Amazing how, in a story featuring a giant winged vampire with glowing eyes, the biggest villain and the biggest monster still manages to be FUCKING BEV.
Right, i wouldn't even consider that creature a villain because he was doing what he could to survive and despite any of that he still had the decency to save Pruitt in the cave because he was praying to him
@@denofthieves6587 Well, I wouldn't go that far, the antediluvian was a villain. His reason to spare Pruitt was to gain a follower he could manipulate. And he kept up that cherade and managed to become a demi-god. So he gets fresh feeding grounds and an ego boost.
What's so special about Bev is that, she is NOT a timeless horror and yet manages to become a much bigger monster and schemer. A grotesque irony considering what she pretends to be.
I loved Bev. Best character in the damn thing
As horrible as Bev was, I hope that actress gets an Emmy nod. She was on fire the whole show, not just at the end.
@@slitor eh, I disagree. He wouldn't need Pruitt to gain followers... All he had to do was storm the mainland and take over. He could have slaughtered everyone on that island to gain followers and yet he didn't. Bev was the villain because she actually killed Pruitt which turned him into a vampire. Angel didn't kill Pruitt, he sucked most of his blood and gave him blood in return so he wouldn't die. The goal was to restore everyone to their health but Beverly happened and everything went wrong because she manipulated everyone. Pruitt wouldn't have needed to feed if he wasn't a vampire, unfortunately Bev poisoned him

Also the douchey deacon kid and that bearded fellow, they had a short dialogue about forgiving eachother. A direct reference to the Bible verse about man forgiving eachother for their trespasses. Made me tear up.

People who saw Midnight Mass didn't care to understand it. Midnight Mass ISN'T against Christianity or religion of ANY kind, it actually CELEBRATE religion, individually. Midnight Mass is against religious fanaticism which is profoundly different. Bravo Flanagan, you never disappoint.
Yeah I def didn’t get the idea that the show was against one or any religion in general, more so the using of religion to take advantage of peoples faith and to enact evils. I would say it more focuses on the exploration of religion, death, and the afterlife in general. Very good show, managed to get great horror while also making the viewers think.

Beautiful rendition to this hymn. The series is about the Devil (The Dragon), the Anti-Christ (Bev Keane) and the False Profit (Monsignor Paul Hill). The Bible warns us in the Book of Matthew 7:15 - 'Beware of the false profits, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.' The Book of Revelation 13:1 describes the First Beast (Anti-Christ) that is the Catholic Church. Rev. 13:3 - 'One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. In 1798, Napoleon sent General Berthier to Rome to kidnap Pope Pius VI (#6) who would later die in captivity, hence the Beast receiving a mortal wound. The Papacy and the Catholic Church had lost its power, its finances were in decline and did not reemerge from its mortal wound until 1929 when Mussolini and Italy awarded 109 acres in Rome to create a new papal state, The Vatican. The guy that played the priest is insanely talented. Every word he said seemed insecure and shaken, almost like he was battling with himself the entire time. Amazing performance.

I've seen him in bit roles for years. It really goes to show that there are so many others out who are insanely talented but just don't have the opportunity to show it.

For those who aren't muslim, let me explain something. So muslim prayers can be done alone or with two people, or more.
If it just two people with the same gender, then the person who called the Imam or the leader, stands in the left, whereas the ma'mum or the follower (sorry for the incorrect vocabulary, I'm a non native), stands in the right.
From episode to episode, Sheriff Hassan was always leading the prayer. But in the end, Ali lead the prayer. Which made a great character arc for Ali.
He was a normal muslim kid, started questioning his beliefs, lost in the wrong way, but didn't kill anyone even after changing to a vampire, helped his dad, and then lead the prayer.
That is the kind of cool, subtle thing I love in a well-done show like this. I’m glad you shared - I never would have known!

