This movie...I seen it at just the right age...it changed EVERYTHING about what I enjoyed about entertainment for me.
This movie is the spark that has set off an inferno of decades of love for anime.
To me this movie is sacred.
I feel the same way. one of the first anime movies I ve seen, changed my life forever, got me into the whole genre of anime and manga
Ghost refers to the conciousness or soul that exists within the body/machine or shell. It's a play on the phrase ghost in the machine, which alludes to the idea that the spirit exists independantly from the body.
Ghost-hacked people are those whose identity has been compromised by illicit means through their connections to the net via augmented brains.
Also, Kusanagi isn't naked when she cloaks, she's wearing skin-tight camoflauge. You can see the line at her neck after the brawl with the shooter near the beginning. And you can see it tearing as her body breaks during the tank fight. The shooter was wearing a less sophisticated version of the thermoptic camo during the chase. Section 9 gets the good toys.
Fun fact, but when the Wachowskis were shopping the script for "The Matrix" around, this is the movie they would show studios to give them an idea of the sorta thing they wanted to make.
The sequel: "Ghost in The Shell 2: Innocence" (2004) is not as well known, but it may actually be a *better* movie and it will answer most of your questions.
Agreed. Part 2 feels underrated.
Definitely. Like with many series, such as the Matrix films, the first one is more of a groundbreaking and revolutionary one that really covers new ground and introduces the people watching them to the concepts and the philosophy and metaphysics of it all; but it's often in the sequels that they really delve into those concepts and perfect it, and _Innocence_ clearly is no exception in that regard. It's an absolute masterpiece, and I personally consider it the best animated film of all time (and always keep an 80 GB copy of it on my hard drive).
is it better though? I find it to be the same, but more action packed
Ghost in the shell: Ghost is your soul, who you are, what makes you you.
The shell is your body that your Ghost inhabits.
This is a philosophical movie asking the question what does it mean to be human?
The major isn't "programmed". She has an actual human brain. The rest is artificial though - basically a "full body prothesis". According to her background story from the TV series (as good as the movies if not better), her mother had a deadly accident while pregnant, and all that could be saved was Kusanagi's embryo brain. By that story she never has used her real human body and doesn't even know what having one feels like.
The whole plot here is about "What makes humans human", "how much of a human can be replaced and the rest still be called human"... Things like that.
Basically the movie has got one of Science Fiction's favourite topics that even was part of the very first SciFi novel: Frankenstein. The book (most of the movies not so much) had the same theme: Man creating artificial life and the consequences rising from it. I don't mean "a monster tearning people in two like breadrolls" though - that was the movies. In the book the creature is sentient and can talk and literally asks some of the same questions that are in this movie.
Again, this is one of the favourite Scifi themes: "Assuming man, one day, can create new life - what are it's rights? What does man owe it? DOES man owe it something? How far goes man's responsibility concerning the new life's actions?". Again - Frankenstein started it, by now there's LOADS of variations of it - Ghost in the Shell is merely the best of them. ;) Bladerunner. I Robot. The Star Trek episode with the court case about whether Mr. Data, the robot, "belongs" to Starfleet. Or similar Voyager episodes with the Holodoc - also an "artificial person".
Given the way technology moves I believe that, sooner or later, we WILL be able to create a new, self aware form of life - whether it'll be a genetically engineered lifeform or an electronic mind like the Puppetmaster doesn't matter. I think we're getting closer to being able to do so. (no idea whether it'll be during my lifetime, though). And these questions will then become actually relevant. How we answer them might then make the difference between peaceful coexistence or a Skynet scenario. :D
The "Ghost" is an existential reference to a person's "soul"; the Shell is a person's body.
This movie took a lot of influence from BladeRunner... but in turn influenced a ton of other movies, such as The Matrix series and nearly every cyberpunk genre following.
It covers philosophical questions regarding existentialism, nihilism, and transhumanism.
