Saint Paul in his vission couldn't describe Heaven, but only said the eyes have not seen , the ears have not heard nor has it entered the heart of man what God has prepared for those who love him. 1000 years of Catholic music was tossed out by the ecumenical council of Pope John the 23rd. I used to sing in a boys choir back in the old Latin days and we'd sing anything from Gregorian Chant to this exceptionally beautiful German hymn. Much of the best music was from Germany and Austria. There are a whole other group of exceptional hymns that are to the Blessed Virgin.
After my graduation from high school I thought I may have a calling to the priesthood so I spent the summer at a european seminary where I discovered God had other plans for me. ; I was accepted into West Point where graduated in the top one percent of my class. I am now a pediatric surgeon. This song was played at both my high school and West Point graduation and is forverer an inspiration in my life.
Since hearing/seeing this recording for the first time, I have replayed it each morning to start my day. A glorious sound from these singers leads ro my replaying several times throughout the day. Long may it be available.
And still it starts each day for me. I find the enthusiasm, shown on the faces of the singers, adds to the appeal of this hymn. It is also gratifying to hear a strong men''s offering.

I know it from Catholic grade school. I remember when we got to the lyric "Infinite Thy vast domain" the organ would play louder and we would sing much louder. It was always our recessional hymn.
I sang this song many times in my childhood and younger days. The sound of it just reminds me of a time in my life filled with beautiful memories. Church. School. Good family. Good neighbors. Civility. It makes me want to go back to church but it will never be with the innocence I once experienced.

"Frenchy" LaMarre, my dad, who crossed France with the U.S. Army's 5th Armored Division under Gen. Patton, is still the finest man I have ever known. I have missed him every day since he died in 1963, when I was 17, and I especially remember him on this Memorial Day weekend.

Not traditionally (and validly pre-Vatican II) -- "Holy God We Praise Thy Name" is not sung during exposure of the Sacrament -- that's reserved for "O Salutaris Hostia" and "Tantum Ergo". This hymn is in thanksgiving and praise as the recessional for certain.
WE quite often sing this hymn in the Catholic Church I attend. I think it is based on a 6th century Catholic canticle called the Te Deum Lauamaus which is sung at Morning Prayer in monasteries and convents on Sundays.
I cry every time I hear this. Reminds me a softer, more beautiful time.

This has been the great recessional at Catholic services in the US for decades.I had it played at my husband's funeral as such.
It was my dad's recessional at his Funeral Mass of the Resurrection.
I had it played at my mother's funeral when she died leaving 4 minor children. We survived.
Apparently, this was President Kennedy's favorite hymn.