Really emotional little moment when Father Paul looks down at his daughter and then throws his priest's collar away. Not only does he feel unworthy of it, he's probably thinking, "If I hadn't worn that all these years, I could have been the father I should have been to you."
His character's whole story is such a tragedy.
Pruitt was an excellent case of hubris.
And yet, he led the whole town into such suffering and death.
You know what's even more tragic about that scene: the implication of Mildred's fate.
She never turned into a vampire, and Leeza's last line "I can't feel my legs" implies that the creature did not, in fact, outrun the sun. So the death of the creature suggests that its "gifts" are immediately taken away... which means Mildred is going to turn old and senile again, and just be completely alone on that island, with no one to turn to, and literally nowhere to go. Unless the children go back right away (which is unlikely; they're probably headed to the mainland).
That's fucking depressing...
Unless... we see that the creature did fly Mildred out of the church, but do we know for sure that she turned? Does it ever show it, explicitly?
Edit: Just re-watched the series. I got it; she turned. No need to keep commenting on it. I'm sorry for ruining everyone's experience.

When she wakes up at the beginning of the final episode post the Angel attacking her, she's not only young again, she has that "cat's eye light" look in her eyes that the vampires have. So yes, she was turned and she and Father Paul burned together at the end.
Sheriff fading out during a prayer with his son and Bev sobbing while frantically and pointlessly trying to dig shelter from the rising sun. Dignity.

And why i like it more is that it came from Annie. Not anyone else who clearly hate Bev, but from the saint Annie, someone who Bev has no grudge with. So it does struck Bev's heart

it's also cool because you so desperately want to just swear at her and call her names and such but Annie doesn't curse at all and is just so calm and matter of fact and I think it cut so much deeper than calling her a b**ch or something, I think the part about God not loving her more than anyone else also really stung for her.
My dad laughed when Erin shot Beverly and felt she(Erin) deserved better.
God that abrupt cut to silence of the singing was great

The fact Pruitt even as a vampire didn't immediately start chugging on blood like a psycho while being a vampire the whole time while majority of the town went immediate savage mode after being transformed says alot about his character and intentions.
I think it's more that he was simply more aware of what he was turning into and had more time to get used to it.

This whole series felt like a horror-poetry, Flanagan is fucking genius.
Horror poetry is a nice way of putting it!
So far, all 3 of Mike Flanagan's series on Netflix (This, Bly Manor and Hill House) are the only horror series to make me actually choke up and feel for the characters/story strongly. Anytime Bev pulled a quote out of her arse, i was like "god damn you evil bitch... but you're good" or when Sherriff Hassan talked about his wife to his son, that struck a chord with me. I swear all his shows are so relatable. From the writing to the performances... swear down Flanagan is special man.
Like Hill House, it felt the same way to me. That's his thing, it's what he is good at.
And yet somehow, It is not pretentious in the slightest
I like to call it sentimental horror, horror that plays with your damn emotions!
This was such a powerful ending. I love how Annie Flynn (Riley's mom), for just a side character, is basically the embodiment of the ideal Christian in the end. 1) She genuinely forgives and loves Riley despite his tragic mistake. 2) She lays down her life for her friends in her confrontation against Bev (albiet she knows she is coming back, but she certainly doesn't want THAT existence). 3) She resists temptation despite the world falling apart around her 4) Despite all of the horror she's witnessed and the knowledge of her impending doom, she is at peace with God in the end.

I cried so much for her. She reminds me so much of my mom, a Christian who puts emphaty, humility and trully unconditional love and care for everyone around her (even Beth, to some extent). The humility she confronted the horror and death in the final episode were awe inspiring.
I am currently atheis for unrelated reasons (I identify most with Raley) but if I have any respect for Christians at all is because of people like her.
I agree completely! I would have to say Mildred hurt me the most. She was such a genuine person you can tell. When she became younger, instead of embracing her youth, she understood this wasn’t natural so she joined in her daughters quest for answers. Just seeing Mildred composed and able bodied again spending those precious moments with her daughter was very heartwarming to see.
This goes for both of Riley’s parents, they might’ve pushed their religion a bit too much on Riley in the beginning just, but they accepted him in the end

You can (and should) hate her character, but let's appreciate what a good job Samantha Sloyan, the actress who plays Bev, did in her performance. It's easy to be cartoonishly evil, it takes skill to play it in a way that's relatable and recognizable in the people we interact with everyday.
Incredible actor! Good rule of thumb: if you hate a villain than the actor has done their job!

