How do you feel about short workouts?

    • @Pantherdebba

I started exactly 1 year ago working out consistently every week because I started doing this short workouts. That said, I soon started to understand that it wasn’t sufficient if I wanted to gain muscles. These beginners workouts have a time and space when you have to start somewhere. What I disagree on though is the misleading message that you can achieve their physic just circling your arms for 10 minutes. They’re lying, and that’s not ok.
On the other hand, people find convenient to believe that they can workout for 10 min a day. It’s 50/50 ⚖️.
Love your content Harry and every time you post I like immediately to help you reaching your goal 😜😘

I love that these ridiculous workouts give you a fairly decent pool of nonsense to react to, but that's about all they're good for.
Unless you're someone who started with these short duration routines and was able to build dedication instead of giving up, but most people give up when they don't get their misrepresented results.

When I started to workout again I only did 10 minute workouts because I was so overwhelmed with the thought of doing more. Now, after a year of consistently working out, I typically do 30-60 minutes about 4 times a week. A 10 minute workout for me now doesn't feel long enough, but it was very helpful to just get me started at first!

@@brittneyhuggins9541 The first videos I started with were Holly Dolke videos, she had a summer challenge and most of those videos were about 10 minutes long. After that I started doing Team Body Project workouts, theirs are longer, but they are geared more towards actual beginners. Some cardio videos claim to be beginner, but I guess I'm even more beginner than beginner! I would really recommend Team Body Project videos, they have some shorter ones as well. Also, I did Leslie Sansone 10 minute walk videos which were a lot of fun. Now a days I do a lot of Caroline Girvan videos, she's amazing if you're interested in more weight videos. I also do some yoga for resistance now as well. Good luck to you!

They work for me, I guess it's bc I'm not fat but just need a little toning, plus most of these videos don't come alone, it usually comes w a program schedule w like 4 or 5 other 5- 45min workout videos you need to follow & do, you don't just do one alone, I've seen ppl make videos like these of chloe and the others but fail to realise that the "lose arm fat" video is part of a workout schedule that consist of full body cardio workouts, workout w weights/dumbells, and others, so if you're doing the "lose arm fat" video you need to do the other 3 or 4 videos in the program. Plus many of them always tell you to do cardio w their "lose inner thigh fat" videos.
I think it's fair to these fitness youtubers yall effectively bash to mention that.
I think these aren't for overweight people but people who want to tone up tho. But consistency is the key, so overweight ppl can still do it.

To be fair I lost weight and toned my body relying only on those short videos and cardio. Never my intention was to build a muscle, but to get smaller and tighten the skin which I got from these workouts 100%! I definitely disagree that they're bad, only bad thing is what they say because it sounds quite unrealistic and silly. However, they do work like any other form of movement if you aren't used to it. They're much more fun than the gym for me, so I will forever stick to them just adding weights from time to time.

I prefer short workout videos. My attention span is low and I like that these get to the point and are quick. I do a series of short workouts back to back from various people for up to an hour and 30 minutes. And that works for me. When I try to do single workout videos that are 30 minutes or longer each, I get bored, I zone out, and I end up stopping half way through.

I took a yoga class the other day and actually did that "wrist flicking" exercise, but it was used as a warm-up for the forearm extensor muscles, hands, and somewhat the wrists for an arm-balancing focused class. Yes, it burned and got the blood flowing, but I can't see it being used for any sort of muscle building. So it was interesting, to say the least, to see this used towards the end of her short workout. Love the channel, man!

At the beginning of my weight loss, I did a lot of short workouts. Why? Because I was so unfit. Even doing 10 min of a workout was so hard for me. With time I increased weight/resistance and time. Unfortunately most fitness influencer don’t inform well. Don’t explain the exercise/pros/cons/form/goals with exercise. It was mostly my curiosity how much I could push.
Weightlifting since February. my training partner and fitness influencer like you and Dr. Mike and Jeff nippard kinda trained me that with every exercise, I should ask myself why I am doing it and how. Game changer.
Yesterday reached Sumo DL 140 kg (>2 my BW).

