During the American Revolution, the British had set up a Naval blockade. They hired Privateers from the Canadian Maratimes to catch any American ships that evaded the blockade. They British stated that these privateers could keep all of the loot from captured American ships. Many Canadian privateers participated in the conflict, and some were quite successful becaming very wealthy. However most privateers looking for easy money had ships that were more suited for fishing, and less than ideal for naval warfare.
Boy, time flies! In 2012, while working a thankless graveyard shift job as Maintenance at a Wal-mart, I heard one of those great eclectric folk shows on an FM station in my Sony Walkman as i scrubbed , mopped and cleaned the lavatories. And they played this some 10 minute long, live version of this man I never heard of...a rare radio version of Barrett's Priveteers. Now, as an old American folkie and guitar picker some 4 plus decades, i was fascinated by his passion, the resounding chorus of the GD's, and the total conviction and belief of what he was singing with his mates. i never forgot it...and BINGO, this 2nd day of 2018, without knowing the title...just the chorus of GD ! I found it here! Thanks for posting this...and kitchens are absolutely the BEST place in the house to play music, jam, and drink with your pals! Hundred of hours have i played in kitchens! Stan was gone far too early in life.
p.s. Why does Stan come to mind out? i broke my hip early in December, and had hip replacement surgery; was in the hospital 12 days. In my room they had the great premium cable channel, The Smithsonian Channel...focusing that month of air disasters, and the NTSB investigations into what caused the crash. And by chance, i saw the hour documentary early in the wee hours when I sleep any more...about the Air Canada Flight, where Stan and others perished because of the lavatory fire on the runway, in Cincinnati. Wow...I hand't heard the name Stan Rogers since that night in 2013 while at work! I knew I would look him up and enjoy his music, when I got home. What an air tragedy...not even while in air! Rogers was taken from others far too soon..along with his fellow passengers who perished.
Listening to this song puts hair on your chest. The second stage is your beard grows out magnificently. Next you start wearing manly plaid shirt, confidently open to the chest. Finally, you wear a handkerchief tied around you neck like a rustic Canadian sailor from the 1700's.
That establishing shot of outside the cottage zooming in is so powerful. Let's us feel like a party overheard as we pass by and we get an invaluable glimpse into a song of another time.
I thought I recognized the other faces! Three of the other men are Irish/Newfoundland artists Fergus O’Byrne, Dermot O’Reilly, and Denis Ryan. This is about as many Canadian music icons you’d be able to fit into one video. This is sex to my ears.
What I love about this video is the passion. Sitting round a table, Stan leading the way as only Stan could! Proud to say my Grandfather was from Halifax, Nova Scotia!
This will never get old! i love everything from the passion, the scenery, and especially his facial expressions when he says," yanks drove us in" and, " I just made Halifax yesterday." The world needs more souls like his. I wish that he was still around, sharing his passion with the world
Great words. We're fortunate to have been able to tell his story. It's an amazing feeling to know that people enjoy how we've captured these men in an authentic way.
You can tell Stan is having fun singing this song by that huge smile on his face. You can hear it in his voice, too. I just wish the entire song was here.
I've heard that Stan dashed off this masterful piece in an afternoon at the Mariposa Folk Festival in order to enter a "sea shanty" event. He didn't have one ready, so he wrote this! Amazing talent.
My little ship model company Tlar models makes a 1/700 scale Antelope sloop model kit. The Canadian Maritime History set includes the Nancy schooner too. God love you Stan! You inspired so many others!!
GODDAMN THEM ALL!!! I WAS TOLD WE'D CRUISE THE SEAS FOR AMERICAN GOLD... FIRE NO GUNS, SHED NO TEARS!! NOW I AM A BROKEN MAN IN THE HALIFAX PIER THE LAST OF BARRET'S PRIVATEERS.... I drive to work singing to this Awesome song, there is some fantastic folk music out there! what a legacy. thanks Stan!