Hate the portray, never the portrayer. Samantha Sloyan is an amazing actress. Honest to God, this is the first time I saw her - or, at least, I remember seeing her - and I'm looking forward to seeing more of her, with a better, good-hearted character lol
@ Same here! The only thing I had seen her in before was The Haunting of Hill House (She's Steven Crain's estranged wife, so we only see little bits of her, but she still does phenomenal work when she's there!). She's incredible!!!

"In their last moments people show you who they really are." Most of the Crockett islanders were good people, who were simply led astray by a false shepard (Bev) yet here in their last moments after all the horror and bloodshed they finally come together and unite as one in that purest expression of true faith, that community spirit of oneness and love with a song in their hearts. Beautiful and dignified to the end.
Father John and Mildred cradling their dear daughter at her favourite spot. John tearing his collar off perhaps in acknowledgment of himself being unworthy of the title and knowing the part he played in all this, even with the best and purest of intentions, it caught up with him. He asks his dearest Milly for forgiveness. There is regret, remorse in his last words but without judgement she kisses him and they die together with grace.
Sheriff Hassan and his son Ali share one final prayer together, their respective faith shaken but never broken. The ties that bind were stretched and tugged but came back to greet the final dawn. Despite the horrors, prejudice and discrimination they suffered as outsiders their love and resolve is unshakable. They too find peace.
And then there's Bev...
And then there’s Bev…..
And then there f**king Bev.
Their song, which ceases on Earth, continues eternally in Heaven

Someone in the comments wrote a bible vers explaining bevs last moments of digging, a fitting end to an enemy of the core of religions.
The biggest victims were the Sheriff and his son. They came here seeking safety and ended up in a pure nightmare. I feel so bad for them.

At least, the Sheriff didn't suffer and as a muslim, when you die while you pray is the most merciful, peaceful, sufferless and honorable death one could have.
This is my favorite kind of unhappy ending - it's heartbreaking and sad, but not mean-spirited or cruel. I thought there was something genuinely beautiful about how things came together for all the characters and how they ultimately accepted their fate in various ways. Except for "you-know-who", but she had it coming.
It was kinda peaceful in a way.
Their fate is ultimately the fate of us all though hopefully not in the manner in which they perished. I hope I can accept my fate with dignity when my time comes!
This is one of the best written and conclusive endings I've seen in a while. The way that it shows what each character becomes as they face oblivion is bliss. The people who wanted to follow their God embrace their loved ones and accept death, whilst Bev reveres and is fearful of her afterlife. Monsigner Pruitt taking his collar off showing that he no longer deserved the role after he had lead his followers the their fate. And finally the sheriff and ali, by far the saddest and best moment of the ending scene. As much as Ali lost his faith, he was simply a teenager wishing to fit in with his peers, but in the face of death he stayed by allah. The two on the boat aswell, with the final lines of the show being melancholy and upsetting followed by a smile gives us that sense of satisfaction as we now know that the Vampire was no more. What an absolute masterpiece. I cannot stress enough how amazing a watch this was. Thank you Mike Flanigan.

There’s something beautiful about gentle endings.
What killed me about this series is that father Paul was clearly full of compassion for his flock. You could plainly see it in his eyes. That broke my heart. Some of the best acting I have ever seen.
I guess that's true but then it's also true that his ex-lover, the woman who grew much younger by the end, she said with conviction something like "don't go back to that church, that's not the man I knew and the church I knew."
So he was still...offensively wrong/changed? Even to her? Maybe just in the depths of his new fanaticism I guess....lol maybe I figured it out.
After finishing the series and looking back, I think that was when Bev Keane was really starting to push *her* idea of how they should act as vampires but yes, he does seem to be somewhat mentally unstable upon his return, and I wonder if it was due to his wild experiences, him having dementia before being healed, or just the fact that he was clearly deluding himself over the identity of the “Angel”.
Father Paul is literally the main bad guy of the series and is the reason everything got messed up. Bev was a horrible being but no one really respected her until the Miracles began. The Father is the reason her belief got amplified.

We're living in the golden age of modern horror. I'm 58. Been a fan my whole life.
But what's happening now. It's beyond jumpscares and haunted houses. There are Kubrick-esque masters popping up. Ari Aster. Eggers. Flanagan.
A smarter strain of horror is recieving the spotlight, and I'm seriously thrilled.

