Conor, thanks for sharing this great profile review of the different personalities you need for a high-performing startup! I can clearly understand the need for all these personalities to be represented. In your experience, ideally, how many people should be represented here? 1:1 (8 people) or 4:1 (2 people) or somewhere in the middle? I'm guessing it depends on the organization size? Are there ones that are "must have" for the company to really get started? Secondly, have you seen a sequence of roles that allow an organization to grow most effectively? Finally, can a company start with a 'Warren Buffet' or a 'Richard Branson' (or other non-visionary, non-mechanic role?)
I'd say you need the first 4 profiles in order to get started... visionary fo the idea and the ability to get the others to believe that it is worth working towards; mechanic to build the prototype... and the first product... and the improvements; Richard Branson to create demand; Networker to close sales... this is the minimum team necessary to get started. The Banker, Warren Buffett, Manager roles have no place in a very early stage startup... but will come in as growth starts to happen... the Baron is not necessary until 70+ employees, and can often be a board member or senior executive put in by the investor group.
Thank you for sharing this framework. The best part I liked how we can use this to identify which areas we are good and where we need folks to fill the gap and build a dream team.
Exactly... we cannot be strong in all areas. In fact, if you don't have some big weaknesses, you probably don't really have outstanding strengths - you cannot be a truly great marketer/networker and be a good banker/Warren Buffett - these styles are just not compatible in one person...
I have seen many conflicts in industries and business in above mentioned functions. Most of the e functions considers they are most important than any other function. This is great illustration to understand how the business works as a whole. Thanks for sharing.👍
Conflict is a wonderful sign of a great team - if the networker is not fighting with the banker then at least one of them is not playing their role... the Warren Buffett and the Visionary often are in conflict... the marketer and the mechanic are often in conflict...
Great... Thanks a lot sir, you have won me as a subcriber to your channel. This is the exact information I have been looking for. I have an Idea which I want to implement in my business but i have been faced by the chalenge of if I should learn a skill in the mechanic aspect since i don't have an insight of how it should be settup. From what I have learnt today I think getting a mechanic to assist me bring my Idea into reality is what will enable my business propel to the next level.
Interesting session, well explained the start-up entrepreneur does require eight different traits to be aligned for the success of the business. Thank you Conor sir for sharing this wonderful video
Thank you so much Conor my name is Aliyu am from Nigeria I love you video and learnt allot from them, I somehow feel am gonna be the next richest man in the world (it may sound crazy but to me it so real that I see my self in the position already) ones again Thank you
Good morning, professor! Where are your videos? I miss them so much....philosophical themes....where are you? I learn a lot with your words...I know that you're working hard..but find a time to teach here for me/us! Maria Luiza, Rio de Janeiro ^(Brocoli)
Thank you, it's just what I need to hear right now. Thank you so much. The question is: where do I find people like this ? Should I create them by myself ? Best regards and have a nice weekend
Thanks for the pieces of information. Extremelly profitable ones! Specially the one that mentions the effectiveness(more than efficiency) of cashing capital through time....to build a business that really scales(far from my case now..but who predicts the future??!). Good revenues are the final dream of a visionary like me! God will be my sword and my future words....Thanks, professor I'll try to allocate my human capital for the best future of my small business. Hope I'm not the last dreamer..but GOD's dreamer. Have a nice week! Maria Luiza Rodrigues Acerbi - RJ - BRAZIL
Excellent Conor! I know exactly where I fit in this framework ;-) I would add a 9 role: Delivery, projet implementation. Scaling the organization to deliver on the Networker's promesses
Good thinking - I imagine that the mechanic combined with the manager are the "execution" role... or you hire an EOS implementer or a Gazelles coach ;-)
Excellent - exactly that - anything that helps us understand where others are coming from helps our way of engaging the great talent around us. If someone is different from us, that doesn't make them "useless"... we must stop and look at what their value system is, what their strengths are. If you ask a banker to be a mechanic, you'll just get politics.
Eye opening and very helpful. My question is how to deal if one’s role was put (ex mechanic) at a disadvantage by not having enough support and staff to function properly.
Another question: Where does sales and sales management come into the picture? The networker isn't scalable... :) Is that part of the Manager's responsability?
RAIN sales - the book (I forget the author's name) says that in the current world we need to divide the customer base into 2 groups - premium and price... the price driven customer - build self service sales for price focussed customers... do not over serve... they will not pay or value service; the premium customer should be overstaffed on sales but should be priced accordingly... The networker is great for high value sales... but some form of sales automation will need to come in very soon.
Your videos is very useful keep going but l think more people more problems no matter how many people organize them there will be problems and I think I am banker
It can work... but they are very different profiles... it is very hard for a visionary to stop having ideas and really work on the prototype, it is really hard for the mechanic to stop improving the prototype and say "we are ready"

Knowing your own strengths and areas of weakness is so important in knowing how to build great teams around you 🕵🏻♀️🕵️♂️

I think I'm a visionary and a warren buffet. This is a good definition. I will keep this in mind for my team.
Thank you Mr Conor.
Interesting! Best presentation yet...good content, concise and quick. No waffle or marshmallows.
Thank you, it's just what I need to hear right now. Thank you so much.
The question is: where do I find people like this ? Should I create them by myself ?
Best regards and have a nice weekend

Thanks so much boss for the Idea

Great information that can be scaled or modified. This is helpful in understanding others reasoning

A soccer team with only 10 players is going to lose a lot of games
Great video! I see the difference in the first 6 roles, but I feel the Baron and Warren Buffett have some overlap.

Loved the video but the baron part could have been explained in a more precise way.
put it on fast forward and you get it in half the time...
Brilliant as always,
In my case, my business is in preliminary design phase, I'm playing the role of visionary and mechanical. Can this work Mr Conor?
It can work... but they are very different profiles... it is very hard for a visionary to stop having ideas and really work on the prototype, it is really hard for the mechanic to stop improving the prototype and say "we are ready"
thank you for this great video!
I have a question: could the role of the "baron" be the key account manager in a medium size business?
kind regards
Yes, absolutely
Bueno ;-)
Gracias 😇
