  • Practically the reason I went to CP Plus 2019 was to touch the Panasonic S1. It is great. Great in the hand, great features, amazing UI, and speedy AF, but only in single point and static.
I hope this video shows a few of the S1's real keepers.
Update: My mate, Genki U, kindly shot this video via his iPhone XS. Check out his instagram here: / genkiu

Of course I had just ten minutes or so. Seems like a great design.

A valuable field report, thank you. Both the Leica X Vario (Typ 107) and X (Typ 113) implemented centre magnification in manual focusing on their rear screens. The resolution was - in my humble opinion - not high enough for critical focusing, but it would be an interesting idea for Leica to add it via firmware to the SL / SL2 (the EyeRes surely has adequate MP for it). I’m confident the SL2 will feature an updated EVF and higher MP sensor. IBIS would be interesting too: Stephan Schulz (PM SL line) has hinted at this (ref. Oct 2018 interview posted by T. v. Overgaard) and its appeal in offering a native Leica platform that stabilises M lenses. But Leica would have to grapple with not impacting M body sales vs the SL line. Even then, it’s likely not going to make me want to trade in my SL as long as Leica continues to treat SL users to firmware updates after the SL2 release (at least until the SL3). There is something about having the first SL that I think will make me want to hold onto it. The originality of its design when released comprising a new reference statement and path for Leica. A ‘future classic’? Time will tell...

Thank you for the considerate response. I am also an M owner and consider the SL and M not in any way compatible nor do I understand how M sales would be impacted by the SL being beefed up with stabilisation, and more. M owners and users are a unique bunch that really don't want or need something out on the fringes. That said, there are things the M cannot do or cannot do well, and which necessitate a different camera.
The SL is beautiful. As I said, I wish it had a CSM switch, and de-coupled AF-ON functionality from the joystick. A dedicated AF modes dial/button to be engaged with a long hold and twirl of a dial would be great. But overall, it has been the best mirrorless I've used, and now for three years.

Fauxtaku Lounge As an M8 and M9-P user, I actually like the use of M mount lenses on the SL (better MF haptics than the focus-by-wire on my SL 24-90). I also love the adaptability of the SL: I moved over from the M to use MF tilt-shift and WA lenses without being held back by rangefinder frame-lines, and the L mount alliance will open the door to even wider varieties of glass than adaptable to M.
But you are of course right: the M and SL each have unique user experiences that set them apart. The M is purer and more nimble, the SL programmable and more adaptable. One keeps its link to Leica’s mechanical roots, the other is firmly pushing digital limits. Two different approaches to a FF platform. My point was that Leica will likely keep the SL format larger than the M, though the idea of a smaller format L mount camera intrigues me. Probably will never happen. The newer SL Summicrons are as compact as the glass will get given the decision to implement AF, weathersealing, and resolving power for higher MP sensors. With Leica touting the new SL Summicrons as a new benchmark in image quality beyond M glass, it will be interesting to see how the sensors of the M and SL continue to develop or diverge.
Head of Leica Camera Optics Peter Karbe said in the TvO interview: “ My thinking is that the SL system is just more for the photographer. An assistant for the photographer. The Leica M camera is a teacher.”
Keep up the great work on your YT channel!

I just ended up selling my SL to get the S1, Loving every bit of it. SL 24-90 works great, My Noctilux produces better files with S1 than SL ( I used to get some purple areas in shadows in low light on SL). Prefer the ergonomics of S1 and having physical buttons for certain things is better than menus and multi purpose buttons. IBIS is insanely good, handholding down to 6th of a sec is no problem. Only thing I miss from the SL is the cleaner and simpler menus, better joystick, and a more strudy feeling shutter release button. But cant complain when I ended up with a change of over a Grand.

You got a really good resale for the SL. Yeah, I wish the SL's long press buttons would make it to the S1. I'm thinking of replacing the GFX with an S1R, but we will see. I'm not totally happy with the GFX, but am not going to drop 10.000$ on the new 100MP version and the S1R's greater operating speed may really help.

@@FauxtakuLounge yeah, I looked at medium format systems and decided against them because of a few reasons, not being able to adapt my M mount lenses, shooting speed and convenience, file size. Might get S1r as a back up body later when the prices come down a bit.

Excellent observations ( LOVE the central magnification feature) - as an SL shooter I am looking forward to the SL2...tbh . I m hoping SL2 form factor is more like R9 or S series - ie more moulded to hands. Thanks for your efforts with this stuff.

All of these new cameras are objectively superior to the SL 601 but NONE of them and I mean NONE OF THEM come close to the SL when it comes to ergonomics, clean look, and simple. Lets not forget that meaty and weighty feel + build quality from the heavens. Only concern is the screen is fixed.
I tried out an S1 and that was soooo intimidating. The SL is much less so.
Performance wise, I wish the SL had IBIS because my hands are shaky. Thats all for me.

Yes, and it was available in 2002 or 3 from Sony's F50x series but neither was a FF camera. This is an important point to delineate and remember. Why oh why have makers divorced this wonderful function from their feature set since then (apart from Panasonic)?

I merely handled a new camera. I hadn’t the time nor the opportunity to put my expectations against anything but a ten minute exhibition.

    • @FauxtakuLounge
      @FauxtakuLounge  5 років тому +1

To your point, I’m impressed by the Panasonic. But Leica nail the ergonomics and thoughtfulness that only they can:
      - Sealed integrated battery with lock
      - infinity rotating shutter dial
      - deep pressing subbdial with good grip
      - diopter that’s easy to get to and adjust, labelled for stops
      - large buttons
      - perfectly sized AF-ON
      - DNG files
      - beautiful styling
No one touches any of that. But the SL2 needs serious tweaks to keep it on the top.

@@FauxtakuLounge Hehe I believe you prefer the SL over Panasonic :) there are many tests showing SL performance with M lenses I know it is 95% as good as M camera. Since you have the SL I have a question for you, with latest firmware when you magnify pressing joystick outside the center of the image take the picture and magnify again, does the camera remember the focus position or it resets the focus position to the center ?
Another question if you don't mind, how good is the SL's EVF in the outdoors in sunny conditions ? does it have enough bright ?

    Panasonic?
Made in China ohne Qualitätskontrolle und ohne jeglichen Kundenservice. Ich bekomme nun die Kamera unrepariert zurück und werde mein komplettes Panasonic Equipment wieder verkaufen. Habe sogar meine Vorbestellung der S1 inkl. 24-105 storniert. PANASONIC never again!!
