I'd like to see a test on John Deere fuel conditioner. Used to be made by stanadyne but they switched, interested to see the results of new stuff.
Do you think mixing the additives in the recommended concentration to #2 diesel fuel would impact the results at all (Vs. stand alone testing of each substance)?
I would like to see Optilube products tested. It is supposed to be a good diesel fuel lubricant.
Another request for testing Opti-lube XPD against Hot Shot’s Secret EDT, thank you!
Archoil I've not seen any hard testing on it like you do .

I work for Oreilly's Auto Parts, and I get questions of this nature all the time. I like the facts you present in a non-biased manor! Great work! you're helping all us auto guys (and customers) make the wisest decisions on products!! Thanks again for your thoroughness!!
Thank you!
I work there as well, pretty close to DC35 in Boston. Im sending this video to everyone in our work group chat lol.
Oreilly's is my man cave away from home AND they always have my Stanadyne in stock.
I like project farm, I do, the comparisons he does do give a lot of useful insight but we still have to use our critical thinking with this stuff and also realize there are whole physics and chemistry specialties dedicated to understanding how stuff performs in given ways. Like… the diesel 911, it’s not an antigel product it’s designed to be used AFTER youre having problems with water and ice in your fuel… meaning it’s likely isopropyl alcohol based… so it “bonds” with the water and puts in in solution to be gotten rid of. All diesel fuel has water in it… it’s a question of how the water is mixed in…. So you can’t judge all of this solely based on the testing done here. Also… you can get isopropyl alcohol cheaper at Walmart in the pharmacy. And you can have an alcohol solution that in a bottle won’t freeze at very cool temps… but add in some water (aka put the additive in the fuel that has water) and suddenly it’s frozen at a much milder temp. All I’m saying is take this stuff with a grain of salt and do proper research to understand the full extent of the processes involved when asking a liquid mix of chemicals to do big jobs. Follow the directions on the bottles, contact the people that make the stuff… look up the msds to see if it lists the actual ingredients so you can understand what something really does. Bobistheoilguy is a good place to start as far as non peer reviewed stuff… but again you are your own warranty in this world so I always try to actually understand further and check as many sources as i can within the timeframe involved. And there are some circumstances where dumping some random snake oil or even something fine in one motor in your fuel can cost you thousands dependent on the machine.
I work for O’Reillys as well at 1554. I watched this video because I’ve never owned a diesel and want to see what worked best
I keep coming back to this video thinking there needs to be a "diesel fuel additive" series. There are so many new products just in the last 2 years that I feel like we need more data to go along with it! I'd love to see amsoil, and Lucas oil added to the bunch. Also hotshots new products as well. As another comment suggested, doing a lubricity test with the correct dilution of fuel with additive might also change things!
Thanks for the suggestions.
This is a great suggestion but until the video comes out I suggest using hotshot secret diesel fuel additive. It is very recommended and talked about in the diesel community as the best diesel additive for keeping your diesel running smoothly
@@ProjectFarm Please include european diesel additives to next test. Thank you for your great effort and honesty
Please include Wynns diesel fuel treatment and Liqui Moly treatment. Thanks for your time and effort in making these videos!
After getting a duramax I've been seeing almost everyone recommend Hot shots and or power service

😂😂😂Yes!! The asshole prick neighbor not cool enough to come over and drink beers with the guy while he does this. And good choice of names, Jim and Carol. 😂 Typical.
Call it Death Proof.
As a truck driver this got my attention
I hope this video helps you! It's already helped me get ready for winter
Get f-10 it Cleans all water out of diesel
If your diesel looks like any of this at that temperature, your engine won't be running long...
@Earl James I've jelled on howes a couple times... some people run coarse fuel filters and won't have much trouble. I've always run the oem recommend filters that are normally @5 micron or less
@Evermore, I use one entire bottle of Howes per tank, 300 total capacity. It's worked well, now I just run the APU and it powers the fuel heater, so I don't even stress any more while I am home and truck is parked.
Most proud moment of my life is when my son came home excited to have found project farm, I knew he was now a man

