@Sneed There are a lot of Catholic churches that aren't getting all modernized and poppy, just gotta find the right one. There are still some traditional ones. There's also plenty of other denominations with similar reverence and traditionalism like the Anglicans (Episcopals in the US, who also happen to be very socially liberal, pro-LGBT etc.).
As an Austrian Catholic, this is the first church song I remember singing. It was first printed in its original German version in Vienna - incidentally, this was in 1776, when the United States came into being. We sing it over here at the end of every larger celebration. And indeed, we sang it in the early morning hours while crossing the border into Ukraine from Poland with a delegation of Austrian bishops visiting the war-torn country. Good Lord, the emotions. Thank you for this version.
The organ kicking in heavy at 4:57 over the altar boys and Pruitt walking down the aisle is one of the most visceral images I can remember seeing in any TV show I've watched
I haven't seen MIDNIGHT MASS because I don't subscribe to Netflix. Being a Pensioner, I don't have the income to subscribe to .... everything. Besides with so many choices and channels - I don't think there are enough hours in the day to watch any more than 10% of everything that there is! I would hate to have to subscribe to; say Netflix, just to watch one drama a week, in this case MIDNIGHT MASS. I read somewhere that the production team will not sanction the series on DVD. Why? Though, I live in hope that they will change that.
I love all the big words that hymns have in them. I think one reason I have such an extensive vocabulary today is because of church. Sunday School (reading Bible passages) and hymn singing.
I agree. I'm no atheist, but I rarely attend church. You, I, or anyone can attend mass any time. We don't need to be overzealous fanatics to attend, like some people seem to think!
There's something special when all the villagers start chanting this and walk togheter to the midnight mass... Even if you know it's not gonna end well, what a scene !
That’s part of the brilliant tension building, I think. I felt so much anxiety during this scene. You know it’s special that they’re all singing this song together as a Christian community, but what they’re walking into is nothing but danger, not the typical midnight mass for Easter.
This is amazing choral arranging and singing. And it's an amazing hymn. This is definitely the best version ever recorded and somehow it's from a Netflix show.
The plain singing style that the choir utilized for the soundtrack was a perfect representation of a devout rural Catholic congregation. Not plain song but also not overly polished, all of the hymns follow the same format, from two part harmony to fully realized four part choral settings. It’s brilliant writing and mirrors the action on the screen perfectly.
Absolutely. Part of the charm is in the unpolished, American-accented singing. Too refined and we'd be taken out of our suspension of disbelief somewhat!
Holy God, we praise thy name; Lord of all, we bow before thee; all on earth thy scepter claim; all in heaven above adore thee. Infinite thy vast domain; everlasting is thy reign. Hark the loud celestial hymn angel choirs above are raising; cherubim and seraphim, in unceasing chorus praising, fill the heavens with sweet accord: Holy, holy, holy Lord. Lo! the apostolic train joins thy sacred name to hallow; prophets swell the loud refrain, and the white-robed martyrs follow. And from morn to set of sun, through the church the song goes on. Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy Spirit: three we name thee, though in essence only one; undivided God we claim thee, and adoring bend the knee while we own the mystery. Thou art King of glory, Christ: Son of God, yet born of Mary; For us sinners sacrificed, And to death a tributary: First to break the bars of death, Thou has opened Heaven to faith. Therefore do we pray Thee, Lord: Help Thy servants whom, redeeming By Thy precious blood out-poured, Thou hast saved from Satan’s scheming. Give to them eternal rest In the glory of the blest. Spare Thy people, Lord, we pray, By a thousand snares surrounded: Keep us without sin today, Never let us be confounded. Lo, I put my trust in Thee; Never, Lord, abandon me.
This is a reflection of the entire series. There are 7 verses (episodes). Each verse builds as more and more people come to the church. The first 2 verses have a refrain(as if to stress a message). The 3rd through the 5th verse have no refrain because a miracle has already taken place in episode 2 (no need to stress the message anymore, the people are coming). The 6th verse brings the organ in because we're almost home. It also has a refrain to once again reinforce the message to keep people on track (and not be afraid). The 7th and final verse/episode is the most full because now the whole town is involved (whether they want to be or not). It also has a refrain/coda because in the end they all put their trust in "the lord" and pray they won't be abandoned in this most important time.

