Alec Steele Blacksmith 2019
Alec: We're going to make this out of stainless steel damascus!
Me having read the title of the video: *doubt*
Y’all need to start making a prosthetic thumb for Will out of that titanium
Lol a titanium thimble
Mmm that'll be even more fun because titanium makes big hot sparks when you grind it lol.
@@michael_graper Dang you beat me too it
Will Rombilus he would need it once they finished it
eventually wills thumb is gonna become harder than steel with calluses so when he hits the belt sander it creates sparks
Alec: What should we make?
Everyone: Forge doors.
Alec: ok so a ring
*sEeMs LeGiT*
I wonder if you could help me make a ring filled with mercury?
Oh what a collab that would be!
Bent glass or lexan tube? Metal would be kind of hard to see-unless you just want the weight/ ability to slosh a small drop around.
That is good
@@unknown-ql1fk worse than that, mercury tends to amalgamate with anything it can. The slightest scratch will cause infiltration and destroy a metal ring. Lexan or another durable plastic is the way to go.
Please
So I've turned a LOT of titanium on the lathe before so hopefully this will help for next time. As you found out, it's hard as hell material wise. You can really only take 5 thou passes at a time, any more than that and it'll either eat your carbide, throw a nasty chip, or just gall and be gross. Also, it loves lube/coolant. Like lots and lots of it. Makes life a billion time easier. Also would've made your life easier if you'd ground through some of that oxide before putting it on the lathe. It's at least as hard as forge scale on normal steel parts and you wouldn't want to turn that stuff on a lathe. Also, as you found out, diamond burrs are the way to go, but you should really wear a mask when you're carving titanium. Getting that crap in your lungs is reaaaally bad. Iron is bad, but your biology can deal with iron. Titanium is so inert it'll just sit in your lungs forever till you cough it out, if you're lucky.
I've got a video on my channel where I turn some if you're interested.
Anyway, great project as usual! Hope this helps
How is the B-gal coming along with you? Still eating all the pizza?
Good tips. I'm going to check out your channel.
i knew there was a reason i was subbed to you
i am not even surprised to see you in alec's comment section
but what you said is right up my alley of content
i turn titanium at work. grade 5 and its not even that bad tbh, deffo grind the scale off , but titanium is not that hard to machine or grind, its pretty abrasive resistant, but honestly it cuts really well on the lathe lmao idk what the trouble is
ah yup thats another big one, please drench it in coolant. i mean tons, titanium fires in your chip tray are no fucking joke, its self oxidising i do belive
"We're making a ring!" (Starts with 12 pounds of metal.)
Adam Miller lmao!
friend of mine does titanium milling.
titanium fires are no joke, btw.
Isn't it kinda like magnesium but less flammable
@@pervertedchef4961 but i think if you throw it into water to kill the fire it will continue to burn under water.
Cool
Class D fire is no joke. I had a moment of panic when he showed that one chip glowing it's way off camera. That would have been the end of that shop if it had caught proper and ignited the rest of the chips with it...at the minimum the Monarch would have been a lost cause. Watch out with materials like titanium and magnesium. Know what you're doing and what they might do, and ultimately what to do about it. Ounce of prevention and all that.
@@Broadpaw_Fox yea I was really waiting for it and the ensuing attempt to ABC extinguisher it just spreading it instead. There are people that make Ti jewelry, but they use specific processes for it so they don't burn/melt their shop into slag.
Guys we need to start a gofundme to get Will a thimble to protect his thumbs while he grinds
I'm in