Whats better is he responds to you on a text. But hes dang awesome
I was thinking “ the Roach” because it looks so beaten down and reached out, either that or “rot row” because those rev were built with such a large quantity of wood products that they rotted away, and that land barge will never be the same or water tight!
"This beautiful RV"
Somehow managed to find the RV from Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead.
lol
Project Farm maybe you should call it Heisenberg?
In Breaking Bad Jesse calls the RV the "Crystal Ship"
AJ Maybe “the uncertainty principle” would be more apt for Project Farm, or “Heisenberg’s knocker”
Is that the same rv that was on national Lampoon's Christmas vacation?
Great test. I've been using the Stanadyne for over twenty years now. Honestly, no surprise on how well it did in your testing. It's a must use, to keep GM 6.5L diesel injection pumps running a long long life.
Thanks! Thanks for sharing.
I'm at 16 years with my VW 1.9 ALH TDI using Stanadyne. Zero issues thus far - I add it to every tank full regardless of the weather.
I'm retired from GM now as a master diesel tech....stanadyne was always used where I worked...from the 6.5 to the duramax arrival and never had any issues
Now granted I live in Southern California and we don't have that cold a weather here...but overall stanadyne was always used at our dealership
You do such a great job with these videos and seem to truly listen to your viewers. Thank you for what you do

ProjectFarm: tests diesel additives and drag races an old RV over the field 😂👌🏽
Just mix a bit petrol to the diesel in the winter, works also.
"How well does diesel additive do under 12 lbs of boost?"
“For safety reasons, everything has been JB Welded into postion.”
What a glorious quote.
Thanks!
I really appreciate the videos. Always very informative and fun. When it comes to diesel treatment being that our trucks have saddle style tanks we double and even triple dose our fuel. When temps are single digit or lower I’ve even had to add 4x the listed amount. Never had any luck out of howes for anti-gel but power service works pretty good as long as it’s over-dosed. The only time I use the recommended amount is when I’m doing regular injector cleaning by fuel treatment. I had fuel gel on me just last week. I used regular power service anti-gel in the white jug and added a 250 gallon treatment to a 35 gallon tank. Yes it’s overkill by the directions but it did work and got my work truck running great again. It didn’t happen immediately though.
Thanks! Thanks for the feedback.
Just amazing. I even showed my wife the aerial shot of the camper runs and she said "that's amazing."
lmao! the drone footage of the RV was the funniest shit i've seen in a while!
Awesome!! Glad you liked it!
No doubt. Hollywood is gonna swipe that!!
I was ROLLING from that, hands down lmao
No doubt
That overhead camera angle was pretty great. It definitely looked like some Hollywood stuff! Keep up the informative and entertaining work!
The diesel 911 is for when your fuel has already gelled, it de-gells the fuel, where as the other products you tested are for a preventative measure.
Ty. Say it louder for the folks in the back!
Yep. Ran a service truck in the mid west and 911 works great at breaking the gelled fuel back down for a short time in the cold, but adding it before
does absolutely nothing.
Another point to make is the other anti-gels will not reliquify gelled fuel, they will only prevent it.
We had a school district that blended 911 in their diesel tanks as their normal antigel. They had 50+ buses. They did it for years and claimed it worked. I told them they were doing it wrong.
i have been driving the same sterling diesel box truck for 10 years and the only thing i use here in north dakota for anti gelling is 911. my fuel has never gelled up, not once. saying it's not preventative is 100% false. we have -30 or worse every winter. and i use sams club shit diesel on top of that, not that expensive full on winter blend stuff.
As the son and future owner of a farm equipment dealer. Ps 911 is not a preventative it is for once its allready frozen. I constantly deal with customers who dont know the difference. Winterizer is not 911.
911 is mostly alcohol and diesels dont love it but its better than ice.
Great video! Love watching you. Beyond informative.
Thanks! Thanks for the feedback.
I'm so glad I found this video. It's winter time in New England and one of the truck froze last night minus 4. I picked up new fuel filters today and some of the house and some of the power service 911. I'm going to return both of them and go with your recommendation. Thanks for doing the test.
You are welcome! Thanks for the feedback.

Great video.
I have an old RV that was abandoned myself. 1986 allegro. 454 on a GM cassis. 54K confirmed original miles.
I could not believe it but when I started fiddling around with it, if everything still worked. Unbelieveable. Last registration on the tag was 1998. The 454 legit started right up when I ran gasoline to it and purred like a new motor.
I can't bring myself to scrap the old thing. But a roof leak basically ruined the interior of the drivers area and dash. Vandals had broken windows out as well.. I really don't know what to do with it tbh...
Thanks! Thanks for sharing.
Great video and always so interesting! Just like Christina mentioned, a fuel additive comparison for lubricity would be followed like gospel for us diesel truck owners, with all of the CP4 fuel pump failures on the big three diesel pick ups going on.
Thanks! Thanks for the suggestion.