I once "served" during a school thing on a huge sailship for a week and on a seperate trip I went to dublin and visited many of the pubs there, the live singing I heard and participated in during those two trips I miss dearly and I cannot find clip of the identical songs on youtube. Sea shanties are lovely
I'm 14 years old, this is long before my time but somehow it still resonates with me so deeply? The sense of happiness and togetherness that this video radiates is something I envy in such a media oriented and closed off time. I fell in love with this music quite by accident, and I while I'm a teenager and interests change, I can tell my love for this will last a lifetime. I think I was a singer like Stan Rodgers in a past life, or even a privateer long ago like in the song. I don't know.
Listening to this at the end of 2024. It makes me nostalgic for the Canada I was proud of as a younger man, thank you for these songs Stan and hopeful for a brighter future for our country.
George Pavlov Stan's funeral service held at St. Luke's Hamilton Ont. June 1983 one block from my house. My dear friend Fr. Blackwood officiating .R.I.P. on the shores so far away
Stan Rogers has been a great inspiration for my songs. This is a great song! Can you imagine how much awesome music he would have given to us if he was still alive? Stan was just getting started.
Wicked stuff. My uncle told me of this song just a month or so ago, and I've already put it to memory. Great song to sing before a shot in toast to Stan Rogers, Elcid Barrett, and the Canadian Navy. Cheers!
0:43 cracks me up! Love this song, you're still missed Stan. RIP -Born and raised in NS, listened to Fogarty's Cove LP back when it was new and he was still teaching the world aboot the Maritimes.
Got introduced to this, thanks to the Clocks And Colors ad. This is an amazing song. Coming from the great grandson of a US Navy fire c9ntrol chief of WWII and Korea.
This is a GOD DAMN real account of a Canadian seafarer's story (my opinion), I wish there were more like Stan who could help us remember the beauty of such shared experiences of early Canadians ...
RIP Stan Rogers (1949-1983) A victim of smoke inhalation onboard Air Canada Flight 797 after it safely landed at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, Boone County, Kentucky due to an in-flight fire.
A great look at the boys. Nobilis, I knew about the film -- and though Stan is greatly missed, as long as we have his music, he will live in our songs and in our hearts.
I was lucky enough to have seen Stan Rogers several times at McCabe's in Santa Monica, CA. I saw him just about 3 days before the fatal plane crash that took him from us.
Assassins Creed: Black Flag shanty hunting brought me to this gentleman's song, and it's already added to my list of maritime shanties to belt out with no hesitation. Though I would love for a humble scene of brotherhood like this.
I once had a co worker (Brazilian imigrant) tell me as a canadian we didn't have any culture lmao. so I said youtube ANY music from the east coast.... ha ha and I'm from ontario...... what a bitch
This was filmed at 6989 hwy 16, Half Way Cove a property my father, Stan's uncle, bought in1968 for visits in the summer. After Stan died we never went back and the little house fell into disrepair. There is a cabin now on the foundation of the old house. It is a special place.
This was filmed in my Great Uncles house in Canso, Nova Scotia
Ha! Really? That's fantastic. Does it still exist? Is it still in your family?
Neat!!!!
shadycat77 I believe it is still in my family, but no one has been in there for like 30 years.
God bless Canada & Nova Scotia.
oh, so cool !
this song made me grow a beard and steel balls.
Dupz meister happy we could be a positive part of your personal development!
This song made my balls grow a beard.
I listened to it again and it made my beard grow some balls
make it stop
This song made my beard grow a steel beard and my balls are drunk and getting into a fight with a Yankee.
That, or the acid just kicked in.
I listened to this song and I'm now Chuck Norris