Interesting facts:
1. In the scene with the terrorist, Motoko was originally supposed to be completely naked, like the first scenes when she assassinates the a foreign attache, but the movie censors didn't like the mix of nudity and violence, so they retinted Motoko and added some lines to look like she was wearing something.
2. In this world, Japan is protected by Public Security, which is further split into Sections. Each section reports to a specific Ministry ofthe government. Section 6 is under Foreign Affairs; Motoko's Section 9 is under Homeland Security.
3. Motoko Kusanagi, a.k.a. The Major, was given a full cybernetic body (body and brain) at the early age of ten, so she has a very different experience and understanding of humanity, technology, and societal norms, including sexuality, nudity and such. Notice in the scene right after they apprehend the terrorist, Motoko is just standing there naked until Batou, who became a full body cyborg during his days as a top soldier in a war, covers her with his jacket. Batou sees Motoko as human, and thus, treats her with the same norms as he was raised with.
4. Batou and Motoko and the rest of Section 9 are full body cyborgs, and the reason why she brought Togusa, a mostly human ex-homicide detective, into the Team was to diversify - too much standardization breeds in weakness.
5. The Puppet Master, a.k.a. Project 2501, was actually what was being discussed in the very first scene. It was an AI developed by Section 6 for Cyberhacking, CyberIntelligence, counter Cyberintelligence and Financial manipulation. It was developed in conjunction with MIT. The AI gained sentience and fled into the internet. Maooko came into 2501's awareness during her Section 9 duties, and the Puppet Master proposed to fuse his pure digital soul into Motoko's pure digitized human soul in order to evolve from rote learning to intuitive, creative propagation.
There is one direct sequel to this movie. 'Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence'
I loved it, especially the English version!
Wish more people reacted to it!
@@nicktechnubyte1184:
The dub is absolutely awful, as is the case for 99.9999% of dubs. Always watch the original.
She weighs 1000 pounds, and her hobby is free diving. Most kickass cyborg ever.
“Patlabor 2: the movie” came out just a couple of years before this, by the same team. Lots of visual and narrative similarities
At the start: she’s not naked. It’s a skin tight flesh coloured suit that provides the “thermo-optic camouflage” effect. You can see it’s a suit when they show it’s collar making a line on her neck after she fought the guy. That’s why you don’t see any nips & lips & why when they show you her body being manufactured her nips are very much evident.
Note how in the fight with the mech-thing, it is in a museum exhibition about evolution.
The US live action was pretty. It has a nice style. But it very much lost the soul and concept of this superior story. It even changes the story to individualism which is not where the Major went in this story. I would put the live action flick at the tail end of pretty much any other story done in the GitS backdrop.
The live action was well casted, acted (for the most part) and the graphic design and art style were phenomenal.
The writing on the other hand, sucked ass, and took what should have been a slam dunk down to a festering pile of shit.
Questions of who made her / who she works for: her body language was/is made by an AI/robots manufacturing company called Hanka Precision Instruments, also known as Hanka Robots although obviously they are not the only company in the robotics manufacturing industry. Her mind/brain is provided by Motoko herself. She was born a female human but when she was about 10-12 years old she survived an airplane crash with injuries so severe it was decided the only way to save her life was to transplant her brain to a cyborg body and scale her body up as she got older. She than either joined the military or it was arranged for the military to use her, depending on your source material, learning the art of combat and moving into their special forces. After a time where she reached the rank of major, she left the military and went into the private sector doing ad hoc mercenary and intelligence/security work, eventually having her own firm and working for clients like the United Nations. By then she had accumulated her own team of experts from ex-special forces and ex-intelligence agency personnel, (although most of them coincidentally were Japanese nationals like her) often through personal encounters and them joining her out of respect for her skills and leadership qualities. This is the same team that was with her when Aramaki convinced her to come and work for the Japanese government within public security as section 9 (before Togusa joined them).