Can’t say exactly why but Jason and Freddy and even many other less corny series just could never appeal to me.
This is one of the first horror series i have EVER watched and honestly it was just so good. It just hooked me and drew me in.

Loved the show and this episode especially. One of my favorite parts was when Erin cut the angel's wings, referencing the story she told Riley about her and her mom. "We all get our wings clipped some day". Really cool.

I really love his stories but I wish they were scarier, everything is excellent but I rarely felt horrified.
@@hdo4ever I feel the same. It was leaning towards scary but then the flashback angel thing. Which was freaky. The angel had no life. He's shot at and just brushes it off. Maybe there's a point behind it. And I do get the end. But that angel being a terror around town and somehow being controlled by the father would've been better. To see that father character go full blown insane would've been a hell of a lot more fun. Wording meant there.
@@hdo4ever To me, good horror usually doesn't mean "jumpscare" spookiness. It's more about a sense of dread or disturbing atmosphere that uses horror imagery to explore troubling human behavior. For example, Midsommar is about gaslighting and miscommunication. The VVitch is about feminism and female characters trying to exist within strict religious structures. Annihilation is about how some people pursue self-destruction. The Thing is about mistrust among people. And this show is about hubris, unhealthy expressions of love, and addiction.
@@hdo4ever It's kind of satisfying really. Bev's death was filled with dread and pain because of her cowardice. Meanwhile everyone else died in peaceful silence because they were accepting their punishment.

I am so glad that Bev suffered. She died alone, friendless, abandoned, filled with terror, screaming in agonizing pain. First, I was afraid she'd dig the hole deep and survive this. Second, I was worried she'd die off-screen and we, the viewers, would be robbed of a satisfying villain death - I mean, come on. We were WAITING for that.
It was to show the one who claimed herself the most faithful, had no faith at all. While the others she thought as lesser Christians stood there and praised their god even in the face of death.
I actually feel sorry for her the most. She's a pathetic creature.

@@louwinters508 We saw enough to know what she wanted. She wanted to be the favorite among all of God's creatures, personally ushering in a new era that she could say she orchestrated herself, the prized jewel of the new world she was creating.
Remember the show is ultimately about forgiveness. Forgiveness for your enemies, forgiveness to yourself. Bev was a monster. But so are we if we relish in her suffering, no matter what she’s done. Keep peace in your heart, my friend.

As a Muslim in America, the final Fajr prayer that the sherriff and his son prayed together absolutely broke me.
that was the most powerful moment in the episode to me too, even though i'm not a muslim and not religious at all. he performs his morning prayers like he would at the same time any other day, with unbroken faith, despite everything he's just seen and been through, and despite knowing that he was about to die. such a great character.
the series was probably written by atheists. i'm glad the scene was able to evoke strong emotions from a muslim. that means the atheist writers did a helluva job.
bruh the son even became the imam and led the prayer after his struggle to keep his faith. :')
I'm a Christian man myself... and even I admit that scene got to me big time... as I myself have struggled with my faith at times.... it was such a great scene.
@@andrycanz8693 The series was written by Mike Flanagan (who is also, of course the creator of the show), it says in an interview with him that he is an Atheist now, but he says he grew up in a healthy Catholic upbringing, he also said he did many diving on other religions to write the show.
I do like learning about that because as a person in nearly the same position (though Agnostic), while I've always known how religiousness dabbles very closely into cult territory if taken to an extreme, looking at it as vampirism in ways besides likening it to the monster, is an interesting take.

I caught that, too. Loved the parallel.
I'm not religious so I don't know any religious music, and I kept wondering why the song their singing sounded so familiar. It was because I had just watched Titanic last month.
Watching the sheriff and his son pray together seriously did something to me and I'm a self proclaimed atheist... no parent should see their child die b4 them and he didn't and to see his son find his way back to his father even as death approaches touched my heart. Bev dying in fear and panic was true justice the saying "practice what you peach " seems fitting with her end she said all the right words, mirrored all the right moves but in her heart she was selfish and self righteous
The deeper part, and what had me crying, was that the son was leading him in his final prayer because the sheriff wasn't able to. All the times before, they showed him leading his son in prayer...so it came full circle - really nice detail to close the circle.
This ending was so fitting, these people worshiping God as they met their end, instead of screaming and being afraid like Bev, they were at peace and ready to see and be accepted by God.
A sweet ending indeed.