I grew up in nova Scotia and I always just called this a "party". I found out later it's supposedly called a "kitchen party".
this man was taken from us far to soon

Tip of the hat to the Royal Canadian Navy, who shared this on their Facebook page.
+lordshipmayhem We saw it there too - thanks for the heads up :)
lordshipmayhem really? Fuck yeah!
Doesn’t that strike anyone as slightly ironic given the content of the song?
G G yes
That establishing shot of outside the cottage zooming in is so powerful. Let's us feel like a party overheard as we pass by and we get an invaluable glimpse into a song of another time.
I love this. Its the best version possible, but almost impossible to get.
My personal favourite as well. You can get it on vimeo or dvd. vimeo.com/ondemand/stanrogers

I found out about this great singer while watching a Mayday episode about the flight on which he died...forever a fan now. RIP Stan.
Stan Roger's' voice goes straight to the heart and stays there.

Fantastic performance. They all look like they're half-cut and having a great time.

Shoutout to this room for amazing acoustics.

I was just cruisin through Itunes and I happened to come across this song and I am so glad I did.
This American has listened to this at least 13 times in the past 24 hours. Absolutely beautiful

It's amazing, we agree!
i love the kitchen
This song gives me so much life. Thank ya, Stan 🫡
This is far and away the best recording of this song ever. It's a crime against humanity that the full song wasn't preserved.
Just a stunning writer and performer.
Listening to this at the end of 2024. It makes me nostalgic for the Canada I was proud of as a younger man, thank you for these songs Stan and hopeful for a brighter future for our country.
Oh god, I just googled Stan Rogers, as I confess I hadn't heard of him before now. What a bloody loss to the world when he died, so young.
Doubting Thomas , has the legend made a fan out of you, too?
Whole lot of legend at that table. Stan Rogers, Jim Payne, Fergus O'Byrne
I just got to sing this song at an old wooden table in a cottage on the water in Harbourville Nova Scotia, really cool feeling!!!!!
Phil Mart awesome. Good to know it's not just my family that keeps up the traditions
Finally... something worthwhile watching on youtube
You're the best!
I love being from Shrebrooke. ;)
The full song, from this performance, would be better than world peace.
Love this. Stan was a rare talent.

I wish I was in Halifax now!
This performance really does paint a colourful picture of the Maritimes!
Must be on my 30th watch. Just need to be in the room with these guys!
Stan's brother, Garnet rogers, with the long hair. An incredible talent (singer and songwriter) in his own right.
Richard Jacobs True!
Richard Jacobs Thanks! I did not realize they were brothers!
+Richard Jacobs I thought that must be Garnet- there's a definite family resemblance.
By God does this song take me back to some good times!
So classic!
RIP Stan… a true musician that we lost too soon.
Hometown hero! 🖤
This is a typical of the area Stan loved and I live Guysbrough county Nova Scotia, and I love it.
I love how he's singing this with the fellas from Ryan's Fancy ❤
This is such a beautiful thing. So glad it was captured this effectively.
Thanks so much. It was one of our most memorable shoots!
Got introduced to this, thanks to the Clocks And Colors ad. This is an amazing song. Coming from the great grandson of a US Navy fire c9ntrol chief of WWII and Korea.
I don't understand the dislikes. This is even better than the fantastic live version on Between the Breaks.
Hell yeah
This is a GOD DAMN real account of a Canadian seafarer's story (my opinion), I wish there were more like Stan who could help us remember the beauty of such shared experiences of early Canadians ...
My mom is from Isaacs Harbour, pretty close to Sherbrooke. I currently have family in Sherbrooke, beautiful place especially the village
Sounds like a great place to visit.
I've been looking for this scene for months!! Thank you for posting it, so much.
It was delightful to come across this one! In the culture we live in today, this form of gathering is sorely missed.
powerful,,,We lost Stan in ';81 or 82...I hope to speak to him again some day
.
The only reason for anyone to dislike this must be that it isn't the whole song. This is incredible
Stan's the Man!
This is AMAZING!!! 🎵
This hypes me up like nothing else
Great song!
For those of you who really love this, you should check out the cover that his son, Nathan, has done. He sounds just like Stan.
A great example of positive masculinity.
RIP

Pure Gold.
What a kitchen party that was!
A great look at the boys. Nobilis, I knew about the film -- and though Stan is greatly missed, as long as we have his music, he will live in our songs and in our hearts.
the best .
I was lucky enough to have seen Stan Rogers several times at McCabe's in Santa Monica, CA. I saw him just about 3 days before the fatal plane crash that took him from us.
That's amazing. Did you get a chance to take pictures of the show?
Back in 1983 we did not have cell phones,, so no. I did talk to him after the show though.
:-) but we still had cameras in '83. Great that you got a chance to talk to him.
aha Ryans Fancy and Stan Rogers, gotta love it!
ryan's fancy and stan rogers. all legends
0:43 dude with the kerchief has a STRONG resemblance to Dennis Quaid
Assassins Creed: Black Flag shanty hunting brought me to this gentleman's song, and it's already added to my list of maritime shanties to belt out with no hesitation. Though I would love for a humble scene of brotherhood like this.
Wow it's amazing how you ended up on the video. Thanks for watching!
Daisuke Sanada Celtic Colours in Cape Breton 👍
Me too!
Well, technically, it's not a shanty. It's a ballad. Also, this video leaves off the first three or four verses.
Check out the Real McKenzies version

The arrogance of these immigrants eh? Should have told him to shove off back to hell on earth.
Don't generalize over one anecdote you nativist POS.
Celtic singing at its finest,
what a partay... this is what i'd want for my Friday evenings.
long live Stan.
What a musician, What a man!
To be at that kitchen party and to tip back the same liquor as the great Stan Rogers, that's heaven on earth my friends.
I just realized something....Stan Rodgers is the SHIT! :D
This was filmed at 6989 hwy 16, Half Way Cove a property my father, Stan's uncle, bought in1968 for visits in the summer. After Stan died we never went back and the little house fell into disrepair. There is a cabin now on the foundation of the old house. It is a special place.