This was a great vid. As a recent owner of a large, diesel truck I've run into a lot of "religion" about diesel additives. It's good to see some science in action.
Thank you!
Yeah I used to make jokes about amazon oil but after watching this mans videos I’d trust amazon basic oil unless you are gonna be building a track/drag car ; it’s almost literally Mobil 1 performance wise
Brady Arnold only problem with amazon oil is since they only use the brand name and don’t make their own oil, they could change the oil supplier in the future and you’d never know
@@Yyote Yep, they've already done that with at least one of the products offered under the Basics label.
3d printing filament changed brands late 2019 - early 2020, and I'm sure that there are others. Only those paying attention will notice the changes, as they don't advertise it.
I’d like to see the PS DieselKleen tested at full dose, rather than half-dose. Or if it was, I’d like it to be specified what the dosing is - the Hotshots has 1 dosing option - 1 ounce per 8 gallons.
The PS has 2 dosing options, and 3 formulations - the 1:400, 1:1000, and 1:1500 options.
So, if we were using, for example, the 80 oz packaging, at 250 gallons, versus the below 0 option of 125 gallons, it’s literally 2x the dosing. So I expect the results to be significantly different depending on the dosing! And we are never told which dosing he uses. We aren’t told if the packaging was a 1:400 or 1:1000 mix option. I’m not as familiar with the others, but at least tell us what version, what dosing! That’s what Science is about!
Thanks again for doing all this testing I have an 85 diesel wagon with 300,000 miles and it definitely needs all the help it can get in the winter.
You are welcome!
Love the RV. You need to incorporate it into more vids. Thanks for all of the hard work that goes into every video.
Love your channel, how about a test of anti-seize compounds?
Great suggestion! I'll do it.
Also should compare between anti-seize in a bottle with a brush, in a stick, and spray
Blue goop antiseize
**Update**
My vehicle is a 08 Cummins, full delete, EFI live tunes on tow tune with TCM programed. Live in upstate NY.
Prior, when using Howes and I used the remote start in cold temps (below 30) the truck would fire, stall recycle ignition and try again. Sometimes taking three attempts. Since using Hot Shot the truck has fired every time on first try. Very pleased with that alone. No mileage data as I have been plowing some.
Thank you again for the information.
Thank you again. I was a Howes user, just ordered some Hot Shot.
Keep us all posted how you like it!
I used to think 911 was good for anti gel but hot shot for me from now on
Happy Hobo to be fair, the 911 is for emergencies, the regular white bottle is for everyday cold weather use

Man, im getting my first diesel this weekend, and i live in iowa, right now its -6 and im definitely worried about gelling and stuff. So this video was absolutely helpful and i now have hot shots additive in my amazon cart! Thank you so much!
Buy winterized diesel fuel from your fuel station, and you shouldn't have any problems.
I use Hotshot Secrets twice a year in my Jeep Eco-diesel. Wonderful product, the engine runs amazingly smooth for months after the treatment.

Amsoil does have a diesel anti-gel it's called cold flow, or diesel all in one, I wish that would got tested, I am a big Amsoil user.
My box of All in One arrived last week. I typically use Stanadyne, but thought I'd give the Amsoil additive a try since I begin using their diesel oil.
I use the cetane boost and fuel system cleaner from Amsoil on my 1981 Mercedes 240d diesel along with the Amsoil European 5w-40 Classic in my car and it runs like a charm.

Hi. I found your channel few days ago and I've already watched most of your videos. I'd like to thank you for your work. I find your videos very entertaining and I always watch them with curiosity.
Thank you very much for the positive comments! It keeps me motivated to keep making videos
I would give your rv the name SLAM, the short form of: sounds like a mower
Thank you
You are very thorough on your testing and you have become the UA-cam authority on testing.
Thanks!
Great comparison, I've used PS for many years on the farm, will have to give Hot Shot a try! (Like the idea of better lubricity). I will have to say that I've never had a gelling problem with power service, but I've always treated fuel with a slightly higher concentration than called for. (Best to err on the safe side). Farm is located in north central Montana.
Thanks! Thanks for the feedback.
Always fun watching your channel. Always learn something. Plus I really liked the beautiful RV. Kinda reminds me of Cousin Eddy’s on Christmas Vacation! Ha!!
lol. Thank you!!
Cleaning out the shitter!
Would also like to have seen Amsoil Diesel All In One in this test as it is an anti-gel, lubricator, and cetane boost in one product, as well as Optilube XPD
Not just Optilube XPD, that's the popular all around formula. They have other ones, I'm most interested in Boost! and XL, particularly when they're mixed together at their maximum treat rates. Boost is supposed to raise the Cetane Rating by up to 9 points and XL is supposed to increase fuel lubricity a great amount. I've used both together, Boost at the max treat rate and XL at 2 oz / 10 gallons instead of 2.5 oz / 10 gallons. They seemed to pep up my old 6.5 enough so it wouldn't downshift up the same hill at 50 MPH as much so i think they work. (I was using my ScanGauge II to test it, with these additives the MPG numbers were higher up the same hill with the same weather conditions and tire pressures than they were previously.)
If it's anything like regular Amsoil I'm sure it's aces.
Thanks man. I’ve been using power in the white bottle for years in my Freightliner semis but I may try your top two finishers now.
Many times we buy bc of brand and history but proof is in testing like this.