Bev was a psychopath
The hymn used in this scene, "Nearer My God, to Thee," is said to have been the song played by the string quartet as the Titanic sunk. They use it in the '97 film and it just rips my heart out 😭
Also used in Titanic (1953), as well as A Night to Remember (1958), the best Titanic film of all. I'm fairly certain Mike Flanagan drew from the '53 film for inspiration for the final scene.

@@SpiralSkylines to each their own, of course, but without ANTR, there would be no Titanic '97. Many scenes were directly copied by Cameron (no shame there, they were wonderful homages). I like both, but for me ANTR packs way more of a punch because it didn't need a fictional love story, it's all real.

@@sgpproductions9016 I get that. I just don’t always agree with the “if you didn’t have the one before it, you wouldn’t have it” stance. That’s true, but I don’t think the original is necessarily better because of that.
I think I’m more so in love with filmmaking in ‘97 than anything. Obviously ANTR won’t have that same quality of technicality because of obvious limitations back then. I also haven’t watched ANTR since I was younger, I might give it another go soon.
Monsignor Pruitt is one of my favorite characters in television this year. Such a complex and tragic character aided by a standout performance from an actor I had never even heard of before this show. I’m a fan now.

I was so annoyed when it first seemed like Bev was accepting her death with dignity. The sheer satisfaction when that bravado breaks and we see her for the cowardly worm that she is is by far the most gratifying moment of this heartbreaking ending.
We saw she was a cowardly worm already when she hid while everyone was doing the mass suicide. She was always looking after her own skin and lacked faith.

I loved how Bev saw the father and son praying. It really tied in to the sheriffs story about moving to the town. Like he never lost his dignity is spite of constant oppression, and in his last moments he shared that dignity with his son, while his oppressor (Bev) freaked out and was unaccepting of death

I couldn't have asked for a better end for Bev, and the fact that she is left, alone. She doesn't even pray or sing like everyone else because unlike them, she is too wrapped up in herself and her self-righteousness and pitiful desperation to give herself up to the God she preaches so much about. So much so that she tries to bury her head in the sand to save herself. She was so ready to sacrifice, condemn, and chastise others in the name of her religion, but when it came down to the final hour she burned away shrieking like a lone animal whereas everyone else found serenity in each other, all sinners love equally by their God, no matter what name they called him by.

What especially impressed me was the sincerity and humanitarianism of the conclusion, how almost all the characters redeemed, regardless of belief systems or lack of belief systems. Especially powerful was the last line of the show: "I can't feel my legs." Life without miracles is the real miracle.
Hill House: *has the most emotional ending*

I might argue that Bly manor had a more emotional ending than hill house, as great as it was with the bent neck lady and nellies monologue. like no judgement there, hill house is really good. but there's just something about Bly manors ending that had that extra "I'm gonna make you cry your eyes out."
As a Muslim, the ending scene of Ali and Hassan brought me to tears. Also, Riley's parents at the end were an embodiment of true Christians. Erin in the end talking to Riley explaining how we are all one single energy in this universe made me realize how selfish we can be sometimes. We all really are drops in an ocean, love is the essence of our existence.

I’m Catholic, and this scene was the main one that made my cry. First of all, the way Muslims pray looks so beautiful and sincere. Second, seeing Ali rejoin his father in their last moments in the faith he was raised with was just so BEAUTIFUL ❤️

I was already bawling like a baby, but when Hassan and Ali got to the beach and started praying, I completely broke. Shoulders shaking, and just saying “no” on repeat. After the credits, I had to sit for a good 10 minutes and cry. I’m not religious and my parents were raised lutheran, not catholic, but this show absolutely and completely ruined me in the best way. I’m going to be thinking about this for a long time, and I can’t wait to see what Mike Flanagan creates next.