I was really taken back when I heard this arrangement in that episode; Just a profoundly beautiful choral arrangement that builds so organically. I'm mesmerized by the inner voice movements the most as they really draw out that emotion in those chords (like the F/A especially or whenever the top voice/melody is hanging on a note and the inner voice moves down, etc.) The arrangement is just so well written and the vocalists did a terrific job with this, especially in getting a more contemporary/bright sound instead of a warmer classical sound with soft r's and the rest (not a vocalist so don't really know how to explain haha). As the song builds into the second half, the organ fade in felt so natural and then became incredibly captivating in supporting the vocalists. it also sounds like you took some of the vocal tracks, duplicated them, and nudged them over to get that kind of slightly delayed/live room kind of sound? Just great work! Really can't say enough good things about this arrangement!
This is the most unbelievably beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. It makes my soul feel like it’s swelling to the bursting point. The image of the townsfolk’s procession through the streets singing this hymn was just so compelling in a way that I can’t explain. Faith can be such a heart wrenching thing. I was reading about the origin of this particular hymn and was not surprised to find it’s German, and during world war II there was an additional verse added praising adolf hitler. Which to me is just another illustration of mass subscription to horror handed down from an institution that people trust. Societies are truly bizarre when you really consider them. The show is a work of art, one which evoked many long forgotten feeling and occurrences in my own life. It was a cathartic watch.
I would like to see the documentation of the World War II verse you mentioned praising Hitler. I never heard of that. Maybe someone in the Nazi government tried to force it on congregations? Whatever, I would like to know where you got that from.

We just sang this beautiful hymn at Mass today -- I sing in the choir at the traditional Latin Mass, and it was the closing hymn. I was wondering what recordings of it were out there and I found this. Though I never heard of this series I am so happy people are getting to know "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name" -- it goes back at least to the 1700s when it appeared in a German Catholic hymn book. A great, great song -- it rates up there with "Hail, Holy Queen Enthroned Above" as the kind of anthem you can really raise the roof with, which we did this morning. So happy everyone is listening to this. May the Divine Assistance remain always with us and may God bless us all!
If you are a very devout Catholic, then you might not want to watch the show. It is about an isolated community that takes their religion so seriously that fanaticism takes over with dire consequences. I'm an ex-Catholic, so I wasn't bothered by it.
@@VineVitumEt5t's not about anti-religion though. The show shows strength in believing, what it's actually against is blind fanatism and twisting your beliefs to fit whatever benefits you and makes you feel better. It's an actual nuanced and respectful revision on religion and beliefs. There are a lot of moments where the character's beliefs are an actual strength that can do good, like when the girl forgives the guy who paralyzes her or the ending itself where it's shown how accepting something inevitable with grace is a virtue and that virtue and strength can be given by god. "God give us the serenity to accept the thing we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can and the wisdom to know the difference" is a prominent quote that the show uses.
@@oscarchavezavellan2738 **SPOILERS** Also the show quite effectively warns against false teachings. In Christianity that the priest and his "angel" could grant eternal life. There is already a "new and everlasting covenant" that grants eternal life, that through Christ in his eternal kingdom. The mistake of the priest, and the parishioners to an extent, was that they valued "my will be done" over God's will and were led astray. It went along quite well with descriptions of the anti-christ. Per the Catechism (CCC 675), "Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers. The persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth will unveil the “mystery of iniquity” in the form of a religious deception offering men an apparent solution to their problems at the price of apostasy from the truth. The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist, a pseudo-messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh."
I loved that scene. It feels so much more grim as well on a second viewing, knowing what is to come... I am not religious in the slightest, but I honestly get why people love to sing these sings together, as praise to whom they believe in. Beautiful, beyond words.
@@scholaroftheworldalternatehist Uhm, no. Falsehoods galore with you. I have had scares and had plenty loved ones go through old age without growing religious. Saying we are all inherently religious is moronic, at best.
A far cry from the worship songs we hear on the radio, written by and for trained vocal soloists, and yet they get imported into the church for a clueless congregation to moan along to. Keep it simple and a beautiful.

"Keep us without sin today, Never let us be confounded. Lo, I put my trust in Thee; Never, Lord, abandon me." These last 4 lines are basically foreshadow of what's to come. They put their trust in the faith presented before them, and are abandoned to unimaginable evil for the remainder of that night.

