermanxx23 What they're actually saying is "to me" very fast. When sailors would sing long haul shanties such as this one while setting sails, the shantyman would sing the verse alone, and then say "to me" to tell the other sailors on the line to join in for the chorus, where they would then heave in unison on the hard syllables (aWay haul aWay, haul aWay Joe)
Then I met an Irish girl, she damn near drove me crayZZAH! I laugh every time at the exaggeration. I love this version tho, your voices are so good together.
Oh my gosh this is by far the best version I've yet to see & one of the few that is sang the way I always heard it as a child ! This brought tears to my eyes. So many different versions out there, this is a national treasure, to me at least
Man I came here from the minecraft bedwars player walibear who sings this song somewhat in the new purpled video. I cant belive I found this great piece of work through minecraft bedward xD.
Great job, guys. Great rendition. Never mind the (small minority of) critics below. I can't believe anyone would go out of their way to find fault with this. You guys are amazing.
When I was a little boy, so my mother told me, to me Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe That if I did not kiss the girls, my lips would all grow moldy, to me Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe Way, haul away, the good ship now is rolling, to me Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe First I met a yankee girl and she was fat and lazy, to me Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe And then I met an Irish girl, she damn near drove me crazy, to me Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe King Louis was the King of France before the revolution, to me Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe And then he got his head cut off, it spoiled his constitution, to me Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe St. Patrick was a gentleman, he came form decent people, to me Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe He built a church in Dublin town and on it put a steeple, to me Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe Way haul away, we're bound for better weather, to me Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
Wow, what a fantastic rendition of a song very close to my heart, amazing voices guys and so good to hear. If I had any criticism it would be as benedict hampus said - the soft and slightly embarrased "to me" from the man with the hat - this is a sea shanty traditionally sung to aid the hard work of dragging a massive mainsail "to me" hence it's huge importance! Other than that an almost perfect modern day version of a seafaring classic - well done guys :)
xandercorp Hmmm. In most lyrics I have read they write: "tell me". And "to" sounds so very different to what they're singing. Especially if you listen to other versions of this song...
Maybe you're unfamiliar with the accent. It's exactly how they would pronounce to me. Tell me could be valid enough I suppose, but I am doubtful. As for other versions, they all sound like "to me". What versions are you listening to? The main version I go to as a classic is the Clancy Brothers.
xandercorp I'm not unfamiliar with the accent, although I do not hear it daily... In my opinion it's exactly how they pronounce "tell me" but a little faster... I have listened to every version that I could find, which is a bout 30 or so... I have heard the Clancy Brothers version often, and watched live versions as well. I think it's quite hard to tell exactly, but I would still go for "tell me", also because it makes the most sense...
+Philip Shapkin This is a long haul Shanty, much like Cadences in the Military, these types of songs were used when working in groups like to raise sails, haul in anchor lines etc. I never worked on sail ships, but some of those ropes and sails were not light, so a Chanter would sing the verse or few lines, then the crew hauling on the lines would respond and would haul in unison.
Philip Shapkin - We Sailors speak a different language. To "haul" means to pull back with force. To "weigh anchor" means to raise up , bathrooms ="Heads", rooms ="Compartments", walls="Bulkheads" , pointy end in front ="Bow" or "Fore", the other end ="Stern", "Aft", or "Fantail". If something is behind something else its "Abaft" of it, while something in front of something else is "Afore" of it. Clear as mud, right? Steps ="Ladders", narrow safety edging around the ship = "Catwalk" and in case you've ever wondered, you can put a boat on a ship, but you can't put a Ship on a boat. WHEW !!
I'm a salty old Shell back Sailor and THIS VERSION is the best I've ever hear. It should be mandatory for the Cadance Caller to chant this chanty whilst teaching the USN recruits to march.
Yes to Cadence calling. In our platoon in Army OCS we sang "What do you do with a Drunken Sailor" at fast double time march. Is a fun thing to remember.
I was really hoping to see some greatly bearded men with the voices of warriors sing this song of old; I was given vegans in tight pants...and rather cute beards.
Sounded great, good harmony! The standing guy is trying too hard and needs to practice his timing... I don't like to criticise but his singing was the weakest part of the performance. Honestly, the guy with the ponytail should have sung the whole thing. Keep up the good work!
and that Geo-Strata 101, is the most forked tongue compliment I’ve read in a long time. I think they all add texture and it would sound very flat just sung by one fellow. I like this rendition a lot. With no caveats whatsoever. Well done the lads. All ov them. Xx
The miss timing is Rubato, which is extending the length of the bars to add emphasis and in a situation like this, it’s bloody amazing. And with the harmonies do them all justice
Her: He's probably cheating on me.
Me with my boys:

