The Panasonic S1 arrived and threw me for a loop. Using manual focus M lenses and even Canon EF lenses it is delivering to me the most pleasing manual focus experience I have ever had the privilege to enjoy. On top of that, the best low light performance I have seen from any camera of this type. This S1 is amazing with its L mount as it allows us to use many lenses via adapters. Little jewel like lenses such as the Voigtlander 35 1.2 or 35 f2 are fantastic on this camera. The Canon 50 1.2 EF lens, amazing on this camera when using an adapter. The giant EVF makes it a breeze to focus. I bought one and it is replacing the Leica SL for me as it beats it in all ways besides design, and minimalistic menus.
My first look at the Panasonic S1 for shooting Leica M mount lenses and even Canon EF Lenses. This camera is amazing for low light shooting, and gives amazing quality in all areas from color to detail to dynamic range and high ISO capabilities. I have loved the Leica SL for shooting M lenses for four years but the S1 beats it for me for my use, very low light. I still love the SL though, and to me is now a classic. Here I take the S1 out to my usual locations to give it a low light workout. Also to see how it does with M lenses. Such a joy to shoot with manual focus due to the mastic 5.7 MP EVF which is improved over the SL EVF. I can eve MF with precision without blowing up the image. At less than half the cost of the SL, the S1 provides crazy good value. One of the best full frame cameras I have ever shot with for what I shoot. I also show here a quick "vlog" style test using the 24-105 Kit lens to see how the AF did, and it's much quicker than a GH5 ; ) Video tests here are right out of camera from 1080P 24 FPS all in basic auto mode. So how did you get the Canon lens on the S1? I was under the impression that the only EF to L adapter has not been released yet.
Larrin Baker It must be released you can rent it at lens rentals places. My question is does the adapter you are using give you AF?
I think Panasonic are doing the right thing. They have some high end full frame cameras to meet that low light demand but at the same time they have more compact micro four thirds gear for other needs.
Wow the color at ISO 6400 is beautiful. I never use ISO that high. That combined with great IBIS is going to open alot more shooting opportunity than my 5D IV

Have you shot with a 35 or wider?? Very curious about corner sharpness with a 35 and 21mm especially.

One of the most interesting releases in a while I think
I was @ B&H yesterday and i tried the S1 Lumix and compared the Lumix with Nikon , Canon , and Sony mirrorless camera , and i was fell in love by the build quality , huge EVF and the resolution in the EVF , color , and also the autofocus was actually very good considering this is their first FF camera and I assumed the AF is better than my Lumix G9. There’s also Sony users , and they tried the Lumix and compared with their Sony A73, they argued why Panasonic camera is so much bigger than their Sony camera ,or even with Canon and Nikon mirrorless to justified their feelings about the Lumix . I said ; I don’t know , maybe Panasonic don’t have the guilt to make bigger camera than others brands”.
What do you meant ? He asked me . I said ; “maybe Sony , Canon and Nikon feel ashamed if their new mirrorless have to be bigger than their DSLR or SLT 🤣🤣🤣🤣while for Panasonic this is their first full frame camera 😜😜😜

That Panasonic S1 seem to be a great camera for your use. The files that the camera produces seem very nice.
basically the S1 is the update to the SL at a cheaper price coz no Leica branding.
The S1 has better high ISO performance by about two stops. It's really quite impressive.
Now the SL has joined the PanaLeica (rebadged Panasonic). Hope they come out with the 24MP version SL2!

Definitely the most exciting camera to come out in my opinion since the original Leica Q, M10, and Leica SL. I’m super happy that it seems to do well with Leica M mount lenses which Fujifilm and Sonys tend to disappoint a little with adapted M glass. Are you using the Leica branded M mount adapter or a cheaper one? I’m curious if any of the lens corrections would be applied to the RAW (or JPG) to M glass because the SL will.
I too am eyeing this to adapt my M glass. Not sure if I should jump the gun and get one soon as available in Australia, or wait and see what the SL2 brings 😊

Canon Adapter is the Haoge EOS-T which I can't find anywhere.
Wow! I just did my 1st club shoot a few weeks ago. What I thought were good shots weren't. Some I thought were bad were fine. But man what a struggle it was. Good learning lesson though. You shots are great.
I agree if you are proficient with manual lenses the Panasonic's are the best camera a on the market ,,. For me a 2k Panasonic about the same size as a S5 with the all the features of s1 in 33-40 megapixels with improved autofocus and maybe Ieica a sticker would be an ideal camera.
Great vdo as always. I heard SL2 may be announced in June. Some even say SL2 would be a re-brand of Panasonic S1.

I hope when Leica refresh’s the SL they offer it in two versions 24 megapixels and 47 megapixels. I definitely prefer the Leica body and clean interface.

So the Leica SL is about 2000€ in Germany and the Panasonic S1 the same. I want to start shooting with manual lenses and need the evf as well as the IBIS.
I love the Leica body but comparing the quality of my files. It will be not a brainer to choose the S1 until I can afford the SL2

The only downside of the S1 is how heavy the body is ( a hair over 1000g). I'm a travel camera user. I'd get this in a heartbeat if it's +/- 650g.

How relevant in the a9 to the Lumix S1? I’m thinking that after two years of firmware updates, that the A9 still has the new S1 beat, though from afar I have fallen in love with the S1... sooo hard to choose, though the Sony has an AF that is spot on, & I see the S1 out of the gate is suffering...I think I just talked myself back into the a9... oh well...

Who cares. It doesn't mean S1 stop working. A7SII had MSRP of $3000. I certainly don't want to pay that much for a little better noise.

What do you recommend for stills with either Leica M or Leica R lenses. Im looking at the S1 (which I owned and loved) or the newer S5 variants. Street, Doc, Event and Studio. What do you think?
Sony and other mirrorless cameras suffer from "color-shifting" problem (when the back element of an M lens protrude into the camera too much, resulting in an extreme vignetting and shifted colors due to steep light falling angle). Typically with wide angle lenses.
To fix this, the SL uses micro lenses on its sensor to redirect the light at a right angle to the sensor.
Does S1 suffer from this issue or it also has a modified sensor?
At 9:15 how much post did you do to the 1080p looks great.
Put that Leica SL 50mm 1.4 on that S1 or an S1r.

Sigma MC-21 is coming out. Honestly since the S1 is out it should have released with it. However, currently it's not out.

How did you mount an EF lens on the S1 ? The only adapter currently available I know of is the Novoflex which costs around $650

Well, honestly the only difference is the fact the S1 is full frame. The S1 performs near as I can tell, just as well as Sony.
The Lumix S1 is a great camera, instead of The Leica SL
