So I've turned a LOT of titanium on the lathe before so hopefully this will help for next time. As you found out, it's hard as hell material wise. You can really only take 5 thou passes at a time, any more than that and it'll either eat your carbide, throw a nasty chip, or just gall and be gross. Also, it loves lube/coolant. Like lots and lots of it. Makes life a billion time easier. Also would've made your life easier if you'd ground through some of that oxide before putting it on the lathe. It's at least as hard as forge scale on normal steel parts and you wouldn't want to turn that stuff on a lathe. Also, as you found out, diamond burrs are the way to go, but you should really wear a mask when you're carving titanium. Getting that crap in your lungs is reaaaally bad. Iron is bad, but your biology can deal with iron. Titanium is so inert it'll just sit in your lungs forever till you cough it out, if you're lucky.
I've got a video on my channel where I turn some if you're interested.
Anyway, great project as usual! Hope this helps

I’ve gotta tell you Alec, I’ve been enjoying watching forging and smithing videos for quite some time, but in just the last year or so I’ve decided that I actually want to DO this. To make things and generate tons of doise and learn, learn, learn as much as possible all the while. Sadly I’m 34 and a father of three very small children, so as yet I have had neither the funds nor the time to actually get myself started. But I think a couple months ago or so now, I subscribed to your channel and started following your videos in earnest. And I just wanted to let you know that, for such a young guy who is, himself, still learning new things all the time, you are without a doubt the most inspiring and educational smith that I’ve yet had the pleasure to watch work. Even if it is just UA-cam, I feel enormously enriched from the way you approach the craft and your own desire to improve with each new thing you make. I plan to take your advice and take a few classes on blacksmithing and welding, and even if it takes a decade or better, I’m gonna make some stuff. So thank you. Sincerely. For trying to actually make the rest of us just a little bit smarter and more capable.

I know it's like 9 months later, Will. (I just discovered this channel a few days ago.) But when I was in my last semester of culinary school I used to grind away my thumbs all too often when sharpening my knives. It was one of my last required classes so by the time that class started my chef knife could double as hammer. It was awful. But by the end of that last class my knives were some of the sharpest in class. Now human blood and cooking don't really mix. So our chef taught me to wrap the end of my thumb in a single layer of that thick foamy medical tape before I started sharpening my knives (just to cushion it). The repeated motion grinds away the tape instead of my skin that way. It saves my favorite thumb a lot of pain. I'm not sure if this might also apply to your specific situation, but I thought I'd offer the suggestion. It feels a bit weird but it helps and you need your thumbs.

Titanium is 1 of my favorite materials. It's light, versatile, strong, and it catches fire when you don't treat it correctly. That's totally metal!

I highly doubt Ace asked him to bleep it, I think it's more Alec being a bit "fine, I'll show them" and doing it himself. It's also a bit of a joke, so it could easily just be that. I mean, we all knew what he was saying/referring to.

Jeff Liggett do not wear gloves on rotating equipment. If it catches it can suck your hand in. This is bad news! Without gloves the worse you get is a cut or a scratch.

Watching the metal move while the impact driver twists on it is amazing. It looks almost like the video is dropping frames the way it twists incrementally at seemingly random points.

A secret I learned about welding stainless is to pre-heat it to around 400-500F before welding to prevent it from warping (cracking in your case).

    Hi Alec,
with this message I challenge you to make a falconryknife. Its a special huntingknife. When an eagle or a hawk or falcon catches prey ,the falconer kills the prey with this knife. But because the bird is sitting on the rabbit or pheasant, a long blade could hurt the birds toes. Thats why only the first 2,5 cm of the knife are sharp. After this 2,5 cm there is a little score. The rest of the blade is dull. If you decide to accept this challenge ,i can send you some patterns and more explications. I am soon getting my first hawk. If you wouldnt want to keep it , i would buy it.(Sorry for my bad english i'm german) best wishes from germany
    Jonas

In addition to what others have said regarding the lathe (use coolant, wear a respirator when turning, grind oxide off first). Please, also catch any parted bits off so you don't damage the slides and wear em out! Pretty please! It's such a beautiful machine you have there!

Just for Will, start wearing a leather thimble on your thumb to prevent so much loss. With the leather thimble, it will allow you to push on the project into the grinder for a better feel. I also recommend having several thimbles on hand I to seem to grind a hole in often but not my finger. Remember to turn the thimble around 180 and use the other side after this time to go to the trash. Do not let the PUP get to these due to choking hazard. As someone below wrote maybe a titanium diamond incrusted thimble would work.

I got my wife and myself titanium wedding rings, and they are great!

I couldn't imagine wearing a ring that wide without and inside taper. My wedding band is titanium and about 1/4" wide with an almost circular cross section. It makes a huge difference in comfort.

Also it really helps to use an oil and water based coolant when turning titanium to keep the fire and burning metal down