Or... he could... you know... make one?
@@ShaneWalta by the time he makes one he might not have any thumbs left
Maybe make one of titanium?
Hopefully, we see a Damascus Thimble build soon. :)
"A day may come when the procrastination of Men fails, when we forsake our bricks and weld steel plates together, but it is not this day. An hour of flames and shattered firebrick, when we finally make ourselves some damn forge doors, but it is not this day!"
i like the reference
Forge doors could definitely count as The Black Gate! 👍🏻
FORGEEE
This comment should be pinned
You are awesome.
Alec:hey do you guys dare me to forge a titanium ring in less than a day ?
Everyone: no dude why would you do that ?
Alec already on the power hammer: aw man you guys are horrible for making me do this haha!
Who's Alex?
Froggywhw lol
Nickolas Cardoza fixed
@@froggywhw488 You know, Alex Teale the guy on this channel
You need to forge Will a thumb guard to wear when grinding. The poor guy will never be able to hitch hike if he keeps this up.
Everyone that pup gives you paw, you tell him he's a good boy.
EVERY TIME.
Good girl. Yogo is a girl if I remember correctly
We need more of Yogo, puppies should be a mandatory part of every episode!
Can we start a petition for them to make forge doors or is that not bothering anyone else?
It’s bothering everyone
I think they are doing it to us on purpose now.
I concur
Title: titanium
Alec: stainless steel
Me: hold up
Edit: I know he change the material later on but still I need to do this, also a remind for myself, title is written with only a t not double.
And then Alec happend in the Video 😂😬
Tittle
I was wondering right away because the sparks werent white so i knew it wasnt titanium in the beginning.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one haha
December: “Steele! Stick in your lane!”
January: “Welcome to Part 1 of a titanium suit of armor, it’s gonna be a blast!”
You know what would look great in that shop?
TITANIUM FORGE DOORS.
Yeah after a year of no doors they'd finally have some. Next day the doors are mysteriously missing but Will's holding a nice new knife with a slight blue tinge whilst trying to look innocent...
Or stainless steel Damascus forge doors
Or ANY forge doors...
4:32 that mood change 🤣 and was I the only 1 thinking that he was swearing
yo, Alec. Make a Celtic silver or gold braided ring
I said this on the last video, make it yellow, rose, and white gold. I can send a picture if needed.
y’all could make a wreath from the small leaves welded together for christmas
"I only slightly removed part of my body today" is a concept I've never heard turned into a potential positive before now.
Maybe Will needs a grinder buddy to watch him closely while he works...
Alec's just working in the office too much lately to do it well.
Loving this video. My guy is unflinchingly honest and its endearing. But he still follows through. He knows he is learning a lot so he doesn't quit.
Guffaw! Alec:"shipping to Canada" Will:"Oh, that's too bad"
I love seeing Alec try new and unfamiliar things, the ways he runs into difficulties or mishaps, then finds ways to work through and around them, are always inspiring.
Also I can see heat-coloured titanium getting big on this channel, very showy like the damascus.
Alec…. Make Forge Doors!
3:45 OH MY GOODNESS THE RUMORS ARE TRUE. THIS IS A SHOW ABOUT TWINS!
Working with titanium for years, my best suggestion is cutting with low rpm's.
Cool ring!
Was just rewatching some Alec Steele vids and THIS popped up. Brilliant.
17:07
Oh not fair!
Now I have to like the video!
That titanium is just like butter when it's in the power hammer! So awesome!
When your cutting pieces on lathe you should use some coolant to prevent the piece heating much and not destroying the tools.
They know that.
Machining on UA-cam is generally done without coolant so that the audience cam see what is happening.

