Dr. Manhattan :)
hehe..He is really “Quicksilver” from X- Men and can stop time ..🤔
This kid will be recognised as one of the Prog rock greats
3:30 is omg. I'm running out of compliments for this guy. All that hi hat pedal work on the up beat while all the rest of this madness is going on? Seriously? Raw talent in it's purest form. Guys legendary status and has years of development left. These charts would look scary af
Arghhhh it's so nice to finally see someone bring this idea to fruition. I've thought about it for years but it'd be soooooo annoying to navigate every other note around the pedal hat playing it that way.. I'm too lazy to learn to play the pedal hat off the beat like that:(
Yeah the drummer from TesseracT, Jay Postones, uses it a lot as well. Pretty sweet.
That's actually a pretty common thing to do for drummers, and it's not insanely difficult. What's really unique about his arrangements in this song is the 3 to 4 polyrhythm and also the dynamics control, those ghost notes and floor tom flams are insane.
Regardless, I am also in love with him.
Complex
What is the time signature of this?
Baard: "Yes"
What's the most overused comment on youtube?
You:
17/16 in case you were wondering
I've been listening to Leprous for awhile and Baard is one of my favorite drummers, but only recently have I noticed some similarities to Gavin Harrison. In the sense that he's got the ability to be a power drummer and a finesse drummer at the same time with a really fresh fusion style. Impeccable timing and stick control too
Been thinking this too!
The groovy final part caught me by surprise when hearing the record
RIGHT? Everyone on my commute home probably knows me as "that guy blasting this album while singing his heart out."
5:27 That bass solo tho!
and that drop!
that is not a drop for fuck's sake...
Nor is that a bass solo (more like a melody), but it is awesome.
Don't know how many drummers can actually do this. It's literally genius. This is just not normal.
But what's also impressive is that it works as a song. Lovely stuff

Encaspulating, vivid, brilliant performance from every member involved in the creation of Malina.
Edit: Every time I hear 3:30 I am reminded that Leprous is one of the most prolific bands of the genre right now. I am absolutely in love.
Even 100 years after I am buried I won't be able to get this song out of my mind. Ain't even mad.
Freezing Moon same
This guy takes songs that sound like they should have a simple beat and makes them so utterly fascinating. I'm endlessly amazed by him.
I've been waiting for this!! He plays with so much energy. Every time I watch him play it makes me want to play
that's so true!
Air drumming FTW 🤟🏼
He does, I love drummers that play with that much energy. The former drummer from Candiria, Kenneth Schalk drums very similar.
just do it
Same, until I try, then I go back to remembering that I used to play drums
I'm speechless. How, I ask, how is this even possible?
This is fire. The 9/8 heavy grooves made me miss the "1" count so many times before i got used to it :)
17/8 but I guess I see where you're coming from
@@oscargill423 i`m "just" a guitarist :), I try to count every measure separately to figure out whats going on, but so many cool things in the drumming just throw me off, the triplet feel in the intro, or the mix of even and odd meters. it does make sense to count most of the song as 8/8+9/8=17/8 so the pattern repeats, thanks for clarifying. I now break it to groups of 4/4/4/5 which make it a bit easier for me to count in real time. but yah , this song is above my pay-grade for sure xD
@@sinkler123 It's certainly like that sometimes (referring to the drums throwing you off), props for managing to figure out an effective way to count it despite that! I count in a similar way.
@@sinkler123 the easiest way to count odd meters is using groups of 2 and 3
That energy is amazing! That floor tom next to the snare is such an amazing addition, really gives the drumming a super nice extra bass sound.
I love the fact that his ride (which he wantonly uses as a crash to great effect) is broken. It is cracked around the bell and has a chunk removed out of the side. And yet it sounds fantastic...is that some trickery in the control booth, or are we all too conditioned to want that sweet ride sounds from a Zildjian K so that we forget that as drummers, we can hit anything we like in time?
Can’t stop listening to this song, every time I listen, I love it even more.
Definitely best on the album. Phenomenal work.
I'm in prison right now, unfairly accused and waiting for trial. There are no words to explain the level of all kinds of deprivation imprisoned people lives in. Having a moment to listen to this is a tiny little reminder that I am still myself and I won't be defeated so easily.
vilken enastående trummis det är ett privilegium att få höra vad han spelar och att försöka hänga med, fortsätt rocka mannen
Baard and Eloy. These guys are the pinnacle of modern metal drumming right now.

Love the heaviness and energy of this song and the concept of shifting snare and bass drum hits by triplets!
My entire mood changed while watching this. Inspiration is such a powerful thing.
Man Baard's grooves are so inspiring
5:25 That outro is my favourite section of the album. Can't get enough
I just can't get enough of this song!
great job!
so clean and effortless
amazing as always!!!!!
I've been waiting for this video for 3 months at least... WOOOOW
Need to give this album so much more ear time. Brilliant as always.
Brilliant as always! Loved your drumming on "Currents" as well :D
Wow! Like always you impressed me with that tricky rhythmic odd time signature! Beautiful piece of music!
I enjoy watching this so much. As a fellow drummer, this really speaks to me :D Very interesting drum parts and such a great song.