The SECOND I put down 3-5lb weights and ditched "10 min" workouts , my body changed. I really wish we could stop with the narrative of "long and lean" workouts, too. They are marketed in a very specific way to target specific people who buy into the idea that women will get "bulky" ( i hate this term) if they lift heavy. Daisy got this body from lifting heavy. A year or so ago I tried out some of these 10 minute workouts (Chloe Ting), and it really did work. I lost over 15kgs, but that was WITH a reduced diet and following her schedules. However, I don't believe you can go the whole way with those kinds of videos (I did end up joining a gym). So, I guess to me these videos hold a certain amount of sentimental value because they mark a turning point in my life. It's just kinda sad to see them so flooded with false promises. I fell into that negative mindset, feeling like it was my fault that I wasn't getting the desired results when really, the workouts weren't suited for the outcome I wanted (I'm young, impressionable and glad I learnt my lesson).

I did these kind of workouts in my teenage years. I believe if there was more weightlifting information for women out there when I was younger, I could have progressed far quicker. Instead, I 'only' started lifting heavier weights when I was 23. The problem I also have with these workouts is that it promotes the stereotype that women need to be lean with 'long' muscles, and not get too 'bulky'. I appreciate how this perspective changed over the years and I see a lot more women in the gym lifting weights than when I first started out. But it also sometimes makes me wonder what I could have achieved if I started lifting in my teenage years.

I agree with all of this! I think all types, volumes and lengths of workouts are of value depending on the person doing them and their goals. for me personally, I have a chronic illness and some days 10 minutes is all I can physically manage as to not compromise myself for the rest of the day, but I would much rather do the 10 minutes than nothing at all. the problems arise, exactly as you said, when influencers start making unrealistic claims and intentionally appeal to young girls/women wanting to change their bodies. ‘10 minutes is nothing!! I can do that so easily and get amazing results like her!!’. no, likely not. I think that these "fitness influencers" absolutely deserve more criticism. They are far more concerned with getting as many views/likes as possible, at the expense of actually helping their followers. Most of these "influencers" are in relatively good shape, so they must have some degree of fitness knowledge, which means they're fully aware that these ~10 minute exercise videos full of sub-standard exercises are next to useless, but because they are quick and easy to do they know that these videos will attract a large number of views. Clearly they couldn't care less about the people who look up to them and listen to them for guidance.

    Video Notes:
Daisy Keech and Workout: I’m confused by the “keeping the arms long” comment too, as far as I’m aware you don’t have to do anything special for that if you already have long arms. Right away from the beginning, this isn’t exactly looking like a shoulder workout. Some good tips from you on lateral raises here, definitely some stuff I’m going to incorporate here. I knew you’d be calling out the front raise as well, and I already had a good laugh at the shoulder circles and essentially flapping the arms about when you shared them to us last night. Overall, not really optimal here at all.
10 Minute Workouts: I agree that these workouts give the illusion of effort, just because the muscles might “burn” afterwards, but in reality, very little benefit or gain. Not going to say much here, everything you say is on point and these definitely need to be called out for giving people false expectations and possibly causing some feelings of inadequacy as well.
How To Makes These Workouts Better: Not going to say much here again either, I agree again with quality over quantity. Luckily there actually are some people on the platform (such as yourself) that actually do care about the evidence and providing people with quality information that is also affirming and good for their mental health, and I know your audience appreciates you for it.
Concluding: Again, very informative video, it was well tolerated, with some good informative bits and looking out for people’s mental health (all of the things you are great at!). Very appreciated.

Many people who use these videos like the ones in this video, don't realize that struggling is what in fact should be happening! I've seen comments say "I love how Caroline is not afraid to show us that she's struggling." Well of course not, that's what training is supposed to be like. It's not supposed to be easy. Also, I don't think most people get into training via these types of videos. Most probably see no results from videos like this DK one and then give up. The majority, get on a "health kick" do these videos and then a couple months later give up. And it becomes a cycle of them doing these ineffective workouts on and off and never actually decide to learn about actual effective methods. Of course a few do, but a majority don't. That's why these types of videos have a crazy amount of views. Cause people want quick easy workouts and will continue to do these.

Honestly, i think "long and lean" is code for not with a lot of fat and mostly muscle. I dont have it, but TikTok seems to be the reason for that where people get cancelled for saying anything that remotely, tangentially, or figuratively bad about fat. It's just marketing buzzwords but it probably keeps people from attacking the influencers
Edit: also to add, pretty sure these influencers fully know their workouts aren't effective, they have beauty teams.. they make the assumption that their viewers know less than they do, and their entire brands are based on their looks. If their looks can be achieved, they dont have a brand anymore because the girls can become the "hot girl" too. So they give semi decent advice and a lot of bad advice to stay on top

She's a personal trainer and her workouts add that little bit of fun with the music and all so you don't get bored, and on top of that I feel like you can see her getting a little tired with you. Which....Now that you bring it up, is what I noticed in a lot of the people you have criticized. They're not getting tired because these aren't even near the moves they actually do to get their physique. I totally get that times are tough and content creation is a good income when you really break through to large audiences, but the disingenuity does suck, especially because at best it can lead to wasted time (Or money for the people sellingapps) and at worst it can cause injuries.