This right here feels like one of your older videos that I love! Keep up the great work.
I want to see a video named "today is the day!" And it's the video where you gonna make the doors of the forge
I think out of this whole video Yogo is the one who worked the hardest, he deserves a treat.
will just wants that polished finish on his thumb
Alec, your jewelry work has come a very long way! It is always helpful long-term to have drilled a small hoke through for cleaning under and around the stone in the future. Keep up the great work!

I’ve gotta tell you Alec, I’ve been enjoying watching forging and smithing videos for quite some time, but in just the last year or so I’ve decided that I actually want to DO this. To make things and generate tons of doise and learn, learn, learn as much as possible all the while. Sadly I’m 34 and a father of three very small children, so as yet I have had neither the funds nor the time to actually get myself started. But I think a couple months ago or so now, I subscribed to your channel and started following your videos in earnest. And I just wanted to let you know that, for such a young guy who is, himself, still learning new things all the time, you are without a doubt the most inspiring and educational smith that I’ve yet had the pleasure to watch work. Even if it is just UA-cam, I feel enormously enriched from the way you approach the craft and your own desire to improve with each new thing you make. I plan to take your advice and take a few classes on blacksmithing and welding, and even if it takes a decade or better, I’m gonna make some stuff. So thank you. Sincerely. For trying to actually make the rest of us just a little bit smarter and more capable.
Alec: I don't know how we're going to get this ring finished on time
Yogo: move over boss, I got this
17:04 Yogo Steele is the cutest puppy I’ve seen yet!
New year's resolution: forge doors.
man, titanium looks so pretty glowing from the forge
Canada to Will: am I a joke to you?

you should make brass arrow heads out of spent casings.

Hi Alec
To stop the steel from warping, you got to pre-warm the metal to about 150°C for avoiding bends during the welding process.

"They might even be shipping to Canada", Don't temp me so hard I gotta buy Christmas gifts, dang
Hammers are Canadian made, but we buy them in Canada, that is some shady bs
@@Gantzz321 Well, it was in reference to the surface grinder attachment
Dude... buy yourself a gift.
loved seeing Will get some forge time it seems like he's is prone to injury when it comes to grinding. Alec Sweet ring and good job meeting that timeline and figuring something out last minute.
You know, I'm kinda over those forge doors already.
A brilliant creation. The heat bluing compliments the design beautifully. Keep doing what you do!
You should make the beskar steel bars from the new Star Wars show the mandalorian, they are Damascus, look it up!
I just love the way titanium looks when hot. So satisfying
4:35 Alec what did you say? 😳
For real... lol
"Ace Hardware Store" was bleeped out I believe.
@@glOckcOma Oh I thought he was cussing out at Will 😂
Makes sense. But wasnt what it started to sound like🤣
Or maybe a town name he didn't want to advertise for privacy
Absolutely DON'T stick in your lane. It's fascinating to see you work with the challenges and intricacies of different materials, I love it.
I heard the beep and I was like, what swear was that? Then i knew, it was the Friendly Hardware Folks place.
I know it's like 9 months later, Will. (I just discovered this channel a few days ago.) But when I was in my last semester of culinary school I used to grind away my thumbs all too often when sharpening my knives. It was one of my last required classes so by the time that class started my chef knife could double as hammer. It was awful. But by the end of that last class my knives were some of the sharpest in class. Now human blood and cooking don't really mix. So our chef taught me to wrap the end of my thumb in a single layer of that thick foamy medical tape before I started sharpening my knives (just to cushion it). The repeated motion grinds away the tape instead of my skin that way. It saves my favorite thumb a lot of pain. I'm not sure if this might also apply to your specific situation, but I thought I'd offer the suggestion. It feels a bit weird but it helps and you need your thumbs.
Ah yes, Alec once again Cheese forging
HEY STEELE, stay in your lane? Try, you can do it! I believe in you.
“Its crack city” Wait they’re in Montana not Detroit
David I like how he didn’t heart this😂 I’m sure he got a good laugh though
Titanium is 1 of my favorite materials. It's light, versatile, strong, and it catches fire when you don't treat it correctly. That's totally metal!
*video starts at **1:21** thank me later*
ay thanks man, its people like you that make me save time on videos, like the geico gecko of youtube lmao
Was nice seeing Jamie on the videos again, it's been a long time.
Hey Alec! Can you try to make a Composite Sword/Whip Sword? I know its super hard, but can you try?
Your work ethic is impressive. That titanium have you hell, but you preserved. That is one awesome ring!👍
I'm curious as to why doesn't Ace want to have you advertising for then? Just because they don't want to pay you anything?
Zander why sponsor him when he plugs them for free?
That's why I don't understand why they wouldn't want him plugging them.
I highly doubt Ace asked him to bleep it, I think it's more Alec being a bit "fine, I'll show them" and doing it himself. It's also a bit of a joke, so it could easily just be that. I mean, we all knew what he was saying/referring to.
You may hate working with titanium but tbh you did a great job that just goes to show how talented you are🖒 great vid.
Maybe Will should start wearing work gloves while he still has all his fingers.
Jeff Liggett do not wear gloves on rotating equipment. If it catches it can suck your hand in. This is bad news! Without gloves the worse you get is a cut or a scratch.
Not generally advised to wear gloves while operating moving machinery. Glove gets caught and bye bye.
It's good seeing him back doing jewels n stuff