I’ve loved nearly everything Flanagan has done in his career, but for me personally this is his masterpiece. It may be a mini series but it feels and looks like an epic 7 hour movie. It’s such a beautiful and heartbreaking series. The characters all feel real. The series is incredibly human.
I’ve heard people say they found the end anticlimactic or there to be too many monologues, but I honestly loved everything.
I wholeheartedly agree. Finished it tonight with my family, and I can safely say that whilst I may not have joyed every minute (I sometimes yelled at the tv when Bev was on screen) I was thoroughly invested and it stands as one of the best shows/miniseries I’ve ever seen, and is easily my new all-time favorite vampire story. It’s a beautiful show, and all the people who complain about the monologues are probably not grasping the whole weight of those scenes. I can’t imagine this story being told any quicker than it was; it’s perfectly paced in my opinion.

Bev freaking out at the last moment reveals that she either doesn't believe in God(using religion to powertrip) or is unsure if she will go to heaven because of her actions.

Yeah, i think she definitely had some clarity about herself in those final moments. I noticed that other characters had their own visions as they died, so I imagine she had her own.
I loved the fact that she died alone. That’s when she realized what an evil bitch she had been and that if there was a hell she was headed straight down to it.

I think it shows she was never a Christian because she only lived for the moment in which she existed, the absence of life is intolerable to her because she's attached to the physical world beyond all, showing that the person who prosthelytizes their spirituality the most is actually the most devoid of it, the person reciting Bible quotes is the person who never actually followed them and only uses them as weapons to twist others to their will.
Bev symbolizes the fake Christian, who makes Christianity their entire personality even though it's really just a tool for them to get what they want in life, never in death.
That ‘Forgive me’ from John breaks my heart

I thinks it's interesting how the vampires react to the sunrise. Riley, reconciled with his sins, peacefully goes off into the light. The townspeople go quickly and peacefully, mid song. Ali quietly looks into the sun.
And Bev, knowing what she's done, screams as she comes face to face with her fate.
The single line "forgive me" is so fucking powerful in this scene and gives me chills every time I hear it. What a masterpiece

The most beautiful part of this entire series was Sheriff Hassan and his son praying to Allah together.
And Flanagan giving Hassan the peace of dying before his son, rather than having to watch his son perish into ash, was one of the most beautiful character endings in this series.
The Muslim prayer is really beautiful.

This scene fills with me profuse sadness. Truly a heart-wrenching. One mistake ruined countless lives when some had so much to do and see. Mike Flanagan truly knows how to tear at ones heart-strings.
I don't think you can sum it up as simple a "mistake", Pruitt dug himself down pretty deep with delusion and self rationalization. His true motivation was to have a second chance with Gunning and and to aid his dying community.
But this compromize of his morals ended up with him falling for the true vampire in the series, Bev!
And things spiralled out of control quickly.
That's not a mistake, that's hubris. A big one.

This scene where Bev digs up the ground was so satisfying. To be honest, throughout the whole show whenever she talked or even uttered a single word i felt the urge to hit her with metal bar. That actress really brought out the character.
I agree. Her ending is painfully ironic. Bev wanted to lead all the rest of the islanders, and she's the one who winds up completely alone at the end. She wants to be the heavenly spiritual dictator, and she ultimately dies like an animal, burrowing in the ground (the traditional direction of hell rather than heaven).
It's wonderful to see how everyone who has become "vampires" let themselves die, aware of the fact that they have made the wrong choice and then leave themselves to their fate, while Bev tries to save herself like a coward but in the end she gets burned. What a fantastic show! Thank you Mike Flanagan!

@@jchandlersabeast Unfortunately Mike himself has said that while that COULD be the case... it could also be just that since she never fully turned that the sun may have just.... gotten rid of the vampiric blood. The angel may still be alive because, unfortunately, the hate and evil that it represents can never be killed forever.... but it can be weakened and driven out.... and that is what happened to it in the end. It was forced to run away when it saw that it was no longer welcomed to the village and that the sun was coming up with no place to hide it.

Was crying almost hysterically for a good twenty to thirty minutes during and after the ending of this show. This is, without a doubt, the most emotionally moving and tearjerking ending I’ve ever seen in any horror medium.
I get that the idea for the ending is that the kids represent Adam and Eve, but I really wish Sarah would’ve survived. She had someone waiting for her on the mainland and was waiting for her mom to die so she could leave. She never really had a life of her own.
Considering the ep was named Revelations, I think its more appropriate to say the kids represent those who were raptured but in reverse. They were spared by the boat, surviving the events of the island while those who were stuck there ended up being being consumed in hellfire of their own making.
Without Sarahs death the hubris of Pruitt wouldn't have come full circle.
The Gunnings was the main reason he brought the antediluvian to the island.
Without them his immortality was pointless.
I thought it was more of a Noahs arc type of scene. They are safe on the boat while the rest of the island burns and is destroyed.

