One of the few I can sing the chorus to confidently, and as such I was singing along loudly. Then the wife yells from up stairs, "just get on a ship already" keep em coming sir, I've got a play list going, great music to do work to
Lots more to come. I'm glad to hear that you're singing along. Let me know if you ever get that ship. Regards to you and your wife.
I sang this shanty at a whaling museum with my nephews/ godsons. We were demonstrating how the shanties helped with the work that went into hauling up large blankets of whale blubber.
I love all of your songs, but this one is definitely in my top 3! Your voice is perfect. Thank you very much for giving us the pleasure of hearing it. And the pleasure of your laugh and smile. Thank you.
You're welcome, J. Thanks for your kind words.
This is the only version of this song I've heard with the "I've fought I've cursed I've fainted, been restored with rum and brandy" bit - and damned if that isn't, as the kids say, a whole mood.
I think I might have made up that verse, or at least modified it drastically.
@@SeanDagher That's the Folk process at work!
Keep up the great work Sean I love the shanties
It has been a couple of years since I began my shanty obsession, and I have to say that this is the one that gets stuck in my head the most.
beautiful 😘😘😘 love your voice 😎😎😎😎😎
These videos were a good idea, and convenient for after I've seen the full history video but just want to listen to you sing it a few more times on loop or something - thanks for doing this!
Another one of my favorites! 🎼🎶🎵🎤👏👍
OMG I JUST REALIZED THIS. When you sing "I think she was called Daisy" you try to act the part! I love it so much!
Yeah, it was a spur of the moment decision to act it out a bit, I think. This was a while ago now. I actually made up that line because the other ones were (even more) disrespectful.
Your commentary adds to my enjoyment of an already-engaging shanty -- thank you!
Thanks Sonya, I'm glad you enjoy it.
Love your shanty's
Excellent.
Oh hell yeah
Your voice is amazing!
Hi Sean! Your voice literally made me and my friends to be keen on Sea Shanties, when we played Assassin's Creed Black Flag almost 8 years ago. When we found out that you have a channel...Well, guess what - we got drunk with almost no memories. Thank You for showing us "the Shanties' Way". Cheers From Bulgaria!
Hi Theo. Nice to hear from Bulgaria. I'm glad you like the music in AC and on this channel.
‘Pratie’ comes from the Irish word for potato; prata or prataí, which I think is a cool fact!
I love the chapters
Thanks!
Sean, the name of this shanty made me remember one song that is not talked about very often. If I am not mistaken, you were also hired to sing one shanty in Assassin's Creed 3, I think it's Haul On The Bowline. Should I look forward to hearing this again on your channel? I really liked it in the game, it was so pure. By the way, great job and beautiful experience again with Haul Away Joe. Love it.
Edit: I just found it on your channel, sorry for my mistake. It's great as expected.
The version on SOTW is quite different from the AC3 one (and the La Nef one we did.) I'll eventually do the other version here, too.
@@SeanDagher yes, I registered you sang the refrain a bit higher than in AC3. I personally liked the AC3 version more. But then again, it's your sharp voice, fitted so nicely for these songs, that makes it so authentic for me. Whatever the version is, it's still great and it's your voice that brings back the memories when I was but a child playing it for the first time. Now I'm a grown adult man with a job, trying to get a degree and it's really nice to come back to those times when I could just float with my ship and listen to all the beautiful shanties in both AC3 or AC4, especially the ones you sang, I personally preferred your voice in all of those shanties, sharper and quicker to catch with my ear. Just great memories you helped to create with all those songs during those times when my only concern was to get back home as quickly as possible to play AC4 and just enjoy it all.
Let's create a trend on the social apps! "Try to not sing this together" HAHAH
Good one!

Hi Joe. We sang a few shanties on AC3, and yes, sang lead on Haul on the Bowline. I did a version of it here but a very different one. The version I put on the La Nef album (Sea Songs & Shanties) is much closer to the AC3 version.
Nice version Sean, only ever heard this by the Clancy brothers and Tommy Makem before.
Where's the Bonny Shoals of Herring?
Shoals of Herring is a great song. It was written by Ewen McColl s it's won't be in the series, but I hope to do it in another series one day.
@@SeanDagher its one of my favourites, I look forward to hearing your rendition.
Is there any chance you'll produce an album of just these shanties as presented on here?
The albums are available on Bandcamp: seandagher.bandcamp.com
First!
Not only was Patrick not Irish, his color was blue, not green. His name also comes from Latin, not Irish.
True. And St George wasn't English and St Andrew wasn't Scottish. I might still celebrate St. Patrick's day with a black beer, to avoid the colour issue.
I dislike the less rythmic and consistant verses in this version. The singing is beautiful, but I prefer the versions that keep a consistant pace with the singing
Love it ❤ 2024