Sounds like UA-cam to me
10:55 Cutting fluid (coolant) helps a great deal, both cutting and combustion.
For the love of all that is holy Alex get poor Will some gloves to wear while grinding before his name has to be changed to stumpy lol
Titanium has such a pretty color when heated up, and stays so smooth when forging
Anybody else confused by the title and what is going on? Because it says titanium but they are starting on stainless steel Damascus...
Watch the full video before commenting buddy

Check if your tig welder had a pulse setting. Having pulse decreases heat put in the piece
That hot titanium is just so darn pretty.
Cool to see Jamie again, maybe he will visit you in Montana and you can do a cool build together for old times sake!
Watching the metal move while the impact driver twists on it is amazing. It looks almost like the video is dropping frames the way it twists incrementally at seemingly random points.
Wow those forge doors look awesome!
This attachment is awesome! 3:17
Could one tilt the bed of the surface grinding attachment to grind an even bevel along the whole blade?
A secret I learned about welding stainless is to pre-heat it to around 400-500F before welding to prevent it from warping (cracking in your case).
Ms. Yogo did so well, I think she deserves a promotion! ;) [Lovely ring, Alec!]
Hi Alec,
with this message I challenge you to make a falconryknife. Its a special huntingknife. When an eagle or a hawk or falcon catches prey ,the falconer kills the prey with this knife. But because the bird is sitting on the rabbit or pheasant, a long blade could hurt the birds toes. Thats why only the first 2,5 cm of the knife are sharp. After this 2,5 cm there is a little score. The rest of the blade is dull. If you decide to accept this challenge ,i can send you some patterns and more explications. I am soon getting my first hawk. If you wouldnt want to keep it , i would buy it.(Sorry for my bad english i'm german) best wishes from germany

In addition to what others have said regarding the lathe (use coolant, wear a respirator when turning, grind oxide off first). Please, also catch any parted bits off so you don't damage the slides and wear em out! Pretty please! It's such a beautiful machine you have there!
I love the way titanium looks when forged, please use this metal butter more!
Just for Will, start wearing a leather thimble on your thumb to prevent so much loss. With the leather thimble, it will allow you to push on the project into the grinder for a better feel. I also recommend having several thimbles on hand I to seem to grind a hole in often but not my finger. Remember to turn the thimble around 180 and use the other side after this time to go to the trash. Do not let the PUP get to these due to choking hazard. As someone below wrote maybe a titanium diamond incrusted thimble would work.
Loved watching you learn about "difficult material" and jewelry
Alec's New Years Resolution?
*FORGE DOORS*
Titanium is a great material!
I got my wife and myself titanium wedding rings, and they are great!
They never get cold when i work outside in the snow, they are light and they don't wear down.
Come to the Jewelery Quarter in Birmingham, you could buy Titanium tube ready to make into rings ! No need for a lathe where expensive Titanium swarf goes to waste on the floor of your shop !
Great job. Even better that you are willing to admit when things aren't going well instead of glossing over them. Thanks again for such great content.
I couldn't imagine wearing a ring that wide without and inside taper. My wedding band is titanium and about 1/4" wide with an almost circular cross section. It makes a huge difference in comfort.
Also it really helps to use an oil and water based coolant when turning titanium to keep the fire and burning metal down
You guys are finding some cool ass background music for your videos lately. 🤘