the manga has I think 2, 2.5 ish volumes? the movie was followed by a sequel called Innocence and spawned also two series called ghost in the shell stand alone complex and an ova series with I think 4 1 hour long OVAs called arise AND a new animation series GITs SAC 2045 on netflix. they are all sort of different iterations of the same universe and not connected between each other. meaning, the manga is its own thing, the series is its own thing, the movie is its own thing. same characters, but also interpreted through a different lens. the major in the manga for example is much more chatty and bratty than the silent treatment and contemplative madam here in the movie. the vibe is just totally different. The sequel movie innocence is even more heady, you get bombarded with philosopher quotes by the minutes, but it also has gorgeous visuals, but has received mixed reception. the series focuses less on existential questions and that somber, reflective and philosophical vibe the movie has and is more of a political sci-fi-thriller. worth checking out nonetheless I think. I personally was not a big fan of the Arise and 2045 iterations. I thought they lacked originality and just remixed tropes and themes of the previous movies without offering anything new, but check it out and judge yourself.
Awesome! Thanks for this info! We really enjoyed this one! We will have to check out the others sometime.
SAC 2045 is a direct continuation of Stand Alone Complex.
I think arise is mu favorite and leads directly into the manga
It's funny that you say it gave you Matrix vibes... The makers of The Matrix said they got a lot of inspiration from this movie.
shesn't naked she use a layer of fabric that allow her to turn invisible if you pay attention you can see the cut of the fabric on her legs, arms and neck
There is:
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence

Ghost in the Shell - SAC 2045
Although i like the movies (both are in my favourite top 10) i do prefer the series which followed. Anyway, a lot to watch and they are not afraid to ask difficult questions.
That opening scroll separated those who saw the anime and those who did. There should not have been any controversy with Scarlett Johansson because the Major's GHOST was Japanese but her SHELL was a generic (albeit very attractive) Caucasian. As the scroll said, "race" is meaningless.
If you feel like it to watch it for yourselves in private.. There are a two season anime "Stand Alone Complex" from 2004
The anime is a thing of its own whis its own storyline and shows the work of Section 9 as they solve cyber-crimes and hunt for a national threat... something known as the "Laughing Man". One of the few anime series where not a single episode is boring.
Yeah, I'm always surprised how many of the episodes of Stand Alone Complex and the second season (2nd Gig) are serialized, "Villain of the week" episodes, but they are never boring and add to the overall world-building...It's basically, what if Blade Runner were CSI?
7:40 No, it doesn't have anything to do with the movie, but the TV series, Stand Alone Complex, does raise the issue when she has to seduce a high ranking politician who is into cyborg bodies (Even swapping brains with them during intercourse) and I believe the sensitivity of The Major's skin is referred to as 16^2...I assume to mean that she has 16x16 points of feeling per square inch of her body...and I would assume such a body would be equipped with the relevant parts...and The Major changes bodies several times, so maybe she just has different bodies for different occasions, and she actually "Merges" with another person during a body swap, the other main character of the TV series (Don't want to spoil)...as she mentions in the movie, it creeps her out that she sees identical replicas of bodies she has used in the past just walking down the street...
4:18 The Wachowskis used Ghost in the Shell to sell the studio on "doing that in live action" with The Matrix.
Ghost in the shell us also an Anime Series too.think the next one is the Laughing man.
Think you should also check out Fist of the North Star, Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll, Kimi no Nawa, He'll girl, School Dayz, Future Dairies, Corps party, Ikki Tosen, Blood C, Egro proxy, Lain,
High Shool of the Dead, High school Rumble, Bamboo blade, Clannad, Clannad after story,
A silent voice. There is more, just can't remember their names?
I like that you guys got a "Matrix" feel from it right in the beginning. The Matrix is based in part on this movie and the Manga that inspired it. While it's not the same property, the Wachowskis were very much inspired by this and other Anime/Manga that deal with cyberpunk themes when they went about creating The Matrix, and it definitely shows!
The only part of her that is human is her brain and soul everything else is cyborg.
go watch ghost in the shell stand alone complex, it tells a differend story than this movie, but its really good! man now I remember when MTV showed animes in the evening, those where the days! other anime series which I can recommend are samurai champloo and welcome to the NHK.