My favourite of the album Malina. Awesome, as always, Baard!!
Awesome sound, awesome playing :) . You are a genius!
What an awesome song and band! One of my favourite tracks for sure.
beautiful!
massive snare sound... amazing. those flams explode!
Thank's Baard your work on Drum's have alway's. Been Iconic very much Respect to you:-).
Totally outstanding!
Mm, that outro fill gets me ever time
holy shit ! just yesterday i discovered the band and the drumvids of Baard! thank you very much my friend i love all of them.
Incredible musician, incredible band
He just cannot be quiet ha! Fabulous, unique and talented. Such a pleasure to watch.
Can't help but get inspired by Baard. Have to go straight to my kit after typing this and play this song.. and the rest of the album! I just start smiling when i play his stuff, it's too much fun and so good!
A beautiful display of artistry and musicianship.
Excelente Baard Kolstad; fenomenal música la de Leprous.
also respect for pretty much nailing the song
these rythms play with my head way too much
This is one of the best things I've ever heard
Without even breaking a damn sweat. No matter what I do, I keep coming back to this video
what a bloody drummer .... !!! love him ...
This is probably my favourite Leprous song. This man is insane!
Madman!
I love it!
Pure focus drumming good job.....
I have found this guy few days ago, and I'm literally watching EVERY of his playthrough there is on YT. WOW. Pozdro666
Dude I love that transition @3:32, it's so killer!!
I especially love this song in this album, and its because of Baard.
Baard Kolstad, супер!!!
Постоянно слушаем!
спс
Wowww // total soulful song & playing!!!!!!
One of my favorite drummer actually
Perfect job! Thank you!
Absolutelly mind blowing!
Good drum kit! But the grandmother's carpet under it is priceless!
Хорошая ударная установка, но бабушкин коврик под ней - бесценен! :)
I thought the same first time I saw such a carpet underneath a drumkit and seeing them more often made me wonder if it had a special quality to it, as it appears here yet again :p
You guys do realise it’s so the kit doesn’t slide around when he’s playing it?
No matter how many times I watch this, it just blows me away! The way he plays with time. The absolute precision of execution. I just bought a Roland V-drum kit to add to my Tama Rockstars(just for bells and whistles) but this is the first song I will learn and there’s no bells or whistles. Just some of the all-out, most jamminest rock and roll drums ever recorded.
Malina really grew on me over time, at first I was disappointed but by now I'd consider it to be one of their best records, just with a different approach. Though the drumming on The Congregation was more interesting and.. ridiculous
Can't have progressive without progressing, eh?
The drumming is at the same level, maybe even better.
I wasn't exactly disappointed. I definitely prefer their work like The Congregation, but this song and others are the reason why I welcome their other albums. At least Leprous doesn't use the excuse of "bands have to evolve" to become into mainstream sound ( *cough* Coldplay)
Malina grew on me like a malignant tumor. It's a tie between Malina and Bilateral for their best album.
Amazing!
absoulute mad lad!
My favorite track on the record !
I've watched this so many times.
I guess I have to check out this band Leprous now.
would love to hear that what that phone microphone sounds like Solo'd AMAZING WORK! AMAZING PLAYING!
this should be the mix on the CD :)
This is so Good!
Can a sound engineer explain what that red land line phone adds to the mic mix? I'm assuming it's being recorded on the other end?
Amazing music and drumming! That Pearl Reference kit is just insane!
I believe engineers use it to capture the resonate snare head better. No idea why though
it brings filth. no, really. really really really strange mics have very limited capacity, but also a signature tone a standard mic cannot provide.
check out sylvia massey
Terrific!
love this one, such weird rhythm
Super cool and great drumming Baard. Can you also play Illuminate please..? Would be great! Keep up the good work.. im big fan!!
Love it... LOVE IT!!
my favorite song of all time
Those ghost notes are the crux of all of it, friggen righteous.
Beautiful
Awesome!
AWESOME!
That telephone used as a microphone technique is amazing!
Have one lying around I rewired myself to an XLR.
I used it on vocals for special effects, now I gotta try this on drums.
Raphaël Doursenaud not sure if joking or serious. I can't hear it, in case you're serious.
I'm pretty sure it's not used in this track but the placement is sensible for a natural full kit low-fi sound.
Will need to check the album ;)
Leprous doesn't do the lo-fi thing, aside from older moments where Einar did some Opeth telephone vocals...fortunately the only time they ever did that. Glad to hear the full definition of this man's amazing kit.
Sound oft the snare is amaaaazing
this is good stuff
Amazing
Inspiring!!
This reminds me of so many bands I can't even name them all.
Just brilliant! Is it possible to play without click?
MASTER!!!!! :-) JUST AMAZING!!! :-)
killin it!!
The next one must be Captive!
That energy 😊
Where can I see the score? I want to see what he is playing! OMG! Great job!
Just holy shit. He's shockingly good live...
Perfect!!!
cream of the crop fantastic!!!
Love the 17s in this, and Pixel too.
Evan Easton he's count 17/4 right bro ?
17/8
@@LoggR84 This is driving me up a wall. Can you pick out any groupings? I can count most of it in a full 17 but having a hard time figuring out his kick and snare timing.