Exactly lol I think a lot of people are overrating Father Pruitt because they find him attractive. He has good moments but he was no Bev, Annie or Riley. Strongest characters by far for me. The Sheriff was a noticeably good actor as well, he isn’t getting the attention he deserves.

But I too developed a crush on a woman, and she's not Erin, but Mildred. First, because her transformation from a frail old lady with dementia into that gorgeous redhead young woman astonished me, and second because Alex Essoe really charmed me as young Mildred.
In the end Bev proved to be the one with the weakest sense of true faith, who never wanted to live in a world of peace and harmony, but live in a world where she got to be the hero, the one who would get the last laugh, or the one who would get to say 'I told you so' to everyone else... she died afraid and in pain.
And ALONE
It's hard to feel any sort of sympathy for her given what a monster she is, but truth be told, she appears to be a very lonely person. She doesn't seem to have any family and no one on the island really seems to like her (they either tolerate her or outright can't stand her). She's stuck on this little island and the church is all she has. So her whole notion of herself as a favored child of God seems to be her coping with the loneliness and isolation of her life. God loves her and she's favored by Him, so she MUST be worth something, right?

Though I am not Catholic, Reily's mother is the embodiment of what a christian is. Many shows nowadays don't accurately represent what Christianity is, it will either be too progressive or a misrepresentation but at least through this character there is truth
Came here because the show still haunts me emotionally. This final scene is just the saddest but also the most beautiful thing. In the end, despite all the horror, I think the ending was a resounding affirmation of humanity.
Bev clawing in the sand is one of the most memorable images ever.
I love the juxtaposition of Sheriff Hassan and Bev Keane at the end. The Sheriff dies while doing his morning prayers (Dignity intacted) and Bev succumbing to her fear and digs into the dirt at the last possible second. For all the horrible stuff that happened in this show, I can't help but smile to seeing the Sheriff leave in peace and Bev die suffering mind and body.

As everyone dies singing together, repenting, forgiving one another, and making peace with God, Bev freaks out and tries to escape her death, because she knows what she did is unforgivable.

She just can't accept that she is going to die and the whole they are the chosen ones is a lie. She's scared that there is no god. She believed in the whole revolations thing in the bible. It's a common trope. Some people die and others don't. And earth becomes heaven on earth.
Now everything has gone wrong for Bev. She thought everything she had ever believed had come true and then it backfired.
She's having a crisis of faith and she's scared to die. Everyone else seemed to have been so profoundly affected by that night that they welcome death. They have accepted it. They are not trying to find shelter. And they don't really like who they are. There was one guy sobbing after he murdered his kids.
She wanted this. And it's all come crashing down around her. She's been terrified her whole life. Hard to love but easy to understand. Poor thing.
There is no plan. There is no justice and there is no nothing. We make it. If your whole life is based on expecting, hating, judging be sure to be disapoined.
The last few seconds when you don't get to see them burn or hear the end of the song gave me such goosebumps

When I was finishing Midnight Mass last night, I was barely holding it together during the ending. Sheriff Hassan and his son praying at the beach broke me.
Whatever religion or belief you have, as long as you're a good person and provide the world with positivity, i believe anyone will ascend to a beautiful afterlife if there is one. Your efforts wont be forgotten in the world.
I 100% agree with you man, but I can only think of three religions that actually believe in an afterlife for the soul, they all share the same God, and that dude is a dick. He’s just like “Good deeds will not win you favor in my domain. Only the singular, true belief in me. That I am. That I will be.” That’s when I stopped believing. Because if you can be the worst person in life, and go to Heaven because you believed in a guy, that’s bullshit. Grace is a gift freely given to all. No matter the choices you've made in life it's always there. Every major Abrahamic faith tells us that God holds the door for all to enter and only by refusing that gift, either through anger, pride, despair, etc. can it be closed. These faiths also hold that God has countless names that They have used throughout history to speak to man. YHVH, Jehovah, Allah, Buddha, Brahma, and beyond. Thousands of names all calling out to the human race with the same message, imploring us to love as a community, to live with generosity and to share ourselves freely, as God has shared with us.