There is this adorable girl called Damji who posts her weight loss journey on youtube and she does follow these types of workouts, combined with daily long walks and trying to follow a good diet. She’s been able to stick to it for like years and it’s kinda working for her. I have no qualifications to judge the effectiveness of her lifestyle but it brings me great joy watching her get excited about working out and getting healthy. I think that’s a good example of where it’s good to have short workouts readily available on youtube. The key here tho is that I don’t think she’s even considering the possibility of looking like these influencers, and she’s just doing it to move and have fun.

Short workouts are excellent for beginners and I think they're so great to get people moving.
As someone who allots 2 hours of their day to training for marathons + hiking, I love throwing a quick one in if I find I've reached my goal for the day quicker than expected, OR on days when I am feeling bleh and can't bring myself to do my full routine but still want to get a little movement in.
That's it though, and I feel like these fitness UA-camrs should put disclaimers that they dedicate many hours a day to actually creating these routines and doing the workouts + they go to the gym and lift to get the definition they have, which is significantly more effort and time than the 20 mins advertised.
Not to mention, doing the same video every day as instructed will do nothing in the long run, as it's all about progressive overload/beating personal bests.

I personally try to gain knowledge from you videos, ( and to see your handsome face 👀 of course, but I digress) . I'm having a hard time visualizing the muscle groups your talking about especially when trying to relate them to the videos . So when you explain or scrutinize the movements in this shoulder workout it would help to have a visualization of the general group of muscles that will get the brunt of the work.

Maybe if you point out on yourself where the workouts are suppose to be beneficial , that will help. Unless you want to use a photo or video what have you....

I see a lot of people in the comments being like "oh these short exercises aren't for overweight people, it's for think people wanting to get toned." Essentially, I think these are meh, just okay at best, for beginners intimidated by lifting weights. If your starting point is 0, of course any form of moderate exercise is going to feel hard.
Years ago in my highschool years I fell for these 10 minute workouts. I'd do a few different ones to total 40-60 minutes of them. The problem with these is you very rarely have the opportunity to progressively overload and the rate at which you see results will wane over time. It helped me lose weight (of course, because I wasn't active at all prior), and I saw some quick results for a couple months then plateaued and they became so easy it wasn't even a workout anymore. After like almost 2 years of consistency with those I got into college and I stopped them. Then 8 months ago I got consistent with weight training. The changes I saw in my body and strength in my first 4 months were just wow compared to 2 years of body weight with several 10 minute exercises 🙄. Because of progressively overloading. Not to mention I'm finally getting the 🍑 I always wanted.
I guess everyone has their goals and do what works for you if it keeps you active and if biomechanically you ensure these won't hurt you, but these workouts will only get you so far because they just become too easy over time.

love your videos! but I just have a quick question, i know you mention about a full range of motion being important, so does this mean that holds and pulses (eg squat holds, lunge holds, glute bridge pulses) aren't effective? They really burn but is this just one of those where I'm feeling it but not really working it? thanks :)

    • @TFNL

It really depends on the goal, but for building muscle I often try to avoid things like pulses :)

Hey, love your videos, keep them coming!
    QUESTION ALERT❗
What do you think about HIIT with heavy weights?
From watching your videos, I feel like everything comes down to how much you lift and how much you rest (the heavier/longer the better).
And I get it, I've been a gym gal for years, but after trying the FYR program (Hannah Eden) I just felt that was it for me.
I still lift heavy, but my rest periods are not even near to those at the gym.
And it's been great for me in terms of results, however, I'm starting to question everything since I subscribed 😂
So, yeah, just interested in your opinion.
    Anyways, keep it up!

As a personal trainer, I will say the biggest red flag with heavy HIIT is the increased chance of injury due to the lack of recovery time and the pressure to perform more under fatigue. There’s a reason most HIIT workouts use less or no additional resistance than bodyweight. However, circuit training is a reasonable alternative that still allows for speedier workouts with heavier weight and appropriate recovery time

These workouts are definitely motivating considering they're straightforward and short but never are the key to get for example with the glute workouts,a larger butt,I feel we need to lift weights in that case to get where they got (and of course with these workouts or heavy lifting u need to modify your diet based on what u want)