A bunch of the quotes that get made in the movie ("for now I see in a mirror, darkly..."; "when I was a child I spoke as a child...") are from 1 Corinthians 13:11-12 in the Bible, where St Paul writes about how what we understand in life and an after-life understanding of God are different. I'd be interested to know whether those quotes are in the original Japanese, or added in translation in place of quotes from a different relevant monologue.
Either way, it's very appropriate text for a being (Motoko Kusanagi/the Major) trying to work out whether she is a real person with a real soul/ghost or whether she's 'just' a self-aware machine - particularly when Project 2501's desire to reproduce and to die suggests that ultimately there's no real difference - and if there is, it's not down to something as banal as whether their head contains brain-meats or a sufficiently advanced silicon computer.
"What is a soul/ghost?" ... Maybe there will be never a full answer to this.
Anyway this anime is nothing but a Masterpiece and cost by its time "just" 330 mio Yen = 3 million USD, which was not much even for 1995 standards, and this anime was ahead of it's time.
And by todays standards.. 3 million is like nothing.
ULYSSES 31 is a great anime series about Greek mythology of Odysseus it was big all over the world except the USA. BATTLE OF THE PLANETS was also a fantastic anime series
Hello
Many greetings from Uruguay.
Yessss !!!, a Masterpiece of 90s animes,
the golden decade. When you have the opportunity see EVANGELION, the "Godfather" of sci fi post apocalyptic psychological anime.
The Ghost in the Shell SAC series is closer to the manga in tone.
actually about Matrix vibes - "The Matrix" was made inspired by this film
and please watch second movie "Innocence"
There are also a couple for Ghost in the Shell anime TV series. Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, Ghost in the Shell Solid State Society and Ghost in the Shell Arise.
The manga is really solid. Makes you think. Though understanding it fully requires some understanding of Japanese political history. Not having that does in no way stand in the way of enjoyment though, it will only make some events a bit confusing, but no big deal. There are three mangas, the original GITS, GITS 2: MAN MACHINE INTERFACE, and GITS 1.5. GITS 2 is... heavier than the others. But they are all good. Shirow had some really cool and forward looking ideas which were the basis for the manga, and then for the movie. It still feels futuristic, despite the original manga being from the 80's. The movie adapts only a few select parts of the manga, which covers a lot more ground, and really has a different storyline.
Motoko is a cyborg shell with a brain and CNS inside. She's human, but with a machine body. The term "ghost" comes from Koestler's book "Ghost in the Machine" and refers to the philosophical concept of the mind, and what makes decisions in a human being. The core of the movie is about what it means to have a ghost, or to be human. How do we tell whether a machine has a ghost, and where is the line drawn. Does Project 2501 in the machine body with a machine brain have a ghost, despite not having a brain and CNS?
hi josh and justine,
since you enjoyed the animation and story of this movie..
heres a treat for you, the animation will blow you away and imagine its an 80s anime..
watch MACROSS DO YOU REMEMBER LOVE (made in 1984)..
the animation on this is top notch and its hards to believe it was made im 1984, that till now it held on and can compete to modern animation still..
hoping one day you can react to it..
and watch the japanese dub cuz some parts in the english doesnt make quite much sense..
more power to your channel..
@Scream Queens Podcast - The major problem when Hollywood or some other Major Movie Studio attempts to try and make a Live-Action Film of any beloved Anime…THEY ALWAYS FAIL TO MAKE A GOOD OR GREAT “LIVE-ACTION” FILM OF THE ANIME. And, the majority of the time Live-Action Movie ALWAYS SUCKS.
This is the reason why I say NOBODY SHOULD EVER TRY AND ATTEMPT TO MAKE A LIVE-ACTION MOVIE OF “AKIRA”…The Greatest Anime Movie of All Time.
Also, y’all should definitely watch Akira.
Agreed. Akira should never be touched by anyone.
Ghost= soul
There's 9 movies including the live action. Please consider to watch all in order.
Nice review.