It is unusual that I find an English version of this hymn with all its seven verses. ❤ This song is also a translation of the original German hymn, "Großer Gott, wir loben dich," which in turn is a paraphrase of the Latin hymn, "Te Deum".
1 Holy God, we praise thy name. God of all, we bow before thee. All on earth your scepter claim; all in heav’n above adore thee. Infinite thy vast domain, everlasting is thy reign. 2 Hark, the loud celestial hymn, angel choirs above are raising. Brings me WAY back to when I was a child/teen. My family and I attended massevery week and ccd for many years and used to carol this beautiful piece in and out of church.
Okay. So I've lost count over how many times I've rewatched this show. and this is all my thoughts: Just the whole set of moments with this hymn. It has the typical beauty and ambiance of an Easter service considering the resurrection being a big deal in Christian belief, very clearly. But, with this show perfectly capturing elements of religious trauma and blind faith, and you know exactly what's going to happen next. Then the camera pans to Fr Paul walking up front and the facial expressions with his hands in prayer gave me so much curiosity over what was on his mind at the time before confessing to the congregation. Oof! Just beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Way to go Flanagan and Newton Bros. over this shit!
From this song I’m feel bless and peace..hopefully this song will always been use for Holy Mass even it its a classical song but from this song I can tell this is the old tradition Roman Catholic teaching…may God Bless Us always with peace and joyfull..amen..🙏🙏🙏
It's a bit too complex to write down in chord form what makes it sound so distinctive, but it revolves around F major, Csus4, Bb major, D minor, and various inversions of those chords. Through the hymn the lowest voice line often starts with a descending scale from the root note of the chord.
This is such a glorious and beyond beautiful version of Holy God We Praise Thy Name. Midnight Mass was horrid and a disgusting show. Pitiful how Hollywood has marred the name of such a beautiful grace and tradition of the Church. Sticks and stones right?
Outstanding moment in the show. Best song out of all the great songs
I loved that scene. It feels so much more grim as well on a second viewing, knowing what is to come...
I am not religious in the slightest, but I honestly get why people love to sing these sings together, as praise to whom they believe in. Beautiful, beyond words.
All people are religious, takes a scare or old age to make them realize
@@scholaroftheworldalternatehist Uhm, no. Falsehoods galore with you. I have had scares and had plenty loved ones go through old age without growing religious.
You either are indoctrinated/find faith yourself, or you look at it all and realize you just don't believe in it. And then there are agnostics, obviously.
Saying we are all inherently religious is moronic, at best.
@@scholaroftheworldalternatehist Tribulation is revelation
If there was ever a church that sang like this, I'd be there every weekend just for that
The reason this is such a great hymn is that it has such a narrow vocal range - anybody can sing it and sing it well.
A far cry from the worship songs we hear on the radio, written by and for trained vocal soloists, and yet they get imported into the church for a clueless congregation to moan along to. Keep it simple and a beautiful.
Other sings that are simple to sing are "Rock of Ages," and "Shall We Gather at the River."
@Newton Brothers If you will arrange more church songs like this, it would increase the love and power in the hearts of humanity 👌
Best greetings :)
Never Lord abandon me 🙏
Flanagan delivered once again.
If someone yold me there will be a Miracle in the church tonight I will run
I love how Midnight Mass was slow burning like Berserk golden age arc
I love this Show and this Song so much.
Its a Song, that i just can't Listen to once and move on.
I always have to hear it multiple times.
Fantastic
This is my jam
May I not believe in Christ anymore I declare his love is beyond the church and he was radical who fought for justice and redemption of all people something I aspire to do everyday

AMEN bro!!!
I'm not even christian, but I really find a lot of Hymns very beautiful to listen to. This'll sound weird but I found myself slowly singing to this while watching it. In context of the show, it's deeply unsettling. But out of context, this is some beautiful stuff.
Essa é a melhor música da Série...
No ponto alto da série culminando para o final
As a catholic church choir member, I like this rendition. 9.8/10
This song is very beautiful! It is sung theology. Glory to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit!
"Keep us without sin today,
Never let us be confounded.
Lo, I put my trust in Thee;
Never, Lord, abandon me."
These last 4 lines are basically foreshadow of what's to come. They put their trust in the faith presented before them, and are abandoned to unimaginable evil for the remainder of that night.
And choose to do the right thing despite suffering so much. They passed the test and are not found wanting. They earned their rest.