Hi Jeff!
sure does sound like it
Your videos move along and are well edited and you make it look easy but I want to compliment how much time you actually must devote to run these tests. Excellent work
Thanks so much!
Kinda' late to this one, sorry. In another event that you had done I responded with my use of MMO. I use it in my cranes as well to assist with boom lift, boom rotation and quicker boom reaction. I found that it resists the freezing points n winter work (very little thank God) and does not "thin out" or lose pressure in summer. I am using MMO in my diesel fuel as well. Maybe Im wrong but after hundreds of thousands of miles I have no engine failures or excessive repairs.
I have an eCAT engine at over 650 horses that cranks and runs perfectly with MMO mixing all 12 months.
There is no change in the servicing and no strange residual effects on service intervals. Just me.
Thanks for the healthy look at what we "daily runners" run with. Good Job!!!
With all the bosch cp4's out there a straight lubricity test against all the tops, lx4 etc.. would be really helpfull.
Always love the videos. Thank you for taking the time to do it right A+

I use the ps in the silver bottle on my titan xd cummins. Curious how ot would compare to the regular hot shots secret for everyday use, specifically lubricity, since it doesn't get that cold here in West Tx.

RV name: Snapper because it sounds like a lawn mower.
Came to suggest the same name! It has a big bulky shell, moves slowly, pointy snout, and sounds like a lawn mower. It even sends blades of grass flying. "Snapper" sounds like the perfect name with a double meaning to me. (-:
Recommendations for the next round: OptiLube XPD, Amsoil All-In-One, John Deere Fuel Protect Winter Formula, Summer Formula too just for fun. According to big study OptiLubeXPD was the best of the best. John Deere products weren't in that test but I've heard really good things about them.
Definitely recommended this
Project Farm, if you would happen to do another test video using these products, I would love to also see you test Conklin’s two diesel products, Diesel-Plus and 4-Power D and I would be happy to send you a quart of each!
I came here to recommend Opti-Lube as well. Thank you.
But I would also recommend Opti-Lube Winter for its anti-gel properties.
I was hoping for Optilube as well. I've been running it for several years without issue in my Kubota.
I still appreciate the testing.

Thanks for the feedback.
@@ProjectFarm definitely going to look into hot shots secret through. Thanks for doing this testing for us
Nice vid :-)
I'm using 2 stroke oil in all my diesels (LIQUI MOLY 2 TAKT MOTOROIL TSC3, 100ml on 50L tank), it helps a lot to save hi pressure diesel pump (no sulfur diesel fuel is the reason of failiure in 90% cases...).
And I'm not worried about gel/wax in fuel, in EU we have other-witer norm for diesel fuel (with much lower freezing point). Also always change fuel filter BEFORE winter, if its dirty then it will clog up waaay quicker.
Great strategy!
Same here, saves quite a bit of fuel as well.
Transmission fluid has long been a known lubricant for diesel engines. Transmission fluid could also be mixed with kerosene fuel for anti-gel and a lubricant. Except if temps are sub-zero you don't want any Transmission fluid to slow your fuel flow down, I stop putting transmission fluid in mine when the temps dip to 40's and 30's Fahrenheit
Add 2-EHN to raise cetane, easy cold start, less clatter, add with 2 stroke to lube.
The RV sure is a beaut’ needs to be called the Cousin Eddie
Thank you!
Would love to see an updated showdown of diesel additive. There are numerous ones that claim they increase lubricity of diesel as well as add anti gel properties. Would love to see some of these other higher end additive brands tested.
Thanks for the video idea.
Opti-lube is hands down the best. Would be a good test subject.
Another incredibly well done test. Many thanks.
I live in South Wisconsin.
I have used the Howes since it is readily available at a local farm implements store since I bought my Jeep in 2005. Never had a problem with fuel gelling even when I buy the biodiesel in Monroe, WI. If you are going to have gelling it is far more likely to happen with biodiesel.
I was disappointed the Howes did not lubricate as well as it should have. But then it occurred to me, that is what the biodiesel is for.
Lubrication is very important now. I don't fully understand how sulfur lubricated the injectors, but now that it has been refined down to a record low level there should be something to replace it. Sounds like the Stanadyne would be the best one to use if you can't get biodiesel or if you are reluctant to trust it in winter.
My Jeep Liberty now has 260,000 miles on the original pump and injectors. I'm reasonably certain the biodiesel has helped lubricate and protect the engine parts.
If I should go on a long trip where biodiesel may not be available, I will look for the Stanadyne.
Thanks and you are welcome! Thanks for sharing.
These are some of my favorite videos, I'm severely interested in the outcome of every video of yours. Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much, will do!
Lucus has an anti gel for Diesel as well which I often use. I would love to see it tested as well sometime . I so enjoy your videos.
Thank you! Thanks for the video idea.
Thank you @Project Farm. I subscribe but don’t always view your newest stuff as it comes out. But I always tend to end up back to you when I’m trying to figure out which products to use for a particular task. Always Solid info! That RV has to be named Cousin Eddie by now…lol.
You are welcome! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
I use Howell because it’s typically what truck stops carry besides the PS brand. I’ve never had any issues but when you’re in a climate that gelling up is possible the diesel is already treated when you purchase it so most additives work.
Really enjoyed this especially the lubricity test. Every one of them claim to increase lubricity and nearly none of it is true