Many interpret this, as a fact that you have to believe in the Son and Father. No, it's just a statement. He gave His life, so we can live. Anyone who answers their inner conscience is welcome...If the people can balance the good and bad in person and be able to love and forgive despite mistakes...Can the creator and love itself not do that? We don't fully understand God's workings entirely and, for all we know, ANYONE who has been a good, kind, loving and accepting person in life (many of the main things in any religion or just in general) and who has not committed too many horrible acts (like murder, racism, letting greed take hold, etc.) may very well be waiting, regardless of what they practice or who they are. Muslim, Christian, Jew, Straight, Homosexual, Transgender, black, white, Asian. God loves each and every one of us, even if some of our actions may break His heart at times. Think of the position he was when he went on his trip; aged, losing himself to dementia, having to watch the love of his life suffer the same, not able to let his daughter know she's his, facing the end with all these regrets. And then he gets an opportunity to get it all back and have the family he desperately wanted at last. His actions can be understood, if not condoned. The problem is he mistook a devil for an angel (but then, wasn't Lucifer that originally?).
He wasn't a villain at all. He put himself on the hands of a demon out of desperation, but however awful his actions were, I think they were always done out of genuine faith, at least before he started turning. In contrast to Bev who also mistook a demon for an angel, except she did everything out of religious fanaticism.
Honestly, is the demon even that bad of a person here? It's just doing its own thing and what it's essentially supposed to do. It's Bev who makes everything go wrong.

The ending monologue by Erin was epic and beautiful.

This matter, this body is mostly empty space after all, and solid matter? It’s just energy vibrating very slowly why there is no me. There never was. The electrons of my body mingle and dance with the electrons of the ground below me and the air I’m no longer breathing. And I remember there is no point where any of that ends and I begin. I remember I am energy. Not memory. Not self. My name, my personality, my choices, all came after me. I was before them and I will be after, and everything else is pictures, picked up along the way. Fleeting little dreamlets printed on the tissue of my dying brain. And I am the lightning that jumps between. I am the energy firing the neurons, and I’m returning. Just by remembering, I’m returning home. And it’s like a drop of water falling back into the ocean, of which it’s always been a part. All things… a part. You, me and my little girl, and my mother and my father, everyone’s who’s ever been, every plant, every animal, every atom, every start, every galaxy, all of it. More galaxies in the universe than grains of sand on the beach. And that’s what we’re talking about when we say “God.” The cosmos and its infinite dreams. We are the cosmos dreaming of itself. It’s simply a dream that I think is my life, every time. But I’ll forget this. I always do. I always forget my dreams. But now, in this split-second, in the moment I remember, the instant I remember, I comprehend everything at once. There is no time. There is no death. Life is a dream. It’s a wish. Made again and again and again and again and again and again and on into eternity. And I am all of it. I am everything. I am all. I am that I am.
That prayer with the sherriff and his son really hit me as a Muslim
I mean, I've been watching TV serials for 50 yrs - and trust me when I say that this is the best ending ever. Simply astonishing, touching, revealing. Superb.
They perform fajr prayer while they chanting in their own way for the last time calmly. This is a very beautiful and emotional scene. And the chanting tho i realized it was from the titanic where they play for the last time while the ship sunk. 🥺
I was so relived that ali chose to pray to his god with his father in the end. Sad but beautiful, it brought me peace
As a Christian, that scene broke me. I love that Hassan a) was able to pray one last time with Ali, and how his soul was at peace and b) God's mercy at taking him first ,sparing him seeing his son burn.
With the hymn being sung, it was quite possibly one of the most touching scenes I have ever seen.
And it was his son who conducted the final pray and Hassan was following his son.

LOVE that Bev died panicking the most. Out of all the people on the island, she turned out to be the most scared and unsure of what was going to happen to her after she died.
I feel like she was the only one who knew. She knew she was going to hell for misleading all of those people, and she was terrified
For a second I really thought she'd go out with dignity. It was beyond satisfying seeing her dig her hole in a panic.