@@velstadtvonausterlitz2338 What?
@@elicrowleyycontreras1135 God gave them a fitting challenge to test their faith. They succeeded the test and died with a clean conscience. Dying with a clean conscience is a sure sign of you going into heaven.
It is unusual that I find an English version of this hymn with all its seven verses. ❤
This song is also a translation of the original German hymn, "Großer Gott, wir loben dich," which in turn is a paraphrase of the Latin hymn, "Te Deum".
1 Holy God, we praise thy name.
God of all, we bow before thee.
All on earth your scepter claim;
all in heav’n above adore thee.
Infinite thy vast domain,
everlasting is thy reign.
2 Hark, the loud celestial hymn,
angel choirs above are raising.
Cherubim and seraphim,
in unceasing chorus praising,
fill the heav’ns with sweet accord:
Holy, holy, holy Lord.
3 Lo! the apostolic train
join thy sacred name to hallow.
Prophets swell the glad refrain,
and the blessed martyrs follow,
and, from morn till set of sun,
through the church the song goes on.
4 Holy Author, Holy Word,
Holy Spirit, three we name thee;
still, one holy voice is heard:
undivided God, we claim thee,
and adoring bend the knee,
while we own the mystery.
Organ comes in at 4:00.
Mike Flanagan entregou à humanidade uma das melhores cenas a que se pode assistir. Todos caminhando em direção à igreja e cantando esse hino, enquanto o coro vai se tornando mais numeroso...
Sublime 😌👌
Brings me WAY back to when I was a child/teen. My family and I attended massevery week and ccd for many years and used to carol this beautiful piece in and out of church.
I have always been an atheist but after this I’m struggling
Yes, perhaps consider going to a Lutheran church closest to your home some time
Go straight to the original Church

Makes me cry.
How has been 2 years
Chills every time. Was a great scene.
this song really encouraged me when verything seemed to e falling apart in the seminary
Semplicemente fantastici meraviglia pura esecuzione straordinaria.
Born to a hymn singing church this particular hymn stayed with me yet I do not know it
Okay. So I've lost count over how many times I've rewatched this show. and this is all my thoughts:
Just the whole set of moments with this hymn.
Amen🙏
So powerful and beautifully choreographed in the series
JFK's favorite hymn.
so beautiful
my favorite series made me cry and rejoice
Why is this song not on the soundtrack on Spotify? It makes me so sad, this is the best song and performance from the whole show
it is on Spotify!
Who through him have faith in God who took him up again from the dead into glory; so that your faith and hope might be in God.
So beauteful. ❤️
absolutely beautiful!! I love the Christian faith ✝
Let’s just say I’m wrong, and God doesn’t exist. Nothing happens after death. But what if I’m right, and God does exist??
Ok pascal
Just do good and be kind either way.
He has nothing to do with this hymn but Billings would be proud :)
spirit
Such a calming beautiful atmosphere, too bad it jerks into one of the most disturbing scenes in television. But still, good church music
I’m drunk and smoking a cig to this
Even better
does anyone have the chords for this?
this may help :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_God,_We_Praise_Thy_Name
It's a bit too complex to write down in chord form what makes it sound so distinctive, but it revolves around F major, Csus4, Bb major, D minor, and various inversions of those chords.
Through the hymn the lowest voice line often starts with a descending scale from the root note of the chord.
All these people wanted was to celebrate Easter….if they only knew
Who is the choir?? Am I being naive by thinking they're real?
The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square.
at the risk of sounding cheesy, they do sing like angels
This is such a glorious and beyond beautiful version of Holy God We Praise Thy Name. Midnight Mass was horrid and a disgusting show. Pitiful how Hollywood has marred the name of such a beautiful grace and tradition of the Church. Sticks and stones right? God is truly mysterious and a brilliant prodigy, using this to get this spectacular epic angelic music and his word out to all of us!!!
Me when I lack nuance and basic media literacy:
love the chrizzos commenting like this is actual gospel music and not the soundtrack to one of the most harrowing scenes on netflix
it does slap tho so i cant blame em
It's a pretty well known and traditional hymn. Being used in a horror soundtrack doesnt change that.
The original hymn is like...a couple hundred years old dog, it's actual gospel music.
When i hear this soundtrack, this remember me heavy metal is not so bad... Catholic can be worst!!