I don't know why, but this shot made me laugh. :-)
lol. Funny!!
Ernest goes to the Project Farm? (RIP Mr. Varney)
I used 100% biodiesel for a time in my PowerStroke 7.3 and it lubed the snot out of the injection system. I did have to mix with #2 diesel during colder weather. The EOA always came back with very very low wear metals. A NRL report stated that a 1% addition of biodiesel to ULSD improves fuel lubricity by 65%. I have been using Howes' but won't any more thanks to your well thought out comparison test.
Have been using Howes for a long time as well but I have to switch to hotshot secret. It was -6 this morning and my 99' 7.3 E450 did not like it.
Thanks for sharing.
Wow! Confirms the holy trinity of howes, amsoil, and hotshot treatments I use for my engines I work with.
The accidental discovery kept my engines happy since.
Thanks for the feedback.
The lubricant test is near idyllic test case for for the Bosch CP4 failure which seems to cause anxiety in the late model Diesl community. Wondering if you wouldn’t mind doing another additive test, but this time focusing on different lubricity variants as opposed to Gel-ing. Hot shot lx4 vs ... for example. Thank you!! Objectivity saves THOUSANDS!!
Correct Christina, we are all freaking out on our CP4 pumps!
The CP4 has cost Fiat/RAM a ton of trucks I know and Ford and GM are running these same pumps but I believe have stronger lift pumps , Just a guess. Your right they need to find the best additive for lubricity. Its imperative to keeping these fuel pumps alive. I have always used Schaeffers Winter fuel additive for diesel. They make very high quality Synthetic Motor oils and greases and are a local company so I have supported their products for decades. I hope PF tests this.
Thanks for testing this. With so many options at the store and the cost of repair (especially new diesels), this is super helpful.
Glad to hear!
All things considered, I’ll stick with Stanadyne. Thank you so much for testing all these additives. It was very informative.
You are welcome!
I just bought my first diesel in October and have been asking farmers what they do for their work trucks thinking they are careful to make sure their investments are cared for. I was told to put the howes in my truck as we will get a few weeks of -20f° a year. Im disappointed it did so poorly. I will definitely be looking for some hot shots. Thank you so much for this unbiased review. Ill he telling all my farmers buddies about this for sure and good on Hot shots for making a good looking product.
Thanks!
Second round should include:
Penray
Seafoam
BG
Motorcraft
Motor Medic
Lucas
Mac's
CRC
FPPF
These are the one's I've sold both in my time at a national auto parts store and 2 national class 8 tractor dealerships.
I was kinda surprised that Lucas wasn't in there the most. Seafoam is what I use most of but I'm not to concerned about South Florida freezing
I'd like to see the Peak line of products tested as well.
What about optilube xdp and amsoil additive
Don forget Amsoil Diesel injector clean and diesel all in one.
How about naming the RV the “Poor Fifty Four” since it has a 454 Engine.
this is the best name!
I second this!
454 is a dam good and realiable engine
Love that name!
@@velezdragon3574 as long as it is in something light.
I would love to see Archoil added to the testing with Stanadyne and Hot Shots...I use Archoil to help lubricate the cp4 pump in my Superduty.
Thanks for the suggestion.
I would also like to so archoil, i use it religiously