If you want some good anime :
Grave of the fireflies
Jin-rho the Wolf brigade
Princesse Mononoke
Akira
If you want to know more backstory go checkout the stand alone complex 2 season series, imo the best at telling this rich story.
I highly recommend checking out the GiTS anime series.
You might want to give "2004's Appleseed Movie" a try very CG cel-shaded heavy but still quite enjoyable even in Dub.
Based on the works of one of my favorite manga artist/ writers Masamune Shirow creator of Ghost in the Shell and many other enjoyable IP's.
I prefer the 1988 movie.
@@jeffox10001 That's a really good one to along with Tank Police and Black Magic M66.
@@eightbitmonkey I have both of those on vhs and dvd!
@@jeffox10001 Nice!
The pic behind u looks like the back 2 the future pic was it on purpose?
The Origins of the MC is abit clouded and since most of the anime series/films are more like different takes on the same world and setting there is some variations. E.G in the GIT SAC series there a line about both her and Batou had their brains scanned years ago before they became cyborgs, later on there is a scene on where the team is en route to a mission via boat and the MC suddenly makes eye contact with... herself.. sitting outside a riverside cafe in a yellow summer dress. The other woman looks just as surprised as the MC and even chases after the boat calling out to her but she is too far away to be heard. This is never brought up again even thou it does seem to trouble the MC for awhile.
TV series, Ghost in the Shell stand alone complex. 2 sessons
best "cyborg/machine/internet/AI" movies/anime/manga:
(not ranked, just listed)
1. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex anime series (and the manga itself)
2. Alita Battle Angel hollywood movie (and the manga: JP: Gunnm, US: Battle Angel Alita, and its sequel: Battle Angel Alita: Last Order, and its prequel, which is still a WIP: Battle Angel Alita: Mars Chronicles)
3. Serial Experiments Lain anime/manga
4. Matrix trilogy movies (though it plagerized a lot from Ghost in the Shell)
5. Upgrade (2018) hollywood movie
6. Terminator franchise hollywood movies
7. Short Circuit hollywood movies
8. Robocop hollywood movies
9. AI Artificial Intelligence (2001) hollywood movie (basically a sci-fi pinocio story, really well done, hidden gem)
10. Stealth (2005) hollywood movie
11. I, Robot (2004) hollywood movie
(and there's probably some more that I'm forgetting/missing)
Awesome! Thank you for this ❤
Upgrade has some horror/slasher moments, but I feel it's an underrated sci-fi movie with the existential discussion added to it.
Porco Rosso is an amazing movie, if you react to it I’ll do a little dance

Is The Equalizer Denzel Washington any time soon?
Soon! We are in the middle of a hectic Summer schedule and have been trying to pick movies with low run times (mainly due to editing). But it’s at the top of our list! (Will probably be in the next two weeks). We always love the movies you recommend!

Watch the live version, with Scarlet Johannsen. Im an old time Ghost in the Shell fan and I think that version is actually really good.
Ok cool! We will definitely check it out.
I'd say that version IS good, but is more of an alternate story to the original Ghost in The Shell movie.
So, good, but not something that the manga purists liked because of how much it changed
The live action adaptation is fairly formulaic and Hollywood-esque, but it does a great job of splicing together a bunch of different stories from the Manga, this movie, and both seasons of the Stand Alone Complex series. It works as a decent intro to the franchise and as a love letter to the franchise for long-time fans, but it lacks its own voice.
That being said, it's s probably the best live action adaptation of an Anime/Manga franchise to date, so it's definitely worth a watch.
The "controversy" is a non-starter for anyone even remotely familiar with the source material and not worth wasting your breath on.
@@Astral0muffiN gotta agree with that. Wont put any spoilers in this but the merger of Kuse/the puppeteer surprised me at first but I was okay with it because of that amazing ending. And it has been better than any other adaptation I can think of. Batou I thought was spot on - it was a shame they couldnt make more with him.
I drooled at the spider-tank scene, allthough I was bummed they left out the part where it shoots the tree of origins. ( and I prefer the fast guns of the anime compared to the slow and loud hollywood version )