"First I met a yankee girl and she was fat and lazy"
I kinda love that we (Americans) are fat and lazy even in old Irish folk songs.
In the traditional lyrics, it was the Irish girl that was 'fat and lazy'
The Eskies, being proud Irishmen, have decided to change it.
@@eudamushd7530 Ah, but the Redheads are still " Irish Crazy"!
Also been sung as "Once I had a Cockney girl" ...cities/locale were often interchanged
Who the hell is timmy
+spidermanxx23 right?

+Colin Weinmann Alice? Who the fuck is Alice?
It's "tell me"...
This is vastly underrated
I met Timmy once, he was hanging out in an English Pub. Nice fella he was. 🍺
Best version by far. Classic sailor shanty they all look like sea dogs!.
Then I met an Irish girl, she damn near drove me crayZZAH! I laugh every time at the exaggeration. I love this version tho, your voices are so good together.
I do hope Timmy is listening...

Fantastic version of this classic shanty...
Holy Shit ! perfect! amazing! love it!! thank you for doing this!
How evocative this is. I find it very moving. how many of our forefathers must have sang these words ?
4-fathers
Absolutely fantastic, the manliest of manly songs. Sung by extremely manly men.
Imagine walking through a forest and you start to hear this, must have been amazing
You gentlemen are remarkable. Well done!
Holy shit...new favorite version!!!!!!
I`m Hauling it Boss!

Great version of this sea shanty. Nice one!
Gosh Darn it! i love this video, but as a southpark fan, i cannot watch this video with a straight face :D
Fantastic rendition. Thanx lads.
Keep em comin'
Xx
Watch the Clancy Brothers version of this. No comparison.
Brings back memories of the 1970's for me! Love it.
they can haul away all they want, that boat aint going nowhere til they raise the water level
Can't beat this version WELL DONE
You damn well hit it right how you should fellas. Good work.
Definetely, these men are actual gentlemen
it's to me! not Timmy!!
Erm.. It;s actually "tell me"...
He's right. It's "to me" as in "sing it to me".

Wonderful!
Honestly it's Timmy doing most of the hauling in this version
My fave version of this song still .... love the 'woooup!' and various loud voice sounds through the song (harmonies are great for sure too!!)
sorry im a bit confused on the general meaning of the chorus in this song. can someone explain it. is it a song mourning a death ?

I don't know, I think they are trying too hard. This is a working song, a hauling song. Not a ballad.
Chills...
Great harmony.
Sounds great, and a cool location.
**Gilbert Blythe joined the chat**
Nice job fellas!
Livinalie timmy!
That is ace
Why hipsters feels the need to ruin everything?
Best haul away joe ever

So well done.
Underated
I love this!
Name personal (Timmy) or of teammate? It so old song, so a do it understand as "teammate"
Тимофей Колыженков the lyric is "to me"
Fantastic singing and the recording is extra exceptional!
part of this song is in my music book in school :)
This is hands down the best version of this I've ever heard, and I've been listening to it for almost twenty years, singing it for several.
I was really hoping to see some greatly bearded men with the voices of warriors sing this song of old; I was given vegans in tight pants...and rather cute beards.
Lt. Kettch but they're not vegans
The definition of posers. It confounds me, people leaving positive feedback. It's like no one has heard a proper sea shanty.
👍
Wow, way too much inflection. Either way, I appreciate the try and it's important music to keep singing!

Beer in one hand ;) Only in Britain.
Naval Frontline it’s Ireland not Britain
Ah ofc, only the British can hold a beer in one hand, the Irish would be lucky to even have a beer ;)
timmehhhh
Timmy!!!
I do know that but its a south park reference thank you much
Needs more shaky cam and off angle uncentered camera work to be even more irritating.
Not often is the original bested like this. The Clancies would be very happy. X
23Seana it's too bad the Clancy's didn't make the original......
Oh sorry Ted Bear, who did the original?
X
