I Love the Panasonic Lumix S1. It's my first choice of camera on all of my UA-cam, Weddings and Freelance projects. But, it does come with some limitations that is important to be aware of, if you're in the position of choosing whether the Lumix S1 is the right camera for you. And that's what this video is about!

The horizontally tilting screen is useful for two things: tripod mounted interviews, and low line vertical shooting. You can check interview framing with the camera on your left. A tilting screen lets you see it much more easily when shooting portrait orientation images from lower down.

You’ve done a nice job on the video with the script and shots but you’re pulling at straws a bit here I think. The S1 has been on sale for 2.5 years now and I think most users know what to expect at this stage. It has better colour than Canons mirrorless cameras and dynamic range is great. I love using mine still since I got it in March 2019. The last upgrade was amazing.

You're absolutely right, its a great camera. The things that I talk about are actually brought up from seeing conversations of people that have been unaware of, in Facebook groups dedicated to the L series range of cameras, so whilst they're not necessarily purely negatives, I hope the video instead clears up some confusion of what features do/do not appear in the S1 in comparison to the others 🤞

I love the S1, after the recent firmware updates and future announced update it is the best bang for buck camera on the market particularly for filmmakers on a tight budget. I prefer it to my S5 but I'm not a vlogger so the flip outscored doesn't phase me

Thanks for doing this video, you present wonderfully, however I’d say the NO1 reason to buy the S1 (apart from the fact it’s a brilliant camera) is the fact that it has the tilt screen and not the now ubiquitous side hinged flip out screen.
To use the screen on a side hinged LCD camera, I have to use my left hand, find the groove, pull out, twist, re-align then look to the left of my lens as the camera points straight ahead, then to put it back in I have to do all the same again... aaand repeat. But if I want the option of continuing to have a low angle or high angle I need to leave the screen out which is obtrusive and conspicuous nearly doubling the width of the camera. A side hinged screen is for two things only, shooting around corners and shooting yourself. The tilt is so much faster, unobtrusive and convenient, flick of a finger and it’s in and out. I understand why people think they want a side hinged but camera manufacturers now seem obsessed with only offering them (LUMIX S5/Sony A7S3/Fujifilm X-T4 and all the Canons) it’s a worrying trend now that seems driven by UA-camrs moaning about not having a side hinged screen as all they go on about is being able to see themselves.
After shooting 300+ weddings I’ve never needed to shoot myself ever professionally.
    Thanks.

I have and love the S1, I love the screen on it, but the history of built in articulating screens on professional video cameras begins and ends with side hinge. If I am shooting a two angle interview, and I'm setting to the left of my B cam, I can't flip the S1 screen out to face me. This has been a pain on more than one shoot, and I don't always want to use a monitor to gain the ability to keep tabs on whether the camera is still rolling, running low on batteries, still good on focus peaking, etc.
That's why the S1H and it's tilting side mounted flip screen was such a brilliant idea. It appeases both crowds as best as possible.

@@4th_Lensman_of_the_apocalypse You're just missing the point I'm trying to make. A camera can either do something or it can't. I'm simply outlining a scenario where it's extremely useful to have a fully articulating screen. And frankly, there are tons of situations where I don't like being weighed down with a monitor, especially on a mirrorless body where it make the weight distribution all vertical. I would always prefer a camera that offers me the opportunity to not have to rig it up for basic functions.

I don't think that audio with high framerate makes any sense, it's such a hassle to unlink the video in post and change the speed of the audio or align with video you might as well make a quick clip or add sounds in post. Also mostly slow-mo shot's are b-roll so the sound will come from a roll or sounddesign.

That third axis is for low (or high) shots in the portrait orientation. How is that not useful? I use this quite often on my X-H1. I don’t shoot video nor do I blog with my mirrorless bodies so not everybody prefers the flip-out fully-articulating screen. For portraits the screen is absolutely great, for that exact reason. It has since come in handy for when im shooting social content (9x16), but I think for any traditional on-the-go filmmaking, a flip out screen would always be most popular 🙂

The only thing that bothers me is the absence of a flip-out screen. I have actually decided to go in for the s5 instead, because of this. Hopefully, we may receive firmware updates in the future that will improve the AF drastically; fingers crossed.

I'm torn between this, S1 and the newly announced X-H2s

    • @jacobh5817
      @jacobh5817 Рік тому +1

I guess that depends heavily on what you plan to use it for and which lenses you plan to buy. If it’s mostly a video camera for you and you prefer AF with your videos, don’t hesitate and buy the H2s. Just be careful which lenses you use, since the majority of XF lenses ‘suck’ at video. The new 18-120, the 16-55 and 16-80 are decent to good for video. Of course Fuji has some excellent, but expensive, cine lenses. When you use the camera for stills and esp. in available/low light, the S1 delivers superior images even compared to the new H2s. From iso3200 onwards it is producing a much cleaner image with its bigger sensor with lower resolution. Files are also easier to color grade. When you plan to use the camera as part of a big rig with an external recorder, external xlr connector and mics and a focus pull mech. definitely buy the S1. The MF of Fuji is crap. We’ve had quite a few Fuji cameras here in the studio (incl. the H2s for a trial run) and they’re really nice with good IQ, but we’ve also experienced way more reliability issues than with any other brand we use. The S1/R/H are truly professional grade here. The only downside of Lumix is AF-C which is less reliable than Canon, Sony and Nikon and a bit at the level of previous Fuji cameras such as the H1 and T2. AF-S mode is perfect and tracking is decent. Finally, you can buy a mint condition pre-owned S1 for less than half of the price of a H2s.

I've just bought a GH5 and adore it in every aspect, except for low light. This is why I might possibly get an S1, if the price is right. I didn't know that this camera wouldn't have an articulating screen, just expected it when coming from the GH5.

Perhaps the S5 would be a decent upgrade if you're mostly after the lowlight aspect? Also due to that having the flip LCD in comparison to the S1. They also have a few good cashback offers on at the moment in some countries 👍

S5 owner here. Low light is incredible. ISO 6400 with no problems. Could probably go higher if necessary.

@@JordanLeeVideo the mini hdmi port of the S5 WILL fail eventually, it's not reliable, it was used to keep the size of the camera down to attract gh5 users looking to upgrade to FF.
Panasonic dont use mini hdmi on their pro camera range.
